GenX that have muted Reddit communities...
Posted by JazzfanRS@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 221 comments
I've been on Reddit for 3 years. I only subscribe to 7 subreddits, Usually that number is smaller by 2 or 3. So my feed is empty sometimes. And I browse the popular feed and am often exasperated by what is 'popular' and have muted 15 communities, I really DGAF about their topic, and tire of seeing them pop up.
A feel alone in thinking I have become a narrow minded curmudgeon.
Disclaimer, I don't want to go battle over the merits or faults of specific communities, so I ask you not disclose the ones you may have muted.
Delightful_Helper@reddit
Oh I've muted plenty. Also , I'm not afraid to block people either. I like a certain type of environment when I'm here
Ewendmc@reddit
Once they get personal they get blocked.
evilJaze@reddit
I've shut off all DMs too. It's sad when people have nothing better to do than antagonize when they don't like what you have to say. No, Sparky, I don't owe you a debate about any subject.
Alltheprettydresses@reddit
Sealioning is interesting. I was accused of that in a now muted community for having the audacity to ask a follow-up question instead of saying "yes sir you're right!" to one of the popular kids, lol. Not even trying to debate because I dont have time for that.
TangledUpPuppeteer@reddit
Here is some time, now, let’s debate!!!
I’ll start: uh huh!
Alltheprettydresses@reddit
Yuh huh! 😝
TangledUpPuppeteer@reddit
NUH-uh!!
We did it! We both found time for an online debate! I’m so proud of us!!
Alltheprettydresses@reddit
pl0ur@reddit
Nah nah a boo boo!
TangledUpPuppeteer@reddit
😝
Ewendmc@reddit
They really should think twice about starting stuff with Gen x. We had to fight our flame wars in real life, not behind a keyboard and don't need the drama.
Mountain_King_5240@reddit
What’s the deal with everyone saying GenX is so tough? I’m GenX and it wasn’t a war zone and I was gay in the 90s. Is there super powers from the hose water? 😂. I’m sorry but I find the generational stuff silly and pathetic.
Forward_Ad2174@reddit
In a demographic of 62 million people, it just may be possible that others had a different experience than yours. I dunno. 🤷🏻♂️
Mountain_King_5240@reddit
Exactly but every GenX isn’t Rambo. Apply the same logic to the other side. Funny how the generation that doesn’t care is getting so triggered 😂
Forward_Ad2174@reddit
Ok I guess? Whatever.
Mountain_King_5240@reddit
Now that’s the true idgaf answer!
Ewendmc@reddit
You find it silly and yet you are on about boomers. A lot of us may have had a different life to you. I'll ask my mates who were gay in the 80s how they had it. We were hitting 30 in the mid 90s.
Mountain_King_5240@reddit
90s weren’t great for gay people but 80s were horrible. Oh you got offended ? Lol guess you did t drink enough hose water
Ewendmc@reddit
Found someone to block. Goodbye.
HapticRecce@reddit
Nice try there. It really was. But you overplayed laying the outrage fuel down. Have a great day!
Mountain_King_5240@reddit
Huh? Thats a word salad
Test4Echooo@reddit
It also greatly depends on where you’re from: country, large city or small town, social class, etc..
Mountain_King_5240@reddit
Totally. Same as any other generation
NervousAddie@reddit
Idk, mountain king. When I tell stories to my kids about how my walk to school was a negotiation process with about three different gangs… well I guess that’s not too much different from what lots of kids go through today. Never mind! They were awfully surprised that I would carry nun chucks in my trenchcoat for safety, and even used them once!
Mountain_King_5240@reddit
Nunchucks! That is awesome. We used to make crappy ones from broom handles. And for real with the kids. They have to worry about being shot up.
DfWZrgYf@reddit
Easy with the coffee, big fella.
Ewendmc@reddit
It's ok, I've had my coffee so am calmed down again.
DfWZrgYf@reddit
😂
LiquidSoCrates@reddit
Damn right! Talk some shit you best be ready to fight! They used to sell bongs and brass knuckles at the fair. One year the knuckles must have been on sale because everyone was using them. Then one year a head shop opened up that sold mace. Summer school was wild that year.
evilJaze@reddit
At least not anymore. I used to troll and annoy people back when I was a teenager on the old BBS boards. But now I can't imagine extracting any joy whatsoever from such activity. Jeez, I really am old!
JazzfanRS@reddit (OP)
Long time no troll, Jake?
evilJaze@reddit
I gave up sometime in my 20s.
JazzfanRS@reddit (OP)
Good. I hadn't seen or heard from "Jake" Jacob since 90 or 91. I think he was 15 at the time.
tag1550@reddit
We've also been doing it longer, so it takes a lot more to keep us engaged with a troll. "I've been personally attacked by people far more skilled at it than you, sir, and I find your attempt to get me worked up enough to reply in kind frankly boring and not worth my time."
BunkyBooBoo88@reddit
TIL about "sealioning" and I'm a better person for it!
