This. I always take lunch, but stagger my leaving time between 4 and 5:30 depending on my evening responsibilities, but as long as I put in 40 weekly, nobody cares.

I wish my company was this flexible. I’d love the option of taking off early from time to time so long as I put in my 40.

Isn’t this the point of being salaried instead of hourly? It should gain you some flexibility in my opinion. Otherwise, why not just count my hours?

I’m salaried, but because of what I do (technical service support) I need to be available between 8 and 5. Salary just makes it nice to not have to keep track of hours.

At an old job years ago I had a boss that told me as long as I got all my work done I could leave whenever I wanted. I didn’t work past noon on a Friday for a couple years. It was pretty great. I was sad when that position was eliminated… but it honestly never should have existed in the first place.

Anyone getting odd at 330 works for government 😂 jokes aside, the New York Summer trend began to pop up in the Midwest about 2019. I worked in news at the time and getting ahold of people on a Friday past noon was next to impossible. At the time, the 5p show was the earliest evening newscast, so having folks in gov off at 330 was actually beneficial to me at the time
View on Reddit #60105398

flareblitz91@reddit

Haha that’s very true. Fridays are impossible, December is also a fruitless time trying to get a hold of anyone, all the older career people have so much “use or lose” leave they practically take the whole month off.

View on Reddit #60122683

TrungusMcTungus@reddit

When I was in the Navy, we split up leave periods in Dec so half the crew was on leave for the Christmas side of it, and the other half was off for the new years side. So from December 15th to like January 3rd, it’s a 50/50 shot on finding the guy you need. Supply houses are undermanned and not sending parts so work basically stops. Lots of leaders take a “Well we may as well chill while we can” attitude, and work gets pushed off. Tons of leaders basically turn December into a muster only month.

Oh absolutely. My coworkers claim their hours are to avoid traffic, but there's no one else on the road when I leave at 5. The few times I have left at 3, it's taken me twice as long to get home, longer during the school year with the busses. I think if they could work 3am to 11 they all probably would.

I got two weeks of vacation.  In the 00s, I had kids. I left for work at 6:00, arrived at 6:30, had a one hour lunch, and worked until 16:30. I hit home around 17:15 or 17:30. I usually worked another 5 or 10 hours from home each week. I got 3 weeks off vacation.  In the 10s, my commute was 15 minutes each way, but I sometimes 20 going home. I left home around 6:00, got to work by 6:15, had an hour of lunch, and left around 17:15. I got home around 17:30. I had every other Friday off, but I worked most of those days. With work at home, I I averaged around 50 hours a week. I got seven weeks off vacation, but usually used 5 or 6 weeks of it. I retired at age 54. I still get up by 5:00 every morning.

Depends on the time of year. If schools are in session I make a serious effort to get out of the house before 7am, because that's when the school busses start running. That usually gets me to work by 7 or 7:30. During the summer I sleep in a bit and usually get to work around 8. I'm only required to put in 8 hours a day, and only have to stop counting the time if I am away from my desk/not working for more than 10 minutes, so I bring my lunch and eat while working.

I’m officially salaried but everyone including salary employees have to clock in/out, log all 8 hours with what we did, and clock out for lunch. No clue why since the majority of employees at my company are salaried, but I’ve always taken it as a way to micromanage. Let the managers see if we took 46 minutes for lunch or left a minute early.

>That is not how salaried jobs work It is in most of the country. Some salaried employees clock in but they get paid the same regardless, basically just a tracker. Some don't require a clock in/out but you still have to take a lunch break according to the employment contract, and you have set hours. Some pay you a salary, but if you work less hours they actually dock your pay for that day. These are all salaried jobs

No shit moron. Its called reductio ad absurdum. I was using it to illustrate the point. Salary has no "clock." Obviously you are expected to work 30-50 hours, sometimes more, at least in the US. When you are a salaried employee you don't punch a clock, there is no, "not getting paid for lunch." You have a set wage, whether you show up or not. Obviously if you don't show up, you likely won't be pulling a salary for long. The point being that you seem to not understand, is that you don't "clock out" for lunch if you are a salaried employee.

