$250k+ earners, What car are you driving?
Posted by Born_Alfalfa3303@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 1331 comments
Car guys looking to see what cars youāre driving with incomes $250k - $350k in the late 20s- Early 30 year old range?
ktappe@reddit
Note: You are asking *earners* for what car they drive. You've forgotten/neglected to ask what high net worth people are driving. You might get very different answers. People who still have to work are often trying to impress people. Those with a lot of net worth who don't have to work don't have to impress anyone.
KeyAirport6867@reddit
Bezos is high net worth and he rented an Italian city for his second marriage. High net worth people still try to impress people
Benson_86@reddit
Most people I know who are earning arenāt trying to impress anyone, theyāre too busy working and with family to care about fancy cars. Itās the retirees with high net worth who have some time to buy a fun car, and they also donāt care what others think.
wickedcold@reddit
I think the ātrying to impress peopleā factor is way overblown. Especially in a sub of car enthusiasts. I couldnāt care less what anyone else thinks of me. If I could afford to drive an f355 or a Maranello Iād do it for the sheer joy of it.
too_old_still_party@reddit
I literally hang out in my garage and look at my cars. I love cleaning them.
Ok-Drawing4639@reddit
Reddit doesnāt understand that some people like cars. Yes, they are a luxury, but that doesnāt mean you are an idiot for spending extra on them.
Imagine trying to convince people who play musical instruments to buy the cheap/beginner version of their violin or piano because it ādoes the same thing.ā
People who like cars will spend more on cars. People who donāt care about cars will spend less on cars. You arenāt any smarter or dumber for having a nice car. The only time this is the case is when someone who doesnāt know much about cars still overspends on a car they canāt afford.
wickedcold@reddit
Itās also funny when people will chime in that āfamous billionaire X actually drives a Nissan Sentraā which is absolutely ridiculous, when you find out that said billionaire actually has a collection worth $50m and is frequently photographed being chauffeured in a Bentley.
Ok-Drawing4639@reddit
Right, lol. Suprised he doesnāt live in a tent as well and eat instant ramen noodles for every meal.
wickedcold@reddit
āThatās why theyāre rich!ā
No theyāre rich because theyāre fucking billionaires. Lots of poor people also drive shitty cars and eat cheap food and theyāre still poor.ā
brokeskylurker@reddit
Right, I love the 360 Modena and the f430 for reasons that would just sum up as āpassionā. I donāt think they would be seen as a flex, itās just cool to us to have our poster cars as kids and maybe do some of our own wrench work in our garage. When I was in my 20s I definitely cared more. Would probably shell out for a 488 if I had todayās salary back then, when a 360 would make me just as happy today!
WoodenNet8388@reddit
I used to care a whole lot about what other people think of me, and I wanted fast, fun cars to look to others. Now I still want the same cars, but couldnāt give two flying ducks what anyone else thinks of me. I just really like the cars š
AWill33@reddit
In my experience among high earners/net worth we are much more likely to notice a smart/clever choice for a car over something flashy. Guarantee the guy in an 89 wagoneer has more $$ than your average boxster leasee.
Ok_Stranger_9520@reddit
Not sure this matters. Car people like cars, doesnāt necessarily mean theyāre flexing, my dude.
JoshPlaysUltimate@reddit
I donāt think either need to impress anyone.
NeverBirdie@reddit
Thatās what I thought until I started hanging around other Bank execs for my job. They all drive Mercedes or Audi sedans and a couple teslas. Then I show up with in my Silverado but Iām also 25 years younger than most of them.
JoshPlaysUltimate@reddit
I love silverados. I wish they would make a early 90ās square body style but with todayās interior
asiandevastation@reddit
Facts. Iāve loved cars since I was a kid, went to school for cars, work in the car business, and love driving. Compliments on my cars are nice but I usually respond with an awkward thank you if itās a stranger.
But yes, there have been times to have a fun little flex.
hiimmatz@reddit
How is the vantage treating you? Do you put many miles on it? Considering a 2020+ as a daily (have an SUV and pickup for the kiddos). Biggest concern is insurance and maintenance since Iām not close to a dealer and unaware of any Indy mechanics in my area.
asiandevastation@reddit
I love it, had it two years and drive it daily. Iāve only put about 8k miles on since my commute is short and I take the Q8 for longer drives. Annual service is about 2500 a year at the Astonās dealer.
fupayme411@reddit
Non car people think car people like cars to show off. I donāt understand it because I love cars and hate attention like you.
smoothiegangsta@reddit
A lot of people outside of a hobby believe those in that hobby do it to show off. Like popping wheelies on a motorcycle, or having a loud exhaust. Those people do it because they enjoy it and 9 times out of 10 they do not care about the opinion of the mom in the CRV.
ArmedAsian@reddit
to be fair, the exhausts installed on some of these g35s are so obnoxious that i have a hard time believing those (as in people that install deafening fart can exhausts) arenāt attention seeking people
AudiB9S4@reddit
Same. As a designer, I absolutely love cars and can now afford to own vehicles Iāve always dreamed about - one in an outrageous color that Iām addicted to, but hate the attention. I wish I could drive and appreciate them without the spectacle.
Vorcia@reddit
Nah in certain fields there's definitely a vibe to project that instills confidence in clients where your vehicle does matter (but I wonder about the ROI of it).
withsexyresults@reddit
Iād hate to be an industry where you have to get a car to match an image. Itās like you gotta spend your own money on a car you might not even want
JoshPlaysUltimate@reddit
Well, f150 was not only the most sold truck in USA, but most sold vehicle overall for a while. I donāt think itās a flex to drive the most common thing.
Vorcia@reddit
I think it's a flex, they're not exactly cheap, especially for the Raptor, the practicality benefits over older trucks or a van aren't that significant, but it's about projecting the image of a sturdy business that's successful enough to afford a new(er) truck.
JoshPlaysUltimate@reddit
Youāre probably right. I just feel like if Iām thinking of a vehicle to flex with, it might not be the most commonly bought vehicle in the country. But on the other hand does that just mean that many people are flexing? Haha
Vorcia@reddit
Unironically yes, I've seen some consumer surveys and most trucks aren't used for work, it's just people that like the idea of looking more rugged which is why they've been trending towards more SUV-like interiors with better comfort, more passenger space, etc.
JoshPlaysUltimate@reddit
Most people I know with trucks donāt use them for their day job but the do use them to move large items around a lot.
dank_cny@reddit
āYou asked this question, but what about this entirely different and tangentially related question that you didnāt ask?ā
For_ohagen@reddit
What do you consider high net worth?
I still earn but prob meet your definition of high net worth too.
We drive a ford and Toyota. Fancy. Haha
therealsimontemplar@reddit
Your last two sentences are nonsense, but I agree with the first three. I work because itās what I do. I drive what I drive because itās what I want. When I bought my Mercedes new the one thing I hated about it was peopleās reactions because to them it was all about the price tag, but I bought it because it was a Mercedes diesel and the last year before dpf nonsense. 20 years later I still have it because itās still everything I want in a car.
shawn59fifty@reddit
Scrolling down to this comment ive seen nothing but honda odysseys kias and ford rangers. I think the only legitimate flex ive seen so far was a grand national and thats not a rich guy flex. That's a cool guy flex.
Vorcia@reddit
It's bc Reddit loves the idea of the frugal rich person so that's what's being upvoted, but there's a few responses that are more of a flex, just not being upvoted as much.
SithSidious@reddit
I feel like itās the opposite. Iām a high earner, but Iām in the ābuild wealthā phase so I still drive my 8 year old GTI and plan on driving it for at least a few more years
No_One_6384@reddit
Iām both and I drive the car I wanted which is still an āexpensiveā carā¦sure I could have tried to impress others with a McLaren or something but they are a dime a dozen around here anywayā¦thereās nothing I could get my hands on or the average NBA player could get their hands on in my town that 5 other people around here donāt have already anyway.
icehole505@reddit
Youāve got it backwards. People who are in the earning phase (and who want to escape it) are probably less likely to spend on luxury. Once youāve accumulated wealth, itās a lot easier to justify spending on hobbies.. as youāve already finished the work to get ācompounding interestā rolling.Ā
entsnack@reddit
So which one are you, a higher earner or high network worth? And what do you drive?