Intrepid_Year3765@reddit
I block anyone that says something remotely rage bait or is just out right incorrect while claiming to be an expert. I also block anyone that brings up political content for no reason. I just don’t have time to deal with someone who wants to talk politics while I’m reading about a completely separate topic.
Test4Echooo@reddit
How do you block entire continents? Even in hobby or specialty subs, you have to be subjected to Europeans trashing the US constantly. It’s a very real issue that mods have no interest in addressing. Frankly, it ruins the whole experience.
Intrepid_Year3765@reddit
I would love that option. I wish I could block the entire country of India from trying to call my phone and scam me 20 times a day
Cheese-Manipulator@reddit
Also block people who go straight from 0 to 100 enrage level.
MissySedai@reddit
Yeah, if you're making politics your entire personality and need to drag that shit into a discussion about handmade pasta, I'm not even gonna respond. Block, block, block.
I'm just too tired to teach these assholes netiquette.
muscadon@reddit
Same. I also block plenty of people. The older I get, the less tolerance I have for whiny babies and trolls. My life, my rules.
MissySedai@reddit
I've always had a pretty twitchy ban/block finger.
Years ago, some asshole told me that only "closed minded" people block those who annoy them. I maintain that I only have so many free hours in a day, and I prefer not to expend them on ignorant fuckheads.
exscapegoat@reddit
Yes and sometimes the block is for their benefit too. I can have a tendency to beat a dead horse (metaphorically) and as I’ve become more aware of it, I can sense when I’ll be tempted.
So a block is better than the person and the rest of the participants having to read or scroll past my comments which engage in dead horse beating. Blocking the person helps me avoid dead horse beating.
Cheese-Manipulator@reddit
Yup. It is more about protecting your mental energy and attention and recognizing people who are just out for a fight, not an honest discussion.
Delightful_Helper@reddit
I belong to a lot of Christian subs . And they are full of atheists, skeptics, trolls and ppl there simply to argue . There can be a lot of attitude . As soon as I see someone start to get an attitude or show the slightest rudeness, I hit the block button. It makes the discussions much more pleasant
mpete76@reddit
I’m a Athiest, and I hate the trolls too, I go to the Atheist subs to talk to, wait for it ….. other atheists, not to have someone try to convert me. I wish people had mutual respect along both sides of this. I block a lot of people over there. I like this sub, it just never comes up, and there doesn’t seem to be people who feel the need to convert you here.
Test4Echooo@reddit
The biggest problem in r/atheism is Middle Easterners busting in to tell us all how wrong we are and that we’ll be sorry “someday”.
azrolator@reddit
My biggest problem is if you ever try to throw a Bible quote at one of these dudes who are telling you their god is about love, reddit automod flags you for violence lol. I've mostly given up trying to argue with these guys because the bans are one sided.
mpete76@reddit
Yeah, I either ignore those posts or block them.
Test4Echooo@reddit
It ruins the flow of conversation though. Any zealot busting in with that shit is bad enough, but those guys..oh boy🤯
Mountain_King_5240@reddit
That’s called an echo chamber
exscapegoat@reddit
Same.
Cheese-Manipulator@reddit
Blocking users is the path to happiness. You make an absolutely ridiculous comment and are totally tone deaf? Into rhe bit bucket you go. It realky makes my feed much nicer.
Hiding trash posts really helps too.
FunnyAsparagus1253@reddit
Same. I’ll engage for a while with an argumentative individual, then 👋block. Communities last a bit longer but if they cause me stress then they’re gone too.
Status_Silver_5114@reddit
Oh I block accounts ALL the time. Mute occasionally but I figure if I need to mute a feed I didn’t really want to follow it anyway.
ethottly@reddit
TIL you can mute subs lol
Seriously though, I'm glad to know this is an option!
Majik_Sheff@reddit
I aggressively curate my feed. It's not about being a curmudgeon, it's about dropping the noise floor.
vivekkhera@reddit
For me it is about creating joy. I don’t come here to feel more sad.
NerdyComfort-78@reddit
That’s my IG. All art and puppies.
whatever1886@reddit
Art and puppies? I need to find these subs!
NerdyComfort-78@reddit
Instagram, not Reddit. 😁
KaetzenOrkester@reddit
There’s a lot of similar subreddits.
Accurate_Weather_211@reddit
Same. And if I find something creeps through and gets me all lathered up, I have to walk away for a while. Give me "I can haz cheezburger" all day. And I'll admit if my posting history is checked there are things I'm not proud of, recently and in the past. It's a daily struggle not to get sucked into the vortex.
alwayssearching117@reddit
😂 I can has cheezburger.
My feed is cat videos and me has no cheez sammich posts, and I couldn't be happier.
Rocknrollpeakedin74@reddit
Wow. That’s sounds really cool, dude.
wdatkinson@reddit
~-124dB?
m149@reddit
24bit reddit. actually, I guess that would be -144db.
