Accidentally just bought two boats, what do?

Hi guys, accidentally just bought two sail boats and am wondering just how f*#%ed I am now? Not much experience on the water. I have to figure out how to get these boats somewhere safe within five days or decide it’s not worth the trouble. What do you guys think? Any advice would be incredibly appreciated haha, thanks
Legoandstuff896@reddit
How does one accidentally buy 2 sailboats..?
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Friend told me he was looking at a boat on this auction site, said a deposit was required to bid, out of curiosity because I didn’t see the deposit requirement I placed a bid to prove him wrong and ended up winning two boats at the opening bid amounts
Legoandstuff896@reddit
Oh my, how much were they?
Only_Razzmatazz_4498@reddit
$500 minimum bid would be my guess.
procentjetwintig@reddit
I found the mcgregor. Winning bod was €250
Legoandstuff896@reddit
Holy moly
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Is that bad?
procentjetwintig@reddit
Well, you spend 250 to now be responsible for a 2000 recycling cost if all goes to s$#t. Twice.
iamtherussianspy@reddit
Pretty cheap lesson as far as boat ownership goes.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Haha oh god I hope not
procentjetwintig@reddit
I also found the terms. Going over the 5 days collection term will cost you 25 bucks a day. Twice.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Wait, really? That’s it?? Dang, thanks for the information! I guess I have storage figured out for the short term then
Jalopnicycle@reddit
For just $1,550 you have them stored for July lol.
Do you have a vehicle capable of towing them? It looks like the MacGregor doesn't have a keel..... That might make it possible to move on a conventional boat trailer.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Worst case scenario 😂
I think the towing capacity of my xc70 is 3,300 lbs
Jalopnicycle@reddit
You'll need to account for the trailer weight as well.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I’m confused. The Mac 26 weighs 1600 lbs, towing capacity is 3300 lbs. If I wasn’t already accounting for the trailer weight, why would it be close already?
procentjetwintig@reddit
Well, not really. You should read the terms. They can also claim it and relist it after 5 days. So you are probably best to start communicating with the harbour asap. They might even give you a better deal for a set time. Or they might throw you off the lot at the exact end of the 5 days. Who knows.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Absolutely, thanks for the heads up! Will be calling them tomorrow morning to arrange
Legoandstuff896@reddit
Well things usually aren’t that cheap for nothing, I hope it’s not the worst though
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Same, I think there were some extenuating circumstances limiting other people from bidding until it was too late though
Legoandstuff896@reddit
Yeah it seems insane no one else bid
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
They were all restricted listings to only people who wired in a deposit to bid until about seven minutes left in the auction so I think everyone abandoned it prematurely. Another similar boat sold for about 3,000 which had its restriction lifted roughly fifteen minutes prior to these two so it caught a lot of attention
jclucca@reddit
Which would be $500 more than those boats are worth.
Only_Razzmatazz_4498@reddit
Probably. Particularly with the cost of doing anything with them and having to move them from the yard immediately. If they let him pay to store them there maybe he can sell them for parts but I doubt he’d come out ahead and most yards would insist on the owners moving them to another yard.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I’d like to get them in the water and up to a local slip
AlexHoneyBee@reddit
Someone with a fishing boat could tow you, but really you should confirm if they have kicker brackets ASAP. I think your brand new outboard from online would take more than your 5 days, maybe a marine store. You could find a used outboard but I’ve had one bad experience ruin that approach. You could move the boats with a small outboard, but check currents and double check your plan with a local sailor. Also check if there are anchors, measure the lines on the anchors, make sure the end of the line is tied down. Get fenders if needed. A VHF radio if you don’t have one, and really any of the required safety gear before moving it. If the running lights aren’t working you can buy the clip-on portable kind. You probably have some orange flag / flare / horn requirements. And a comfy life jacket that you don’t mind wearing while underway.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Thanks! I’ll look into getting some kicker brackets, fenders, lights, life jacket, etc. and definitely look into the towing option. Someone mentioned TowBoatUS
AlexHoneyBee@reddit
Yeah that was me who mentioned the TowBoatUs - I looked at my old emails just now and it was BoatUs.com that I had, and is a good idea for the price even without your urgency. You may want to find the marina closest to you, get it towed there and then taken back out of the water (at least one). I was just in Port Townsend for the past few days and the marina there is mind blowing with amazing boats in a huge dry dock area, the marina in Quilcene looked nice in terms of the slips. Once on land you can eventually find a trailer to move the extra boat to someone’s property (I say this having slept in a land yacht airbnb.. like a 1960s wooden cruiser). Regarding all the gear suggestions it’s from when I had a 1978 hunter 30 in moss landing, California, so I don’t know the regs for Washington. To install a kicker bracket you’ll have to go through-hull and use thick bolts and large stainless fender washers, and a little butyl tape or something to make it water right. Check YouTube for anything outside your expertise.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Oh dang, thanks again haha! That’s a really good idea, if I had to have a boat anywhere, port Townsend would be amazing and I could just bike there and take the ferry and back!