A lot of (most?) salaried jobs in the US require an unpaid lunch, which turns a 9-5 into a 9-6 or 8-5, with an hour lunch.

I think the misconception that salary is the same thing as overtime exempt is rearing it’s head in this thread. I’m a federal employee , I have a standard tour of duty with a basic work requirement of 80 hours biweekly. My schedule is flexible with certain prescribed “core” work hours and i *shouldn’t work before 6 am or after 6 pm unless mission requires it. I am required to take a 30 minute unpaid lunch, as in those 30 minutes don’t count towards my 80 hour work requirement.

You know you can block time off on your work calendar to take a lunch? It’s healthy for your brain.
View on Reddit #60162267

Daphoid@reddit

I make time for lunch. Only flexibility I do is I take it from 1-2 PM because a lot of our company is in CST and thus I get meetings from 11-12 their time. But even if I get booked over my lunch I move it, not shrink it. Take time for yourself. This will help avoid burnout. And eating at your desk while working does not count. I used to do this early in my career but not anymore. I literally switch inputs to my personal PC and watch youtube / go lounge in bed / step outside, what have you.

I feel like OP severely underestimated the diversity of casual fuck you scams in the United States economy. Like if he collects this data to the point of usefulness it will be easily over a hundred million responses and a majority will be non repeating cases as the mutual goal of the hiring/scheduling manager and the employee will be to fuck each other around in most cases, sparking ranks arbitrary outcomes, and the rest will be in a weird position from being forced to compensate in order to keep the economy afloat.

HR policy is that salaries employees don't have mandatory minimum. However we have to report time to projects and the tool won't take an input less than 40. People who don't have to use the project tool get a free pass I guess. There's no concept of comp time. So if you worked 120 last week, you still have to log 40 minimum this week. Unless you don't have to use the project tool. Core hours are 9-4. You can come in earlier or work later. If you have to use the project tool, don't forget about your mandatory minimum. For everyone else, manager discretion. Lunch is flexible but understood to be any time between 11 and 1.

I take a one hour lunch as part of my “8 hour day” (ie on company time) and try to be out of the office/done with work between 4 and 5. Most companies I’ve worked for within the past decade and a half have been “core hours” (10-3) required but generally flexible time. They have also provided breakfast and lunch or had cafeterias on site. Outside of core hours M-F where I need to be available for meetings, I am free to work on my own schedule, pickup/drop off kids, etc…

Have worked in an office and had a 1 hour commute. Usually get there about 0700 and left around 2:30 to beat traffic (Southern California). Lunch at my desk. Then would typically do a quick check in at home. My role was supporting operations and I would frequently say we “were paid for the work not the hours”; so if there were no issues staying longer didn’t make any sense. Officially it's 8-5 CST (9-6 for me) - but what I actually work varies. might be anywhere between 9-10 to anywhere from 5-7 depending on meetings at tasks. The time is not the important part, the quality of work is. You're not "working" just by having your butt in the chair. I always take an hour lunch, it's in my calendar. If someone books over it - I just shift the meeting but do not skip it. Also I don't eat and work. I may switch inputs to my home PC and watch youtube, step outside, play xbox, lounge on the bed, etc. I don't get paid for overtime or after hours maintenance so it all balances out anyways. Again, it's about the work output not your time sitting there.

When I was still on site, my hours were typically 8:00am until 4:00pm with significant flexibility in exchange for the occasional after-hours emergency, Now that I work from home, pretty much the same just without a commute. I work Monday through Friday. I typically come in at around 8:30 am, and leavre at around 5:30 pm, with around an hour of lunch. My personal work doesn't directly rely on a team of other people, at least not in a way that requires coordinating schedules. So as long as I'm getting my necessary tasks and projects done, my supervisors are pretty relaxed about when I come in and when I leave.

My career is currently on hiatus raising my son, but prior to his birth I worked salaried in an office with set hours of 8:30-5pm with an hour lunch and 15 minutes of personal time (used for coffee or restroom breaks, or even a mental health break, it was a stressful environment). 40 hours a week, which a chance of overtime during busier times (I’ve been asked how I could make overtime as salaried and idk but the company offered it lol).