TheGrauWolf@reddit
Same... I've probably muted thirty or so, honestly lost count and don't care. But yeah I aggressively curate my feed as well.
evilJaze@reddit
Right. If I wanted to be blasted in the face with stupid shit like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, I'd be on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
jcpham@reddit
Several hundred subreddits but I stay away from popular for a reason
RemindsMeThatTragedy@reddit
I mostly get banned.
exscapegoat@reddit
I’ve muted some where people get obnoxious for no good reason. Or where there’s a lot of arguing
pastramilurker@reddit
Just went to check my profile settings and I have just under 120 muted subreddits. A lot of them are francophone ones because the French-speaking Internet has always had a toxic vibe made of inferiority complex and petty aggression.
b5wolf@reddit
Currently have 4 muted with others on the cutting floor
Grand_Taste_8737@reddit
I've muted several subreddits, mainly political ones.
TwpMun@reddit
I've lost count of the amount of subs i've clicked hide on, although I do have the option to suggest subs on; which to be fair does come up with some good suggestions a lot of the time.
omg_pwnies@reddit
1967 X'er with 15 years on Reddit. Here's what I do.
I only rarely use Reddit on my phone. I have a nice PC and use Reddit on Chrome. I also use the Reddit Enhancement Suite extension on Chrome.
I use the old layout. To do that: go to https://new.reddit.com/settings/ and scroll to the bottom, toggle "Opt out of the redesign" on.
I am subscribed to a bunch of subreddits that I love, all around the things that matter to me. Cats, dogs, video games I play, cooking, gardening; basically only stuff I'm interested in.
Then - I NEVER go to the main/generic feed. I go to /new every time and it only feeds me posts from the subreddits I'm subscribed to. If I see anything I don't like on there, I either report the post, or unsubscribe from that subreddit if it all looks like crap I don't want to see.
Sorry this is a bit long, but feel free to hit me up if you want help setting this up.
MrBrawn@reddit
Yep. I have a separate account for the main channels if I want to poke my head up but I keep to communities im interested in. This place is a big echo chamber and it can fuck with your perception of the world if you let it.
FailureFulcrim@reddit
By default, I click on "Controversial" when reading a comments on the big threads. The very nature of Reddit is shutting down the opinions you don't want to read with downvotes.
It's honestly a very backward way of thinking for someone that really wants to discuss topics and possibly learn something.
Cheese-Manipulator@reddit
Yup. The most downvoted comments can be the only ones that disagree and are the most interesting. Some are really just trolls though.
MrBrawn@reddit
Yeah once they went public I knew this wasn't some bastion of free thought. It is very controlled for good or for bad.
Cheese-Manipulator@reddit
Gaming subs are the worst echo chambers. You'd think every trivial feature in a game was a life or death issue.
YOU_WONT_LIKE_IT@reddit
I’ve had to mute several hobby subs due to politics. The amount of subs that have just blended into one big low effort political commentary is ridiculous.
Test4Echooo@reddit
The propaganda is flying hard and fast since Ukraine and Russia kicked off, then got noticeably worse during US elections, and don’t get me started on Israel/Palestine. It’s reaching ridiculous proportions the past 2-3 mos it feels like.
Test4Echooo@reddit
Someone once mentioned that there’s a limit to how many you can block, is that true?
GazelleSubstantial76@reddit
"I also block jackasses like it's a side hustle."
Love it. I do the same. I have about all of the jackass filled side of my family blocked on Facebook. I don't have the energy for their bs.
umbathri@reddit
Seems like half the time I go to the main feed it is to mute a dozen new channels while looking for one that might be worth following from the chaff.
TesseractToo@reddit
Yep, this is the way
teelanovela@reddit
So much astroturfing these days, if you don't prune aggressively you'll see the most ludicrous shit.
Nadie_AZ@reddit
All I am going to say is Propaganda Works. And as such we have to take care to limit our exposure to it. If that is what helps you avoid it and save your mental health, then I see nothing wrong with it. Curmudgeon. Now get off my lawn. I need to install Wordperfect from floppy disks.
Cheese-Manipulator@reddit
I'll join a subreddit, realize after a few months that it is just the same stupid complaints, memes and lame puns over and over until I leave and mute it.
djauralsects@reddit
12 years in Reddit.
Subscribed to 216 subreddits.
I never visit Popular.
I’ve unsubbed from a few but I’ve never blocked a subreddit.
j-endsville@reddit
I haven’t muted anything because my default feed is only subs I want to follow. Having r/all as your default is sucker action.
SnazzieBorden@reddit
I couldn’t figure out at first why everyone was muting and blocking so many. I only have subs I want to see in my feed too. Sometimes Reddit throws a new one in there but if I ignore it, it goes away.
kneeblock@reddit
This is a common GenX response to opt out of things, but I think we made a mistake. Only the worst people kept talking while the too cool people opted out and now here we are in fascism.
Facelesspirit@reddit
I have no idea how many subreddits I have muted, but it feels like half if Reddit. It's your feed. Curate it how you want.
Mondashawan@reddit
I have SO MANY muted communities! To me the strangest thing of all, and I don't know if this is a generational thing, but it's all the anime! It's not just anime fandom, it's all the highly sexualized anime. I find it so bizarre that men are lusting over cartoons. Especially because most of them look like young girls. It's very creepy and pedophilic to me. I mute every anime community.
