I just turned 47 today. I still get a card each year from my parents with a check inside. It’s one of the few things that makes me feel young.

Any fellow GenXers here still receive money from their parents on their birthday?
Puzzled_Tomatillo528@reddit
Happy birthday. Should make you feel loved, too. After the age of 18, I just got a happy birthday.. of course, my mom had to remind my dad it was my birthday. Hehe. RIP Mom and Dad.
LlamaFreeze@reddit
Both of my parents gave me cards with checks for my birthdays and Christmas, always with a little note that it was just for me, and that I shouldn't spend it on the kids or something practical. I'm a single mom and they both knew that it was one of the few little splurges that I would get during the year. They weren't huge, but enough that I could treat myself to something that I normally wouldn't.
I lost both of them within the last few years and I miss those cards and them checking in on me to see if I followed their instructions, and how I spent the money.
missblissful70@reddit
I am 54. I lost my parents in 2018 (Dad) and 2024 (Mom). I miss the things Mom used to send me in the mail!
Maleficent_Theory818@reddit
I lost my mom in 2022. She was the last person to send me a card on my birthday. This year was really hard.
RedwoodsareAwesome@reddit
I'm so sorry.
Realistic-Talk-6857@reddit
I feel for you. I'm sorry. Totally know what youre going through.
newpthankstho@reddit
The third year is the worst. Not sure why. I am sorry. I have been there.
RunTimeExcptionalism@reddit
I'm a Millennial who's seeing this because the thread got popular, but my dad is getting up there in age, and it's going to wreck me when I get my last card from him. idk, maybe us olds should start a thing where we send cards to each other.
chihuahua2023@reddit
I love sending cards to my friends randomly and for birthdays- it’s better than text :)
Contralogic@reddit
This hit my feelz. Wish you well compadre.
ChristianMom35@reddit
I'm so sorry for your loss.
RedwoodsareAwesome@reddit
I'm sorry. May their memories be blessings.
RollTideMeg@reddit
I've kept all the cards my parents have sent over the past 15 years... In case it's the last one...
AWlkingContradction@reddit
Same. Sad that I did indeed get the last one from my Grandma who had dementia a few years ago. My Mom said they had such a hard time getting her to sign it because she didn’t know what it was for or what was going on. 😢
RollTideMeg@reddit
I'm so sorry. Dad has started signing the cards when Mom always did until about 4 years ago. It's hard.
Anna_Lemming@reddit
I love sending cards and other mail. If you'd like any, lmk! Happy to send it to a non-personal address too. Lost my parents very, very young.
My friends think I'm nuts for enjoying the act of sending snail mail and packages. But I love to do it.
what-isthis123@reddit
I lost my parents 5 and 3 years ago. My mom would always give me money for my birthday. I had always told her not to, but after a few years I just took it. She was just being mom! I really miss them!🥲

