Is anyone open to just chatting about the UK?

I recently turned 18, so I decided to create a reddit account and find people to talk to. A little back story about me, I grew up in rural Missouri in America, homeschooled, and up to this point I’ve never really had any friends. But, since I was about 5 years old, I’ve had a fascination with the UK. Because I was homeschooled and really left to my own, my culture was really what I made it to be. It started out as a fascination with the late Queen and the royal family, but now it’s spread to literally every else that I can learn about the UK. I’ve consumed really nothing but UK television, social media, culture, really anything i could find relevant to the UK. In doing so I’ve acquired something of an encyclopaedic knowledge of British culture and traditions, to the point where I was asked by a global politics professor about British politics and how Brits broadly feel about American culture . I gave him the broad consensus. I often find that most people, including myself, think of me more as British than American. I’ve even noticed that when I speak some of my vowels have shifted to more of an RP/ south eastern accent. All of this backstory is just to ask, are there any people who are willing to just have friendly conversations with me. Not about anything in particular, I am just trying to find people who will understand my pop culture references or generally people who understand British culture and appreciate an outsider who is trying to make his way inside.
Particular-Strike220@reddit
You probably won't see this but if you haven't yet, watch Detectorists, probably one of the greatest British TV shows imo - also the only one which isn't essentially a show about hating your life imo aha
Careless_Battle32@reddit
What do you answer in these circumstances:
I say to you:
Autoglass repair, you say [?]
(We’re carrying a large object eg a ladder). To me, you say [?]
(We are strangers out and about eg walking our respective dogs. We cross paths). I say alright mate, you say [?]
Also what is the plural of £1 (one quid)?

No google: 1. Autoglass replace 2. No idea 3. Alright 4. Depending on who you ask, pound is a plural. Eg. Its three pound, but a fiver, a tenner, a twenty pound note, and a fifty is known simply as: “ excuse me while I get my manager” 5. I’m guessing fosters because the Australians are violent? 6 a boris bike is a london public bike.

with this "Also what is the plural of £1 (one quid)?"

Dry_rye_@reddit
OurSeepyD@reddit
The manager will often come out to check the fifty
GoonishPython@reddit
Yeah when I worked in retail the manager was always called over as most of us had never seen a real fifty
smokingpancakes1@reddit
£100 notes aren't really a thing though (and before you say yes bank of Scotland do issue them but they are very rare)
TheRealJetlag@reddit
If it’s three pound, then it’s pronounced “free pand”
Dense_Imagination984@reddit
Fair play for knowing most of these quite Obscure outside of UK refs. I'm pretty sure Stella is the wife beater though. Personally I never thought of Aussies as violent. Not sure about the rest of the country.