Other than that they pretty much leave me alone, as long as the education metrics are being met. Do I find the job fulfilling? Not really. Often it was a Saturday or Sunday as well. Of course, I worked in state government, and while most people like to say government employees are lazy and never work -- that was true of some -- most of us worked 60 hour weeks and more. Never 40. I am speaking strictly of the salaried employees and not the hourly government employees. Don't know about them. More like 7:30 to 6:30, with an hour for lunch that got truncated to about 15 minutes most days, if not worked through completely. Fortunately there was no commute on top of that; I lived 3 blocks away. Oh, and it involved a lot of after-hours stuff. 3 am break-fix calls on weekends, monthly 4am maintenance, that kind of thing. Why no, there wasn't an on-call rotation, why do you ask? Who does that? Everyone? Oh. They must not have heard of that in Higher Ed... In the U.S., anyone making around $44,000 and up (about $21 / hour) is considered so well-paid that they have "management" responsibility, even if no one reports to them. Employers have used this threshold (which hasn't been updated in decades, much like the minimum wage) to basically coerce unlimited labor out of salaried employees, while simultaneously forcing them to stay on the job even if they have no work to complete. Yes, both of those are technically illegal under U.S. labor law, but so are retaliatory discipline & dismissals, and those happen every day, almost everywhere.

I work for one of the most well known companies on the planet. My team is actually spread between the US and Asia Pacific. So we all work different hours. Also on a hybrid schedule so Monday and Friday are WFH. I like having the afternoon for me, so I start working at 4 am and usually off around noon. I'm the first one in the office but my local team starts rolling in shortly thereafter. And yup we're on salary. The one bummer is that most special events like Pride Day, celebrations etc are typically scheduled in the afternoon but I've been here for 25 years and gone to plenty of them. Most of the current workforce is significantly younger than I am and start working at "normal" hours.

I used to be on a x4 10’s schedule. Then we could adjust to either have Monday or Friday off. I really enjoyed it. It was rough in the winter. But having the extra day to recover, take care of things that have to be done during a weekday, just made it worthwhile. The drawback, less time with my family during the week. I’m currently on x5 8’s and I usually work 9 hour shifts because I like to knock out stuff that I start…. I don’t like to leave things for the following day. But now it’s an additional tank of fuel, and another 8 - 10 hours commuting time for the month.

View on Reddit #60113271

myownfan19@reddit

A somewhat common trend is 40 hours per week but the actual hours don't matter as much as long as it starts daily by 10 and ends by 2. This is mostly for folks who have "internal" company work to do and aren't required to be available for customers. This of course may vary if there is some hot project that must be addressed immediately, but that's not always the case. So some places can do 9x4 and then a half day on Friday and still get 40 hours. Unfortunately that's not how my current job is.

I work when I want to, where I want to, as long as a I want to. Total flexibility as long as I get my work done, the only structured time is when I am teaching classes. I'm a college professor, which is about the most flexible job you can imagine in terms of time structure...though most of us are working 50-60 hours/week while being paid for 40. (Also working for free in the summers, unpaid but expected to be producing research/publications.) Practically speaking, during the academic year when classes are in session I typically arrive at 730am and leave around 330pm. Though on non-teaching days I will sometimes work from home or take a day off entirely. There is no structured "lunch hour," I usually eat at my desk while working on other tasks as I'm often in class until 1230pm.