Same. I lost my dad a few years ago and my Mom three weeks before my 50th birthday. birthday celebrations will never be the same.
mtlaw13@reddit
Same story here :( Lost Mom during Covid '21 and Dad in '10.
xxshilar@reddit
I was almost the complete opposite. Mom in '10, Dad in '22. Also lost all of his brothers and sister. Never have I felt more alone as I approach 50.
missblissful70@reddit
I have eight siblings. I am the youngest one. My brother has Stage 4 cancer, and I dread the day we bury my brothers and sisters. I know I will feel very alone then.
333pickup@reddit
I had many aunts and uncles...21 of them. All of them gone now along with my parents. I have aiblings amd when I get together with them like I used to het together with my extended family there is a ghostly feeling to that. All the people who belonhed to us no longer with us.
momstera@reddit
I turned 57 on Wednesday. I missed all my mom's homemade cards. I still have a stack of them in my home office.
ijie_@reddit
Lost my dad when I was 20 years old. I would do anything to be able to hug him again. That’s when I learned to tell my mom and sis I love them, every single day.
pauliep13@reddit
I was 20 when my mom died, 21 when my dad died. I feel ya.
Zestyprotein@reddit
My 10 year old gets newspaper clippings from my mom about every other week in the mail. Along with ones for me. And my wife.
RedwoodsareAwesome@reddit
48, my mom still makes a deal out of my sibling and I's birthdays, and her daughters in laws. She's in her mid 70s...has done this every year of our lives. I'm married, raising a family of my own, check all the responsible adult boxes, but still get excited about my birthday because of my Mom. Starting to get a little emotional about it.
AWlkingContradction@reddit
Mine still do, and although it's unnecessary at 44 I appreciate that they do.
The best part now though is being the gift giver myself. I enjoy being able to spend more on them now and give them something useful or special that they can appreciate.
That and because I'm childfree and no one can get revenge on me, I get to buy the loudest most annoying toys possible for my brother's kids and all of my 1st cousin's children. Best part of Christmas!
Musicman1972@reddit
That's so nice. My friend's parents still buy her a coat every few years at Christmas. Just to make sure she's warm in winter.
She's 48.
PM_YOUR__BUBBLE_BUTT@reddit
My mom still buys me slippers for Christmas every single year. Started when I was 4. Lots of fun ones when you’re little. Then they became more “grown up” ones for a while there. Now I’m in my 30s and a few years ago I dropped hints to her about some really silly ones. She loves the tradition even more now I think, and so do I. Monster paw slippers? Hell yea. Cow slippers? Mooooove over monster paws. Taco slippers? Yum, yes please.
It’s the greatest tradition and I’ve 100% started the same one with my daughter now. I’m gonna be really sad when my mom isn’t around anymore. For this and 1000 other reasons of course.
AWlkingContradction@reddit
I LOVE THIS. 100 times more fun than "Grandma knits me socks every year" and a fun tradition at the same time.
grateful_john@reddit
My father passed away last year. He had a thing for buying leather jackets - he would get one every three years, it seemed. He’d offer me his old one (by offer, I mean he would insist I take it). A few weeks after he passed we were at my mother’s, she offered my son and I each a leather jacket - he had two in his possession when he died.
They’re damn nice jackets.
stillfather@reddit
My mother in law sends a check. Actual parents...will probably text.
Not_A_Beet@reddit
Awww that is so sweet. My mother just insists I pick something out for her to buy online to have delivered to me. I can’t remember the last time she chose a present for me.
Fantastic_Estate_303@reddit
My grandma used to send me kiddy birthday cards even when I was in my 30s. She just added in the last digit. I miss her
ClassroomFine6530@reddit
Happy Birthday! So happy you are surrounded by love☺️
Realistic-Talk-6857@reddit
Yep. Mom still hands me cash.
Better_Days_56@reddit
My mom used to make hand drawn and painted cards for every birthday and also Christmas and Valentine’s Day. Her dementia became obvious to me when the individual birthday cards stopped about 10 years ago. This year the others stopped because her mind is so confused. 😢. My father was never a big gift giver so now we do all their gifts for them.
Malapple@reddit
My parents never really did this but my grandparents did, despite me making a great living and them being on a limited income. I actually started saving them until my grandmother told me it was screwing up balancing her checkbook. I still have one from each of them in the desk drawer right next to me. They passed 20+ years ago.
mooch41@reddit
My mother did the same till she died
dataarchivist@reddit
Happy birthday! I’m 52 and would get a check, too, till my Mom passed. Turns out my Mom was the card/check instigator.
Liitlewinemakerme@reddit
Aw that’s sweet.
Secret_Computer4891@reddit
My dad still send me a $20 bill in the mail, as he has every year since I was 9 or 10.
sharalasmyles@reddit
Just turned 55 last month and got a card in the mail with a check from my parents. I told them it was not necessary to send me money anymore but they insisted so who am I to tell my parents in their 80's what to do with their money?
Brilliant_Chance_874@reddit
❤️ for everyone who loves their parents
hermitzen@reddit
61 and despite me telling Mom to stop sending me money, she still puts cash in with the cards. At least she doesn't write a check equivalent to my age anymore!
Significant_Ruin4870@reddit
I'm turning 60 soon and my mother still does this. She was sending me checks, which I refused to cash because she shouldn't be spending her retirement money on me. So now she just sends me cash. SMH
justlkin@reddit
My MIL used to send us checks, which we wouldn't cash because we kept telling her to save her money and use it for something fun. We'll, she just resorted to putting cash in our cards now, so...
My SO plays the game now of slipping the money in her purse when she's not looking. She's caught onto that too now and checks it before leaving our house. 🤣
steveoa3d@reddit
My dad always did that, $1 for each year…
ridbax@reddit
Mine too! I joked with him that we were heading into big money once I cracked $50. I miss this annual ritual and the two way ribbing about it.
matt_heming@reddit
My uncle has sent me a cheque with my birthday age my whole life, and I love it every year. I'm 51
longtimemt012@reddit
My husband's parents would send $100 and cents corresponding with his age 😆 (a check)
OnlyGuestsMusic@reddit
My parents started sending me Omaha Steaks.
CyrusTheVirus76@reddit
My parents have upped the christmas and birthday gifts to 500$ to disperse their wealth without tax!
ECNV1978@reddit
I’m the same age (47) and any time my dad sees me he slips me a $100 bill. He says that w girl “girl should always have a little fun money at her disposal.” It’s super sweet.
annnamal@reddit
47 too. Everytime I go on vacation my dad gives me spending money. Every birthday I get cash in a card from my parents.
slickmartini@reddit
My dad does that too. Will never get tired of hearing that. 💕
Tasty-Building-3887@reddit
My dad did that for me when I was younger. He died when I was 21.
slickmartini@reddit
I’m so sorry to hear he passed away when you were so young.

