Why do only black people drive polaris slingshot?
Posted by Zestyclose-Duck-4598@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 778 comments
Or any other brand of 3 wheel vehicle. I have never seen a white dude on those things. They go to parades too like local christmas parade where 10-15 of them cruise in the parade and all of them are black folks. What is the reason ? why others are not buying them?
angryguido69@reddit
And why they have rear speakers that face behind them
DukeofNormandy@reddit
Where I’m from it’s always the mid to late 50s white dudes driving those.
z31@reddit
I live in Atlanta and OP is kinda right, you only tend to see black guys between 25-40 driving them here it seems.
whaler76@reddit
Tbh isn’t that the majority demographic there?
z31@reddit
Minorities are the majority demo, but there are technically still more white people than any other single demographic.
Legitimate_Damage@reddit
In the city of Atlanta? Or metro Atlanta?
McGrufftheGrimeDog@reddit
Im in atlanta (the city) and i see the same thing. literally the parade thing op was talking about i witnessed it at atlantic station. I see at least 3-4 people on those things per week all over the city, near reynoldstown, EAV, the beltline. OP's observation is anecdotal and its heavily reliant on where they live, but from my very limited sample group, it rings true here in Atlanta.
Antique_Brother_9563@reddit
Yes and they are heavily loaded up with lights and brick-a-brack !
McGrufftheGrimeDog@reddit
Idk about all that. Im sure youve seen it, and again anecdotal, but ive seen maybe 1 or 2 loaded up with leds. the rest are stock. some with loud music, some without. a mixed bag
z31@reddit
City
MaximumChongus@reddit
no, its 50/50 white/black for population with the burbs skewing more white than black.
Where that matters is most of the people in the city are commuting into it from the burbs. so it is a disproportionate number rocking the slingshots
stareweigh2@reddit
there's one in Gwinnett who wears a Batman mask and cape while driving his. I used to see him all the time
MysteriousAge28@reddit
Metro Detroit and op is very right lol
taipan__@reddit
I think it’s mostly black dudes driving mostly everything in ATL
Snooch_Nooch@reddit
It really seems to depend where you are. I see older white people on them all the time when at the beach or other tourist/vacation areas, but where I live (central VA) they are almost exclusively driven by black dudes.
scarr3g@reddit
Same, here in Philly.
And I think it is because of marketing. Around here, the only marketing I have seen for them is in predominantly black areas, black media, etc. Plus, as they are usually owned by black people, around here, and heavily modified, they have become a black culture thing that says, "look at me, I have extra money for this toy."
Whereas, mall crawler jeeps, aka "keeps" are the whiteboy, and all races women, thing.... And for generally the exact same, or parallel, reasons.... But with many if the same modifications (large external stereos, multi colored lights (everywhere), bolt on accessories, etc)
And many white dudes, around here, won't buy a slingshot, because they see it as a "black dude" vehicle.
DIYstyle@reddit
So it's only a matter of time before we start liking them
whenveganscheat@reddit
Like durags
FeelSublime@reddit
Drive 30-45 minutes west of Philly though and its all middle aged white dudes with slingshots.
DryRecognition7022@reddit
but in west Philly its the exact opposite.
Responsible-Crew-354@reddit
Maybe the title should have said people in west Philly instead of in general.
scarr3g@reddit
That would not surprise me one bit.
I am originally form northcentwal PA, and they seem more like what "upscale rednecks" would LOVE. essentially a KTM dirt bike, for the street.
Heck, I wanted one, until I realized they are all the drawbacks of a bike, without the benefits. No storage, no rain protection, no hvac, wide as a car, long as a car...
FeelSublime@reddit
Its all dudes who wanted the new corvettes but couldnt afford one.
stareweigh2@reddit
I think it's a lot more affordable than a corvette
scarr3g@reddit
And? You can drive a corvette to work in the rain, even the snow, if you want. It has room for groceries, etc.
Also, at least around here, the only people that own vetted are white guys, with white hair.
stareweigh2@reddit
exactly my point he asked why so many slingshot owners are black men. because old white guys who can afford a toy usually buy a corvette.
Worried-Choice5295@reddit
As far as the Jeep thing, I laughed so hard when one of my favorite podcaster/comedians said "I thought Jeeps were just motorcycles for women."
Mjolnir36@reddit
In NH it’s Boomer Karen’s riding around on those, it’s absolutely fucking hilarious, no self respecting middle age crisis man would be caught on one of those around here ! 🤣
Upnorth4@reddit
In Southern California it's mostly older White people driving those
neonxmoose99@reddit
Agreed. Around Chicago it’s like 90% black dudes driving them
Nihlus_Kriyk@reddit
Sounds about the same across the region, after all these years I recently saw a white man drive a Slingshot for the first time. I think white men primarily go for the Rzr or other side by sides.
TooTiredToWhatever@reddit
Around the Chicago Suburbs I would say it’s mostly…uh…rather husky folks with short legs who really should have used more sunscreen during their youth.
RappingRacoon@reddit
This^ I’ve only seen old white dudes or balding mid life crisis white dudes driving them lol
greycatdaddy@reddit
Same here.
KillahHills10304@reddit
Where I am it's single ~40 year old dudebros who definitely spiked their hair and wore upside down visors in their college years.