Express-Motor8292@reddit
Australians are violent? I don’t think they have ever had that reputation in the UK. It would be kind of hypocritical of us anyway! Ha
imanutshell@reddit
Not much of a violent rep with us a for sure, because we mostly get the pretty chill travelling bartender Aussies.
But at least some of them were violent enough that their government had to launch a campaign to rename punching people in the back of the head when they’re walking away from a “King Punch” to a “Coward Punch” because that was enough of an ongoing problem that it needed their intervention so… I guess there’s that? 🤷♂️
Express-Motor8292@reddit
I mean, that’s quite a common way that people are killed, at least from falling over and banging their head. Someone was killed on our doorstep a couple of years ago because of that, as was a friend of a friend.
newbris@reddit
Not to mention they don’t drink fosters.
Express-Motor8292@reddit
Xxxx?
newbris@reddit
Fourex is a traditional local state beer (Queensland). It's on the list but not the most popular.
No_Tie3049@reddit
I absolutely love the logic behind no.5 'because the Australians are violent?'
Familiar_Radish_6273@reddit
If you have a middle class accent, more than one pound will be plural. So if, as you say, you're developing a South Eastern/RP accent you might need to pluralise at the risk of sounding like youre trying too hard. Sorry! It's a minefield.
Villianofthepeace@reddit
Number 5 is also called a pint of do as you’re told
Careless_Battle32@reddit
Fair play with these answers mate, not bad for a non-native. Point I was trying to make re. One quid was that yanks tend to pluralise two quids, three quids etc. It’s like the word sheep, it stays as “quid” when there’s more than one. Others have given you the correct responses to other q’s but you did v well.
newbris@reddit
A Brit would have far better knowledge of Australians ;)
Tanglefoot11@reddit
Three PoundzzzZZZ!
Pounds with an "s" for plural.
If you're a bit of a thick cunt you'd say "free pound innit".
You are correct with it being a twenty pound note - there is only one note so that counts as singular I guess....?
Kinda bizarre how a 50 still gets that kind of attention. I remember it being a big and rare note back in the mid 90s, but it was worth double then compared to now - it's the equivalent of £25 & nobody batted an eye at a 20 back then.... We should be having £100 notes with 50s being in regular use by now at least. Heck, when it was introduced in 1981 it was the equivalent of nearly £200 today....
Acrobatic-Ad584@reddit
Those in regular use ie 50s were mostly forgeries?
Tanglefoot11@reddit
Never come across a single forged 50.
LOTS of forged 20s and probably about half that number of forged tenners, but zero 50s.
20s were the most forged probably because forgers knew that 50s get a lot more attention and care. If 50s were common then they would be the most forged for sure.
Acrobatic-Ad584@reddit
I was given a forged 20 in Lloyds years ago, the shop I was trying to use it in sent for the Police who frog marched me back to the bank! Bank handed over a real one and I went back and got my cigarettes. What a fun lunch hour! Still giggle about it now. It seems the shop had been handed so many I was the straw that broke the camels back. I have big shoulders!
Desperate-Cookie3373@reddit
I was a FEx cashier at Heathrow back in the mid 90s and you couldn’t move for fake 50s back then….
Acrobatic-Ad584@reddit
They felt strangely thicker, at least those I came across. Shops stopped accepting them for a while because there were so many.
Dry_rye_@reddit
Honestly not sure 50s do get that kind of attention most of the time.
If you get out large enough amounts in cash many banks will give you 50s. If you are a tourist many foreign exchanges will give you 50s.
They aren't that common sure but the worst case scenario is probably someone jokingly asking you if you are a drug dealer, especially with the new plastic notes, and the fact you can check them under UV light, which a lot of bars etc already had the machine for cause the old ones used a uv light too.
didumakethetea@reddit
5 is Stella, 2 is 'to you' because of an old TV show the Chuckle Brothers, they were tradesmen who were hilariously awful at their jobs. Nationally beloved. 'To me' 'to you'
wtf_amirite@reddit
not too shabby.
btw the "wifebeater" is stella artois lager - i think nicknamed as such due to its strength and tendency to get drinkers rapidly drunk and also potentially violent.
KaleidoscopeEven7463@reddit
Check out the chuckle brothers for number 2
shichijunin@reddit
Sorry. I don't believe you. You definitely DID Google the majority of those.
No need to lie about it.
Greatgrowler@reddit
5 is Stella
Cool_Finding_6066@reddit
The plural of £1 if expressed in quid is 'two quid'. Or one million --dollars-- quid Like sheep.
jl2352@reddit
For 3 you would ask if they are out dogging (referencing the dog).
’Dogging’ is a traditional British word, and so it’s a pun on the dog walking. ’Dogging’ has a lot of complexity I won’t go into so you may wanna just Google it to get the full understanding.
Electrical-Leave4787@reddit
These are solid examples you listedFakery_test . Others are: “Salt n vinegar? Wrapped…?” “Nice to see you! To[….]”? “British [what] one, two, three”? Breakfast; lunch;[what]; supper? Yeah. There is an American version as well, although the company is not called Autoglass (at least it wasn’t where I saw the ad). I assume it’s a company in the same group.
Peppl@reddit
I saw a youtube video, they use the same jingle in every country and just change the words, same with just eat, which is why snoop dogs bit in the advert didn't mention the brand name, so it could be chopped and changed

