Dallas mayor calls for New Yorkers to move to Texas post Mamdani-win
Posted by Arrmadillo@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 192 comments
GOP-turned-Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson extended a warm welcome to Texas for any New York City resident or business "concerned" by state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani's recent win in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary.
JD_5643@reddit
He wants tax dodgers to move here? We have enough of them
AlotEnemiesNoFriends@reddit
That’s me!!! Remote work #1
JD_5643@reddit
I see how you got your username. I do appreciate your honesty though
AlotEnemiesNoFriends@reddit
Why else would someone leave nyc for Dallas though? Nothing is better in Dallas besides cost of living, taxes and overall economic opportunity.
Every city should have a value prop and for better or worse Dallas value prop is based upon what I listed above.
Also we aren’t tax dodgers we are just smart. We realize property values are lower here and while property tax rates are higher, property taxes don’t scale linearly with income like income taxes do.
What I realize in Dallas is….locals don’t understand that linear / non-linear relationship.
I bought a 3500sqf house in the middle of the city for 1.1M + 100k in Renovations. Try that in nyc not to mention my income went up by mid 5 figures just for moving here. Overall quality of life here is insane.
JD_5643@reddit
I hear ya! By avoiding taxes in your home state I’d argue you are tax dodging, but let’s say semantics. Your smart decision (though incentivized by our corrupt politicians) actively makes affording to live in my home state and home town harder. I wouldn’t blame you or anyone from NY / CA for moving here for saving money. I will always blame our politicians, and I will not be happy that you lot are here. I hope you enjoy our music, BBQ, corrupted institutions, and road rage. No hate!
AlotEnemiesNoFriends@reddit
To be fair, NY is not my home state. I go where the money is...I think I am on state #8.
BBQ is great, I don't do politics and I love how people drive here, except those that sit at the green light for 10 minutes because they are on their phone.
tmanarl@reddit
I’d welcome more democrats to move to Texas.
Intelligent_Gur_5253@reddit
They’re already here. They just can’t be bothered to vote. The big difference between GOP and Dems is that those registered voters who won’t vote are more likely to vote Dem.
mcmaster-99@reddit

mcmaster-99@reddit

bbeeeess@reddit

Feisty_Bee9175@reddit
New Yorkers would not like Texas. LOL
AlotEnemiesNoFriends@reddit
Bullshit. Moved here from NYC and Dallas is 100c better
Feisty_Bee9175@reddit
I am married to a New Yorker. He agrees with you. I am a home grown Texan. But we have noticed some New Yorkers (friends and family) who miss New York and dont like Texas at all. So I should have clarified my comment to those I know who are from New York.
Bosfordjd@reddit
Except Dallas is hot fucking garbage compared to almost any place in NY and definitely NYC lol.
AlotEnemiesNoFriends@reddit
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 hillbilly comment
d3dmnky@reddit
If there’s one thing I know about New Yorkers, it’s that they generally have zero fucking interest in moving to Dallas.
AlotEnemiesNoFriends@reddit
Wrong
photog_prince@reddit
Eric Johnson is a slimy hack.
GreedyLack@reddit
Then why did all of you vote for him?
mynamejulian@reddit
The state Democratic Party is run by hacks purposefully failing and installing corrupt where they can
Intelligent_Gur_5253@reddit
Dallas County is a democratic stronghold. Unless you lie, as he did. What the hell is he talking about?
flaming_bob@reddit
Yeah, a lot of people don't know how much money you can pull by being the controlled opposition in a gerrymandered area. It's a lot.
d3dmnky@reddit
I need to get into this
goatware@reddit
The leadership at the state level just changed this spring after having the same chair for 12 years. You don’t have to take my word for it.
Defiant-Specialist-1@reddit
He’s a Republican now right? Or independent?
mynamejulian@reddit
Yep. Masks off. DNC dgaf. West Virginia did the same thing with thr governor in even a more obvious way
photog_prince@reddit
He was always a Republican.
MyDentistIsACat@reddit
I know the mayor of Dallas doesn’t really have any sort of real power, but Eric is so blah at his job that when I first read the headline I drew a complete blank at who the mayor is.
Wutalesyou@reddit
Cheap tipper too
23mou-sapnu-puas@reddit
Aren’t they all?
TheCrimsonMustache@reddit
Mayors? Not enough data on that. But Eric Johnson definitely is a poor tipper.
23mou-sapnu-puas@reddit
Haha that’s exactly how I was going to respond if someone took the bait lol
bright1111@reddit
Fortunately Dallas has a weak mayor system, so any body can do it.
ElGranQuesoRojo@reddit
That's what made it even more obnoxious when he came in and tried to act like it was unfair he wasn't able to just do whatever the fuck he wanted. He knew what the Dallas mayor could and could not do. He just DGAF b/c he doesn't think any rules apply to him.
Danyboii@reddit
Why?
Original_Bid5479@reddit
Nah no thank you. Just as we got enough housing too.
CostRains@reddit
I'm sure this concrete jungle will be very attractive to New Yorkers lol.
HRApprovedUsername@reddit
I might fuck around and move to NYC
TheDakestTimeline@reddit
Did it, not great unless you have a shitload of money, you're gonna need a place upstate or on LI to get away to
BuckleupButtercup22@reddit
But in New York you will be able to shop in government stores where every item costs about 5% more than a typical grocery store
returningtheday@reddit
I mean upstate NY looks gorgeous so I wouldn't complain. But the job market? Now there'd be something to worry about.
HRApprovedUsername@reddit
I have a little bit under a shitload of money, so I think I can make it work