Impossible_Past5358@reddit
I have muted all of them, and every group i join, i immediately mute.
goalmouthscramble@reddit
My feed is curated and I constantly leave subs due to the nature of the content or aggressive moderation.
This place is not friendly to notion of l ideas that run counter the prevailing narrative.
OppositeFish66@reddit
Came here as a refugee from, and recovering user of, Twitter. There's plenty wrong in the world, but I need relaxation and joy, not rage and frustration.
So I aggressively set up my feed to be non-political. Anything that smelled of culture wars and us vs them got purged. Cute dogs, plumbing how-to, enticing visuals for followed.
I only read my feed, which is the only way to stay clean. Occasionally I end up on Popular without noticing, and although that is entertaining, I soon sense the rage and outrage building, and correct my mistake.
Seems that rather than go Popular and blacklist communities and users, it's cleaner to go with your feed and only see what I have explicitly whitelisted.
MorrowPlotting@reddit
I’ve been here awhile, back to when reddit was called the “front page of the internet.”
And that’s what I wanted. I wanted to keep up with “the internet.” I didn’t want a curated subset of my pre-determined interests — I’m here to experience the world, not shut out everything but what I already know I like.
I went years without adding or subtracting subreddits from the “core” 20-or-so everybody was automatically subscribed to.
In the past few years, reddit has changed its model entirely. There really isn’t a “default” reddit that MOST users experience anymore. The idea of the internet even having a “front page” is probably confusing to younger users.
gene-ing_out@reddit
My feed has a ton of subs, but I've always been the kind of person to just want to soak up as much as I can. I haven't muted any but that's really only because I didn't know you could. LOL
TheFoxsWeddingTarot@reddit
Popular us hot trash. I’ve been aggressively curating my feed for 11 years. The main. Reason is because I change interests. The second reason though is if I start seeing the same post ms reposted to several subs I follow. Then I know I can drop a few.
One-Earth9294@reddit
I've muted countless subs. Like all of the Indian/SE Asian ones that pop up in my feed that are about local city politics. My god there's a lot of those. Soccer stuff. F'n stock market stuff. I wish I could see a list of how many I've muted.
DaRiddler70@reddit
Reddit somehow thinks that if I want to follow my town/city/state sub.....that i care about some random other local sub.
GreenSalsa96@reddit
I started my own community that focuses on what I like, feelings free to check it out if you're into gardening and growing your own fruits and vegetables in a suburban setting.
r/suburbanhomesteading
Beast6213@reddit
Yeah. Name your own fucking dog.
I mute the uninteresting ones that make me irrationally mad.
Seriously. Hang out with your dog, figure out their personality and pick a name. It’s not hard. All the time to spent making that post should have been with your new puppy.
Colsim@reddit
I've been muting a lot of the big ones that are just ragebait, sharing stories of inconsiderate people or AITA or "controversial" opinions. Ask men is also a cesspit. I don't need that nonsense
Test4Echooo@reddit
For the longest, I was under the impression that AITA was a satire sub. There’s just no way some of the wacky things people claim in there happened. It was one of the first I muted as soon as I realized it was like a gladiator pit in there.
Colsim@reddit
I think a lot of it is now AI too. Someone's mother is always blowing up their phone about a reasonable thing they did.
Test4Echooo@reddit
AI is going to ruin Reddit, isn’t it? It’s already started😣
MyyWifeRocks@reddit
AskMen is run by a female moderator that seemingly hates men.
Colsim@reddit
90% of the comments I saw there seemed MRA/incel derived. I didn't stay long
omgkelwtf@reddit
I mute the absolute fuck out of subs. I block advertiser accounts. My reddit experience is pretty pleasant most of the time.
Test4Echooo@reddit
I had no idea we could block advertisers..
omgkelwtf@reddit
You can block the accounts. It's not foolproof but it cuts down on the bullshit. I refuse to pay for premium so anything I can do to reduce ads is fine by me.
Bot_Ring_Hunter@reddit
A lot of people get angry when the sub mutes them back.
Martiantripod@reddit
What's your question? I'm subscribed to over 200 subreddits although many of them are barely even conscious. I don't think I've actively blocked any subreddits but then I'm looking at stuff in my own feed not in popular so it's only if a specific sub gets caught in a wave of posting BS. Usually that dies down pretty quick but I also report posts that are outside the group rules.
Because I'm not looking at popular, stuff like Askreddit or AITA or politics doesn't show up unless I specifically go there. I'm fine with what I have.
KoetheValiant@reddit
I only mute the ones I get banned in
GazelleSubstantial76@reddit
I got my first ban in a community last week and I muted the community. They said my comment made broad generalizations about a religion and that wasn't allowed. Whatever.
