What is your favorite US license plate design?

I’m a sucker for Virginia one with the SR-71

I’m a sucker for Virginia one with the SR-71
FoxConsistent4406@reddit
Not sure it'su favorite, but it definitely.stsmds out: Tennessee
OldSlug@reddit
First place: The California Council for the Arts plate designed by Wayne Thiebaud
Second place: The classic 80s California plate, as seen on LA Law.
PlatinumElement@reddit
I wish they’d bring back that 80’s art deco sunset plate
OldSlug@reddit
It was so great.
DESR95@reddit
Looking at standard plates, some that I like include:
They all have their own reasons why I like them! New Hampshire's "LIVE FREE OR DIE" slogan, the color scheme and indigenous representation for New Mexico, the scenery for Arizona, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Utah, the distinct green plate of Vermont, the clean ocean theme for Rhode Island, the lovely rainbow on Hawaii, and the classic, simple look of the California plate :)
PlatinumElement@reddit
California was so much better before it had CA.DMV.GOV on the bottom
mcenroefan@reddit
As someone who grew up in NH, and with an ancestor who fought with Gen. Stark at the battle of Bennington, do you know the rest of the quote? It’s “Live Free or Die, death is not the worst of evils.” John Stark was an amazing man. He was as brave as the day is long. I fangirl over that dude.
rgg40@reddit
Check out Hayes Carll’s song “Live Free or Die”.
Much-Sock2529@reddit
Vermont I like the retro green
viognierette@reddit
It just looks like it was made to be on the back of a navy blue Jeep Wagoneer Woody.
viognierette@reddit
Just saw a Mississippi one on a roadtrip that I think is new - a beautiful magnolia in the center.
Initial-Cat-2805@reddit
Wyoming!
SgtHulkasBigToeJam@reddit
New Mexico is a standout
Initial-Cat-2805@reddit
New Mexico's best one is the black plate. Top tier!
Emergency_Drawing_49@reddit
My first thought also.
Nice-Log2764@reddit
New Mexico is underrated in literally every aspect. Underrated flag, underrated state to visit, and underrated license plate. I love the new ones with the little chili peppers 😆
Bitter_Face8790@reddit
I lived there for 12 years. Definitely not underrated.
Roughneck16@reddit
What part of NM? If you were stationed at Cannon AFB, I wouldn’t blame you.
Bitter_Face8790@reddit
I was in the east mountains, Tijeras and Sandia Park. Santa Fe is cool, rest of the state, not so much.
j_ly@reddit
Poverty and the worst public education in the country. But yeah, there's some cool looking nature and the Breaking Bad house.
505backup_1@reddit
I've lived here my whole life. Incredibly underrated if you actually get out and do stuff
TheTrooperKC@reddit
Total sleeper state. I took a lot of road trips with my grandparents and NM had some of the most beautiful parks and views.
Roughneck16@reddit
I’ve been to all 50 and NM is my fave which is why we moved back here in 2019.
Few-Might2630@reddit
Beautiful state, but too hot and methy.
ifallallthetime@reddit
I came here to say this.
All 3 main New Mexico designs are awesome, the yellow one, the turquoise one, and the one with the chili peppers
Pleasant_Studio9690@reddit
Agreed! I’m in California, land of the boring plates (except the Snoopy museums plate) and I love seeing any New Mexico plate. Also, I know they’re plain, but I’ve always thought Vermont’s bright green ones are cool. And back when I lived in PA I had the original PA River Otter resource conservation plate and thought it was pretty damn cool.
jeffbell@reddit
Vermont has fewer cars and needs fewer letters on the plates.
Sauntering_Rambler@reddit
This makes me happy NM is rated top tier. I agree. As someone born & raised in AZ with family in NM I spend a lot of time there. One of the best states in the country hands down. Super underrated. The emblem the state uses is actually from the Zia people. It’s representing the sun as a sacred symbol. As much as I love my AZ plates I kinda wish I registered my car in NM haha.
Physical-Incident553@reddit
Michigan one with Mackinac Bridge

