What is something older than you that you watch but didn't age well?

I love watching carry on movies to this day I never know why. Last of the summer wine as watched later episodes with my grandparents (so it's more the memories). Anybody else or just me?
OmniWise@reddit
On The Buses is in the Carry On camp of things that would in no way resonate today.
I dont regularly watch them, but have once or twice over the years.. t.v. shows Rising Damp and anything which had Alf Garnett as a character (e.g. Til Death Us Do Part)
Chad-Buttsniff@reddit
I watched an On the Busses a while ago.
The entire episode revolved around Reg being absolutely furious they have dared to introduce a breathalyser at work and he wasn't allowed to drive a bus drunk. Hijinks ensued when he spent the entire episode hilariously trying to circumvent the breathalyser, because it was outrageous he couldn't drink at work!
I wasn't offended, its absolutely of it's time, but that would absolutely not be made today.....
Johhnymaddog316@reddit
Talking about On the Busses, so many 70's & 80's sitcoms had that weird trope where an unattractive middle aged bloke who you couldn't imagine anyone fancying was somehow a big hit with the ladies (On The Busses and Allo Allo) spring to mind. I have no idea of the rationale behind it. Was it just projection by the screenwriters?
OmniWise@reddit
In particular the character Jack Harper (taller of the two) possibly the least likely ladies man in history. My take maybe wrong in this but I have come to the conclusion that it was supposed to be a joke in itself.
Johhnymaddog316@reddit
Yeah, I remember watching one episode and a female character said to Stan "Ere, I like your mate". I actually burst out laughing.
Onewordcommenting@reddit
It's because women didn't, and still don't, necessarily go for looks in the same way that men do. Character and personality go a long way, as does making people laugh. A confident but less attractive bloke is always going to do better than a shy, boring looker.
Spam_Frittering@reddit
I never 'got' Rising Damp. I love some 70s sitcoms like Porridge and Whatever Happened to The Likely Lads, but that one never resonated.
auntie_climax@reddit
Police squad - still mostly hilarious but definitely offensive nowadays, and a product of its time
highrouleur@reddit
I only found out this week there's a new Naked Gun film coming. With Liam Neeson starring
auntie_climax@reddit
Yeah Seth MacFarlane project is it?
highrouleur@reddit
Apparently, someone at work showed me a very short trailer. No idea what to think about it yet
Dapper-Message-2066@reddit
Bullseye.
_Frog_Enthusiast_@reddit
Brainiac. Dr bunhead in the pub is just sooooo fucking bad
Nimble_Natu177@reddit
Obligatory Doctor Who mention.
sbaldrick33@reddit
You take that back!
Nimble_Natu177@reddit
As a fan of both NuWho and Classic Who, I wish I could. At the very least, Big Finish still kicks ass, even if its too expensive to keep up with.
MrStilton@reddit
You can get a lot of them on Spotify as part of the 15 free hours of audiobooks per month which comes with Premium.
Nimble_Natu177@reddit
I thought it was just the old stuff on Spotify, though I would highly recommend the old stuff, especially anything with the Eighth Doctor, to any disenfranchised Who fans!
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
I recently saw a telly mag in Sainsbury's and the front cover was a special edition celebrating 20 years of Doctor Who.
And that's the problem. This utter shite they call "Doctor Who" has buried the originals.
horridbloke@reddit
I've recently been binge-watching the Tim Baker ones. There's a cool utility called get-iplayer that can download what still survives of classic who with a single command. Needs a fair chunk of hard drive space.
Own_Glove845@reddit
Never heard of Tim.
horridbloke@reddit
He lied and told everyone his name was Tom. Utter mad lad.
pajamakitten@reddit
The show has always been a bit camp and naff though. It is a teatime family show after all.
Own_Glove845@reddit
I only bother with the real Doctor Who 1963-1989 now. They have destroyed a truly wonderful British programme with the modern show. No wonder fans are turning off in droves. I left after Capaldi's run.
el_pieablo@reddit
Still watch Carry On films if I happen to come across one
wheeler1916@reddit
Ooh matron!
Spam_Frittering@reddit
I wish I could laugh like Sid James.
Penster78@reddit
Smokey and the Bandit. Used to love it as a kid, but boy has it not aged well. Some of Jackie Gleason’s lines… yeeeeshh.
Abject-Direction-195@reddit
It's not older then me because I was born in the early 70s but The Young Ones hasn't aged Well and I used to love this
BaldyBaldyBouncer@reddit
Jim'll Fix it
Lumpy_Ad104@reddit
I remember watching him live back in the 80’s, thought he was a creepy bastard back then. But I was a free range kid from the 70’s so you kinda became streetwise to beasts (Scottish term for pedophile).
PraterViolet@reddit
Extraordinary that you always knew Saville was.creepy - I've never read anybody say that online before.
Lumpy_Ad104@reddit
I am well aware that it feels like everyone seems to say that. But I really believe an awful lot of people back then were on to him, he was so brazen about it. Remember no internet back then. I believe in the bbc it was a badly kept secret. He really did have some very powerful friends in politics, nhs and police. Remember he was knighted, which back then was pretty rare.
cari-strat@reddit
I was born in the early 70s and my dad was in the police. He was a very cool dad who really would let me have a go at pretty much anything legal, but the one thing he resolutely opposed me doing was writing to Jim'll Fix It. He literally said just tell me what you want to ask for and I'll try to sort it but you're not going on there. They absolutely believed he was a wrong 'un.
Intelligent_Water_79@reddit
She has a story of how the local pedophile would reach his hand through open bedroom windows at night to grope the girls.
Solution, she gathered all the kids on the street together to throw rocks and sticks at him. He never came back.
The free range days
SoilPleasant4368@reddit (OP)
Worried that you still watch it 😂
BaldyBaldyBouncer@reddit
I throw in the odd episode between Rolf's Cartoon Club binges.
Runaroundheadless@reddit
Still too soon. Probably always will be.
JustPassingShhh@reddit

