Where are people finding their therapists?

Sorry for maybe a weird question, but how are people searching and finding the therapists they are using? Are you typing in therapists in my area on a search engine? And once you have one, how do you know that they are right for you?
Im in dire need of someone to talk to to help me process some health and personal stuff , but im not at the level of Samaritans.
I don’t know where to start.
Thank you.

If you want to find an online therapist in the UK there is a specific directory called Counsellingo.com
All of the therapists' professional memberships are verified, and their availability is checked on a weekly basis so you don't waste your time contacting ones that are not available.
It's normal to get in touch with two or three that you like the look of, and have an initial consultation with each of them to see how you might feel working with them. Initial consultations are sometimes free of charge, or lower cost, and their profiles will mention this.

Typically you'd use psychology today or counseling directory, and there you can find the right therapist for you!
I found my therapist psychology today https://www.bridgetbarnestherapy.com/ and her team really helped me!
Ultimately you gotta find someone you click with, as that's the most important thing - best of luck!

Try Counselling Directory: https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/. We are a UK‑based platform established in 2005, designed to help you find the right counsellor.
Every professional on our site is individually verified by our in‑house team, so you know you’re connecting with someone qualified and trustworthy. Therapists write their own profiles, giving you a clear sense of their approach, experience, and specialisms before you get in touch. Many also offer introductory calls, so you can chat first and see if they’re the right fit for you before committing to sessions.
We hope this helps

Others have mentioned some good directories to have a look through.
As to knowing whether or not they're right for you, set some intro calls up with a few who stand out to you (maybe you like their photo, maybe you like the sound of their profile, there's no wrong answer), and then see if any of them feel like someone you'd be at ease talking with.
Most of the benefit of therapy is shown to come from the strength of the relationship itself - i.e. if you don't feel comfortable and able to be yourself with a therapist, you won't make the same progress as with someone you click with.
Unless you have enough experience to know which modality is going to be what you need, it's all a matter of trying and seeing at first.
Good luck!

Psychology today has a search and listings feature. You can search for therapists near you, and specify various things. We have used that when needed.

I was given one by Mindline, he was specifically a therapist who also had physical and mental health issues.
It was free, but it was only an hour a fortnight, for 6 months,
But he was brilliant, and really helped me approach my problems from a different perspective (he also had a very cute dog, who he showed me pictures of, as my younger can has main character syndrome, and demands to be on camera for all video calls).
Could not recommend them highly enough

Have a search through the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy website. They are the professional body that covers therapists.

The BACP is one of the professional membership organisations. There are others such as the NCPS & UKCP.

My therapist is ChatGPT. Works for me.

Go through Bupa directory. You know they are verified then.

Try the British Association of Counsellors and Therapists (BACP) website. It has a page to search for a local therapist.
Pychobabulous@reddit
https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk is a good place to start. All therapists are registered with either they BACP, NCPS or equivalent membership body. You can search by area and by what you are seeking help with. The majority of therapists offer a free initial consultation.

Yeah I just typed in therapists in my area and I think I ended up browsing a site called therapist directory or something similar. They will usually have a bit about them as well as the type of issues they specialise in so that should break it down for you.
I’ve only done it once so I’m not sure if it always works like this, but once I enquired I was offered a free half hour ish call with them just to chat through what was going on, which gives you a better idea of if they are a good fit.

Google. It took a while to find the right one though.
leninzen@reddit
Yeah Google. A lot of therapists have free 10-15 min phone consultations to see if they're a good fit for your needs