Test4Echooo@reddit
I’ve been banned in one community: it was /ThisIsMyLifeMeow, which is what it sounds like ie, if you catch your cat totally resigned to his fate kind of thing. I submitted a pic of my cat who I walked in on sitting in an empty laundry basket like he was in a time-out or something lol. Frankly, it was adorable, but bam..got banned🤷🏻♀️
Test4Echooo@reddit
How many are you banned from😆
Intrepid_Year3765@reddit
That’s why I’ve muted almost all of them
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
I've muted a lot of subs. For a while, after I joined my state and city subs, reddit seemed to think that I just liked states and cities. And more recently, I watched a video from a sub in a foreign language, and reddit seems to think I am a polyglot.
MedsNotIncluded@reddit
I mute every “circlejerk” sub I see..
Honestly, idk why I even see them.. flat earth and tartarian something are the latest additions.. kinda wild out there.. people are seriously messed up lately or idk..
Test4Echooo@reddit
Jesus, “ant people” lol. I thought the flat-Earthers had problems.
ihatepickingnames_@reddit
Man. I miss Art Bell.
tehfrod@reddit
I don't. He encouraged the kind of people who are starting subs like that.
JazzfanRS@reddit (OP)
Is that what this is?
ihatepickingnames_@reddit
No, but this definitely something that you wouldn’t be surprised to hear on his radio show back in the day.
Anxious-Advantage238@reddit
Whaaaaaaat??? They need serious help!
MedsNotIncluded@reddit
That wasn’t even a really good example, when I first heard of these guys I had to check and read about what they believe and what evidence they present.
It started as just occasional photos of historical building in my thread, didn’t think much of it. One day I guess I clicked on one and read the post or something and a wtf moment apparently triggered to check if I was getting what they’re trying to say..
JazzfanRS@reddit (OP)
I scanned thru that. And it looks like some high brow academic anthropology banter. Not something I would mute, but then I wouldn't even click thru to read more.
I mute a sub I don't read and yet too many of their posts show up in a day. I check my subs about twice a day.
I will share I muted several video game related subs this past year . Ya okay everyone is fawning over them. Just too many posts in a 50 post scroll.
TesseractToo@reddit
Nah it's off the rails conspiracy theories about aliens, Nikola Tesla, the ancient land of Tartaria, the Mud Flood, giants, ancient lost civilization that has free electricity and possibly stargates and time travel
https://www.discovermagazine.com/the-sciences/what-is-the-lost-empire-of-tartaria
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartarian_Empire
MedsNotIncluded@reddit
Notre-Dame de Paris is one landmark that conspiracy theorists believe was created by Tartars, not French craftsmen in the 1100s.
This snippet is probably a better example of why I’m not interested in any engagement with these people.
TesseractToo@reddit
I don't engage, just lurk
And no I don't think it's real I just think they are interesting in the Art Bell kind of way but even less than that if that makes sense
MedsNotIncluded@reddit
I’m up for a good story, that stuff just ain’t it..
Kinda like the conspiracy theory version of the b-horror movie Braindead.. to put a certain spin on it..
ImtheDude27@reddit
I mute a whole lot of subs. Life is far too short, and only getting shorter, to allow toxicity in my life. It's not worth it, so I mute.
Miginath@reddit
Reddit keeps adding “suggestions” to my feed and I get so tired of having to mute the crap. I too try and curate my feed as much as possible.
fix_dis@reddit
I'm all about making this experience work for me. I do not come here for political commentary. Even when/if I AGREE with the sentiment/ideology. That's not why I'm here. It's not relaxing. So during the election, when every single subreddit turned into a marketing campaign, I just happily muted them. Even subreddits that typically had NOTHING to do with politics/world news turned into propaganda level hype. MUTE! While some might say I'm sticking my head in the sand and refusing to expand my horizons... YES, exactly. I'm engaging in things I find entertaining. I'm not here to learn new things. That's my choice.
psychocabbage@reddit
I didn't even know muting was an option.
My main ones are small business and real estate so there is always something to read.
FrancinetheP@reddit
Thanks for this. I’m learning so much in this thread about the ways you can customize your Reddit experience. 😂 Block, mute, unsubscribe— I’m not even sure how to do that stuff. I just read what shows up and ignore the things I don’t like— like broadcast tv with commercials when we were kids!
stemandall@reddit
So much of social media is tailored to appeal to our basest human emotions: fear, shock, awe. People are smart creatures and we figured out that to get the most attention we need to post things that appeal to the worst in us. This has created a negative feedback loop where everything is shock and awe and nothing is of lasting value.
For example, where are last week's posts? They are gone into the ether.
MaximumJones@reddit
I have untold numbers of people and subreddits blocked.
I also have my feed locked so that only the few subreddits I have joined show up.
severedsoulmetal@reddit
I need to work on this. I have muted some like AITA. Every time I see that sub I just want to say Yes! You are the asshole for posting this.
gouge2893@reddit
I have 30 or so subreddit I subscribe to. But that's it. I never look at All our any general Reddit. I've found me subreddit via things I've seen in posts where I'm already joined. That's it, no need to mute anything.