Crazynoob159Shutdown@reddit

orangeunrhymed@reddit
Montana has a huge variety of plates. Mine have a T. rex skull on them
SuccessfulPath9008@reddit
The number of Montana designs is absurd.
Serrated_Banana@reddit
I liked the old Texas one with the cowboy on a horse looking up at the stars.
AwwFiddlestuck@reddit
Washington DC‘s only because when you do see it, it’s an "ohh hell hey look, they’re from the capital! Neat.“.
Nicktune1219@reddit
To me, a DC license plate means they are going to clog traffic and do something erratic because it’s their first time driving in 2 months. I’m from Maryland if that tells you anything.
AwwFiddlestuck@reddit
Lmfao!!! I needed this!
Old_Distribution_235@reddit
Bonus points for the "Taxation Without Representation" motto (or the version they go with now: "End Taxation Without Representation").
nrcx@reddit
The old version was ironic and witty, the new version is whiny and dumb.
https://tropedia.fandom.com/wiki/They_Changed_It,_Now_It_Sucks
fleetpqw24@reddit
The irony is that they literally cannot become a state unless a constitutional amendment is written, and there isn’t a snowball’s chance in South Texas that 3/4 of the States will support that.
nrcx@reddit
No, that's what makes it whiny and dumb. Puerto Rico yes, why not? But DC no way, it was explicitly created not to be a state, but a special territory governed by Congress and everyone knows that, so it's ridiculous to even advocate for it.
fleetpqw24@reddit
You’re not wrong, but there’s a nuance to it that you’re missing too. The Constitutional Amendment would be written to make the capitol district basically just the White House, the Capitol Buildings, and the Supreme Court, basically the size of the National Mall, and everything else around it would become the city of Washington, Douglas Commonwealth, or something like that. (The name comes from the DC statehood movement.) A bill to make DC a state passed in the House in ‘21, but never passed in the Senate, likely due to the question of Constitutionality. Conversely, the land that Maryland and Virginia ceded to DC could be ceded back to each state, and the residents in those portions would either become Marylanders or Virginians. But, DC will never, and can never become a state unless the Constitution is amended.
nrcx@reddit
Oh I get it, but really, there isn't much point. DC is so small that most of the people who "live in DC" live in Maryland anyway, it's just up the street. The only part of DC that's in DC itself is the incredibly expensive part, and anyone who lives there is wealthy enough that they don't really have to.
kc_chiefs_@reddit
Kansas just made a new one with the Kansas silhouette. Background is a Kansas prairie. It's quite pleasant.
Nicktune1219@reddit
A new license plate that absolutely sucks is Pennsylvania. They made a campaign to change all of the state welcome signs to that design too. There was nothing wrong with the old design, but they had to make a silly slogan with the liberty bell behind it.
Historical_Low4458@reddit
The one you're describing sounds like the Personalized Plate standard issue one.
Kansas got a new standard one. It has the state outline on it, but it features the Indian statue from the top of the Capital building and has a part of the state motto on the bottom.
I don't hate them, but I think I might just hang on to my old standard plate with the state seal on it until they make me switch. I honestly probably wouldn't have cared if they just kept the old 123 ABC format.
kc_chiefs_@reddit
I did mean the normal standardized one, but forgot it was basically a Kansas sunset, not the plains. I do wish they kept the 6 digit, but understand why they went to 7.
chibialoha@reddit
Big fan of the Maryland Chesapeake plates with the crab and heron.
Nicktune1219@reddit
The really old one from the early 2000s was great. Unfortunately those plates held up terribly. By 2010 many of those plates were in really bad condition. Today, if I see one of those plates, most of the paint is chipped or faded to where you can’t read it. The one they introduced around 2010 with “treasure the Chesapeake” was ok, which is the one you’re talking about, my mom had it on her car. The new one does look pretty cool, I much prefer it to the standard issue plate, but there is a yearly fee for it since it’s a conservation fund thing.
benck202@reddit
I may be biased because my first car had them, but the 90s Chesapeake ones were even better. Absolute chefs kiss.
No-Environment6103@reddit
Utah
Imateepeeimawigwam@reddit
I just got the Utah black license plate. It's pretty cool looking.
racedownhill@reddit
I have one as well, but every state seems to have a black plate option nowadays.
Nicktune1219@reddit
Less than 10 states have them.
zenFyre1@reddit
The dude who designs Utah’s plates deserves a raise. The black plate is class, and the Arches plate with ‘Life Elevated’ is stylish AF.
Appalachian_Aioli@reddit
That Arches plate is choice
abagofit@reddit
I'm kinda mad I went with the skier plate. I moved here for skiing, so it makes sense, but the arches plate looks so much better!
Electrical-Ad1288@reddit
Same!
Kseries2497@reddit
Michigan recently reintroduced their classic style plates, navy blue with stamped yellow lettering. Looks fantastic.
Colorado lets you order retro plates, white letters on green mountains, which looks cool but they're printed, not stamped.
And then of course California's gold on black plates are iconic.
koreanforrabbit@reddit
I got the classic style Michigan plate that says "Water - Winter Wonderland". It's fresh as hell.
Nicktune1219@reddit
They just introduced a green and white one which says water wonderland. Looks pretty cool. But I guess you have to choose between UM or MSU.
evil_b_atman@reddit
While I don't like that they are themed after a schools colors the blue and yellow plate is so fucking sexy
Kseries2497@reddit
Well, two things. First, that color scheme was first used on Michigan plates in the 1930s and the new plates are specifically intended to be a throwback to plates from the 1960s. Second, U of M predates Michigan itself, so it's not really surprising that the school's colors would be associated with the state.
ThinkUrSoGuyBigTough@reddit
always liked Washington. simple but bold
Fillmore_the_Puppy@reddit
I think it's the nicest standard-issue plate. That said, I pay extra for the orca one.
soil_nerd@reddit
I think they could have done something better with the font. Red block arial that’s offset to the left is uninspiring.
nonstopflux@reddit
I hope they bring back the old font some day.
I really like that it uses Mt. Rainier as opposed to other landmarks. Almost everyone in the state has a relationship with the mountain.
Inkling_13@reddit
yall go look up the newer alaska plates. I’ve been to every single state and have an obsession with license plates and lemme tell you the purple one and the blue ones are absolutely gorgeous. Genuine masterpieces. If they were paintings I’d hang them in my home. I have never seen such beautiful license plates before!
crottesdenez@reddit
Colorado and New Mexico are 1 and 2.
angrysquirrel777@reddit
Colorado changed to basic black plates now and I'm going to try to never switch
Chicken_Wing@reddit
The mountain embossed plates are the standard. The black plates cost extra.
angrysquirrel777@reddit
Really? I'm surprised to see so many and all new if they are an extra option. Is it just new this last year or two?
Captain_Jmon@reddit
I’m convinced it’s people who think the straight black is classier lol
Chicken_Wing@reddit
Yeah, it's pretty new. I would riot if the black plates were standard. I was upset when they inversed the colors on the sky and mountains.
Particular_Bet_5466@reddit
You can tell who has an old school vehicle if they still have those inverted color plates. It’s been 25 years!
The_dots_eat_packman@reddit
You can also get the old style as a special plate (I did) but the actual old ones have embossed numbers.
Particular_Bet_5466@reddit
I didn’t know this. However I did read that they were getting rid of embossing our regular plates a few years ago for the toll readers, and I even saw some at the time, however I just got a new car and so did a buddy and they are embossed. Glad we at least still have that.
Foxy_locksy1704@reddit
I was so sad when I got my first inverted color plate. I thought the old ones were pretty unique and represented Colorado with all the green and the mountains.
angrysquirrel777@reddit
I feel the exact same way. Thanks for letting me know! You have no idea how good it feels to know that the black plates aren't standard.
kelariy@reddit
I first saw them in 2020 or 2021 I think.
Particular_Bet_5466@reddit
Yeah I don’t get why people go for the pure black plates when our regular ones are so cool. I also thought they go rid of embossing the plates to just printed, (the color was wearing off so toll sensors can’t see it), but I just got a new plate a few weeks ago and it was embossed.
Sea-Noise-7438@reddit
Colorado mountain plate
climbstuff32@reddit
Always loved Vermont. Simple, classy.
Ms-Metal@reddit
Another vote for New Mexico. Love the turquoise one, but the chili pepper one is nice too. I also like colorado, with the outline of the mountains.