fbgm0516@reddit
I want to some day swap an m119 into a w124 wagon. Someday
RabidBlackSquirrel@reddit
Tbh buying my 124 earlier in my career would have saved me money. Even though I'm a crazy person for going all in on a first gen 4matic, it's still been one of the most affordable cars I've ever owned. Total, I'm in it less than a new base Nissan Altima. And that includes having the trans out and rebuilt, transfer case rebuild, and all the other usual old car shit and sparing no expense along the way.
Wonderful car. If something happens to it, I'll buy another 124 in a heartbeat, they're just so damn good.
Low-Friendship4401@reddit
I went older and got a 123 diesel wagon which I daily drive. Used to have a 93 w124 wagon which was awesome until the head gasket blew on the m104 engine. Iād buy another in a heartbeat if it had the head gasket replaced.
BadgerTight@reddit
Stopping myself every week from buying a w123 project. Have any pics of yours?
Low-Friendship4401@reddit
Itās just a regular 300td in midnight blue. More beat up than showroom perfect š 123s are fantastic cars. I really do consider them some of the best cars of all time now that I have experienced putting about 50k miles on one. I wish I would have bought one at least 10 years back. There were so many in local Southern California junkyards, could a fixed one up much easier.
RabidBlackSquirrel@reddit
Mine is gonna need that eventually, luckily the m103 tends to just leak out the back instead of making forbidden chocolate milk. Currently just wet, not dripping or anything, but I'm expecting the next 30k or so it'll need doing proactively.
RoomyCard44321@reddit
Sure are. I currently have my trans out of my 124 because my reverse went out lol