Happy to have a back and forth. We wanna know what life in Missouri’s like as much as you want to know about the uk.
We can start with how polarising the monarchy is… 😎🤘
hime-633@reddit
It is lovely and wonderful that you are so interested in the UK! We're a bit of a shithole with a deeply problematic history but hey if you're into us, we welcome you.
Just one thing. And I say this as a jaded OLD PERSON:
" In doing so I’ve acquired something of an encyclopaedic knowledge of British culture and traditions, to the point where I was asked by a global politics professor about British politics and how Brits broadly feel about American culture . I gave him the broad consensus".
This sort of hubris doesn't go down so well. You're 18 and enthusiastic and that is brilliant but maybe come live here for a bit first before giving a broad consensus to a global politics professor about how Brits feel about US culture ;)
GodSaveTheKing07@reddit (OP)
When I say “culture” I was talking about the watsit in the white house. I tried posting this in another subreddit and it told me to stay away from politics, so i changed it. I totally understand what you’re saying though. He asked me about what the average Brit is thinking so I gave him everything that I’ve heard.
Agnesperdita@reddit
As others have been saying, define the “average Brit”. I am in my sixties and, pardon my language, I regard your current president as a narcissistic fuckwit fascist whose brainwashed cult may potentially destroy the world as we know it if he doesn’t providentially choke on a Bic Mac soon, and even then it’s hanging in the balance if the couch-fucker VPtakes over in his place. Meanwhile some of my compatriots worship a pound-shop Mosley who wants to sell our healthcare system to US insurance predators and take us down exactly the same road, pausing only to burn Travelodges full of brown people and release convicted criminals who have previously incited riots to try to do the same. We’re a very diverse nation. I’m not sure the “average Brit” exists any more than the “average American” these days.
Dry_rye_@reddit
Omg pound-shop Mosley 🤣🤣🤣
SpaceWomble64@reddit
Respect for that
Wild-Routine879@reddit
palantir, the ai starmer pants for, is headed in the uk by the grandson of oswald mosley. the plot twists in this series of The UK are just silly by this point.
TheRemanence@reddit
How is starmer linked to palantir?
Desperate-Cookie3373@reddit
Loads of the old school establishment are connected to Moseley in some way though- he was an aristo.
Dry_rye_@reddit
Even using the term "average Brit" is often indicative you arent wildly familiar with the UK
ProfessionalSport565@reddit
Oh give over we all love a crisp sandwich.

Mermaidsarehellacool@reddit
No, I want to savour each salt and vinegar crisp separately tbh.
Civil war?
jl2352@reddit
The bit to get across, and I mean this politely. There is a huge gulf between seeing a country from abroad, and living in that country.
When you eventually visit the UK (as I expect it will happen), I guarantee you will discover things you didn’t know that surprise you. If you then ever lived in the UK, I guarantee you will discover more things.
nonsequitur__@reddit
Tbh with you I’ve noticed Reddit isn’t a realistic representation of the reality of our culture or our thoughts on American culture (as a generalisation - obviously there are many competing opinions), so if you’re basing it on social media posts I would take those voices and opinions with a pinch of salt.
Wild-Routine879@reddit
tbh i live here and idk what the average brit is thinking. we contain (self-effacing) multitudes.
hime-633@reddit
The wotsit?
It is incredibly difficult to define an "average Brit". I wouldn't even try and I've heard a lot of shit over 40 years.
Come join us but don't try and define us :)
total-blasphemy@reddit
You don't know what the average Brit is thinking though, that's the point I think.
Careless_Battle32@reddit
Agree entirely, you sound like a twat saying that in the UK. You’re American so it makes sense. If someone said that bit about encyclopaedic knowledge I’d assume they were joking or full of themselves (ie a twat)
CalmRip@reddit
OP is quite young and, by his or her own admission, not very experienced with social interactions. S/he is looking for a chance to validate, or perhaps correct, his or her store of knowledge. S/he has perhaps gone about it in a somewhat socially inept manner, but without malice and some genuine interest. Is that something that merits your rather biting and dismissive response? Or is this indeed what passes for a civil and thoughtful response in British discourse?
nonsequitur__@reddit
As you can’t read their tone I presume you’re American?
CalmRip@reddit
I am indeed!
adorabelledeerheart@reddit
Yup, they are.
hime-633@reddit
I edited it within ten minutes of writing the original version to acknowledhege that it sounded a bit harsh. I also noted that OP is young.
Having said that....
"Lovely wonderful brilliant, come and live here though". If that counts for biting and dismissive then yeah I'm an absolute fucking bitch.

Yes absolutely watch this. And if you haven’t already seen them, some other comedies I recommend are Green Wing, Peep Show, Detectorists, Mighty Boosh, Mum, Fleabag. You’ve already named some classics so these are some others you might enjoy.