I still have the last $25 uncashed check my mom sent me for my birthday before she passed in 2014! Love you, Mom. 💕
ksh1elds555@reddit
You are so lucky! Mine both died when I was in my 30’s. What I wouldn’t give for one more birthday card 😢.

Yep, early X’er here - my dad passed a few years ago, mom is now in her mid-80’s. She still has the most beautiful cursive writing ever - writes a personal note in the birthday cards and insists on providing a thoughtful cash gift. She also just became a great-grandma and is excited to celebrate yet another birthday!
Beth_Pleasant@reddit
Hello fellow '78-er! Yes I still get a card with $100 check in it :)
ThermiteSnake@reddit
I turned 49 this year and it was the first time I didn't get either cash, check or a PayPal. It took me ten years to convince them they didn't have to do that anymore, lol. I still get got a card and that always makes me feel like I am still a kid in their eyes.
MasterAlchemi@reddit
My mom openly said she’s not going to bother remembering my birthday which explains why she hasn’t for the last few years.
There was hell to pay when I didn’t call her soon enough on Mothers Day though.
Competitive-Feed-294@reddit
That’s awesome they remember your birthday. 👍
snootchiebootchie94@reddit
That is nice and so thoughtful! My mom always gets me something for my birthday. She has always been very thoughtful. Currently on her second battle with breast cancer. My father died around 15 years ago. I miss him a lot and wish he could have been alive to meet his grandchildren. Appreciate your parents homie!
BuckyGoldman@reddit
55 here, and my Parents (now just Mom) still puts a check in the birthday cards for myself and my older brother. Also, on Christmas she still fills the stockings with candy and ~~penny~~ toys.

55 here and still get a check from my Mom for my birthday (Dad passed a few years ago). I've kept the last twelve years' worth.

Same and my mom still makes my favorite cake. I know there are only a few of those left so I savor every one.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Yep. I get German chocolate cake every year for my birthday. I get to eat is all my self because my wife hates coconut.
Then mom started making her a cake on my birthday as well since she didn't like coconut. I wonder who the favorite is?
LincolnhamLincoln@reddit
I think we know. :)
siamesecat1935@reddit
My mom made my cake until I graduated from college! She'd bake it and MAIL it to me there! I have the recipe, but it never tastes the same as when she made it.

My 89 year old mother had my brother (with whom she lives) Venmo me money for my 48th birthday.