That is exactly who drives those cars
CautiousArachnidz@reddit
Your comment smells like Drakkar Noir and Bod.
tronixmastermind@reddit
Yall… yall don’t wear upside down visors anymore? Just wondering
MainelyKahnt@reddit
This! I guess Corvettes are too expensive now? The same demographic that was buying C5 and C6 vettes are now all fawning over the slingshot as their toy to get around the beach town their second home is in.
zinten789@reddit
Be a real man and buy a C4
MainelyKahnt@reddit
I do have love for the C4 wedge shape tho. Very 80's. I just wish crossfire injection didn't suck and that they made them all in manual instead of automatic.
zinten789@reddit
True, crossfire was only for 2 years however. I had a 4+3 manual ‘88 with the TPI engine and it was great!
MainelyKahnt@reddit
I know they were the slowest, but the C3 is my favorite. The stingray body style was the best they ever made. And I'm fully aware the C2 split window fanboys will flame me for it, but the C3 looks better and it's a hill I'll happily die on.
shelbykid350@reddit
Are corvettes any more expensive (as a percentage of avg salary) than they have been in the past?
MainelyKahnt@reddit
Yes, but so are groceries, houses, college tuition etc ... But I think the biggest reason is that Corvette went mid-engine. It no longer has the boomer appeal of "America's sports car" because it now looks like a cheap copy of every European competitor. And therefore the people driving them are cheap copies of their more monied euro counterparts. Also, a lot of the "Corvette guys" around me don't consider them "real Corvettes" because they aren't front engine.
MaximumChongus@reddit
you cant get a loan on a c5/6 now a days because of the cars age.
SagittariusDonkey@reddit
Ouch. Why do I feel attacked?!
NoseResponsible3874@reddit
Because you’re poor
SagittariusDonkey@reddit
Facts. Also a terrible human being.
Outside_Narwhal3784@reddit
Same. Even with with a guy of that description that rides one.
FeistyCanuck@reddit
Midlife crisis but wife would not approve real motorbike... or wants a bike but couldn't manage the balance.
tHr0AwAy76@reddit
Fr I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a non-white person in one of those. And they always look like the type of person who consists solely on Monster and Doritos Loco Tacos. They used to drink Claws but have since moved to Beast for its familiar flavor.
Someguineawop@reddit
100% of the people I've seen driving them are peacock'ing dudes. Lots of Chad-bruh in tanktops on their way to a kegger. It does start getting more specific when you see some neon underglow lights added in 🤣
robotred12@reddit
In my home city black people rent them and drive through town on weekends. They blast R&B and have a good time! You never see white people rent them.
The town I work in now is the complete opposite. It’s middle aged white guys like you say cruising around town on good weather days.
I guess it just comes down to local demographics and what’s around.
Due-Pear-8687@reddit
Spot on…… 3/1 over blacks.
throwaway20176484028@reddit
Yeah I was gonna say 3 wheelers are the boomer mobiles for bike guys that can’t actually ride anymore where I’m at 😂
caustic_smegma@reddit
Definitely a "just retired still divorced white guy" impulse buy in my area. It's like they're from a starter pack.
Confident_Air_8056@reddit
All black dudes in my area. No idea why.
mr_lockwork@reddit
And they are always wearing wrap around sunglasses and cargo shorts.
Cancerisbetterthanu@reddit
As you do
NotScottBakula@reddit
Yep and no one else has a different skin color. OP may be in a bigger city area?
libananahammock@reddit
I’m on long island and I’ve seen one black dude riding one and the rest have all been older white men who seemed just a tad too fragile (?) to ride a motorcycle so this was the next best thing.
CCWaterBug@reddit
With the funny hats
shelbykid350@reddit
The white dudes drive spyders here
Aromatic_Berry_3879@reddit
This post made me laugh. I live in the southeast and I can count on one hand the number of white people I’ve seen driving these things.
cooleybird1975@reddit
Also Southern, and the only others I see on them are chubby middle aged white chicks that spend too much time in a tanning bed.
jonm61@reddit
I see white guys in them in Charleston all the time
Smart-Difficulty-454@reddit
I live in New Mexico. I see these all the time. I almost saw a black guy driving one once. But I was mistaken
stainedhands@reddit
With the black population in az/nm, you could say that about any vehicle.
COCO_SHIN@reddit
Why do black people drive any vehicles?
OrigRayofSunshine@reddit
Same.
Aggressive-Cow5399@reddit
Where I’m from its always Puerto Ricans driving them around.

