Dear Balkaners, what do you think about the appreciation of your currency against the USD for months ?

Knowing that the USD has been the international currency of sorts since the Bretton Woods agreements.

It's good not because there are any actual benefits, but because the Americans are suffering.
ilovemangos3@reddit
why is that good :(
Ragecommie@reddit
It's not.
The actual saying goes something along the lines of "I don't want to live well, I just want everybody else worse off than me."
Heard it in Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Turkey and Romania, pretty sure it's a thing in the entire region.

There’s a Romanian saying “sa moara si capra vecinului” or “may the neighbor’s goat die” which conveys the same concept
Throwaway2747281919@reddit
“on another’s back even a hundred stick smacks aren’t enough” or something like that
Duka99@reddit
There's a Serbian saying that goes: "May the neighbor's cow drop dead". (Да комшији цркне крава)
ilovemangos3@reddit
lol i’ve never heard that before
Dramatic-Panda8012@reddit
because its reddit 😅 they look for any way to say " trump bad "

He is.

The Australian dollar has tanked also, and it’s tough converting and paying in Euros.
Few-Age3034@reddit
We don’t care. The Dollar doesn’t affect the lev directly because of our currency peg
Puzzleheaded_Sir903@reddit
This hurts people working for USA companies who get their salaries in dollars.
When Swiss francs went up -it hurt only those who had bank loans in Swiss francs. (These loans were for buying apartments).

All I know is I am going to be able to buy more dollars for my vacation in Egypt.
Egyptians have this thing where they try to scam you by treating and exchanging punds, euros and dollars the same.
It is a measly difference, but it ammounts into some significance during the entire two week stay.
Also, it is principle: I am from the Balkans, there is no scamming me.

When Americans elected trump overwhelmingly for the second time, it was different for me then last time. This time i just braced for 4 years of complete bulshit and stopped caring about any suffering Americans brought on themselves. So what do I think - not a big difference for us,more comeuppance for them. Business as usual.

Bulgarian Leva has a fixed Exchange rate in regards to Euro ....so any moves Euro does BGN does too.
Mental-Concert-8423@reddit
i have faith that our government will "fix" that soon enough
MedicalJellyfish7246@reddit
US dollar index has been going down since January.
Smooth-Fun-9996@reddit
Currency hasn't budged its just the US dollar is weaker now
Stunning_Spinach7323@reddit (OP)
I noticed that but despite the weakness of the USD some currencies don't gain value against USD like Argentine Peso, Turkish Lira, Nigerian Naira etc...
Smooth-Fun-9996@reddit
all those currencies are extremely weak and unstable thats why. at least the 3 you've mentioned
Apatride@reddit
The currency cannot really budge, it is linked to the euro. But the euro has been losing value quite a lot compared to the US dollar. Sure, the fact that there is no gold standard anymore makes it difficult to assess but the Leva is definitely not buying you as much bread or apartment square meters as it used to.
sparkly_ananas@reddit
It is not appreciation, it's USD depreciation. USD is falling down against all currencies at the moment. Maybe with the small exception of the CAD
Hopeful_Risk8992@reddit
yes
Niko7LOL@reddit
Bulgaria, Bosnia and North Macedonia are pegged to the euro, so it doesn't really matter.

At its strongest, US$ was 1,03€. That was in 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, and Europe switched to US Gas. Now we're back down to 0,86€ for $1. And since most of the Balkan currencies depend heavily on EU trade, it's only natural for them to have similar curves
gpetrov@reddit
Our currencies are not appreciating, they are pegged to the Euro. Its just the dollar is weaker now. Its terrible for all those who make money in USD. Buying from the US is cheaper now however.
Besrax@reddit
Or those who invest in US stocks. 🥲

I cared about it while my salary was in USD. Now that it is in RSD, I pay less attention to USD value.