Last salaried job I had, I did 8am-4pm because I wanted to stagger to avoid the heaviest traffic. I mean, 6am-3pm would have been better, and I have had jobs with those hours. In the DC area, traffic really gets started at 7am and doesn't end until 10am, then again 11:30am-1pm for lunch rush, then about 3:30pm to about 7:30pm. That's both roads and bus/metrorail. The issue is that for every 5 minutes you're delayed getting out, it can add 10-15 minute to your total commute, depending on where you are. So if that meeting ran until 4:15, that's an extra 30 minutes to get home. I'd say my normal day was about 3-4 hours commute total, longer if the metrorail broke down, which about once a week. There were days I left at 4, and didn't get back home until past 8pm because of "single tracking." Basically, a day of work was get up early like 5:30-6:00 am, walk to bus stop, ride bus, get on metro, ride metro, walk to work, and hopefully get there before 8am. Then work until 4, and reverse the steps, get home like 6:30-sh (depending on metrorail and bus schedule timing). "Why didn't you drive?" Because it would take the same amount of time, really. At least I could cat nap and zone out on a bus or rail, and it cost slightly less when you add in gas, wear-and-tear, and parking fees. Plus, often work had a "compensation program" where my fare was deducted from my paycheck pre-tax, so I saved a little more money that way. So weekdays? Jack all gets done outside of work. Five days of just existing, no shopping, repairs, hobbies, or anything. You cram all that into the weekend. Now I work hourly from home, and the hell with commuting. It's brutal out here.

My official work hours were 8:00 to 5:00, but I was expected to be available around the clock. I've had plenty of calls before 6:00 am to get something prepared for the boss before 6:30, so they can be prepared for the 7:00 am meeting, or get calls at 6 in the evening to begin working on something that's going to take me several hours to complete, and has to be done RIGHT NOW. It wasn't uncommon that I actually put in 65 hours a week. My boss actually told me that I am never to be unavailable and she expected a call back within 5 minutes if she didn't get me on her first try, no matter what time, day or night, even on the weekends or during my vacation. I quit because of this kind of work/life balance issue, and now work an hourly retail sales job from 9:00 to 6:00. When I'm off the clock, I'm off the clock.

I work on a team that has members all across the US, as well as overseas. Because of the fact that most of my direct contacts are about 3 hours ahead of me, I try to start around 7 AM. I normally need to drive my kids to school around 8, so after I drop them off I go into the office and then spend until 330-4 working. If I have a work at home day I keep similar hours. My work will require me to do extra hours to meet deadlines every few weeks so I treat it a little like comp time, where I might dip out a little early other days. I’m lucky that my boss is willing to let me flex a bit since they know the work is getting done and I am always available during core hours (hours when the whole team has overlapping work hours).

I work in an office two days a week. I usually arrive around 8:30, leave between 5:30 and 6:30 - and I do take a lunch. Hours can be tricky because it is a startup and sometimes we're on fairly aggressive deadlines, but I make a point to get away from the office for a bit every day to take lunch. Arrival time mostly depends on traffic - it's a drive that can take 40 minutes or twice that.

Note how many people say they don't take a lunch or only take a 30 minute lunch at their desk. This always irritates me. 99% of the time they are taking breaks that are just as long without officially taking a lunch. Then they are inevitably gone before the end of the day when I need support on something. I always take a 1 hour lunch... my workplace is flexible but I usually start at noon. I need the break from my desk otherwise I'm less productive. Sometimes I take a walk then eat at my desk. Sometimes I'll run errands and pick up a bite while I'm out. About half the time I eat in the company cafeteria... This has actually been critical networking time with other associates.

It’s 9:00 - 5:00, with an hour for lunch. However, our “core hours” are 9:30 - 4:30, so nobody expects anyone to actually work outside of that. You’re not expected to be in the office either. We’re also hybrid, so being in-office is only expected twice a week. I go in 3 times a week (my preference). As well, we have “Summer Fridays”, so we have half days until September. I’m a manager and I reaaally don’t care when my direct reports are in office, take vacation, etc. - as long as they meet deadlines, show up at scheduled meetings and checkins - they can fuck around all day long for all I care. My job isn’t to manage their time, it’s to manage their productivity. I prefer my people to spend more time with their family, more time with the hobbies and more time relaxing. It doesn’t help the company if they’re twiddling their thumbs on the clock looking for more paper to push, and it doesn’t help them keep motivated. Workers that feel a healthy work-life balance is a part of their compensation are workers that don’t want to turnover.