Resident_Net_7262@reddit
Stuff doesn't own you if you actually have a interest/hobby/passion for it. The way you're speaking about cars only applies if you buy a nice car to show off to other people vs something you personally enjoy.
beholdthemoldman@reddit
This will shock u, but ppl like different things
He was asking "carguys"
inqurious@reddit
Nothing is so cut and dry. From the standpoint of someone deep into a consumer culture (cars, sneakers, watches, whatever), you might think more money means you'll want more of whatever car, sneaker, etc.
Often the wealthier folks are less consumption driven. Not 100%, sure. I was showing one data point of how making enough money means your concerns can change. Or once your concerns change from the next status symbol car, you might orient towards behavior that's more likely to make you wealthy.
lovesickremix@reddit
I find it whatever people with a lot of money have as a hobby will be the thing they spend their money on. If they like cars they will spend their money on cars, if they like money, they will spend more money on money. This also comes with the caveat that it also depends on which they value more.
Sad_Cover2632@reddit

Except that the BMW E-series is one of the most famous series of cars ever, so if you say E40, you look like youāre trying to imply you drive an e-series, something somehow halfway between an E36 and E46.
Nobody would guess that you actually mean a bmw i4ā¦

Just admit you were wrong. Like the other comment said, there actually are E models (E21, E30, E36, E46, E90 for 3 series), so you saying E40 is implying something completely different.
No_Ingenuity_3285@reddit
Sorry, i4, the one with rear wheel drive and no m package. Sorry I was not accurate enough in specifying the model I have. I just wanted an electric car with a decent range that isn't a Tesla and makes my commute more interesting. I don't know or care enough about cars to intentionally imply I drive a certain model I don't .

This isn't the humble flex you think it is. Your Subaru isn't immune to road hazards, including flat tires and accidents. So while you boast about a 3% greater reliability over the next brand, I'm driving a car that I enjoy and calling AAA and Uber if it breaks down. I worry more about other drivers than my brand-new cars breaking down in the middle of the road.

Midnightsnacker41@reddit
One of my goals for my midlife crisis is to get a fun car out of it, so I'm taking notes!
DefiantLaw7027@reddit
Somehow I convinced my wife to let me get a fun car for my 40th. But we were in a decent place financially, thought we werenāt going to move for a while, mortgage was almost paid off and all that.
Started planning what it would be. Wanted something RWD, manual, no screens and as analog as possible without being too old or unreliable. Also wanted something that would at least hold some value. Kinda settled on either a boxster/cayman or 1M but opted for the 1M because I like cars that are a rare/odd/unique.
Found one pop up on an auction site that checked all the boxes and said fuck it, Iām going for it and won. Had to tell my wife and let her know that I jumped the gun by a couple years and didnāt need to get one when I turned 40.
Then the next week we bought a new house. So timing worked out great because there was no way I could justify buying one after committing to a big mortgage.
I donāt know if there are any lessons in there but thatās my story!

I think there is something fun about hearing real stories. Glad it worked out for you!

I'm not quite there.... I'm at ~200, but in a very low cost of living area. I'm rocking a Buick Encore. $14k out the door at 2 years old with 12,000 miles on it. I've been driving it for 6 years and it now has 160k on it and has been great. 35+ miles to the gallon, small but big enough to carry around anything I'm going to, and drives very nicely. It's got a cool 140 horsepower, but it has enough pep to be respectable whenever I want to pass on the freeway, and I ain't racing anyone anyways so that's all I'm looking for - I'm middle aged and fuel economy is cooler than fast these days. I'm going to run it in to the ground before I get something else. I've owned several really cool, flashy, fast cars in my life. You know who cares and who you're impressing? It isn't the girls. They just want you to drive something that's not a complete shitbox and then they're happy. Other dudes are the only ones that notice. Some people want to put themself in poverty affording that Ferrari... Me? I'll take my nice driving econobox all day long and enjoy the early retirement. And if you want to impress the girls, save that car payment and buy an impressive house. At least it's an appreciating asset!