Hawaii! :)
Chambanasfinest@reddit
Love the rainbow. So iconic!
StarWars_Girl_@reddit
Yes, I came here to say Hawaii! If I see Hawaii tags in other states, I assume military and understand why they have those tags, lol.
Maryland's standard issue plates are fine, but nothing special. The Chesapeake Bay series ones on the other hand...I'm not inclined to pay extra for it (I probably would have if they had been issuing plates with the US flag instead of the MD flag when I got my car) but they are SOOOO pretty. https://mva.maryland.gov/vehicles/Pages/licenseplates/bay-agricultural.aspx
JaunxPatrol@reddit
It's 25 bucks extra for the save the bay tags, but the $ goes to the Chesapeake Bay Trust!
Trees_are_cool_@reddit
New Mexico
RoseRedd@reddit
I think the standard Oregon plate with the tree is pretty nifty.
lesbyeen@reddit
It’s a really nice default plate! I always loved the whale one myself
Altoid24@reddit
For me it's Hawaii
thecat627@reddit
The current Florida and Georgia Army Veteran (saw one on my Uncle’s truck) are pretty cool.
This one is not US, but I also dig the Ontario license plate too.
sail4sea@reddit
I live in Iowa. Our regular plate is terrible. However we can pay $10 more for a black plate with white numbers. Other states are copying this so soon every state will have black license plates. I love having blackout plates. We also can get Hawkeye or Cyclone plates depending on which university we went to, but those are an additional $50.
aunttiffany@reddit
Gotta be the Tennessee Jazz Cat.
wifespissed@reddit
Washington. It's got Mt. Ranier on it. A very pretty volcano. I wonder if they'll update the plates when it explodes?
NorCalBodyPaint@reddit
Montana has one that my friend designed to benefit a local charity that helps educate kids by working with horses. I think it’s gorgeous.

