I feel we'd say something like "you look great body positivity is awesome but hear me out, let's body positivity ourselves away from diabetes if we can."
I always say you're beautiful because my Mom, a boomer/genx cusper, would shoot me down any chance she got and when I look back at my pictures I wasn't huge! Now I don't put people down because living life is extra rough as it is, they don't need my two cents.
"I didn't ask if I was beautiful, I asked if I was fat."
I hate the implication that being overweight makes the one unattractive. As for what I'd say? I'd slap my stomach and say, "I'm not one to talk."
I would think the Gen X response, but internally roll my eyes and say the millennial response. I think that's appropriate for a generation that's blended/on the cusp like ours.
My response is usually " can you just tell me if you want me to agree with you or not because no matter what I say it's going to be wrong unless you tell me exactly what I'm supposed to say" - is that xennial or just me?
I always felt that way, so as my kid was getting diagnosed with ADHD as a teen, it clicked that I had it. Eventually got diagnosed in my 30s.
Then just talking with them and realizing ADHD represents differently in women, so they aren't diagnosed as much or much later in life... then led me to alot of traits I have that made me "different" that lined up with autism.
That combined with my neglectful childhood kind of added up for me. But just *learning* I needed to "act/behavior" a certain situation or people, I always felt like I was different somehow. How did I not just *know* to do such things or it took awhile to learn the rules of engagement?
It's been one hell of a trip trying to figure myself out and be the best person I can be
Ok but I'm autistic and I'd want your honest opinion about the state of my body size. Sometimes it's hard to tell and you need an outside view to fully understand what's going on
But, *you* would know you've gained weight right? Like I keep various sizes of pants and tops because im realistic, so when I'm on the higher end of those... I notice
I also notice when clothes get tighter, because I hate it. Maybe that's just me though
I told her that me saying that would depress her and make it worst, hearing it from a doctor is more clinically cut and dry. Now she has a will to do something about it without me shaming her into it, that shit needs to be self motivated.
We both need to lose some pounds
I'm a few years younger than most on this sub (86 baby) and I swear the main reasons I identify more strongly with Xennials/gen X are my early memories (good amount of memories from as young as 18 mo) and the fact that my love language is roasting you within an inch of your life. 😅
Depends if I like them or not. There's sort of a band of politeness:
- If I hate them: they get the Gen X response.
- If I'm indifferent: they get the Millennial response.
- If I like them: they get the Gen X response, but I offer them a beer. Or a twinkie.
Nobody has ever asked me if they're fat because everyone I know is perfectly aware of their own body. And I don't give a shit what anyone does with their own body unless they're using it to hurt someone else.
Oh, sorry, guess that makes me a genZ or something.
Gen X’s response would be something along the lines of “We were the last generation to play outside and we drank from the hose. Also, we had the best music.”
In my experience we vacillate between the Gen x and the millennial responses depending on who we're talking too.
Actually I think I've always modulated my response to the audience so I've used all of these.
Gen Z would tell you no, but that they're concerned by how much skin you're showing and by how much you talk about your sex life, because they're all turning into a bunch of puritanical little conservative weirdos.
Naw.. just depends on if I know the person on a real personal level or not.
But also.. the millennial and gen Z are infuriating. Fat is not bad, it's just a necessary brain nutrition. Aleo someone can be fat AND beautiful. Lying isn't good.
I have the millennial response, except I know I've been called out that "beautiful" isn't the opposite of "fat," because (a) being overweight doesn't exclude someone for being beautiful and (b) saying you're beautiful doesn't actually contradict the claim of being overweight.
The only time I was ever asked that question directly (and with subsequently called out) was when I was 21 and dating an overweight 19-year-old. Her thing was all about finding ways of starting fights with me. Anyone else I've been with, or been friends with, they know on their own whether or not they are their ideal weight, and they're not going to ask someone else to confirm or disconfirm whether they are overweight. Instead, they'll talk about goals like, "when I get to my ideal weight I'm going to wear this jacket I got."
True. Although I'm old enough and my friends are grounded enough that no one is asking this. The ones who are, know, and they don't need to fish for compliments.
The last time I saw my dad, I was 37 and hadn’t seen him in about 5 years. The first words out of his mouth were “you’re not even *that fat.*”
I was, and am, a US size 8 (medium).
I told him that annoyed, and quite honestly, offended me — and he was baffled. “But I said you’re NOT even that fat!” 🙄
This still pisses me off. Backhanded fucking compliment. Just one of the reasons I haven’t seen him since lol. How about say nothing! Or just “you look good, it’s good to see you.”
