First flight in January 1982. Designed by Burt Rutan to research STOL capabilities. After completion of tests it was donated to EAA Museum in Oshkosh WI.

Thank you! OP’s photos were from terrible angles

what's the benefit of using 2 wheel assemblies over single larger wheels like tundra tires?

The wider aspect ratio may have packaged better in the fuselage.

Not retractable gear.

Also, look at how the axle is attached to the composite gear legs on the Grizzly. With 2 wheels they didn't have to bolt the axle to the gear. It's attached with tow wrapping to lash the axle to the strut.

My thoughts: I suspect they just used what they could work with, it didn't need to have bush wheels which generally are used to operate from very rough surfaces. It was for STOL research only. These wheels and brakes are ubiquitous, so easy to find and replace. I guess the forces on the struts are more balanced using this design as well.
And these days, bush wheels are expensive! Not really something you want unless you have plenty of money and thinks it looks cool, or really need them for rough terrain ops.

It doesn’t win the award for pilot visibility down! Not that I am comparing myself to the legend…