Apprehensive_Ad4172@reddit
Man about the house, and George and Mildred. I love them, but they have not stood the test of time!
Historical-Car5553@reddit
Think many of the suburban sitcoms have aged poorly. G&M plus Terry and June, Ever DecreasingCircles, Keeping Up Appearances, etc.
Apprehensive_Ad4172@reddit
Ever decreasing circles boiled my piss even as a kid! I wasn’t even in double figures when I watched it, but could not understand why Ann didn’t ditch Martin for the neighbour.
Odd_Championship7286@reddit
I’m rewatching Sex and the City and there’s some really blatant homophobia and transphobia that’s giving me the ick
Opposite-Painting662@reddit
Lumpy I agree didn’t know what it was and it’s paedophile

lubbockin@reddit
carry on is still funnier than the sanitised comedy of now.
this age is the age of snarky wankers who don't even tell jokes in case it offends a blue haired woman.
AdministrativeLaugh2@reddit
You forgot to call everything woke
lubbockin@reddit
Woke.. another trait of wankers.
djashjones@reddit
You forgot snowflakes, plenty of those tossers about too.
lubbockin@reddit
absolutely top wankers.
"you can't watch carry on films .. they have sexual jokes and big breasted girls. "
djashjones@reddit
That's why comedy is dead, taking the piss is offensive. Which is very british.
pajamakitten@reddit
Comedy has got more intelligent than talking about cocks and tits all the time. Carry On films would fail today because people would find the humour dull and infantile.
Fluffy_Juggernaut_@reddit
I-Am-The-Warlus@reddit

looks over to IASIP ... "are you sure?"
thrrowaway4obreasons@reddit
There’s a lot of times I watch things from about 10-15 years ago where the whole schtick is the me character doing something that might be considered feminine and the reaction is to make a big deal out of it. Or they’re considered to be gay or a bit camp and that’s the joke. Literally that they come across as gay. I’m glad we’ve moved past that.
Also friends, I don’t watch it but my girlfriend does. I always remembered watching a few years ago and thinking they were pure garbage, but now even more so.
Big bang theory too, I sort of enjoyed it for a time when it was new. It’s shite, character says something nerdy…hahahahahaha. I think there’s one episode where they’re playing table tennis or something, and they name the tournament after every nerdy tv show they can think. That’s literally the joke, just naming stuff.
Intelligent_Water_79@reddit
The original st Trinians movies. I've been tempted to search for them on YouTube but I think I could possibly get flagged as a pedophile just for searching
Teembeau@reddit
Nah. I watched one recently out of curiosity. There's a very clear line between the younger girls being just troublemakers and the older girls (who really look like adults) are getting up to things with men.
Intelligent_Water_79@reddit
As i recall , the younger girls still hD quite a bit of traditional bawdy humor. Still if not totally outrageous from today's standpoint, I am also curious to revisit. As a primary school kid, I loved it
spanglesandbambi@reddit
Some of the early Top Gears have aged poorly.
Grimdotdotdot@reddit
How dare you! Angela Rippon is timeless!
RevolutionarySelf988@reddit
And by Top Gear you mean Jeremy Clarkson 😂
spanglesandbambi@reddit
And the outfits Hammond is wearing, there's one where he's in a leather trench coat with a wooden bead necklace, lol.
I swear the wardrobe department dressed them all on a basis of dares.
Spam_Frittering@reddit
It was 20 years ago - that uncanny valley between unfashionable old and cool retro. Give it another ten years...
spanglesandbambi@reddit
It's just they are never dressed for the same thing, if they where doing magazine front pages, Hammond is a gay mag, May is Caravan digest, and Clarkson is on the cover of those old people clothes catalogues.
BaldyBaldyBouncer@reddit
Hammond was the king of the bootcut. I dread to think how much pub floor piss was on the bottom of those jeans.
spanglesandbambi@reddit
Hammond is king of the hair dye. Watching them back, there are a few seasons when it is pretty clear he was dying his hair.
BaldyBaldyBouncer@reddit
https://x.com/RichardHammond/status/308312975205351426
Apparently not...
Yeah right 😂
spanglesandbambi@reddit
I mean, it's noticeably darker than not for a few seasons. Floppy haired Hammond is brown, then he goes short, but this miraculously makes his hair jet black.
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
The entire delivery, writing, camerawork was very different back in 2002-2003.
Teembeau@reddit
A lot of Carry On films are bad, and there are aspects that are highly questionable that you have to go "eh it was the past". But there are some really good ones. Cleo is great, Khyber is pretty good.