name4231@reddit
Anyone that itās cool too sure as hell doesnāt think itās cool cause of jay z
wpmason@reddit
A guy I knew had one in high school (circa 2000)⦠such a great sleeper. Looked like any other old G-body that were a dime a dozen back then.
Another guy had a 4th Monte Carlo SS with a 305 V8⦠those only made 180 hp compared 235-245 ho on later Grand Nationals.
itsjakerobb@reddit
235-245 is what they were rated. They made more than that. IIRC, mine made 300 to the wheels with just a light tune (the condition in which I bought it).
It makes a lot more now. Havenāt been back to the dyno yet though.
wpmason@reddit
Stock, yeah⦠it was the 80s, Detroit had only just figured out how to make power again after the Malaise Era.
In 1984, the 3.8 got sequential fuel injection and electronic ignition that gave it 200hp.
Lots of tweaks boosted power over the years.
The 1987 GNX, the best of them all, was right at 300hp.
itsjakerobb@reddit
Again, rated 300. It made more.
wpmason@reddit
No, because GM rated it at 276⦠actual was 300.
itsjakerobb@reddit
They made 290+ to the wheels. Thatās 340-350bhp, maybe more.
wpmason@reddit
Youāre talking nonsense. Cite some sources.
They were 290-315hp at the crank, stock.
I saw a report of a dyno run where it had 210hp at the wheels.
Fuck, dude, a Countach from the same time only made 449hp at the crank.
itsjakerobb@reddit
210whp would have been a GN, not a GNX.
I googled ā1987 gnx actual wheel horsepower.ā The results are mostly forums, and none seem reputable enough on their own to cite as a source ā but the consensus seems to be 290-315, with the variability due to a factory adjustable wastegate that wasnāt adjusted consistently at the factory.
wpmason@reddit
I can find those forums too⦠and since manufacturers always give HP ratings at the crank, I think this guyās comment is entirely credibleā¦
So, a standard Grand National then would have been at around 245 crank hp. Getting 210 at the wheels is entirely in line with the old rule of thumb that the driveline wastes 15-20% of the engineās power.
So, a 300 crank hp GNX would realistically be around 250 at the wheels.
It canāt have more HP at the wheels than at the crank.
For the last time⦠it was the mid-80ās. Engines just werenāt that powerful from the factory.
Corvettes in the 80s were packing less than 250 HP. And 3rd gen Camaros started at 145 hp and barely broke 225 in the late 80s.
Thatās what made a 225+ HP V6 in a G-Body so damn wild and unexpected.

Iām here to give my appreciation for the $6000 regular cab 3/4 ton truck to do truck things when needed.
I keep wanting to add something like that to my driveway, but the fact that thereās a good sized U-Haul location minutes from my house makes it tough to justify. They make it really easy to go swap a car for any size truck or van I may need for a given task. For most jobs, Iām a fan of their little 10ā box trucks. Perfect new couch or appliance hauler. I average 1-5 times per year that I need to haul something I canāt/donāt want to with my cars.
But it sure would be nice to get the motivation for dump run (city does curbside pickup for the regular stuff) without going there before and after.

itsjakerobb@reddit
Nice. Yeah, theyāre mostly the same. I am not sure about some details like whether the T-Type got the same 8.5ā rear axle.
ThrowingNuts69@reddit
The only difference I know of is the t-type is a lighter than the grand national.
itsjakerobb@reddit
I've heard that too. I don't know how much weight difference there is, nor what causes it, but I don't imagine it's very much. I figure T-tops (available on both GN and T-Type) add more weight (compared to hardtop) than that.
ThrowingNuts69@reddit
I think itās a couple aluminum swaps over the steel on the gn, but if I had to guess itās a small non noticeable difference
Bearslovecheese@reddit
That line about not having had the salary you have now for very long brought me in. It feels so good. I'm in a similar boat almost 2 years ago I got the big promotion I had been waiting for. Still driving the Ford Fusion Hybrid I was puttering around in when I only made 60k. Trying to fend off the itch for something newer and nicer for another year but it's so hard! I can't wait to go back to sliding into an SUV instead of sitting down into a car.
itsjakerobb@reddit
Yeah, in 2019 I was making \~110k. I had worked at the same place for 14 years and had capped out. I left there and started working remote in late '19 -- timing couldn't have been better with COVID and all!
I'm a software engineer, so working remote means I can work for Silicon Valley companies, most of whom pay you like you're living in SV, whether you are or not. Jumped immediately to 150k -- a 36% increase. Moved around a couple times since then, and got promoted a couple times as well, including another raise that happened to be right at 36%. Today, I make significantly more than double that 2019 value.
Having worked remotely for almost six years now, I don't drive much. Sometimes only once a week. So it's hard to justify spending significant amounts of money on the fun new cars I really want.
> I can't wait to go back to sliding into an SUV instead of sitting down into a car.