DeanR_onPSN@reddit
Large* mid to late 50s white dudes
hiji404@reddit
Ditto for my experience around Toronto. One such ~50s white guy even told me his was nearly as fast as the C7 Corvette I was driving at the time lol
Gutter_Snoop@reddit
I have seen every flavor of douchebro and/or midlife crisis men driving those things
Yoshicivic@reddit
Two today I saw were both old white dudes!
lethargicbureaucrat@reddit
Similar where I live except it's 60s white dudes.
LaGrrrande@reddit
Same, both in California and Atlanta.
Fantastic_Joke4645@reddit
Nah, that’s the corvette crowd, we talking slingshot here.
WhiskeyHotdog_2@reddit
I see both where I’m at. I think it’s just a kinda cool vehicle for people who don’t want to go all in on motorcycles and it attracts a specific type of guy regardless of race.
Miserable-Koala2887@reddit
Samsies for my locale. I live in an area with a lot of retired folk. The love them their electric bikes and trikes.
Dong_assassin@reddit
That has also been my experience.
Thegoodlife93@reddit
Yeah my old man is a 61 year old white guy and a couple years ago he traded in his motorcycle for a 3 wheeler (Can-Am Spyder). I'm happy for him because it's safer and still a lot of fun to drive.
kick6@reddit
That’s different then an Xbow or slingshot
maxthed0g@reddit
Not different. Three wheels is three wheels. Whether its 2+1 or 1+2. I miss those Big Ol' post-WWII Harley trikes. In civilian life they served in parking enforcement, and street-level retail ice cream sales. Not at the same time, of course. lol.
kick6@reddit
A slingshot has a windscreen and a steering wheel. A can am Has handlebars. One is a 3 wheeled bike, the other a 3 wheeled car.
Thegoodlife93@reddit
Ah okay. I wasn't really familiar with the slingshot
Sklibba@reddit
This. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen at least a few middle aged dudes on them who aren’t white, but it’s mostly that demographic for sure.
fiddlythingsATX@reddit
Yup
Ok_Employee4891@reddit
I’ve been to every state in the country except Hawaii and Alaska and I’ve never seen a single white person on one ever, Op is on to something
Shadowfeaux@reddit
Lol. I see either the mid/late 50s dudes, or the late 30/early 40s dudes that make the gym their entire identity.
dinkleberrysurprise@reddit
I live in a tourist area and yeah it’s always a middle aged white dude driving his wife, who is white knuckling and wants to be anywhere else in the world. They seem suicidal, frankly.
Br0boc0p@reddit
I love 40 miles from and work in Kansas City. Same thing. At home it's a bunch of white gen x and boomers, at work it's all black dudes.
bloodfeier@reddit
Me too, mostly retiree white people…basically me in another 10-20 years! Though if I wanted a “motorcycle” type vehicle, I’ll just get a motorcycle.
Pan_TheCake_Man@reddit
Personally it seems like the same 300 pound overweight dudes that would end up in a Harley end up getting those too, regardless of race
maljr1980@reddit
This must be the 50 year olds who can’t afford a corvette
winkers@reddit
Same. It’s 40-50 year old white guys with macho bro attitudes. The ones near my drive in the bike lanes and parking lanes. It’s like they wanted motorcycles to lane split but didn’t have the skills to pull it off.
Johnlc29@reddit
With their overly tan wives with too much jewelry.

worry more about getting those food stamps and less about black people buddy
PessimisticPeggy@reddit

WinterWick@reddit
I've never seen a black person in a Slingshot I don't think. Probably depends on your area too
BigBallininBasterd@reddit
I’m in Atlanta and there’s whole convoys of them, all with multicolored lights and loud music lol
dcwhite98@reddit
Applies to Houston as well. It’s got to be 95% of the owners are black.
Which is fine. I have no idea why other people seem not to buy them. I don’t think it’s a “black thing”, they just seem to be the far majority of buyers around here.
Notorious_jib@reddit
Yup exactly. Houston here also. Always thought it was a black thing. Good to know it's variable!
MaximumDerpification@reddit
Charlotte NC checking in... it's the same here. I've always thought it was a bit odd as well.
Ok-Function1920@reddit
Oakland here, we do NOT have those three wheelers in the Bay Area in that way, but we definitely have mobs of 50+ kids on off road motorcycles and ATVs doing wheelies throughout the city
THEENTIRESOVlETUNION@reddit
nah we've definitely got the packs of three wheelers as well lmao, just a LOT less frequent
NotTurtleEnough@reddit
Same in DC
liquidice12345@reddit

Charlotte transplant from Houston.

MisterKillam@reddit
South Carolina, too.
BigBallininBasterd@reddit
I’ve wondered if it’s a rental thing, like a bunch of friends get some for the weekends and ride out in group
kick6@reddit
The ones on Houston are obnoxiously festooned with LED lighting and wakeboard boar stereo gear. No way they’re rentals.
Automatic_Builder158@reddit
Believe it ornot they often are haha. I know a guy who rents them out, and lots of slingshot rental companies know what's up and throw all the lights/wraps/speakers on themselves
kick6@reddit
That’s wild.
User_Name_Is_Stupid@reddit
In Florida it’s definitely a rental thing. No one actually owns them. They just rent them close to the beach.
MaleficentExtent1777@reddit
I definitely have seen them on Turo and at rental places.
ConditionLife1710@reddit
Middle aged black dudes cruise around Houston in these like they cracked the code of cool.

superperps@reddit
Me too man. Same area. Looks like a good time
sellursoul@reddit
That’s what I was gonna say… I rarely see them at all unless it’s royal oak/Ferndale during the summer and down in Detroit. The other I see is the Harley’s with the big front wheels; both also typically with blaring stereos ranging from romantic r&b/soul to gangster shit.
I have come across some white dudes up north on them but the former are way more common in my experience. I’m sure it’s regional just what I see around home haha I get a kick out of the music
MaximumChongus@reddit
Its fucking fun, Ive ridden with a few buds doing dumb shit in slingshots in atl.

