[Brodie Robertson] Hyprland Premium Is Not What It Seems

TLDR: Hyprland Premium is little more than a standard donation-for-mention sponsorship, not a proprietary edition of Hyprland as some assumed.

Elites don't want you to know this,
but the Hyprland on the internet is free,
you can take it home.
I have 458 Hyprlands.

I am guilty of that myself. I always get the newest model every time, even if the old one is still working perfectly fine...

God I hate non-technical Linux influencers.
Business_Reindeer910@reddit
I've seen a few of his videos and he seems technical enough to me.
on_a_quest_for_glory@reddit
he is useful for shining light on issues, but he's doesn't seem very technical. I don't blame him because pumping out videos is a full time job
Business_Reindeer910@reddit
how does he "not seem very technical"? I've been using linux for over 20 years (for desktop and server stuff) and following the development of the OS at the lower levels for nearly as long. He sure seems technical enough to me.

He reads articles someone else prepares for him, just like every other tech influencer.
Business_Reindeer910@reddit
gotta wonder who is/was doing that for free, considering he didn't have enough followers to monetize the channel until pretty recently.
79215185-1feb-44c6@reddit
They aren't doing it for free. Even very small tech tubers have paid writers.
ThomasterXXL@reddit
The writer is ChatGPT. It can turn any online beef halfway into a script and it explains the acronyms and everything!
Business_Reindeer910@reddit
Do you have any proof of that?
ThomasterXXL@reddit
The absense of evidence is not the evidence of absense...
I plead the fifth, I PLEAD THE FIFTH!!!
Business_Reindeer910@reddit
I'd just suggest not making claims on issues like this you can't back up. Things are easier that way.
ThomasterXXL@reddit
Oh no!
Business_Reindeer910@reddit
that sounds a bit too expensive for the small amount of subscribers at play here.

Nico Loves Linux talks about how he has writers all of the time and has a much smaller following.
Business_Reindeer910@reddit
I'm not concerned about them having writers at all. I was more asking about WHEN they were able to get writers.
They probably had a decent amount of technical knowledge which gave them ANY followers in the first place, before they could hire writers.
Them hiring writers later is no problem at all.

I’m pretty sure Brodie has a BSc in software engineering and has ande 113 contributions to his GitHub projects over the last year.
Are you more technically inclined than that?
79215185-1feb-44c6@reddit
Yes, I'm a Software Architect with 11 years of experience who works in the Cybersecurity industry, while also participating in open source. My specialties are service orchestration and driver development.
ThomasterXXL@reddit
Ah, so you're the guy who takes care of things when Kevin from Accounting's gets the company site DDoS'd by an angry 12 year old renting out a Russian bot farm, because Kevin was playing Counterstrike when he should have been spreading sheets and then forgot to uphold the holy CIA trinity when he started screaming adult-rated expletives in voice chat and somehow had to invoke his employer to prove how adult he is.
iloveboobs66@reddit
I’ve never liked his videos. He may have the expertise to know about this stuff but imo he’s really bad at articulating it.
Traditional_Hat3506@reddit
That's such a nothingburger of credentials.
hearthreddit@reddit
He did some in-depth videos about window managers and terminal applications at the beginning but the thing with Linux youtubers is that they all eventually devolve into clickbaity inflammatory content but that's the nature of the platform i guess.
jr735@reddit
Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can't teach just talk about it, I guess.
sususl1k@reddit
I’m not exactly caught up but why would people assume Hyprland could even get away with making their code proprietary? It’s GPL licensed, right?
Traditional_Hat3506@reddit
Hyprland is BSD3 licensed
Business_Reindeer910@reddit
The copyright holders are free to do whatever they wish. They can make proprietary versions just fine. This is why Canonical makes you sign a CLA.
grem75@reddit
So it is exactly what it seems?
HaterAnon@reddit
where would linux be without the constant clickbaiting and unnecessary drama slop? Someone's gotta make money out of this and it's gotta be the human TTS.