Not me, but some friends and family.
Former software engineer. Wrote some programs that he sold for a huge sum and with ongoing license and support profits. His daily is an older Mercedes S-class. He also has a Honda Odyssey for the family and an old 911. And he was asking my opinion on a cheap Ferrari at one point. The guy is a multi millionaire and could afford multiple Ferraris.
Director at an AI company. Comfortably in the 300+ and wife is just over 100. Drives a newer Toyota Sienna for the family and wife drives an old Toyota Matrix.
Owner operator of a business. In the 500 range. The family vehicle is a newer Mercedes GLE and he bought his mom's maybe 5+ year old Volvo V90 when she was looking to get something newer. Uses the wagon for work.
Engineer in a rare specialty. Runs a sole proprietor consulting business. Makes 300-500 a year depending on how good business is. Has an old ass all stock Acura Vigor from his youth, an old ass heavily modified Subaru Legend sedan, a first gen Toyota FRS, the wife drives a Mitsubishi Outlander, and a Honda fit at the out of town city he does consulting for when he's on site.
Dual lawyer couple. Comfortably over 500 together. An old ass Honda Odyssey they got new but is now over a decade old and they bought one of their parents old Porsche Cayennes when the parent wanted a newer model.
Real estate, ~250 a year. Lexus ES and stay at home wife drives an RX.
Business consultant, 500+ a year. A 5-10 year old Audi A6 wagon. Higher trim level but not an S.
A CEO. ~350. ~5 year old Maserati Quattroporte.

Haha yes. Every 5 years someone gets a new car, and we drive our car for ten years each. Her a 4-runner, then me a Tacoma (although I got a GMC sierra this time because Tacoma was too small for me and a car seat behind me). I had to upgrade early this time because of kids, but I donāt mind holding out longer. If it wasnāt for the better gas mileage, new cars suck⦠too many electronics. I know, Iām getting old.

With every post like this, I inch closer to pulling the trigger on a ND2
ml8888msn@reddit
Small convertibles are the way to go. I have a 2019 CRV, 2022 GLS 450, 2014 911 4S, 2019 GT3 RS, 1988 testarossa, and a 2003 Honda s2000
Can you guess my favorite?
GT3 RS. Letās not kid ourselves. But I drive my s2000 the most when the weather is nice for a multitude of reasons. Being a ridiculous amount of fun is one of them. Small, light weight, with a good power to weight ratio thatās fully accessible on the road has so much appeal. I agonized between a Miata and the S2000 and went with the latter because of the investment value and the 9k redline. I do think the ND3 is a future classic. And the comforts over the S2000 are missed sometimes. But having a very analog vehicle that is often compared to a very modern alternative drew me in
Zdmins@reddit
If the whole stigma thing of a nd2 doesnāt bother you, then itās a no brainer.
Pretend-Rock8293@reddit
You have to be really insecure to care what strangers think of your car. On the other hand with friends, double down on the jokes. Tell them you can't give them a ride because the purse takes up the passenger seat area.Ā
alexithunders@reddit
Out of curiosity, to what stigma are you referring?
Zdmins@reddit
Some people feel itās a very effeminate car and make related jokes.
SPYfuncoupons@reddit
Do it, I just got an ND1, for $20k (low miles, all I could afford) but I love it so much. Driven 500 miles in a week because I find excuses to take it out. Watch videos every day on it
Jamesthrottlehouse@reddit
Hahahaha yesssss itās working
anonquestionsprot@reddit

B5_S4@reddit
I turo'd an ND1 and (though I didn't know it at the time) the Turo CEO's personal 997.1 Carrera S, manuals in both, back to back. The miata during the week, the 911 on the weekend. Drove the same roads, and yeah, the 911 was faster. But it was my first true p-car experience. I was pretty underwhelmed, it felt alright, light front end on throttle at corner exit, but it didn't blow me away. Then I flew home and got back in my daily and realized how much slower it was lol. At that moment I realized the miata had ruined the 911 for me, it felt maybe 10% slower than the 911, but was 10 years newer and still 1/3rd the cost. I can't imagine comparing an ND2 or ND3 to something like the Cayman. I'd definitely take 3 ND miatas over an older 911, and I'd probably take 2 NDs over a newer Cayman. Especially given how much road noise I had and how prone to understeer the 981 I drove was.
SteviaCannonball9117@reddit
Thank you for further validating my purchase of a brand new (6MT) ND3 rather than a used 997/991. I can totally admit that I don't have "new Porsche" money laying around.