The old blue and gold NY plates.
Realtrain@reddit
I much preferred the design right before that which had the NYC skyline, Upstate Mountains, and Niagara Falls along the top in blue.
fleetpqw24@reddit
The updated version of that one isn’t horrible. I have it on my car and I prefer them over the blue and gold ones
SkittleCar1@reddit
I still have those on one of my cars. Holding out as long as possible.

California’s black one or Tennessee’s dark purple one. And the little black one from Delaware

fleetpqw24@reddit
I miss those Statue of Liberty ones. My parents had a set when we moved to Texas.
SemperFudge123@reddit
For the standard plates, New Mexico is my favorite, followed closely by Vermont.
There are so many special and commemorative plates out there it’s hard to keep them all straight. They’re not particularly good looking, but as a Michigan resident and Michigan alum, I like how NC has a University of Michigan license plate.

We have about 100 or more different options in Florida. You might like the Blue angels one, it’s pretty cool looking.
I like the New Mexico plates. The teal one is probably my favorite.
Quicherbichen1@reddit
It's turquoise not teal. Don't let a New Mexican hear you call it teal. I live in NM, but I'm not from NM, so it's no big deal to me, but man do they get all uppity about it. (I like the turquoise ones too.)
Help1Ted@reddit
Shit! I looked it up and it’s just turquoise and not teal. I guess I noticed a faded one near a newer one and thought they had both shades.
Maleficent-Hawk-318@reddit
Honestly, teal and turquoise are so close that many people use them interchangeably. That's part of the issue; in NM it's pretty much always going to be turquoise because the actual turquoise stone and the color derived from it is really important culturally. But turquoise stones vary a lot in color too, so there's a range.
Just, if it's in or from NM and in that color range, probably call it turquoise. ;)
Help1Ted@reddit
Yeah, they really are so similar. I thought I’ve seen more with a more blue leaning color just thinking it was teal and not turquoise. Seeing both almost next to each other I just thought they had both. I’ve definitely seen their black one though and thought it looked really nice.
Help1Ted@reddit
Wait, don’t they have both though? I thought I’ve seen a darker and lighter version.
TheTrooperKC@reddit
Definitely a vote for New Mexico here. I see a surprising number in Kansas City. Also NM is a damn gorgeous state!
wolfej4@reddit
Blue Angels is my personal favorite out of Florida.
I just wish we had a straight black one that wasn’t “Don’t tread on me”
Help1Ted@reddit
Our regular state plates are about due for an update. It would be really nice to have a black one. Instead of just the options to either get the county, in god we trust or my Florida. Just have the option to get a black, white and maybe another color. Even if they kept the same design on a black plate it would really stand out.
imyourhostlanceboyle@reddit

They revamped the old standard issue license plate and now it has a bit of our awesome state flag on the bottom. I just hate the font that they use for "Maryland." Virginia has hundreds of specialty plates for service organizations, special causes, historical themes, colleges and universities, cities and towns even.

New Mexico. Northwest Territories (with the polar bear shape). Oregon has some good special issue plates. Montana has some cool ones as well.
On the flip side, California and Texas really need to up their game on their standard issue plates. They are the most boring of the bunch.
pax_omnibus1@reddit
Iowa black and white version. California black and yellow retro style. I like the simplicity of them.

Traditional_Entry183@reddit
Unfortunately, most of the states surrounding me have gone with very plain, basic designs in recent years. Don't really understand it. When i was growing up in the 80s and 90s, it seemed like the states were in an art competition to have to coolest one. The one my home state of WV had back then with the yellow image of the state behind blue letters and numbers was very solid.