Why not? Especially if you agree with what they’re doing.

bigyittiezz@reddit
Eric Johnson doesn’t even show up to work anymore! No meetings with constituents, no town halls, he doesn’t even vote on issues that would help the black community in Dallas. Where does this loser even get the gall to say this?!
picantemexican@reddit
This is actually true. He straight up told me he hates being mayor lmao
VladtheBalad@reddit
What a POS. Has done nothing towards affordability for Dallas residents, and is throwing shade at someone attempting to help their own city

Ferrari_McFly@reddit

DreadLordNate@reddit
Every time I thought EJ had hit the bottom for being "a simpering pathetic jackass pandering to the GOP" he manages to drop even lower.
Seriously.
Fuck that guy.
False-Application-99@reddit
Ah yes. Anyone putting out a message you don't like is a panderer. While anyone broadcasting a message you support is a true believer
hisdeathmygain@reddit
Now, is not a time that moderates flip to GOP unless you are cynical. EJ did run as a Democrat to win Dallas mayor multiple times, but now that he is term limited as Mayor and eyeing more state level government as his next step, he has switched to GOP. Pragmatically, it probably makes sense, but you also have encouraged the suspicion/derision.
TXmama1003@reddit
He already did the state government thing. His eyes are higher.
DreadLordNate@reddit
Yeah, it's pragmatic in a really cold ass way. One does have to wonder though - given the fallout - how pragmatic that is.
hisdeathmygain@reddit
Definitely, I said pragmatically, but I definitely don't feel that it was ethical or moral. My values mean more to me. When I changed my political views, it was 100% due to ethical considerations.
DreadLordNate@reddit
Yeah. That and I mean...burning folks for the sake of political gain seems pretty short-sighted to me.
Like, it's betting that the side you tossed everyone over for will always control shit and you'll always be safe somehow.
I wouldn't bet that in any case, and certainly not if I were a PoC.
SipoteQuixote@reddit