WorkingItOutSomeday@reddit
Milwaukee- same. Its usually middle aged, black middle class guys. Ill take them over the younger subset riding dirt bikes and ATVs like it's a Mad Max remake.
EarthDwellr@reddit
In Atlanta I’ve never seen anyone but black dudes aged 35-55 driving them

Quirky-Mode8676@reddit
After reading the comments, I’d agree. Original Poster describes the Dallas and Houston scene for them pretty well.
scuba_steve77@reddit
I don’t think I’ve seen one driven by not a black person what an interesting phenomenon.
1521@reddit
It’s the vehicle version of Tennessee walking horses (a horse with a really fancy way of trotting). I’ve never seen a white person ride one, I’m sure it happens, but you see tons of black folks on them.
hinault81@reddit
Ive only seen older white guys driving them. Like 50s/60s. I just assumed it was older guys who wanted a motorbike but maybe couldn't handle them (balance or whatever) and they went for the seated version.
broken_soul696@reddit
Honestly, it really is. I'm on the only seen white guys driving them and until this post never really thought about that
themastercumblaster@reddit
Oklahoma City has the convoys with all the LED Lights and Subwoofers. We got the country hood folks around here though so the music is good

In Houston, it’s almost a requirement
JCOII@reddit
Used to be neighbors with a black middle aged woman who bought a Can-am Spyder and she asked me to help her offload it from a trailer she rented. It was a tight fit so we had to get creative.
She told me to drive it to get my opinion (avid off-roader, I’ve owned 4 wheelers and Rzr’s). And honestly that thing was f*cking awesome.
She would go riding with a bunch of Spyders and Slingshots all black folks. Those things really caught on with the black community. More power to them those things are awesome.
russiancarguy@reddit
Baltimore for sure has a bunch. To be fair I think any older guy who didn’t buy a corvette has one. It’s cheap fun so I get it, but when I was legitimately curious and asked one how fast it was he tried to brag about it going 150+ …pretty sure they’re limited to 120. He’ll, I won’t drive my RT10 over 140 and I have at least a few more inches of fiberglass 🤣
actualconspiracy@reddit
This is true, there are some areas where every slingshot owner is a fat middle aged white guy with oakleys and terrible facial hair

AbruptMango@reddit
Funny, around here it's a midlife crisismobile for white guys that can't ride a real bike.
Zestyclose-Duck-4598@reddit (OP)
There are a lot of black, white and hispanic people here yet I don’t see mexicans or white people with slingshots
Ok_Barracuda_3410@reddit
It’s dependent on the location you are in and the demographic preferences within that location. On the coast of Mississippi/Alabama you can see several white middle aged men rolling around in Slingshots. I don’t know why that is, but those two states are considered low income. So, it’s probably that it’s obtainable and unique to normal non-car people. Also, there are many Slingshot clubs around the country. It’s possible your community just has a majority black ownership club that is actively recruiting lol
FakeChowNumNum1@reddit
Where I grew up, the neighborhood was mostly italian-American dudes, and we all drove muscle cars. I moved to the south and started to get pulled over for BS reasons pretty frequently, and a neighbor said that my camaro was a "drug dealer car," and "only black people drive them".
fire_alarmist@reddit
I take it from your post history you live in a decent area in the NorthEast, where there literally is only white people lol. No shit thats all you see lol.
AbruptMango@reddit
And those things are still a thing here. White guys cosplaying as bikers.
kc_kr@reddit
They’re not bikes though…?
AbruptMango@reddit
Legally, they are registered as motorcycles. So boomers can pretend that's what they're doing.
kia-supra-kush@reddit
Imo this is something close to the real answer.
I asked OP’s question to a friend one time & he suggested that the difference on insurance between a “motorcycle” like a slingshot & your average convertible is massive, so this is obviously very appealing to working class folks in general.
twosnailsnocats@reddit
I find it very hard to believe people are driving around pretending to be on a motorcycle or saying they ride.
fiddlythingsATX@reddit
They’re not motorcycles in TX
kc_kr@reddit
That’s what trikes are for. Having rented a Slingshot, it feels nothing like a bike, IMO.
Anachronism--@reddit
The can am spyder or a giant Harley tricycle are the can’t ride a bike mid life crisis vehicles.
The slingshot is the mid life I want Ferrari attention on a Miata budget vehicle.

Actually saying something like "why are most urban basketball courts filled with 90% black guys" is significantly different than saying why do all black guys like white women with fat butts".
The first one is not suggesting ALL people of a race do something. It's making an observation from clear evidence about. The other makes a claim across the entire race.
A simpler example: 85% of Hawaiin Punch sold is sold to black families. Is completely different than saying 85% of black families love to drink Hawaiian Punch.
I gather this is obvious but something are raciest and something's are just data

Same in Charlotte. Plus really loud speaker systems.
Back in the day in Alabama I guess I saw white guys with them. But since moving to Charlotte 4 years ago I haven't seen a single white guy on one. It's all black guys.
And whatever, I don't see any women driving them. I see them riding as passengers sometimes. Usually these guys are by themselves. But that's not unusual for toys like that. Maybe women really don't need to have a dick measuring contest or whatever. But you don't normally see them having to get the motorcycle or the slingshot or the sports car and all that.