What mileage is your Volvo, and how reliable has it been? I am looking at a 2019 with 125k on it at the moment.
Meh-_-_-@reddit
I am at about 70k. I'm glad I had a 5 year warranty and 8 years on hybrid components. I'll put it that way.
However, since the comprehensive warranty expired a couple years ago I have had zero issues. Nothing. All replacement components had superseding part numbers, so hopefully everything that will break anytime soon already has.
Routine-Ad-1812@reddit
Iāve got a 2016 v60 T6 with 120k⦠donāt do it. I absolutely love the car, but in my experience once stuff starts going wrong it starts going very wrong. Since 80k Iāve had to replace strut mounts and bearings, water pump, oil return line on the turbo, ignition coils twice, front wheel bearings, and I still have to replace the cats (standard maintenance for 100k+ but still $1400 on a car worth like $8k now) and Iām sure Iām forgetting a few things
Meh-_-_-@reddit
That's unfortunate, I have a 2011 S60 T6 with 90k and have had minimal problems. Outside of normal maintenance, struts, something to do with the oil breathing valve or something (can't remember the name, not a car guy to that extent), and engine fan. Soon I need to do a 100k which includes the drive belt and water pump and more comprehensive maintenance, like various fluid flushes and what not.

2011 Lexus is250 or 2024 Lexus is500 depending on mood
yodogyodog@reddit
Is the is500 a lot better than the is250? I know they are generations apart but I also know the cars dimensions are more similar than different. Is there anything about the is250 you like better than the is500?
pixel_loupe@reddit
The is500 is a much better in performance obviously and overall much more comfortable especially the seats, interior and suspension. Interior feels bigger. The front seats are way more comfortable and can be adjusted a lot lower, and they added something like 4 inches more legroom in the rear. overall the new car feels a few inches longer & wider. Interior feels equally solid on both cars. The 360 camera is really useful too.
But there are so many places where they cut costs on the new car! For example, plastic interior door handles instead of metal. Headliner is cheaper. No ambient lighting in the footwell (the is250 had really nice subtle white LEDs at night). The windows donāt roll up gently towards the top anymore, they just go full speed and slam closed. The music volume doesnāt adjust louder/softer anymore when the windows are down. No puddle lights in the mirrors. No passenger lumbar adjustment. Lots of expensive little mechanisms in the interior are gone, like the door pockets donāt expand/tilt anymore, the armrest doesnāt slide, the sunglasses holder is gone, the little soft closing covers for the cup holder/coin tray is gone. The grab handles on the roof has one pivot now when it used to have two. I really loved all these little luxury touches the IS250 have. And the older infotainment system is faster to operate
yodogyodog@reddit
Great observations and points. Thank you for sharing. Howās the handling between the two? Do you feel the extra weight of the v8 in the is500 versus the lighter v6 in the is250? Hows the stability between the two vehicles if driving 80-90+mph?
HenryKerhin@reddit
are they both rwd? if so then whatās the point
pixel_loupe@reddit
Yes, both RWD, in California it never snows so I consider awd a downside. Itās useful to have a beater car since thereās lots of homeless people here. The 500 is modified, kinda loud/flashy and the 250 is just regular traffic
And itās always interesting to notice the differences every time I switch between the two cars. keeps me from getting used to a nice car and becoming bored off it
TheWhogg@reddit
Shocks me that a 2011 Lexus is considered a beater. In my head it sounds like a near new luxury car.

