Can I carry a knife when waking my dog?

There’s loads of bully breeds in my area I feel intimidated by them and seen too many videos I wanted to know if it’s legal to carry a knife for self defense against big dogs? I have a small dog if a shitbull attacks her she won’t stand a chance.
erazor2026@reddit
No you're not allowed to self defend yourself in the UK , that's why tasers and pepper spray which is non legal can't be used against murderers and gangs. The only self defense in the UK allowed is where you basically prove your life was under threat and you found a weapon. We are basically sitting ducks for criminals who don't care and risk for a biscuit guys. Stupid country, stupid laws , stupid government who's been dragging the country down for decades. Literally one of the most powerful countries before barely hanging on and will be a nobody country in the near future lol.

Just possession of a bladed article starts at 18 months imprisonment, on the sentencing guidelines. The lowest possible sentence you can be given is 6 months custodial (4 months with a guilty plea), though this can be suspended for up to 2 years. (Anything 18 months and below can be suspended, as I recall).
Knife laws changed a few years ago and got a lot more strict, especially around sentencing and punishment.
Chemical_Count5054@reddit
No animal abuse is illegal and you will be HOPEFULLY imprisoned and have your dog taken away and banned from keeping animals.
Why are you wanting to stab dogs? You need to see a therapist before you hurt somebody.
Oxycodone_80mg@reddit (OP)
So if a dog attacks mine I’m supposed to just let it happen
Chemical_Count5054@reddit
No. You learn how to safely and effectively remove the dog. You never ever harm an animal no matter what it’s done.
You pull the collar upwards and twist the collar so that the dog gasps for breath and let’s go. Simple, safe and effective.
Oxycodone_80mg@reddit (OP)
Ur so stupid it’s scary, I hope u never own a dog you’d probably let it die u pussy

It's neither legal nor practical. It's unlikely you could take one out with a pocket knife anyway. If you were thinking anything bigger then I'm inclined to be more scared of you than the dogs.
You also don't mention any of them doing anything intimidating other than existing so maybe work on your perception of danger.
Icy_Tip405@reddit
I got a dog spray from amazon
red_black_red0@reddit
What a stupid question.
ThereAndFapAgain2@reddit
You can't carry it for the purpose of self-defence, but you can carry a knife as long as the blade is no longer than 3", and it can't be certain kinds of knife like flip knives and butterfly knives.
I suggest you don't carry a knife, but if you choose to anyway, you should look up the law around it as there are many restrictions on what kind of knife is illegal to carry even if the blade is no longer than 3".
erazor2026@reddit
I don't know why ppl keep recommending a legal knife, he's more likely to cut his own fingers it's a non lock knife means it collapses into your hands if you end up with force on the wrong side, this is purely for cutting objects. Horrible for self defense that's why it's legal.
ThereAndFapAgain2@reddit
I'm not recommending it, I literally said I don't recommend they carry one.
erazor2026@reddit
Yea I understand but came off like an alternative to a regular knife.
ThereAndFapAgain2@reddit
They asked if it was legal to carry a knife, I started off telling them that carrying one for the purpose of self-defence is not legal, but answered their question in good faith while warning them of my opinion that they should not carry one.
I don't think I was giving them an alternative, just answering their question.
Routine-Secret-413@reddit
Wait, your dog is SO brutal that you need to carry a knife when he wakes up 😳?!
GeggingIn@reddit
No. Not convinced even a man with a knife would have a chance if one of those twats went mental.
Time to find a different talking spot.
Consistent_Roll_9101@reddit
Get a tactical torch like a maglite, you can get knock off versions on Amazon. Anyone can carry one and you have a reason to have it in your hand if anything happens. You can't carry anything to use as a weapon in this country. You need to have a reason for carrying it.
Lollysoxx@reddit
Didn't realise it was a "stabbing dogs" kinda day but shows what I know 😵💫
Chance_Job3980@reddit
definitely not
LazyEmu5073@reddit
Perfectly legal to carry a folding knife with a blade not exceeding 3 inches all the time. (mustn’t lock into place, though)

PenneTracheotomy@reddit
“It’s illegal to use any knife or weapon in a threatening way.” - how would OP use a knife in the way they intend without it being threatening?
Flat_Development6659@reddit
Self defence covers you for using weaponry if a reasonable person would view it as necessary to protect yourself. If you've got a valid reason to carry the knife you are allowed to use it under the right circumstances.
You can't carry a baseball bat around for a weapon either but if you get attacked while playing baseball then any reasonable person would view you using the bat to defend yourself as acceptable.
CynicalSorcerer@reddit
You can’t carry anything for self defence.
You can carry a non locking folding blade under 3”. But as soon as you say it’s for self defence, like in a Reddit post or something, it’s illegal.
Raephstel@reddit
You're not allowed to carry any weapon, and the intent to use something as a weapon makes it a weapon under UK law.
Technically, a rolled up newspaper would be illegal to carry if you intended to hit someone with it.
So if your polurpose is to use it as a weapon, no, you can't carry it legally.
Warriorcatv2@reddit
Start carrying a cane or walking stick. It'll serve the same purpose without putting you or others in danger.
Flat_Development6659@reddit
You aren't allowed to carry a knife for self defence. You can carry a knife if you have a legitimate reason for it and the police will use their own discretion on that kind of stuff, if you're camping in the woods you might get away with it if you're walking your dog round a city you'll get arrested.
If a dog is locked on to yours you're best off wrapping your lead under it's neck and pulling upwards (not backwards). Dogs instinctively let go when their airway is cut off. I've done this twice with my GSD's when they were scrapping.
badgersruse@reddit
I thought you are supposed to put your finger up it’s bum?
Flat_Development6659@reddit
That's a myth, very unlikely to work and good possibility you end up getting mauled.
If things do go badly you don't want your head to be anywhere near ground level.
Zak_Rahman@reddit
I don't think so.
A knife probably wouldn't protect your dog, btw. Dog breeders made this strain so they never let go. You will get people saying "pull the legs" or "choke them out" - do not believe them. There are videos of these not working and the dog containing to savage its target.
The target, btw, was a husky - not exactly a small dog breed.
Dorrellectric@reddit
Definitely not now 🤦♂️
bluejackmovedagain@reddit
No, and if you are walking around with a knife big enough and accessible enough to be of any use in that sort of situation then someone will probably call the police.
I also don't think you've thought through how badly getting so close to a dangerous dog that you can attempt to use a knife will go.
SentientWickerBasket@reddit
In short, this is not a good idea.
In slightly longer, you are allowed to carry a non-locking pocket utility knife with a short blade, but carrying it as a weapon is going to risk a whole world of trouble for you if you actually have to use it. It's also not a practical weapon for, and I can't believe I'm saying this, stabbing a dog to death.
I would emphatically advise reconsidering this idea.
I_want_pickles@reddit
Can you carry a knife for self defence?
Yes.
Can you be arrested for carrying a knife?
Also yes.
Owlstorm@reddit
No.
Let's imagine your plan works 100% perfectly and you stab someone's dog.
Your defence in court would be that you were intentionally carrying a knife to stab people's dogs and the whole thing was premeditated?
PrincessStephanieR@reddit
Sadly not. In this country we can’t carry anything like a knife for self defence. Try to avoid the bully breeds. Easier said than done when their owners insist on having them off lead.
Ruthiereacts@reddit
WHAT did I just read? 🤯 this HAS to be rage bait
langly3@reddit
You could probably have a walking pole though, some of them have quite pointy ends, for gripping onto rough terrain.