In my area (New England) it's almost exclusively older white people driving them, but that's kinda to be expected given the local racial demographics.
funcentric@reddit
Poor man's exotic. That's actually on my list of "cars" to get. I love that thing. It's way cheaper than a Rex. I was surprised at the price being that of less than a car. I always thought it was way more exclusive. You can get used ones for reasonable prices too.
It's not always the most financial responsible thing to buy a 3 wheeled 2 person occupant motorcycle if you don't have a car and a garage. But I'm sure everyone's situation varies.
But to answer your question, it's all about image. The chains, the clothing, the kicks, etc. It matters a lot to them for whatever reason. But it is ironic that although they care how they appear, there are of course other activities apart from spending money that totally ignore the "how I look to the public" persona.

OverallManagement824@reddit
It's just folks who are scared of motorcycles and don't want the hassle of a convertible find this appealing. I used to hate them, but honestly, we should all be looking at smaller and lighter vehicles, so I won't piss on their parade, even if it seems lame to me. I'm sure I'd have fun on one for an hour or two.
AFamineIn_yourheart@reddit
As silly as Miata people can be, putting eyelashes on their cars and such I'd be all over a Miata RF instead of this 3 wheeled circus toy.
Grymninja@reddit
Yeah conceptually I don't get these things at all.
Not at all practical.
Also not cool or badass. They look cringe and over compensatory.
Mid performance.
At their price point there's dozens of better options for whatever you're trying to prioritize. I just don't understand why people are buying them. Also every single one I've seen on the road has driven like a total dbag.
OverallManagement824@reddit
As I understand it, conceptually, they allow for lighter vehicles by being legally classified as motorcycles. So think of a normal car, but legally it's a motorcycle. Now, because of lawyers, you can't sell it like a normal car because if it looked like a normal car (Elio), a rational person could conclude it meets some sort of safety standard and then would be shocked when the get sawed in two due to a lack of a safety standard. So make it look exciting like a motorcycle, but don't give it a roof because then it's obviously not meant for day-to-day transportation, make it inconvenient for that. Now put a shitty GM engine in it so parts are cheap and we can make an obscene markup on them.
Seriously, I'm just hating here. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a Slingshot and since I first saw one, I haven't stopped thinking about racing one or what performance challenges might exist. It's not an ideal platform, but challenges are always cool. It looks like fun, just a different kind of fun. There's nothing wrong with enjoying your ride.
TNShadetree@reddit
The hassle of a convertible?
OverallManagement824@reddit
Maybe just the ones I've owned. Yeah they sucked. Always leaking and shit. Cold in the winter. Water getting in places it shouldn't. I've never wanted a convertible, but I wound up with several because they were the more affordable option, but it was always kind of annoying.
ForsakenHour3252@reddit
The convertible Mustang SUCKS ass to drive and feels way too heavy. Some cars are meant to stay as coupes. Fwiw, the convertible Mustang is a few grand more expensive than the coupe.
OverallManagement824@reddit
I always buy used. The invisible hand of the market often corrects such issues within a few years.
And yeah, I wouldn't consider the Mustang and the convertible to even be the same car. M Coupe, Boxster, or a few others, it's a bit closer. If it's cheaper and less abused, I'll just go with it and pocket the savings. They aren't paticularly hard to care for, they're just not as great.
Open_Ebb9532@reddit

Dnlx5@reddit
Dude the slingshot is a fascinating cultural crossing point for several different touchstones.
I have to note that I dont know fuck all about black culture above just being an attentive person in modern society and having one or two black friends along the way.
1 the slingshot is neat. Say what you want about it, but it is a flashy, unique, motorsport-ish, toy-ish vehicle that is purely for fun. Its got a motorcycle engine, exposed suspension, angular bodt... Things just cool as long as you arent too stuck up.
2 the slingshot is safe. Maybe not as safe as a honda Odyssey, but its way safer than a motorcycle. This allows for people who care about not dying, as well as people who dont have experience riding bikes.
3 Slingshot is affordable. Maybe not cheap, but reachable by responsible middle class, or irresponsible poor class, and trivial for rich people.
4 slingshot is flash, I think this is where white guys end up with miatas or harleys and black guys end up with slingshots. Theres definitely something in Black culture about showing off your success with flash. And between the angular body style, the neon lights, not to mention the custom options. These things get noticed.

Pretty much sling shots are liked by people who enjoy being obnoxious and annoying. If you love in a place where there is a huge portion of blacks, this is likely the case. The same way white obnoxious people would either get one of those or a huge diesel truck.

Earlier, I had asked him why he bought his. He, in essence, responded that it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Raalf@reddit
its marketing. I've lived in Texas and Florida - in both cases it was almost entirely middle-aged black dudes with extra lights and flair. When they did marketing events, it was targeted at specific shows, locations, and audiences.
Why they chose that target audience, I don't know.
It's not a matter of who buys them, it's who decides they want them.
If you don't believe this is possible, look up why subarus are driven by their current audiences.
Rich-Instruction-327@reddit
I doubt Polaris targeted black customers from the start and it was probably a shift overtime as Polaris recognized who was buying the car and doubled down on marketing for that segment.
Raalf@reddit
interesting you think there's no ability to change market focus over time. Again, look at subaru marketing - it hasn't always been about outdoors, dogs, and the like.
not_a_gay_stereotype@reddit
This might be it. Look at white BMW's. What's the demographic for those? Nissan Altima, Chrysler 300, they all have a demographic lol. Not even a race thing it's more of a "personality" thing. Same thing with Saabs and Volvo's usually driven by an older and very particularly eccentric white man

I think a lot of black people are scared to go far into the woods honestly. So it’s like the black equivalent of having a razor/side by side which is a big thing for the whites these days.
Black people I’ve known were uncomfortable being in rural areas so i would think that would translate to something like ATV trails. And im not saying ALL black people its just something Ive noticed in my area with the people i have known.
Short-Belt-1477@reddit
Depends on your area.
I was in Arkansas, the only people in slingshots were old, bald, smelly white dudes.
I was in Hartford, CT, the only people in skingshots were old, bald, smelly black dudes.