I'm not in my 30's anymore, but here's my current list
Ford Lightning Mitsubishi Evo x Solstice gxp Fiat 500e Jeep Grand Cherokee
There's a few more, like an old Thunderbird and a 50's GMC truck, but they are in storage, maybe someday.
Technically the fiat was my wife's, now my daughter's, but it's kind of a blast to drive in the city
The Evo is amazing on a track, boring on public roads. To have any fun in the corners, you have to be going way too fast. Stop and go traffic and that clutch will keep you from skipping leg day at the gym.
The solstice is just plain fun. I've heard the na version is a dog, but the turbo brings it to life. Not the best suspension, but good enough to let the rear end hang out in the corners and still feel stable, and the whistle of the blowoff valve while driving through a canyon with the top down is unforgettable.
The jeep, meh, probably another recall on it again this week
The f150 lightning, most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned. Crazy fast off the line, even with a trailer on the back. Get it on a twisty gravel mountain road though and you start to feel the weight, where it keeps it planted under acceleration making it easy to go into a corner hot. Nothing unpredictable, it just has that feeling like if you try to drift it more than 10 degrees, it's going to do what physics tells it to do. On pavement the weight keeps it planted though.
Maybe I'm different from most, but I never went for the exotics. I did go for 11 years buying at least one car/truck/motorcycle/ATV a year though. I think the only thing that broke that streak was running out of room to park them.
One last thought, I think I spend more on tires than insurance.
yodogyodog@reddit
Funny you mention the jeep and recall thing. What recall notice did you get that was most recent? I have a jeep cherokee trailhawk and got notified to not park my car indoors or in my garage because it could self immolate and burn my house down. I havenāt gotten the recall fix done because I went once and they tell me they got to order parts and itāll take a few days so I never went back to do it because the jeep dealerships are becoming few and far inbetween. Also my car just wonāt ever shift into 4low anymore, kind of wack lol
TrilliumHill@reddit
Self immolate?! As in spontaneous combustion?! Damn
Honestly, I don't even pay attention to them anymore. When we first bought it a recall came out within maybe 3 months, took over a year for parts to be available. I get letters about recalls and don't even open them anymore. We don't drive it much, I take it in maybe twice a year for service, and schedule it in advance so they can order whatever is available. Usually there's at least one recall they can't get parts for.
As much as I like Jeeps, at this point, the only one I will ever buy would be an old cj or Willy's.

If you're a big gear head you may prioritize a car well before 250k.
If I was single and made it 250k, I'd have a BMW M3 and a 1/2 Ton truck. Probably buy the truck first and buy the M3 in a few years. Truck for the bad weather days or if I needed to move shit around. M3 as an awesome daily.

In my mid '40s and make a hair over 250. I drive a 2016 3.5 naturally aspirated F-150. My wife decided to downsize last year. I really wanted to keep the vehicle for another year or two because it was paid off but she wanted something newer and smaller. She went from an older model expedition to a 2024 Nissan Pathfinder.
We got a fully loaded Platinum edition for low 40s. The interest rate was it higher than I wanted but we were able to put a little bit over 20K down. We got the 120,000 mi warranty and over the last 9 months she's put just under 4K miles on it. The goal is to keep it at least 10 to 12 years. At that point she will most likely downsize again.
My 2016 F-150 has just over 50,000 mi. Every year I get it in the air and take care of any rust on the bottom and spray the underside. Hoping to get another 10 to 15 years out of it.

Been looking at some project car options. My logic brain tells me to just get a slightly used M3 and be done with it. Illogical car guy brain tells me to get a shit box e46, spend 7 years fixing it in my big ass garage I mention above and then buy an M3.

Isnāt the Freestar/Windstar ridiculously unreliable?
fakeryz@reddit
Well we had a honda but my mom hated it so we went back to a freestar. We usually get about 250k before the tranny starts slipping or some other issue then we buy another one as they are cheap. We have had 2 or 3 i think
rulesrmeant2bebroken@reddit
Hondas do require a lot of upkeep to keep them reliable, especially the older ones, been across that bridge before. I can see how the transmissions for the Ford vans would be ridiculously cheap, nobody wants to drive one anymore since they fall apart in every other way, especially nowaday.
fakeryz@reddit
We dont change the transmissions we just buy another van with low k. Plus the fordfree star is actually pretty good reliablity wise

Just lately, I've been through three cars in three months. Unfortunately, I wasn't in my right mind due to multiple personal, professional, and medical issues, when I sold the Porsche, but:
2023 Porsche Panamera Turbo S e-hybrid Sport Turismo 2025 Cadillac CT5V Blackwing 2025 BMW M5
Before the Panamera, was another Blackwing, and prior to that, multiple Mustangs of various years.
The principal stable that hasn't changed in years is my 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor, and my wife's 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S e-hybrid. I'll forever lament the loss of the Panamera, but there's another one on the horizon. The BMW is nice, but there's a reason that they're $100k less expensive.

Any_Honeydew9812@reddit
every once in a while i try to imagine how his investments have matured over the years.. but i try not to think about it too much aha. none of my business.
he held a deans position at the university in our town. got his tenure, hung around.. worked hard, spoke up a lot. he eventually became quite the thorn in his boss's side lol. but it was always for the right reasons! it has been a pleasure growing up with him.. well known and liked in the community, he enjoyed his work and even in retirement he's engaged with our town and the university. He goes out lobster fishing as a deck hand on one of his friend's boats every spring.. he said he was gonna give it up last spring, that didnt happen.. same thing this year.. until his friend arrived on the door step practially begging dad to go out on the boat with him haha. He's 62 and not slowing down at all.. tho my mother wishes he would. Cant teach an old dog new tricks!
he always drove pretty low key cars, kept a couple motor cycles too. Im currently in the process of putting new frame rails in his Tacoma because he does not want to let it go.. but im also trying to push him to get another Subaru and retire his Tacoma from daily driver to just a parts runner/work truck.