A typical day for me is 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM. I work a modified schedule, in which I work 9 hour days instead of eight. (The extra 30 minutes is my lunch break, which is unpaid.) Instead of 40 hours per week, I’ll work 44 hours the first week and 36 the second, with a flex day every other Friday in Week 2. So, it averages out to 40 hours per week. I generally use this flex day for continuing education courses to keep current on my skills, or for running various errands at places that are only open during traditional business hours. I should note that I work for the federal government , and it is very likely that the current Administration will nix alternative schedules and make us all work 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 40 hours per week. Anything that gives the appearance that civilian government employees are getting a bone thrown to them is not popular at the moment.

My day starts between 2AM and 4 AM and lasts until 6PM 7 days a week. Don’t worry I make plenty of money and yes I do still find time for myself, my wife, my hobbies and sleep. I’m the GM of a luxury car service. We go through seasons right now is a slow season so I may come into the office later now and leave earlier. My dispatchers and booking agents and drivers do not need me on a day where all the on duty drivers only have two or three rides. I can wake up, shoot a few emails, grab the staff a box of Joe and some donuts, say my piece, check in with the owners and our litigation team. Maybe squeeze in a meeting. Discuss the next round of vehicles to be purchased. Be out of the office and home by 2. Sometimes if something needs to be transported between offices I’ll do it myself on the slow days such as vehicle registrations or plates save a driver an extra trip to send him home early. Sometimes theirs an accident report so I need to contemplate how to approach the situation. On the busy seasons my office floor is very comfortable and thank GOD our owners moved us into an office space with a gym so I can still get in a shower and a workout. I take two vacations a year my wife gets to pick one and I pick the other. I am of course still on call for these vacations and still have to respond to emails and take calls but, for the most part the ops manager and my assistant can handle the day to day without me since I only take vacations in the slow seasons.

Okay, oh hey it's 5pm I'm done for the day. TBF, it wasn't really conscious malicious compliance, *per se*. Manager forced me to watch the clock, so I got in the habit of watching the clock. In consulting so it can vary. Some weeks, there might be barely any work (\~15-20 hours) while others may be 50-60+ with client work (have seen a coworker work beyond midnight on a Friday night for an urgent deliverable for the client the following Monday). Weekend work is uncommon but does happen. The few times it has happened, it was only 1-2 hours of work that could be done at my leisure.

Typically 7am to 4pm with a 1 hour lunch. We have flex hours so I can show up as late as 9am and nobody would have a problem. With a day of prior notice, I can show up pretty much any time I need. As long as I get my 40hours each week and I’m getting my work done, nobody cares.

M-F 9-5, with a 30 minute lunch. My bosses really don't care if I occasionally arrive a little late, leave a little early here and there, or occasionally take a longer lunch as long as I keep this office running smoothly. I get my shit done way before deadlines (and sometimes before they think getting it done would be possible... the advantage of having a production mindset in a setting with a lot of administrative minds), have good problem-solving skills in a position where new and weird problems frequently show up, and I'm always willing to help other sites figure out simpler solutions to their problems. Plus they know that I have zero problem arriving a little early or staying a little late if something comes up that needs immediate fixing. So they're willing to call the hours even as long as shit gets done.

I'm technically hourly for some reason, but I work in an office for local government. I think its just because our HR isn't very sophisticated and don't know how a negative time system works in order to make their job easier. They literally do everything the hardest way possible as someone who comes from state govt in another state, but I digress. I work 40 hour weeks. In my last position in state gov't, I worked 8-4:30 and most people left at 4:15 with an hour lunch. Now, at the county level we work the exact same hours. I take lunch at my desk though so I rarely leave. In both positions there were serious mandatory overtime as work in an elections office so during election time we can be expected to work up to 60 hours a week and when that happens, our hours are all over the map.

My employer is large and there are vast differences in roles. Some people have a set schedule that they are required to work, some teams set core hours so everyone is online at same time (majority of us WFH all the time or majority), some have a lot of freedom and can set their hours. I work with people that work 0500-1330, I work 0730-1545, many do 0800-1615. Generally speaking you don’t see a lot of people after 1630 if they can set their own hours. We also have folks in different parts of country. My team has one member on Eastern time, majority of us on Central time , and a co-worker out in AZ. She works Central time hours so 0600-01430ish.

