I think the allure of the Addams Family, for me, was the subtlety of the characters overall.

The main characters of the Munsters were all based on well known creatures, so they could be mentally categorized by the viewer. You had Frankensteins Monster (Herman), Bride of Dracula (Lily), Dracula (Grandpa) and the werewolf (Eddie). And the characters were a little bit more "campy" than actually creepy.

There was a more subtle and uncategorizable weirdness to the Addams family, Cousin It and Thing not withstanding. And just a hint of cultured sophistication to Gomez and Morticia specifically. Morticia speaking French and Gomez indulging in fine cigars and being experienced in things like chess and fencing and their overall demeanor were just different from Herman Munster's giggly and almost gooberish mannerisms. And Wednesday's stone cold morbidity lent something completely next level to the character.

The Munsters were just weird, but the only thing keeping the Addams' from being full blown unsettling and creepy AF was the humor elements.

I think that is why I love the Munsters so much now. Because Herman is just so freaking sweet. His personality is the polar opposite of his appearance. He is a giant goober.

That's not to say I don't love Wednesday. But the TV show Wednesday is soooo young compared to the movies.

But here is a thought for you. My husband and I have been watching both of these lately because they beat the hell out of most daytime TV.

At the time each family was considered extremely weird. The communities were shocked and appalled by them.

What would it take for a modern family to be that unusual?

When I was younger (under 12 yo), it was Munsters. Once I hit puberty, it was all Addams Family - Morticia was a literal smoke show. The Munsters' show formula was pretty much 1-note; while AF offered much more nuance and variety (plus it had the better supporting cast - Uncle Fester, Cousin It, Thing, Lurch...)