GodSaveTheKing07@reddit (OP)
My favourite older programme is Keeping Up Appearances, newer is Outnumbered. I really enjoy Reading biographies and memoirs. I love musicals! Especially the older ones, like sound of music and fiddler on the roof.
mozzarella_destroyer@reddit
As someone who works in the UK TV industry, I am so happy to hear of a young person loving Keeping Up Appearances! Hyacinth is an icon. There’s also a great podcast about it with our resident posh expert, William Hanson.
Would recommend watching Flowers, Blackadder, The Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place too!

the good life is on my save list on BBC Iplayer, and Allo Allo is one of the first BBC programmes that i watched. I absolutely loved it.
marmiteyogurt@reddit
It’s a really fun one, it’s about a couple (the goods) and their neighbours, tom good ends up wanting out of the rat race and basically becomes a farmer but without leaving his suburban semi detached house, sounds a weird storyline but it’s one of my favourite of the older British comedy shows.
Wiedegeburt@reddit
Try Red Dwarf , it is one of our treasures and kind of locked into our culture and would seem weird to americans xD

Firstly, thank you for your interest. Fancy a cuppa? I'll get out the good biscuits.
Have you seen Only Fools and Horses? Aside from Red Dwarf and Black Adder, it's the third pillar of British comedy.
Any_Listen_7306@reddit
Nah mate you should be sending them in the direction of Peep Show!
What biscuits constitute good in your house? Just being nosy here...
EldritchKinkster@reddit
Peep Show is a fine show, indeed.
Jammie Dodgers, gingernuts, maybe custard creams? I'm really a plain digestive man at heart, but those are really the default biscuit, so I don't think I can get away with putting them in the "good biscuit" tin.
And PG Tips for the tea. Or, Yorkshire.
What about you, what biscuit do you favour?
Any_Listen_7306@reddit
If I'm being cheap, I have a penchant for pink wafers (dipped in tea!) Otherwise these nice foreign - I think - buttery rectangular biscuits with dark chocolate (we bought the Lidl version and they're just as good!) Sounds like you have an excellent biscuit tin! Although my OH says Yorkshire Tea is "extortionate" so I end up leaving my teabag of whatever brand we get in the cup so it's suitably strong! (Would not do this except at home, however!)
EldritchKinkster@reddit
Oooo, I forgot the pink wafers! They are also very good.
Yeah, I usually get PG Tips. Yorkshire is more of an "if I can get it" thing.

To add to the list of comedy recommendations you’re gonna get, I’m going to add rather an odd one - Norsemen. It’s Norwegian, not British, but it’s acted in English. But I strongly suspect because the majority of us are descended from Scandinavians, Norwegian humour seems really similar to ours. The dry, deadpan, straight-faced quality of it has something really British about it.

The epitome of British culture
DifficultyHelpful220@reddit
I'd say, Britain is multiple countries. England, even, is multiple countries. It's hard to convey the truth of that till you live here.
Yorkshire is its own country. So is Wales, Scotland, the west country, Northern Ireland, Northumberland, etc. etc. there's a lot of culture to be had here.
Most notably, London is its own country and, for a lot of its residents, it assumes it is Britain (particularly England). I say all this as someone from London who has now lived in the North for more than half my life. London is something of a burden the rest of the nation has to carry quite honestly.

That’s absolutely bloody nasty. I boil the water in my ELECTRIC kettle, put in the sugar and my PG Tips bag (no lipton, I don’t drink that filth) and pour over boiling water. Let sit for 3 minutes and stir. I drink my tea with whole milk, B3 colour.
SarahHamstera@reddit
Lipton is a hate crime. I bring my own tea on holidays now. Even European countries serve Lipton sometimes (I'm looking at you Spain) and I think I now understand the reasons for Brexit.

Try some Twinings English Breakfast if you get chance. I used to drink very strong tea and switched to Yorkshire Gold, but my tastebuds flipped and it started tasting very bitter. Twinings is just flavourful enough. Oh and don’t squeeze the teabag as you take it out. It can contribute to bitterness

The lower classes could only afford the clay mugs which weren’t as heat resistant as the bone china that the upper classes had, so they used the milk as both a coolant and a protective layer to keep the mug from breaking under the heat.