I am now retired but my typical day was 6:30 to 4 with maybe a half hour lunch so I could go grab a quick lunch and eat at my desk. Italian (pizza or pasta) was my go to. I worked in NYC so it was always delicious. I worked for a Taft-Hartley health and retirement fund in the medical review department, and I sometimes helped paying medical claims when needed. The fund was self funded, though the claims department had a good number of people, the department I worked in was only two, our manager, and an independent physician consultant. We handled treatment and surgical pre-authorizations. The fund’s life number was under 20K but still the work could be time sensitive. I found coming in early very relaxing because that meant my commute was relatively traffic free (I commuted from New Jersey). I got my morning toasted bagel, sat at my desk and started on anything difficult I had left from the day before. When I knew I’d be on vacation my hours could range from 6am to 10pm (when our IT dept shut it all down to do maintenance. If I worked for home I worked even longer hours because lunch and dinner were at my desk and no commute time at all. I did not like working from home because I didn’t have access to the convenience of the office. I never minded the hours. Now I just putter around though I don’t think I could take the grind of the daily commute like I did in my younger years.

Sometimes I go to the office, sometimes I don't. I work whenever I have meetings scheduled or things to review. There aren't any set hours and my commute if needed is after the morning rush and before the evening rush. The pandemic was great because it normalized that type of schedule and I never have to sit in traffic again!

Damn. Reading these replies most Americans hours suck. 8-5 with no lunch? And no annual leave. That's gotta suck man.

8-4 with a half hour paid lunch. I would prefer 7 or 730 start. I'm occasionally allowed to skip my lunch if I'm the only one there and leave at 3:30.

Monday to Friday, 7am to 3:45pm with a 45 minute lunch. I could start working as late as 8:15am if I wanted to, but the commute is so much better if I’m not right in the middle of rush hour. Plus I get home at a reasonable time to make dinner or take the kids to whatever they need to do.

By office work I'm taking that as white collar - I'm in IT and partial telework. I have a condensed schedule. I work 8 nines (6am-3:30pm) and an 8 (6am-2:30pm) with every other Friday off.

Generally speaking 9:00-6:00 one hour lunch is "office hours", but our company has a hard rule. "You do not miss your family life for work" That said I typically get here 9:30ish at earliest, eat at my desk and work through it, and leave 5:00. When I do go out for an hour give and take lunch I might stay later if there is stuff to be done. Tuesdays and Thursdays I leave at 4:15ish as I have to get home to grab my son to get him to hockey practice. So long as I am getting the important work done and it is on the calendar, no one cares when I come and go or if I work from home or here at the office.

In the US I've worked 7-3pm or 8-4pm. Overtime is regulated under the FLSA. Anything over 8 hours/day is paid overtime. 8 hours = 7.5 paid hours, including two 15 minute breaks, plus 1/2 hour unpaid lunch.

Kind of hard to describe. Work from home starting around 7AM. Head in usually around 9 or so. In the office til at least 6PM sometimes later. Usually log on again around 10 for an hour or two. Really I can be working anytime I get a call or need to. This sounds rough to a lot of people, but the trade off is that any time I don’t have scheduled calls/meetings etc my time is mine as long as the work gets done, so if I want to run an errand or even play golf, as long as my work is getting done, no one cares.

6:30am- 5:00pm, Mon-Thurs. typically half hour lunch, but I go out to lunch once a week. And there’s sometimes stuff I need to take care of or reply to on my days off. If I need to leave early or come in late or go to an appointment during the day, I just let my boss know. Only our hourly employees punch in and out on a time clock.

I am guessing this applies to people who work in more corporate jobs as I don't physically go into an office as I am 100% remote. My hours are 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM local. I live in the midwest and the company I work for is headquartered on the West coast. Based on their time I am 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. They make us take a 1 hour lunch.