BeebsMuhQueen@reddit
Women over 40 pages (you go there thinking you will get some maturity, and you get bitter complaining man haters that brag about it, then simultaneously complain how they don’t get the attention they used to when they were younger. Every other post has to make some jab at men, even if it has nothing to do with men, my husband doesn’t make enough money and took a job risk, my husband is great but I have feelings for one of our mutual friends, dumb soap opera crap, and it makes women my age look terrible. There will also be random Bragging about being older and not caring while complaining about caring. It’s not just their age and men just being shallow, they’d be my exes if I was a dude, too. Women drive me nuts, so I had to talk crap and leave haha.
YOU_WONT_LIKE_IT@reddit
Oddly the Askmen sub seems decent. Lots of women posting. Seems almost dare I say reasonably adult like.
FrancinetheP@reddit
I’m pretty active in that sub. if you scroll past the posts asking “is it true big tits are important?” there is actually a lot of good content— men being honest about things that trouble them and being supported/engaged by other men and some women. I learn a lot from reading it.
JeffTS@reddit
I mute suggested communities regularly. Most often, it's communities of various cities or regions across the US that Reddit believes is similar to the 2 local subreddits that I'm in already.
Reachforthesky777@reddit
I aggressively mute communities and individual users. I don't see a problem with that.
doctor_hyphen@reddit
Reddit won’t leave you alone. It will keep pushing garbage into your nice peaceful feed if you don’t prune it, just to create engagement. Keeping the slop out has nothing to do with being a curmudgeon.
Careless-Ability-748@reddit
I mute topics because I don't care about them and don't see any problem with that.
VolupVeVa@reddit
I get exposed to so much annoying junk and garbage and irritation all day everyday both online and off, without any choice or ability to avoid it. You bet that if I can curate my online experience to be less stressful and confrontational I'm going to do it.
Vospire34@reddit
All over muting communities. I get a lot from r/(some city in the US) that just do not apply to me. Like why would you recommend Austin sub-reddit to me?
7LeagueBoots@reddit
I have a lot of subs in my feed, but they’re heavily curated, and I never bother looking at the ‘popular’ feed.
Ok-Heart375@reddit
I've found many mainstream feeds to be misogynistic and ableist. I will block any feed that sneaks in with this type of content.
Wanderlustwednesday@reddit
Some have real boomer energy, including more often than not, this one.
Dede0821@reddit
Well, Tbf we are getting up there. My grandma would say “long in the tooth”, lol
Dede0821@reddit
I mute any sub where people post pictures of themselves asking for opinions about THEMSELVES. Why are they asking for validation from complete strangers?
SunshineInDetroit@reddit
I don't mute anymore because being able to see what's popular on the periphery lets me know what my kids are being exposed to and gives me conversation points if they come up.
loony-cat@reddit
I've muted lots of subreddits because they were annoying, too frequent, about stuff that I wasn't interested in (looking at all of you, reality shows), and anything depressing.
FeistyLoquat@reddit
I mute about 15 communities a day it's kind of my hobby now
phoneguyfl@reddit
Yep, I've muted far more than I have joined. If I have zero desire to engage and know it I'll mute them right away so I don't have it cluttering my feed. Other times if I get comments shadow deleted for obvious partisan reasons (i.e. the mods are heavily curating the reddit to fit their views) I mute and move on as well.
therelybare5@reddit
In my account settings, I’ve turned off “Enable Home Feed Recommendations” and now I only see the subreddits I subscribe to. My home feed can get chaotic but that’s due to some of the subreddits.
txa1265@reddit
My mute and block trigger fingers are quick to go at this point. As others have said, it is about improving the signal to noise.
mpete76@reddit
I’m here mostly to filter the noise from the world. This Subreddit, some heavy metals subs are general go to’s. I find the AIO, or AITA and the like subs funny to read from time to time. And I’m a Atheist so I find community in the Athiest subs. If there is an individual Redditor getting out of hand, I just block them. You’re not being a curmudgeon, you’re being judicious with who is worthy of your time and attention, that’s wise if you ask me.
Mugwumps_has_spoken@reddit
Agree with many others here. It isn't about being a curmudgeon. It's about the fact I left Facebook over 5 years ago because I was tired of the political BS. I was tired of the games. I'll stick to the simpler side of things on Reddit, and the anonymity. I deliberately abandoned my old account because my username was too obvious. This time I am staying more anonymous (yes I know it isn't 100%, I'm GenX, I know enough tech)
otherwise_data@reddit
i have always enjoyed the control i have on reddit to block and mute.
GenWRXr@reddit
I flag every crybaby’s comments including my own city sub mods posts with “self harm/suicide” content so that Reddit sends their inbox self help suggestions.
Musicman1972@reddit
It's nothing new and you're not narrow minded It's just you have a way to have an inner view on what topics the younger crowd want to discuss, and how, that previous generations didn't.
It's like if every trip out to the lake we took on our BMXs in 1984 had an open invite to 55 year olds to come along and listen to what we yapped on about.
They wouldn't have GAF about what we were talking about and would have left.
We can also do that here; as you do by curating your feed.
There's no need to turn up at the lake a week later and shake your head that pop music isn't what it used to be.