I’m in my 50s and live in NZ. My parents still call from the UK and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ (with guitar accompaniment) over the phone.
grateful_john@reddit
My wife’s parents call her and sing happy birthday every year. No guitar.
Zestyprotein@reddit
Mine call and sing, but always do it the day before, because they never get my birth date right. I'm 53.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
My wife gets a check form her grand mother for Christmas. It is split between her brother and sister. The check is for $83.33. That is $250 split 3 ways. it makes me chuckle every time. I even asked her can't you just round it one way or the other. She simply said no its the way I do things.
NespressoForever@reddit
My in-laws do that for us each year. We're both in our 50's. It's always appreciated.
siamesecat1935@reddit
I did, up until last year. We knew my mom was going to be applying for Medicaid as she was rapidly running out of money. And even a $10 check would raise red flags! So instead, because its about a 20 mile drive each way to her, she paid for me to fill up my car a few times here and there. Using her credit card. :)
stromm@reddit
My dad and I would pass the same check back and forth for each of our birthdays. Started on my 21st when he gave me a $25.00 check. We kept changing the name and date. Did that for 20 years. He passed away a week after I gifted it back to him.
And my brother (executor) refused to give it back to me...
No_Future_9@reddit
I'm 46 and my mother and stepfather come to visit every birthday. They are about 450 miles away but they always make the drive. My birthday falls around Christmas so they would come to celebrate with my daughter and I. This past Christmas will most likely be the last time they do it. My stepfather's health isn't that great so traveling may be tough on him. He did make it out for my daughter's graduation which I was thankful for. Now my plan is to go spend at least my birthday at my mom's house. Maybe Christmas too depending on what my daughter is doing.
My father always flies in for Father's Day weekend. Its a great tradition we have had. If I regret anything in life, it is not living close to him.
CrustyBatchOfNature@reddit
I stopped getting more than a birthday call around 20 or so. I have struggled with how to tone down what my kids get each year. I still wind up spending $900-1000 on the three of them for Christmas. This year they all turn between 27 and 30 so yeah.... With my first grandchild on the way, it may be time to at least scale it back some.
angry_old_dude@reddit
That's cool. Every year for my birthday I get a religious card from my Dad where a Mass will be said for me. I'm not particularly Catholic anymore, but it makes my Dad happy. The best part, though, is there's always a personal note in it. That part makes me happy.
sleebus_jones@reddit

Yes, I get xmas money and birthday money. I look forward to it!
"Now you can pay your power bill. That's a gift". - my dad
sunsetpoe@reddit
Both my parents have passed. I did inherit an IRA from my mom. I’m required to take out a “minimum required distribution” each year (MRD). I have it programmed to pay out on my birthday, so each year my mom does still give me a check for my birthday.
Conspiracy_Thinktank@reddit
I get coffee money and I love it. As a father and husband I rarely get any cash to myself so it’s nice to have some treat yo self cash.
cavis304@reddit
I went back to school at 50 years old to get my master’s degree. When I got my first grade (an A), my Mom gave me $20 in a card just like she did for my kids when they were in school. She passed away last year before I finished my degree. She’s still the first person I want to tell, but she’s not here anymore.

I can’t imagine my mom who is on social security sending me $. Also sending $ to my kid(he makes more than I do!)
We usually do fun things together instead.
penguin_stomper@reddit
Glad I'm not the only one. I also get a "care package" of snacks.
I do wonder about Mom's mental state sometimes, she's always had a somewhat naive, idealistic view of things, and I sometimes can't be sure if it's a Mom thing or if she actually thinks I still like like a college kid in the dorm.
ThirstyWolfSpider@reddit
My parents backed off on that when I kept failing to deposit the checks.
They still send them occasionally, at which point they sit on my desk "to be deposited soon" until they mention that they'd really like to be able to balance their checkbook.
misdeliveredham@reddit
I’d be the same way if checks were under like $50!
wetwater@reddit
I'm 51, and same. I send similar amounts back on their birthdays and about a decade ago I realized they send me $100 and I send them $50 each, so it's a wash. I figured we could skip the money part and mentioned it to my mother.
"Oh! I'm fine with that, but you should still send money to your father."
And when I spoke to him, he told me that was fine but I should still send her the $50.
So twice a year I send them money because otherwise it's going to be nagging that I didn't send money from one that I didn't send money to the other.
misdeliveredham@reddit
Start sending them $25 each and come out ahead! JK
jollytoes@reddit
My parents are Jehovah's Witness and don't celebrate the birthdays. For whatever reason they started calling me on my birthday and literally singing the Happy Bday song about ten years ago and every year since. I went a whole childhood without a single bday being recognized and now I get a song. If they live another 20yrs I may get a gift. (To add context to how strange this is for me, I exchange maybe 10 texts and 2-3 phone calls/yr with my parents.)
misdeliveredham@reddit
I used to know a lot of JW families back in the day and always felt bad for the kids. Wonderful people though, at least to us who weren’t part of the, ahem, their circle. My parents are/were weird in other ways so I feel ya.

