I went to the X Games when they first came to SF. They were giving away mini beach balls. The local WBC type group leader was out front with his signs and a bullhorn. It was common to see him and maybe a couple followers at events and tourist spots around the city.
Anywho, he was ranting about gays burning in hell or something of that nature, so punk teenage me walked up and stuffed my beachball into his megaphone in delightfully cartoonish fashion. He turned the megaphone around to look at it dramatically, and in that moment a very large, very butch lesbian stepped up and absolutely leveled him with a punch. He lay on the ground screaming for police. A cop sauntered over, wrote him a ticket for unpermitted use of an amplified device, and dropped it on him. Obviously the cop was already familiar with him. And yes, everyone clapped.
We've always kinda sucked, too.
I know this only makes the story even more unbelievable, but it's part of it that happened so whatever... The cop's car had a "Bad Cop, No Donut" sticker sitting on the dash. So he definitely had a sense of humor, but it was of course playing off the fact that even back then, most cops were bastards. There has always been a hateful, authoritarian streak in this nation.
One of my favorite memories 😁.
We also pretty much ditched the actual XGames in favor of going to Hubba's Hideout to watch some "real" professional skating.