Azerafael@reddit
Be free to mute whatever you want. You've lived long enough to have earned the right to go, "f@ck that noise. Don't need it".
For some strange reason my feed was full of anime. Nothing against anime but one can only take that much of humans drooling over 2d drawings. I've muted any and every anime sub i come across.
I find myself more at peace watching funny pics/videos of cats and dogs. And space, my god but some of the pics and videos of space are just incredible.
Woodythdog@reddit
I have muted subreddits , I have also blocked users not for doing anything outrageous just for karma farming stupid comments
therealgookachu@reddit
I rarely go on the front page. But, I join a lot of subs. I have a lot of varied interests: video games, knitting, crochet, spinning, audio dramas, rockhounding, lapidary, science fiction, horror, writing, etc. There’s usually a sub for even the most niche interest.
she_slithers_slyly@reddit
I've probably muted as many as I've been blocked from for my unpopular opinion. I laugh - these young twats can barely wipe their asses and they're moderating subs based on their kindergarten-level insecurities.
percydaman@reddit
I've muted any and all subreddits that only let "approved" persons comment. That's fucking dumb. Between mods and the downvote system, there's so satisfactory cause for it.
Taurusmoon66@reddit
I like to listen (read actually) and add to a conversation not dominate or be dominated. It’s about easy fun, we deal with too much in real life to let ourselves be affected. As a vintage X, I remember what it was like before the world was deeply digitized. Now everyone has something to say, just need to know what to shut out. Scary when You look at where we came from in such a short period. That’s why I only have a Reddit account everything else is just noise and nonsense to me.
windmill-tilting@reddit
I feel like an alien in popular at times. Keep in mind though, those are the subs that want to be seen. I tend to drift into political, comedy, animal, and Fandom subs, but also mute political comedy and Fandom subs. It's tough to hear and see the "all" of the world.
Extension-Elk-1274@reddit
I mute communities. I block users.
I am also a curmudgeon, got a fukkin problem with that?
Revolutionary-Fan235@reddit
I have muted dozens of subreddits. It started out as a way to avoid political content. Then I just muted things like car brands that I don't own.
areporotastenet@reddit
Worry not you are not alone. I mute most of the subreddits that are offered to me. There’s just tons of bad ideas out there and viewing them hurts my brain.
JimboFett87@reddit
I mute a ton, especially ones that the Reddit algo thinks I want because I may have looked at one post one time.
I still am a member of a ton, but I'm constantly muting.
nofreelaunch@reddit
I block 99% of Reddit. All political subs, all memes, all fake story subs, and many more. Just stuff that interests me in my feed.
GenXer19_7T@reddit
Nothing wrong with knowing what you like and what you don’t. The Internet is full of garbage and manipulative algorithms that are trying to hijack your attention. Strong boundaries are critical for maintaining your sanity.
bobj33@reddit
Use old.reddit.com and install RES Reddit Enhancement Suite plugin for for firefox or chrome.
I have blocked literally hundreds of subreddits that show up on popular or all that I don't care about at all. I have added in another 50 keywords of subjects or people that I don't care about.
Goddamitdonut@reddit
Holy shit not to be “generational” and all… but the number of anxiety ridden young people who go to social media is astounding! Like they dont have ANY friends to talk about shit to? (Looking at you ‘self’)
YouMustBeJoking888@reddit
Yeah, I get exhausted reading all these people who are floored by what seems to me normal life shit. And the way some cut people off over minor things is astounding. I can't imagine going through life looking for things to get upset about or where I can angle in some victimization.
YOU_WONT_LIKE_IT@reddit
Adding the apparent need for validation from Internet strangers and virtue signaling.
Goddamitdonut@reddit
They are truly fucked if this is really how they think
mehitabel_4724@reddit
Specific to Gen X concerns, I muted the menopause sub because it was an endless feed of people talking about how miserable they are. I’m not saying perimenopause is fun, but neither is reading constant complaints.
Throttlechopper@reddit
I like Reddit for this very reason, filtering out noise or drama and tailoring my experience is what makes it superior. Now if I could get less suggested communities and ads that have nothing to do with my interests, it would be ideal.
dundundun411@reddit
Muted over 100 so far. Don't care for things that don't interest me.
january1977@reddit
I’m disobeying your rule and naming it. The Kardashians. I do. not. care. who they are or what they’re doing. Reddit, I do not want the nonsense.
DisasterTraining5861@reddit
I’ve only muted one so far and it’s a sub dedicated to shaming people over their eyebrows. We have enough hate in the world already and don’t need to be publicly shaming people for something that trivial. Of course worse is the potential impact on real people who did nothing wrong.
Purple_Pansy_Orange@reddit
My social media is specifically not to be social, it’s to find the content/suppor I want/need as quickly as possible and leave. I get tired of drama online even quicker than I do irl.
