For me, it's the "80% of customers surveyed" who were supposedly happy for my area's water company to increase its customers' bills by 41%.

National lottery winners. Ok I know they 'exist' but since 1994 the jackpot has been won over 7400 time, yet I haven't personally known anyone whose won it.
likes2milk@reddit
So my very basic maths on a population of 60m means you'd have to have a circle of friends of 10,000 to know 1.
AcceptableCustomer89@reddit
People underestimate how large the population is. Not when you compare it to America etc. But 60-70 million is a hell of a lot of people
rice_fish_and_eggs@reddit
Hmm but if you include friends of friends that number probably isn't that high. Suppose you have 30 friends/ colleagues that 1 degree of separation pool probably is close to 10k people.
watryatalkinabout@reddit
Do you everyone if your they know someone who's won the lottery?
rice_fish_and_eggs@reddit
No you might tell those close to you and they spread.
northernblazer11@reddit
I know of 3 people who won over 2 million each.
All 3 are now skint and back working.
nightmaresgrow@reddit
My granddad's neighbour won when I was a kid, not long after the lottery started.
He was already retired and barely changed his lifestyle.
They went on the same group trip as my grandad not long afterwards and my grandad was upset that he didn't buy him a pint.
ListenFalse6689@reddit
Someone once gave me some money for the kids to spend at the shopping centre. She had won a fair amount apparently but didn't say how much. She said they were behaving nice so she thought she would treat them, if I didn't mind. Could have just been a few 100 or 1000 but who knows. The kids got a tenner each I think, but it was a few years ago now.
DifficultConcept9832@reddit
I knew someone that won, well it was a family they had a little group ticket, one son died soon after through drug, the other some time later in a car crash, he wasted his money on fast cars and expensive divorces, the mother died from cancer, the dad died of a stroke.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
You may know people who haven't told anyone. I know of a couple of people who have nice houses, barely work and say they got money in "property". This could be a cover story for a lottery win for all I know. The funny thing is there are a lot more smaller prizes that would still be lifechanging. I never hear about people who won even a few grand.
luckeratron@reddit
I know of two people who have won the lottery.
JayR_97@reddit
If I won the lottery, id keep super quiet about it. Heard too many horror stories.
Round_Caregiver2380@reddit
If I won it, nobody would know.
I don't have expensive tastes. I'd just get a small house with a massive garden. More room for the dogs to run with minimal housework required.
I'd probably go on quite a few holidays but I never take pictures so I could spend a fortune going to Easter island and just say I was in Benidorm.
The national lottery isn't private jet money these days, it's live very comfortably with a few luxuries money.

MisterWednesday6@reddit (OP)
I'd be more willing to accept an increase in my water bill (although I still consider 41% to be morally wrong in the current financial climate) if I was certain that money from water bills was not going towards the £371,000 bonus of the repulsive woman in charge of my water company, who defended her decision to keep it by saying that she needed to be "incentivised".

The existence of migraines. I think people just get a headache and aren't as robust or perpetuate the existence of a more serious headache condition to get out of things.

AdministrativeLaugh2@reddit
It’s a small thing obviously, but I’ve never put any faith in those lists. It’s simply whatever Netflix wants to show you, whether that’s because it’s one of their Originals or something they’ve just paid a ton to licence.
I remember when they got Harry Potter and I happened to be pottering (lol) about on Netflix when they were put up, which I assume was just after midnight.
They were all immediately in the “Top 10 Popular Movies” list.

bishibashi@reddit
Rare to see someone take the agnostic position rather than bang on and on about atheism.
Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
I suspect most of the UK are actually agnostic but it's not so much a stance as a lack of one so people feel less need to share.
bishibashi@reddit
Totally agree, I’m easily wound up by people who claim atheism without realising what a serious position they’re taking.
what_sBrownandSticky@reddit
There's no real concencus on where the line between agnosticism and atheism should be drawn, so you're just encountering people who define it differently
I normally take atheism just to mean the absence of belief in any gods which is not a very demanding position at all
CurrentTurbulent@reddit
Well they are different, agnostic is you're sat on the fence as to whether a god exists or not, Atheists say 100% there is no god
blamordeganis@reddit
I’m an atheist, and I don’t “say 100% there is no god”.
I don’t believe in God, same way I don’t believe in leprechauns, but I accept the possibility that I could be mistaken (as I could about the leprechauns).
CurrentTurbulent@reddit
Your agnostic then, not atheist
blamordeganis@reddit
My copy of the Shorter OED gives this as its first definition of “atheist”:
That seems to capture my position pretty concisely.
bishibashi@reddit
Yeah I’ve been reading a bit since this morning and agree with your definition, so I’m happy to adjust my position. I was coming at it from people I’ve had drunken rows with in the past who are what are now called “hard atheists”.
FondantCrazy8307@reddit
What makes it serious?
bishibashi@reddit
Just said to someone else I didn’t appreciate that “hard atheism” isn’t the only kind - if it’s just not believing there is a god I have no issue, I’m thinking of people I’ve spoken with in the past who espouse the absolute impossibility of the existence of deities. I have no problem changing my position based on new info. Welcome, atheists!
FondantCrazy8307@reddit
Oh okay, Im an atheist because I believe it’s the easiest way to live life! Life is already hard, I don’t need any more rules or judgement!
olivercroke@reddit
It's about as serious as saying I don't have an invisible, silent green man on my shoulder at all times. Sure, I can't know it to not exist for certain but the distinction between that and being agnostic about its existence is frankly irrelevant.
MisterWednesday6@reddit (OP)
I'm agnostic after it hit me that, without exception, the most spiteful and horrible people I have ever had dealings with have all been practising Christians.
CurrentTurbulent@reddit
There's a lot of them in the US and it's weird how spiteful and full of hate they are, so unchristian!
Unfair-Ad-9479@reddit
This precisely. It is incredibly weird and in itself sort of ‘reverse cultish’ how atheism is A Big Thing in the US and is seen as an affront to any sort of theism [that is in line with what theists of their chosen religion believe].
In the UK, it’s more an ‘okay, cool’ situation.
AdministrativeLaugh2@reddit
I suspect that the vast majority who aren’t religious simply don’t think about whether there’s a god or not
takesthebiscuit@reddit
Wasn’t the Archbishop of Canterbury at least agnostic?
flippertyflip@reddit

Round_Caregiver2380@reddit
If there is a god, it's not the one most religious people worship.
Many of the bible stories were adapted from Sumerian stories about their multiple gods.
We have the stories on cuneiform tablets they left.
LittleSadRufus@reddit
Ah but god needs a pope to communicate through, and to correctly communicate his holy messages like "give all your money to the pope".
The Sumerians didn't have a pope, so they just heard garbled messages and wrote down their best guess at what was intended. "Homosexuality is a sin unless a priest's doing it with a handsome choirboy in which case let's all forget about it" can easily be misheard as "Enki is the god of wind, water and all creation and I thank you not to forget it".

Whimbley@reddit
My wife used to get all sorts of creams and lotions from one of those survey companies. It was nearly always unbranded with stuck-on labels, but sometimes they used the same shape bottle as what the final product would come in, so you could tell what company it came from.
Can confirm the surveys she had to fill in at the end were incredibly long-winded, when she just wanted free stuff, so the responses were mostly made up or she got me to fill them in.
AdministrativeLaugh2@reddit
Finding people to survey is easy. Getting people to respond for the duration of the survey and fill in all the required information is significantly more difficult.