Anecdotal, but the only Slingshot owner I personally know is an older white lady at church.

Weird. Ive only ever seen white people driving them. But even then I never thought to ask this question because I dont see many of them on the road at all, so my sample size is very limited.

I noticed this recently and asked that question to Google. It's how I landed here. I have NEVER witnessed anyone else driving one either.
It turns out Polaris marketed it heavily towards the black demographic and got things like the "black women ride" group to endorse it or whatever. In short it's targeted at them, that's why.
ViolatoR08@reddit
Because they’re almost always a rental. At least here in South Florida.

Yachtman96@reddit
Don’t make it a racial issue! I don’t think op has a problem with it, but in his area he was wondering why he only sees blacks driving them. I live south of Houston and 99.99% of the times I see them on the road, it’s driven by a black male. I don’t have a problem with it either, but often wondered the same thing. I wonder why more whites in my area don’t drive them. They seem like pretty cool vehicles, but not for me.

Because they are cheap, easily customizable to be loud and disruptive and look different so as to get attention. It’s the hood rich vehicle equivalent of gold teeth, spending your ebt on the latest Jordans or any other typically obnoxious behavior in public.
Bulky-Force-1221@reddit
The Slingshot, like many entirely unsafe, impractical vehicles, is often a manifestation of insecure masculinity. You probably live nearby some men who happen to be black and have issues with self-identity and want to fill a hole in their life with a car/vehicle/motorbike and chose Slingshots... which, as far as things go, aren't bad for what they are. The LE5 isn't a bad engine and it's pretty decent power for the size of the Slingshot.
No-Bike-1376@reddit
Because they cant ride? And the outfit ALWAYS matches the crazy paint 😂

Zp6827@reddit
There’s not really an answer, why do white guys (and Mexicans) love lifted trucks? Why do a ton of younger black dudes love Hellcats? Why are low riders almost exclusively driven by Hispanic dudes? Cars, like everything else, tend to catch on in certain cultures. Then when a couple of your friends are into it, you’re more likely to think it’s cool as well. I got a GTI because I’m a millennial white guy and my friends growing up who were car guys (mostly white dudes) were into German performance cars.
The one thing I want to note is that car culture is kinda rad because basically everyone is interested in why you like what you like. Plenty of intermingling between those groups because, at the end of the day, everyone is just super into cars and that common ground is HUGE, even if the types of cars you’re into are totally different.
jskrummy@reddit

It did not do well on highways even with the tall windscreen. It handled terribly to the point that I was scared to push it. In my late 30s, white. I sold it to a black guy who fell in love with it. I'm in central Florida and it's 98% POC, 1.5% tourist rentals and .5% white guys.
Now, I was a manager at a Polaris/Can-Am dealership when the slingshot was launched. Here's my take on why the demographics favor one group more than others. Slingshots and Spyders are a low entry barrier for people that may not have experience around traditional motorcycles. Now picture a freshly retired black guy looking for a new thing to spend their extra time and money on. They might want a motorcycle, but he doesn't feel like taking a class and all of that. So slingshots and Spyders allow him to jump right on with minimal experience/training and do pretty good, and it's still about 95% motorcycle so you can still go to bike nights. Maybe it's a southern thing but if there was anything I learned, every retired black dude I have ever known has had that one thing that they will absolutely pour all of their free time into. And one of those things is a slingshot. ¯\(ツ)/¯
fiddlythingsATX@reddit

pm-me-racecars@reddit
A Morgan Three Wheeler is one of the old-white-dude-est cars I know of.
Also, the people I see driving sling shots are mostly middle aged men who are trying to distract themselves from their balding.
JizzyMcKnobGobbler@reddit
Why throw the baldism in there? Just curious. Not really anything a bald guy can do about being bald. I can promise you buying a fricken Can-Am would do nothing to improve how one would feel about going bald.
ForsakenHour3252@reddit
I think the stereotype is that bald men generally overcompensate by driving wild shit like the slingshot and convertible sports/exotic cars
If you want to do something about it, save up like $5k and hop on a flight to Turkey. That'll probably what I'll do over the next five years, and I'm not even 30 at the moment (but I will have pretty severe male pattern baldness by then)
JizzyMcKnobGobbler@reddit
I think at your age it is more troubling and stressful to lose your hair. I started going pretty bald at about 32, but was married with two kids. I don't love it, but I am 100% okay with it.
It's not money preventing me from a hair transplant...just not interested. If I were single and younger I'd do it, I think.
pm-me-racecars@reddit
Nothing against balding men intended, I am sorry for offending you on that. I have several bald friends who all rock it.
Everything against people who are having natural changes happen to them and instead of embracing them, try to hide those things. You can change balding to pretty much any other change that normally happens to men between 30 and 45.
JizzyMcKnobGobbler@reddit
Yeah, fair enough and I'm not offended at all.
Get__Lo@reddit
While in Texas I notice mostly black guys riding Can-Am Spyders and Slingshots, the Harley Tri-Glide is the ultimate white guy mobile
pm-me-racecars@reddit
Okay, when you said three wheeled vehicle, I was thinking of the ones you drive, not ride.
I'd put the Polaris Slingshot with the Campagna Scorpion, Morgan 3-Wheeler, and Vanderhall Venice. I wouldn't include the Spyder or Tri-Glide with those.
Get__Lo@reddit
where I live the only common ones are the Tri-Glide, Spyder, and Slingshot. I cant remember seeing any others apart from one custom lookin thing that a young white woman was driving, it was a Retro-modern looking thing with a roof and was more like the Slingshot than it was a Spyder