The areas where a single wage earner pulls down $250-350k arenāt usually condusive to car culture. In the age range you are discussing, 350k is like 0.1% of the population or less. Big law, surgeons etc. and probably in Manhattan, San Francisco etc.
Realistically, this is a very high household income for middle aged adults in those same fields.
ā
The toniest suburbs in the country dont even have an average household income that qualifies for the low end of this range.
Travel to these tony suburbs and you will find multiple cars leased or financed. You will definitely be delighted to discover your taxpayer dollars have subsidized a 2nd or 3rd car that is an EV for half of Lake Forest and Highland Park, Illinois.
This allows homeowners to enjoy new tech and charging at home with a subsidized solar panel array (in fairness the panels are justifiable as policy and less of a handout).
juggled lease terms allows for a payment lower than a 3 year old Sentra
ā
The obvious answer is a BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche or Lexus- with a taxpayer funded EV to whet their appetitie for a future purchase. The young wealthy I see are generally driving nicer versions of the German brands. Corvette appears to be french for āGreen hat of the cuckold.ā
Ironically, the average pickup price isnt all that much lower. A stupid Grand Wagonner is 120k! These leased German cars depreciate like crazy and you can get a 3 year old suburban X5 for the same as some lame Palisade or pathetic Atlas.
The trope that the most millionaires drive a pickup is a fiction- it may seem that way based on their price though (76k new on a average).
there is a subset of extremely wealthy farmers and ranchers- who also get to write off their 100k truck- these are few in number.
The wealth of the US is concentrated on the coasts and enclaves like Chicago, Dallas or Phoenix. But even these last three donāt have many enterprises to sustain a 350k income for a 25 yeat old.
In the wealthy cities, a rich guy of gal driving a fancy truck for show (not for work or in a working class area) is basically wearing a dunce cap.
-
Everything automotive related is extremely regressive. The serfs only got cars to faciliate suburban spread without investment in infrastructure. Teslaās value is predicated on a vision where the poor have their car ownership ended and they pay a subscription to ride in an autonomous EV taxi. Which is great because no one has to be paid to drive either.
-
Im in 40s and partner is in 30s. We are in this range. We have an old CRV, my new Civic hybrid (only purchased becausd a moron hit my 09 Civic DXVP) and a 2011 Elantra.

2013 Toyota Prius thatās lasted me this entire time with 0 mechanical issues just changing oil, tires, pads etc. Bought it when I was in college, Iām 30 now. Itās my beater car/beach car now. Door ding me, fuck if I care car.
My wifeās car was a paid off Kia optima that got totaled and then we bought a 2024 Mazda CX5 carbon edition w the payout. Itās pretty nice for the price we paid like $34,000 when it was new. Other beater car donāt have to worry about.
2023 Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce last year cost me $32k with 10k miles. Wanted a fun sporty car for once as a treat for all my hard work over the last decade but I refuse to pay more than $30k for a car. Complete opposite treatment, Iām distraught when a single dust particle lands on the car and have an internal meltdown when choosing a parking spot where I wonāt get door dinged. I would completely crash out if I owned anything more expensive and something happened. Not that I couldnāt pay to get it fixed but I HATE having to derail my schedule for dumb shit like scheduling a repair appointment and waiting around. I have 0 time to fit this in a regular work week.
I see people driving new BMW X5s and M4s and theyāre just loaded up with debt and anxiety. They trade them in for a new one every couple years and lose thousands of dollars. Wonder why they never have any money left over or get divorced over money issues and sell everything bc they canāt keep up with the lifestyle. Nobody cares what car you drive. If you like cars you buy the car for yourself to enjoy not for what other people will think of you. As I get older and make more $, the less financial burden I want to take on. I just want everything paid off and to breathe a sigh of relief and not worry. I feel like even $250-350k is still not enough to be buying $100k+ cars.
ICantDecideIt@reddit
Totally agree with the sentiment. I frequently see coworkers driving new Germans and wonder how they justify paying for it. I also would add 250k income is very different depending on where you live.

In my working years finally making 6 figures I drove a ford explorer. Then later in my working life I drove a XType Jaguar, then an XF Jag and finally a Jag XJ. When I retired and had my retirement plan in place I took my final bonus and bought BTC. A year later added a pool, renovated my house and drove a Mercedes Benz S550. My house is paid off, no debt, and make 6 figures just on dividends and social security covers all my bills. Looking at axLucid Saphire for me and a Cadillac Optiq for the lady.