I’ll never forget that in 2018 Beto won with native born Texans but lost because of all the domestic migration from REPUBLICANS
Oh the irony
Agentwise@reddit
If Beto would have just shut up for 60 days and not literally said “hell yeah I’m coming for your ars” our entire country would likely look massively different right now.
Furrealyo@reddit
That 30 second sound bite sealed his fate forever, but he never got the memo.
He’ll run again and lose again. Watch.
Agentwise@reddit
I’m not a conspiracy theorist but I sweat to god democrats in Texas seem to purposely tank their elections
Furrealyo@reddit
Texas is the B-leagues for Democratic candidates. Cannon fodder.
Anyone with a (D) worth voting for isn’t running in a hard-red state.
Boisenberry@reddit
This is so so so stupid, like native born texan democrats don’t actually want to improve their own home
thephotoman@reddit
You can't change a people who don't want to.
And I want to be clear: Texas will not get better until Texans are willing to change, until they're willing to care about their neighbors. But the one thing that Texans want to be free from the most is having to think about anybody else. It's why we drive like maniacs, why we shoot off guns into the air to celebrate shit (seriously, don't do that shit, you'll kill someone).
We hate each other. We want to hate each other. We want to tell everybody else to go fuck themselves. We believe that if we embrace our greed, we can have enough money to do exactly that. We want to externalize blame rather than embrace accountability--and in such a culture, faith in elections will falter because losers will cry foul rather than identify where they went wrong. We don't believe we can afford to be accountable, because we've watched people get screwed over for being accountable.
Furrealyo@reddit
Unfortunately for them, Texas has moved even further into the red thru transplants and the shift in Latino voting. It’s true that the larger cities and even some of their suburbs have shifted deeper blue, but Texas is a huge state and these liberal islands just can’t keep up as they get carved up into less impactful entities.
A national polarization is in progress and Texas is seen as being firmly on the “red side” which results in even more ideological/political migration, both “to” and “from” our state.
Arrmadillo@reddit (OP)
Talarico is pretty good. He’s probably running for senator in 2026, maybe governor.
Politico - He's Deeply Religious and a Democrat. He Might Be the Next Big Thing in Texas Politics. (2023)
“Like Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, [Tony Coelho, the veteran Democratic talent scout,] said, Talarico is a politician with ‘strong views and round edges.’ He continued, ‘This kid, in my view, is one of the best I’ve seen.’”
Emergency_Basket_851@reddit
Just Texas??
PseudonymIncognito@reddit
All I want is for the Democratic Party to shut up about gun control for two consecutive presidential election cycles.
Furrealyo@reddit
“Guns and God”
Dems can’t leave the first alone, and Republicans can’t leave the latter alone.
Prestigious_Stage699@reddit
That happened after the Senate race during his presidential run, so no it wouldn't.
Historical_Dentonian@reddit
He loses so often! How can we track which failed campaign he said the quiet part (gun ban) out loud?
soonerfreak@reddit
Running 3 cycles in a row does make it tough for me to remember when be said what sometimes.
Historical_Dentonian@reddit
And with that AR ban promise, Beto set back any chance of Democrats to win a statewide office by decades. 🤦♂️
Shartfartaway@reddit
Hey. The good guys with guns NEED those ARs in case the Federal government sends armed, masked , unidentified enforcers to abduct people—regardless of citizenship status or documentation—off the streets without a warrant, sending them to a foreign death camp without due process. When that day comes, we’ll all weep with joy as D-Boy and Jon-John come rolling coal down the road dressed in their finest tactical gear. True heroes and patriots. I thank G-d every day that they have mortgaged every single other one of my rights in the pursuit of more guns.
Snobolski@reddit
Maybe people could vote on more issues than "muh guns." Or is that asking too much?
Agentwise@reddit
I mean it’s Texas you have to be realistic about some things, there are a lot of pro 2nd amendment democrats in the southern states.
Snobolski@reddit
I'm thinking maybe the time for "I don't care about concentration camps as long as I have my guns" has passed.
I guess it's true -the only right 2nd Amendment folks care about is gun rights.
Agentwise@reddit
I know a lot of people who vote on one or two issues it’s unfortunate but it’s just the reality of how people are.
jzilla11@reddit
Whatever version of history helps you sleep at night
Tourist_Careless@reddit
Beto lost because of himself. He lost multiple times in multiple races. the gun control nonsense wasnt his only mess up. Remember him just randomly answering a question in spanish during the debate? dude was pure cringe.
D_Dumps@reddit
where is the irony?
tynskers@reddit
And ducking put them where??
flaming_bob@reddit
NYC Mayor: We're gonna make the buses free!
Dallas: We're gonna add more coal to the air you breathe, AND cut down all the trees for new billboards!
Um...okay.
earthworm_fan@reddit
Buses aren't free and that is MTA, not thr NYC mayor. All he can do is recommend 4 of 21 members to the MTA board. That guy is an idiot.
AlphaH4wk@reddit

OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
That’s an incredibly racist statement you just made
nicko3000125@reddit
How so?
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
Uncle Tom is a racist pejorative and you’re using it to disparage a black man you disagree with politically.
Also, in the book, Uncle Tom got killed for refusing to give up the location of other slaves. You’re using a slur that’s literally based in ignorance.
ItsJustAPoleThang@reddit
But he is an Uncle Tom? Would it be better if we called him said Uncle Ruckus from Boondocks lmao.
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
Damn so slurs are good when you disagree with the person?
Again, Uncle Tom got killed because he wouldn’t betray fellow slaves. The term is racist and literally the opposite of the character in the book.
das745@reddit
But in modern times it has a clear meaning. That it is not historical correct no one cares.
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
It’s a racist term used to denigrate black people who fall out of line politically.
ItsJustAPoleThang@reddit
Are you black?
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
I didn’t realize my race matters when calling out racism. Are people only allowed to call out racism against their own ethnicity?
ItsJustAPoleThang@reddit
I’m asking because If you actually hung out with the black community you would know that this word is far from being a slur. We don’t care about this word, there is far more things we are worried about in regard to racism against us.
alextheruby@reddit
The word is a slur, and especially so from a non black person. Just because we’re desensitized to it and use it commonly doesn’t make it not a slur.
I’m black btw. You and your homies don’t speak for us
ItsJustAPoleThang@reddit

Not gonna assume your background or heritage, but I just wanna encourage my fellow white people to recognize that we should NEVER under any circumstances call a Black person an Uncle Tom. Once again, not assuming anything about the commenter I’m replying to.

We were all surprised when it turned out a majority of Californians moving to Texas were Conservative. I wonder if the same will turn out to be true for these New Yorkers.

I’m talking about the injunction case with birthright citizenship. The court basically said that courts can only issue injunctions for states that sued to stop the blatantly unconstitutional order.