I live in a suburban of a major city, and I see a 50/50 split between older white haired guys, and younger black dudes. Couldn't tell you why. I had a chance to drive one, whichever one came with the ecotec engine, and it was pretty fun. Motorcycle experience with the wind and stuff, but you can sit comfortably and not tip over. More comfortable than a Miata. Unique driving experience and handling characteristics. I can't imagine they're terribly expensive, especially secondhand.

Most the guys that drive them were kids when t-rex’s were the hot thing to be driving down the block. Especially here in NY. These days the slingshot is a cheaper alternative to the trex.
Dirty_Shisno_@reddit
I got one of those annoying douchebag neighbors that owns one and squeals the rear tire all the time. I talked to him once and that was enough for me. He’s white, like late 30s early 40s, but wears pit viper sunglasses
Fancy_Round@reddit
🤣🤣😂😂man…. Go touch grass. Or just go to sturgis in South Dakota
BoK_b0i@reddit
I think I've only ever seen white people drive them. Usually white guys in their 40s-50s with 20 something girlfriends
Throwaway17810@reddit
I’ve noticed it in my city (Albuquerque, New Mexico). It’s either them or old white guys
Spiegel_S74@reddit
I see a lot of fat white ladies on them lmao
proscriptus@reddit
I have not one time in my life seen anyone other than a white person in a Slingshot.
CaptainKrakrak@reddit
I’ve never seen a black guy driving those vehicles, it’s usually boomers or older gen x white dudes.
davabran@reddit
The worst thing about whoever is driving them they all have the custom speakers on the sides pointing out away from it.
theAshleyRouge@reddit
Not sure where you live, but when I lived in Florida it was pretty much exclusively middle aged white men that had them.

All that have them is west Texas is roughnecks And I’m sure it’s because it’s really hard to kill them.
Miserable-Assistant3@reddit
They probably unemployed and listening to Tierra Whack
ildadof3@reddit
Saw two slingshots today. Both white guys. Looks like fun. U seem like a racist fool.
Gamer30168@reddit
I saw a couple dozen of them pass my job today. They look fun!
CobraChuck83@reddit
They’re really not. It’s a Cavalier/Cobalt with one wheel and the roof Sawzalled off lol
JizzyMcKnobGobbler@reddit
I rented one in Vegas to go to some canyon. Needed a rest from typical Vegas stuff.
On no planet are they anything like a Cavalier lol. Like that's the most ridiculous comparison I've ever heard.
They are their own thing. Is that thing fun? No. In fact, it's pretty embarrassing and kind of cringe to be on one; however, it is a totally unique driving experience that is less fun than a bike and less fun than a car, so you're not wrong to shit on them.
I will say if all my friends got one I'd get one, too. I like squading up and doing stupid stuff, so a big gang of us on those would be right up my alley.
Crazy_Mix_8260@reddit
I've only ever seen white people drive them. One of my neighbors has one she's a 45 year old white woman. I don't know what you're talking about.
ActualHuckleberry995@reddit
Yep just black people around here on them

We are inherently flashy people and like being "seen". Next question.
thatG_evanP@reddit
I don't know about the race of people driving them, but the amount of them I see with a bunch of speakers mounted facing outwards tells me all I need to know about the person driving it. They're basically the next step up from Bluetooth speakers in public.
FloridamanHooning@reddit
Florida man here, I only see white people, that typically shouldn't be allowed to drive , on those things lol
totallyspicey@reddit
I have never seen a woman drive one
Martin-wav@reddit