Hi, as a young gay man, I can fully attest to rural Missouri being a scary place to be anything but a straight white conservative man. I absolutely love yes minster, it was one pf the reasons i went into studying politics and government. Sir humphry is the best.
ed_cnc@reddit
Also, dont forget to watch My Beautiful Thing - a great film and close to reality at the time
RustyBucket4745@reddit
If you're a gay man, can I recommend the film 'Pride'? It's amazing. It makes me cry every time. It's about the true story of a group of lesbians & gay activists in the 1980s supporting the striking welsh miners. So good, so British/Welsh.
PeterManc1@reddit
Don't miss "My Beautiful Launderette" too if you have never seen it. A simply incredible gay film from the 1980s.
For some reason, I am now thinking of the semi-obscure English TV film (not gay): "P'tang Yang Kipperbang" - which seems to be on YouTube. I remember watching it as a boy feeling that my life was suddenly expanding. Totally English (cricket allusions that you may not understand).
If you like classical music, check out the operas by gay composer Benjamin Britten (Peter Grimes, Billy Budd, and many others). They are simply wonderful and as English as can be.
Gilbert and Sullivan's 19th century operettas (Mikado, Captain Pinafore, etc.), of course, are huge fun - and if you like Sir Humphrey, you will probably love them. As quirky and as funny as can be.

Hey Missourian. I’m a Brit who has been in Missouri since 2016. St. Louis though, so maybe a liberal bubble lol. Rural Missouri is shit scary for a gay immigrant like me.
Have you watched Yes Minister, Peep Show or Green Wing?? They are great TV shows in the UK.
I have a question for you though. How do you feel about the second amendment and guns?? In the UK we find the US attitude to guns utterly insane. But I’m interested in your thoughts. Same with abortion but also cannabis!?! How did Jeff C allow that to become legal?? :)
GodSaveTheKing07@reddit (OP)
I’m sorry for not finishing answering your question, I am absolutely horrified by the US’s obsession with the second amendment and guns in general. Abortion is also a topic i feel very strongly about, I am staunchly pro choice. And as of the referendum on the ballot last November, the majority of Missouri is too. I’m not a huge fan of cannabis. I do think that it should be harder to get, but not an absolute ban on it. My mother’s high school best friend was killed in a car crash because the driver of the other vehicle was high.
MomentoVivere88@reddit
Green Wing is such a hidden gem of a comedy!
CapnSeabass@reddit
The references you’ve made are all very Anglo-centric. When you talk about Brits and the UK, are you specifically referring to England?
Because there are four countries within the UK, all with very distinct cultures and feelings and vibes, and political sentiment varies wildly.
For example, I’m Scottish and don’t feel particularly British. We have things in common, sure (oh eight hundred double oh), but we have our own cultural identity and heritage.
We have Limmy’s Show, Chewin’ The Fat, Still Game, Billy Connolly, the bells at Hogmanay, and an extra bank holiday on 2nd Jan to recover. We have our own history of kings and queens, our own languages, and our own court system. Different landscapes, geographical and political.
GodSaveTheKing07@reddit (OP)
I am referring to all of the UK. I think a lot of people in America and outside the UK in general make the assumption that “British” culture is just English. My Great grandfather was Scottish, he was a minister in the Church of Scotland in Stirling, and his grand parents were John Knox and his second wife, whose parents were James IV. Scotland is a beautiful country with a rich and vibrant culture that, although now increasingly is being under “British” ( English) umbrella, is the crown jewel of the British Isles.

I got stopped for speeding driving across Missouri a few years ago. I think my British driving license is what made him let me off with a warning and not a ticket.
It’s actually quite nice hearing of an American who wishes to know more about the UK. I lived in Tennessee for a few years and taught at a state college there, most of my students (18-19 year olds average) didn’t even know the different between England and the United Kingdom.
In your joy and research for all things British, try to avoid coming across as a know-it-all (especially to any Brits). When I went to Uni one of my good friends I made was from Pakistan and he always revelled in saying British pop culture things and acting like I wouldn’t know what he was talking about. And if there ever was something I didn’t know he’d make a whole point to act like he was better than me for knowing despite being a foreigner (he was very into The Beatles, as a reference).

I grew up in Northern England and would be happy to chat to you about some of my community's traditions and culture. The one thing to note, though, is that the UK is more than just London or the South East. You also have Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales in there. All with their own distinct cultures. There are also regional variations. West Yorkshire has some folk traditions that they don't have in, for example, Cornwall and vice versa. We also have some fascinating industrial and political history too!
In short, it's a fascinating collection of islands, but if you really want to understand it and it's people, you need to look further than London and the South East.

So when people say "The King of England", they mean the king of the UK as he is crowned for the whole country (but had to go to each region for their own individual ceremony and historical (and in the case of Scotland - legal) ceremonies.
In fact, it's because Charles's line comes via Scotland (the Stuart line) that we have a monarchy at all in England (the last crowned English king was Edward the Confessor).