Noel's House Party. Prime time Saturday night viewing in the 1990s, looking back at it on YouTube now, I don't really see what the fuss was about.
ace_of_bass1@reddit
Maybe I’ll avoid rewatching and let it live in the nostalgia soaked depths of my brain.
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
How Mr Blobby has avoided Operation Yewtree for so long, I'll never know. Someone must have been paid off or killed.
Outrageous_Jury4152@reddit
Tony Blair
r_keel_esq@reddit
Had Tony Blair and Limp Bizkit both retired just after the release of Break Stuff, their legacies of "What If They'd Continued...?" would be incredible.
Instead, we live in the crappy reality with "The Chocolate Starfish and the 2003 Invasion of Iraqč
coalpatch@reddit
You watch Tony Blair?
Portas30k@reddit
Bullseye. Watch it at the end of a nightshift on challenge at 5am. It's brilliant!
Brilliant-Offer-4208@reddit
I’m 101 so there’s nothing older than me that’s on tv
HypedUpJackal@reddit
Dunno about that one… I've seen Henry XIII on there…
Low_Spread9760@reddit
Some Monty Python sketches are outdated in terms of references and sensibilities, but many of the sketches are still hilarious today.
moosebeast@reddit
I think most people know Monty Python through compilations of the best sketches. The actual original broadcast episodes are very hit and miss. The Pythons themselves have said as much.
LadyMirkwood@reddit
I agree with this.
When they were on form, they were brilliant but there's a lot of chaff in there too
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
Yep. Some of the most memorable sketches are really just 1-2 minutes shoved into an episode which is largely garbage.
coalpatch@reddit
The long sections with the castaway on the desert island... what was that about?
Johhnymaddog316@reddit
My parents were big fans but like you say I only really knew it from the most famous sketches which were hilarious to be fair. I ended up going to a Monty Python party in college where we watched several full episodes and so much of it fell flat it was embarrassing. We were glancing awkwardly at each other to see if we were supposed to be laughing.

The Krankies
-SG6000-@reddit
I almost bought a Benny Hill Show compilation VHS from a charity shop the other day because it might have been a fun watch with my elderly parents. Not quite £5 worth of creepy politically incorrect and permanently out-of-print fun though (hence leaving it be).
smushs88@reddit
Recently rewatched Eddie Murphy delirious.
Forgot about the very start with his first joke regarding gay guys. Think Raw also has something similar.
Even as a straight guy I’m like damn. 😬
Eoin_McLove@reddit
God I haven’t watched those for years but I seem to remember a lot of AIDS jokes
HenshinDictionary@reddit
Quite a few Jimmy Saville references in Only Fools and Horses.
There's even an episode of Doctor Who from 1966 where someone says the Doctor looks like him.
Also shout out to the Doctor Who episode where the Doctor says "This is a mad house, it's all full of Arabs".
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
The OFAH seance is my most memorable scene that mentions Savile.
I-Am-The-Warlus@reddit
Would also throw out Jimmy Savile's Tweenies episode as well
Ok-Decision403@reddit
Was that in Pyramids of Mars? It rings a vague bell
Jlaw118@reddit
Couple of years ago I was watching some of Peter Kay’s stand up from the early 2000s and he often sings the theme tune to Jim’ll Fix it. Really didn’t age well
Jumpy-Brilliant-3880@reddit
Yes! CARRY ON films, love them. Not aged well.
el_pieablo@reddit
Love the On The Buses movies. Especially Holiday on the buses
Personal-Listen-4941@reddit
Are You Being Served
All the Pussy jokes/innuendo, the gay jokes, constant sexual harassment, lots of racist & xenophobic jokes & they even do a full black & white minstrel act at one point…
Yet it’s still extremely funny & the first few seasons before the cast changes hold up really well.
Far_Bad_531@reddit
Rising Damp
gr1msh33p3r@reddit
The Goodies. Watched some episodes recently and they just didn't seem funny anymore.