I love this. and happy birthday
thegreatgatsB70@reddit
My favorite memory of my mother is how she would wake me up singing, or start singing when she/I would call me/her on my birthday. When her dementia advanced and she lost her memory, it was the saddest birthday that I ever had. She didn't sing. I have done the same tradition with my daughter, and my wife gets my mother to sing happy birthday to her, and me. It's a great feeling.
NegScenePts@reddit
52M here...and if it's not a card it's a sly hundy palmed to me when my wife isn't looking, lol.
kaos95@reddit
I'm supporting my parents, my dad has alzheimers and no way on their state worker pension could my mom pay for the care he needs (I won 3 lottery with none of them actually being the lottery, but I used up all the luck in my family for the next 17 generations . . . so I take care of my people).
My mom still does buy me really neat presents for my birthday, but then again, they live kitty corner around the block from me (our backyards almost touch).
turbojack6@reddit
Yes and Christmas too, of course there is always something to unwrap, sweater, shirts, pans etc. It’s the $15,000 check that is the bow on those presents. Thank you Mom & Dad

NoorAnomaly@reddit
My mum sends me money for my birthday still. And my kids.
About 3 years ago, when I got my fancy new job, I wanted to do something for her. So I bought her the closest she'd been eyeing, together with some table lights. Paid for delivery (we're on different continents), which was about the same as the items purchased due to how far away she lives from the store. The outrage and appreciation when she called me was amazing. 💕 I miss my mum...

My dad used to do that. He also sent birthday money to my girlfriend and to my roommate, who had a bad relationship with her mom. I miss that man every day.

I'm 53. Both my parents are gone. Both of them were born in 1928. Mom died in 2016. Dad died in 2022 (Covid). They always sent money to my daughters for birthday etc. I had been demoted to a birthday phone call since I was 20 something :-)

I tell her constantly that we don't need anything, but she insists.
TheAmazingMaryJane@reddit
my dad used to send me cheques too, he died in 2017. i remember finding 50 dollars in one of my junk drawers on my birthday in 2018, i thought for sure it was sent by my dad, even though i don't believe in an afterlife. it was just so perfect.

fritzie_pup@reddit
I'm not so much into the whole getting money thing for birthdays..
However, since I was a kid and lottery tickets started being a thing, that became the enclosed birthday tradition annually.
Every year (47 now) I still get a card containing lottery tickets (that never, ever win.. Even the big ticket ones).

My parents always gave me $100 plus my age. So $112 when I turned 12, for instance. Dad's been gone three years now and I take care of mom's bills and check writing. She still has me write a check to myself for the birthday amount.
mados123@reddit
Just did recently, and when I saw only my living family member's names on it, I asked my sister to write in the names of my other family members who have passed. Otherwise, it wouldn't have felt right, even though it's reality.

My mom sends me $200 every birthday. The cards ended when I (M47) turned 19. Two of my aunts still mail me comics. They get the bundle packs and send them my way. One of my best friends from high school (F48) coordinates with my wife (F48) and takes me to the arcade on my birthday.
I never looked at it as helping me feel young. It most likely I'm glad they remember and put in work. I do the same for them.
onehundredpetunias@reddit
In true GenX form, it's really a crap shoot as to whether or not they will even remember that it's my birthday from year to year, let alone send a card or check lol.

Same. I’m 56 and just like clockwork, Mom hands me a birthday card with $100 bill in it. I’m sure it was less years ago, and has gone up like inflation. But she never misses. When I was growing up I got a few little gifts from my parents, and my grandparents would send me a dollar for every year I was turning. $15 was the last I got from my grandparents, all of them passed by then. My parents send me cards now with nothing else in them, but my kids who are now 15-21 usually get $50-$100 from my parents(their grandparents) so hey that’s still cool that your parents send you a check with your card. Honestly, I am okay with just getting a card because they spoil the hell out of the grandkids, and that is okay with me!

My wife and I started dating when I was 21 and we got married when I was 27...long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. I got an Easter basket into my 30's from my in-laws. Nope.