EvolutionaryLens@reddit
I am laughing out loud to myself sitting at a cafe reading this post. TY OP🤙
OGWeedKiller@reddit
Thanks, didn't know you had to click the sub to mute, shame it isn't a choice from the page...anyway no more NBA, Formula 1, anime and games I'll neer care about
PR0PH3T0FRAGE@reddit
I’ve muted so many that it seems like Reddit won’t let me mute anymore. I keep seeing subreddits that I have muted multiple times. And to this day I still don’t know what “circlejerk” means. I could google it but oh well whatever nevermind.
Allgyet560@reddit
I used several accounts, each for a different purpose. I have one for general reddit browsing, one got hobbies, and one strictly for my home state. I mute subs to tailor each .
Beautiful_Rhubarb@reddit
I’ve muted a few that no matter what I say people argue and downvote me lol. I know I’m right (tongue in cheek) I don’t need that immature bullshit. Idk why someone would downvote a literal personal experience with no judgement contained but there are some subreddits….
Alltheprettydresses@reddit
I have plenty muted. I'm permabanned from one because I don't tolerate attacks on anyone's culture or spiritual preferences. I've blocked many people for the same reasons and recently blocked someone who was spiraling out, refused professional help, and their issues started making me feel bad. I also block anyone who comments back to me like a jackass. I don't accept DMs.
Getting curated with my social media feed, here, FB and IG, helps keep my peace.
CatchGlum2474@reddit
I mute groups about music that start banging on about ‘classic music rock’. I don’t need that wallpaper.
Street-Technology-93@reddit
Haha! Love it. You asked if you were curmudgeonly and got a bunch of likeminded responses from us saying you are but we are too so…yay GenX?!?
jillycoppercorn16@reddit
I've only muted petfree. I don't know how they ended up on my feed, but they are a disturbing bunch of people.
Anxious-Advantage238@reddit
I'm about to mute where I live someone has let the wrong ppl in and I think I live in a different place with the same name
Anxious-Advantage238@reddit
Whaaaaaaat??? They need serious help
snap802@reddit
I think it's perfectly reasonable. The older I get the less time I have for stuff that doesn't interest me.
The problem with the internet is that it can be a firehose of information. Nothing wrong with curating your experience.
Anxious-Advantage238@reddit
THAT! You understand why I'm not on every other form of social media
Effective_Coach7334@reddit
I'll mute certain communities simply because their pervasive attitudes and ignorance get up my nose. And I make liberal use of the block feature for unproductive personalities. It's just better if I'm not tempted. But there's also something to be said about developing restraint rather than intolerance. It's a balance.
Effective_Coach7334@reddit
I'll mute certain communities simply because I'd get baited into arguments, or their pervasive attitudes get up my nose. It's just best not to look.
Majestic-Reception-2@reddit
I have muted over 40 so far ...
LastRedshirt@reddit
I mostly mute fake feelgood-video-subreddits with cheap tiktok-style videos.
Mission_Pirate2549@reddit
I never mute anything. I use Reddit to remind myself that I don't give a fuck what anyone on the internet thinks. It helps to keep me from getting quite so angry at the bollocks that the various news outlets produce.
AquaLimeFresca@reddit
Between Reddit and YouTube, I block, mute and “don’t recommend this channel” more than I follow, upvote, subscribe or like. I left every other platform 2 years ago and YouTube is next on my list.
Titles and thumbs are bloated clickbait.
Tell me “the last one will shock you” or “wait til the end” and I’m gone.
Start your video with a long self-indulgent intro that demands “but first, like and subscribe” and I’m gone.
Then there’s the classic “I got fired/grounded/beat up/bullied” for this. Cool. I’m gone.
Finally, my favorite to hate: “my DMs are blowing up asking…and I’m finally giving the public what they want.” Yeah ok. You have 126 followers and 4 likes but your DMs are blowing up requesting content? Please.
Now it’s Reddit AI or fake stories written by amateurs who don’t know when to quit with the absurd details.
Reddit will be the last to go, but it’s not far off from happening.
Myeloman@reddit
I’m the same way. For me, it’s about limiting my time here so I’m less likely to get carried away. I come here to seek information, inspiration, or share my knowledge on topics I’m interested in. It’s all too easy to get lost in the doomscrolling on every social media platform, and in fact they do it by design.
If someone could tell me how to mute “Sports”, that’d be great. Nothing against sports, I’m just not sporty and have never been interested in sports. I can’t seem to mute the subreddit itself, only block accounts that post under it.
flicman@reddit
I never look at anything other than Latest, so I have no cause to mute anything.
JazzfanRS@reddit (OP)
I honestly never tried that. I will though
cricket_bacon@reddit
You are definitely not alone.
Ok-Editor1747@reddit
I’m Gen X. WTF, these moms have groups on raising kids. How hard it is boo hoo. We were raised act righ. If you didn’t an ass whipping was coming. Our generation didn’t have all of this shit. We didnt have the violence and we respected our parents. We also aren’t entitled. You’re thirsty while playing outside, drink out of somebody’s hose.
GrannyLuGoat@reddit
Yep I mute the annoying ones that come up on my feed. Fuck that noise!
The world is annoying enough and can’t mute out in the real world but if I could, I would!!
Natural_King2704@reddit
Yeah, I have muted a few. We can only take so much
