Identification strategy?

Hey! Trying to identify some fish I saw today without having photos of them. Whats the best way to do this? Are there any go-to apps or community resources? Thanks!

Smithsonian fish apps are really good for eastern pacific and greater caribbean, otherwise grab the Audubon fishes field guide I’d say that is a pretty solid place to start. Using a dichotomous key is also great if you can track one down for fish in your area and understand fish anatomy.