At the risk of being presumptuous, are you autistic by any chance? 😅 asking as a (fellow?) Autistic person
GodSaveTheKing07@reddit (OP)
I’m not autistic, but I have thought that I am a touch neurodivergent.
HippySkywalker@reddit
Devon lad, born and bred. True England is outside of London and in the countryside. Anything you want to know, just ask!
Here’s one for free. When eating a scone, the cream goes on first.
GodSaveTheKing07@reddit (OP)
I know that. I won’t fall for Cornish propaganda!
HippySkywalker@reddit
So young and yet so wise!
Are there any areas of U.K. life/culture/society you would like to know more about?
Acrobatic-Ad584@reddit
Don't mention Jaywick
trina999@reddit
Or cream goes on top because it's better. We don't have to hide it under jam!
Kind-Mathematician18@reddit
Butter first, then cream on ONE SIDE ONLY and jam on the other side. Guaranteed to send both devon and cornwall in to a frothing rage.
ElwoodFenris27@reddit
Im going to have to argue that and put butter then jam then cream 😂

I hope you intend to act on the cultural interest and come and visit, just try and understand that Britain isn't just one culture it varies from area to area quite a lot.
TheWanderingEyebrow@reddit
I think it's gonna be funny to read the comments and see if anyone has anything on the 'average brit'

How do Brits broadly feel about American culture?

Don’t come to the UK. You will be both over and underwhelmed with the reality of the place.
Tanglefoot11@reddit
So, on average, just plain old whelmed?
GodSaveTheKing07@reddit (OP)
To everyone: I see some of the comments saying that I’m being too arrogant, I certainly don’t mean to come across as rude or like I’m bragging. All that I mean to say is that I have a knowledge of the UK/ British culture that is not just having tea and crumpets with the queen and Harry Potter. I’m sorry if I came across as the obnoxious American who generalises the entire nation.

This is such a cute post

Sure thing, dm me

Hey, it's cool you're interested in the UK. You might enjoy following 'Very British Problems' if you aren't already.
I have a feeling you may be a fellow neurodivergent with a specialist interest?
Please do be careful of who you get talking to, yeah? You're 18, and there are some right predatory creeps out there. That's not at anyone in the comments, it's just meant as a general comment having read your opening post. I'm sure there are some Brits who'll be happy to chat Brit culture with you. Just..please look after yourself.

I suspect many people online and in person will take the piss or will find it amusing but you don't have to listen to them. I think the issue a couple people would have is the 'people tell me I'm more British than American' part and replying to Americans you know as if you're British but IMO the rest is endearing.
Many Brits tend to have an issue with Americans who loathe themselves or extremely patriotic Americans- liking British culture is very alright itself. You should visit one day if you're interested. If it weren't for the political climate in the USA right now, I'd have loved to visit America and have really wanted to since I was a kid. Foreign places will always be fascinating to people worldwide.

I know teenagers tend to be cocky and can fall victim to the dunning kruger effect easily but if you want to me embraced by british people you need to drop any distastfull braggartry, not take yourself too seriously to the point of taking the piss out of yourself, tone down your skills and smarts etc.
For example lets make up a scenario:
Jeff jefferson says an objective truth "yep i have only been playing the piano for a year now and i have passed my grade 8 and am playing liszt!"
Translating for english people (cant really speak for scottish welsh and nornirn) : "I have really been floggin' mi sen practicing and I think its paying off a little, its a bit sloppy but i can do bits of clasical stuff ! "

Also worth looking in to the regional differences its not just the accents that change

If you’re into certain British media, maybe start there and locate communities around it? A shared interest is a good way to meet people.
westofcentre@reddit
Off course. If you're happy chatting with a 60yo leftward leaning m. UK born with foreign family.
Judging by the amount of interest you've got how about setting up a closed / private subreddit and inviting the people you like the sound of?

Sure, happy to chat if you'd like to, but bear in mind that you'll need to get used to being humble and self deprecating. No showing off here young man 😊
Mr_Coastliner@reddit
Great to hear you have such an interest! If you plan on travelling here, I would definitely ask the group for recommendations. There are some really nice places here but wouldn't want you to end up in an area that dismantles your expectations.
But sure, happy to chat, I'm from the North of the UK which is very different from London for example (although I've lived in London too)