The_Platypus_Says@reddit
Depends on the area. Here in Memphis I only see them driven by black folks. When I go to St. Louis I see black and white folks with them.
BestNoob782@reddit
Maybe you just live in an area with a lot of black people???
gujwdhufj_ijjpo@reddit
Where I’m at its usually gray haired white guys driving them. Usually.
BigIreland@reddit
Uncs out doing unc shit. They to rock big giant custom motorcycles blasting the Gap Band but a bunch have moved over from those to the Slingshots. Let them enjoy their toys. They’ve earned it at this point in their lives.
AustinRhea@reddit
💀
SendMeCnBTorturePics@reddit
Las Vegas checking in. This is the official tourist car here. Frequently found in the Red Rock scenic loop driven by people unprepared for the hair flying in their face or getting rained on.
Melodic_Hysteria@reddit
You have slingshots?
I think I have seen a title of 3 my entire life? And every time, it was in a group setting where someone said something along the lines of:
Visual_Calm@reddit
The please look at me crowd likes those abominations. To each there own I guess
digits937@reddit
My dad is very white and drives one
NashCop@reddit
They want motorcycles but they’re afraid of them.
recovereez@reddit
Same in Louisville KY
Casalf@reddit
I’ve seen all kinds of mfs driving this. Maybe it’s just your area that’s like that or you just haven’t been on the road to see Any others drive it.
WaterIsGolden@reddit
How many black people are you seeing with Slingshots in Hungary?
Or are you asking for a Nazi friend?
skibbin@reddit
This is true in my area. Never seen a while guy on a 3 wheeler, never seen a black guy on a Harley.
Also what's it with black guys and the Chrysler 300? They look pretty cool, so maybe the right question is what's with white guys and not driving them.
T_Rey1799@reddit
I’ve only seen 50 yr old white dudes, so I don’t know where you’re coming from
SaintMotel6@reddit
I’m in [INSERT-LOCATION-HERE] and I only see [INSERT-MINORITY-HERE] drive [INSERT-VEHICLE-I-DON’T-LIKE]. Weird, huh?🤔☝️
nevadapirate@reddit
I've only ever seen old white dudes on those things. Even the 2 different police chase videos Ive seen were both old white dudes.
Born4Nothin@reddit
Because they look expensive. There’s your answer lol.
idahokj@reddit
Never seen a black person driving one… ever.
chance0404@reddit
Slingshots are extremely popular with old, retired white dudes. Idk that I’ve ever even seen a black guy in one…
9BALL22@reddit
They are for people who can't ride a motorcycle or afford a true performance car. Friend groups and clubs form among similar vehicles, like bikes, Mustangs, Miatas, Corvettes ect. I don't think race has much to do with it, other than the fact that in some groups the majority of members are of the same race or ethnicity.
Dank_Vader32@reddit
I only see old, overweight balding white dudes driving those here. Remember there are no weird questions, only weird people, and you seem super weird.
Affectionate-Box2768@reddit
Think about your question a little more in depth.
ZachOf_AllTrades@reddit

I'm not sure if this is a joke question or not, but I've only ever seen generic white guys driving slingshots.
reesemccracken@reddit
You lead a sheltered life
Because they can’t swim
gpetrov@reddit
I am In Detroit and have been in Chicago. I have wondered the same. Only black dudes and dudettes driving those. I’ve see gatherings of 30+ of those things and always without an exception it’s a black driver.

I've only seen old white guys drive them and I've lived in DC, Georgia, and Hawaii.

Because they look like something out of a Big Tymers music video in the late 90s.

Ive seen like 3 of them in the wild, like, ever... all being driven by white guys.
BigDaddyDumperSquad@reddit
I've seen plenty of 30-something white dudes driving those.
cakeod@reddit
I mean, probably 80% of the ones I see in my city are black guys, but there's a decent amount of middle aged white dudes driving them around too. Of course, we also have a lot of black Harley riders around here too, so it's kind of a mix between the two if you want to be an obnoxious middle aged man of any race.
BroccoliNormal5739@reddit
Neighbors lesbian sister and her crowd are in Slingshots.
ZachOf_AllTrades@reddit

For sure black red necks.

And then we have quite a lot of Trikes in germany, those stupid "chopper front, car back" things, and i think the main target audience for those is people who want to be a biker like they've seen in movies but they lack the coordination to have both feet on the ground so they dont fall over
Warm-Patience-5002@reddit
There’s a strong , young , black middle class and they want to have fun . In Miami , I see a bunch of black dudes on jet skis having the time of their lives at the sandbars, like aquatic biker gangs . I for one , want to join in and land me one of those girls in a neon g -string.

I see a lot of 60's white dudes driving them around north dakota. My coworker has one. He's a 70 year old welder.

Funny in Northern NH I only see white people driving those.
suspendeddisbebeef@reddit
The only slingshots I see in my area are driven by petite Asian women in their 30s

I've never seen a black person in one of these in my area (north texas), just older white couples. Except my cousin, she black. She got one but she lives in California.
theuberprophet@reddit
One morning i went to the local trendy gas station off the highway and there was a platoon of about 20 slingshots, trikes and other atypical vehicles of the sort. Half the people were black. They were grouping up to do a day drive across the state for a bigger meetup of those things.

I don’t think black people only drive these. I’ve seen some white people in them. The funny thing about these Slingshots though, is that they’re like an omen on wheels. When you see one cruising by, it’s a sign that you’ve crossed an event horizon, and you’re about to see a lot of the local wildlife spilling out from the bars and clubs nearby.
Surfing_puffin@reddit
I can't think of a more mild life crisis old money devorced church choir boy credit card biker cracker vehicle than a Polaris Slingshot. It's possible that it's something different elsewhere.

Wait until you go to Puerto Rico. You'll discover a world of Puerto Rican bros in slingshots bumping the most aggressively awful reggaeton you've ever heard. I would know, I'm Puerto Rican and visit often, and in San Juan, oh boy.
DetectiveNarrow@reddit
I’ve seen a mix. Most people have em to rent it out

As someone who worked for polaris for a brief period, I can tell you that your premise is simply false lol
Anachronism--@reddit
It’s only middle aged white guys around my area.
People don’t buy them because for roughly the same money you could get a real sports car with much better performance.
People do buy them because you get more attention than someone driving a Ferrari for low end sports car money.