After learning a little more and looking back at the pictures again I think the Newport might already have a kicker bracket installed!
And the macgregor has the 8 hp Nissan outboard.
So maybe I could tow one with the other, I just need to find a spare outboard! I’ve been looking at the electric trawling motors with 86 lbs of thrust
Kahliss814@reddit
Wait-list for a slip in port townsend is probably 5+ years. Most every marina on the west sife of the sound is going to be a couple year wait. I got my boat into shilshole (the largest marina in the NW) and it was still a six month wait. Been on the Edmonds wait-list for 2 years. Started at 30 something on the list now at #5
Good luck!
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
What is the length and type of your boat?
Island_girl28@reddit
What would happen if you just didn’t show up and walked away? More than likely they would just keep your bid money and put them back on the auction block. I have no clue actually, but I doubt they would come after you. 🤷♀️
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
It would cost me 40% of the winning bid to back out but I think I actually want these boats
Island_girl28@reddit
Ahh, well hey, if you want them go for it. Wishing you only the best and good times!
yelruh00@reddit
Do they actually float?
Slips for 2 boats will cost you about $1-3K each depending on where you are. Moorings are cheaper.
blahblagblurg@reddit
1k-3k for a slip? where do you moor? Abu Dhabi?
yelruh00@reddit
The Abu Dhabi of the US...Salem/Marblehead, MA
blahblagblurg@reddit
I love those octopus looking land extensions you have there made from witches bones!
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I have no idea 😅
Yeah it’s looking like local slips are all roughly $10 a foot, and moorings are around $200
Adventurous_Mine6655@reddit
Check out Port Orchard Railway Marina. Very cheap, no BS marina that can buy you some time. It’s a couple hours to get out into the channel but a decent parking space for a while.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Will do, thank you for the suggestion. How do you qualify for the first free month? Do you need a minimum amount of time?
Adventurous_Mine6655@reddit
Nope just move your boat in and you’ll never leave 😆
Pm-Me-Your-Boobs97@reddit
This sounds like the prices in my area. Uncovered slips for a 30 foot boat are about 300$ each in east Texas.
Shopshack@reddit
Might as well take them straight to Blaine. No slips in Bellingham, but if you start in Blaine you eventually will get a shot.
Hullo_Its_Pluto@reddit
How much did you pay for them
GrandpaSteve4562@reddit
You don’t even know if they still float.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
True. I can do a visual inspection of the hull for cracks, holes and damage, then feel for soft spots though right?
GrandpaSteve4562@reddit
Check all places where there is a “thru-hull” . Those are fittings that penetrate the hull for various reasons, to let water in for cooling or let unwanted water out. Shake them by the hoses if there is a hose connected and check for cracked fittings. Make sure that you can close the valves on any of those that have valves.
NaiveChoiceMaker@reddit
Get it inspected first. The last think you want is to put it in the water, watch it sink, then have to pay a salvage company to come save your a$$.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
That would be bad
RobinsonCruiseOh@reddit
the Mac25 has mainsail under a bag and a rolling furler. doesn't look in bad shape. Better yet, with a cheap trailer you can move it someplace else to assess / sell.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I’m looking for a trailer and I’m floored by the prices I’m seeing, 3k?? Is that considered cheap? 💀
RobinsonCruiseOh@reddit
yes unfortunately. There rarely are trailer boats like Mac's that are sold with out the trailer because these are never usually kept in a marina (which defeats the whole purpose of a trailerable boat).
Usual_Yak_300@reddit
Here we go again! Im not going to say a word.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Wait what happened last time?
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Does that value determine my next course of action? Let’s say they were… relatively, or maybe even suspiciously affordable
Gouwenaar2084@reddit
There's an old saying that nothing is as expensive as a free boat. If they were that cheap I'd worry what was wrong with them to be so cheap. Could be nothing, people do sometimes just rush sell boats, but the cheaper the boat, the more intrinsic concerns I would have
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
The auctions required a deposit to bid which was waived on one auction at first just twenty minutes before it closed, and then the deposit requirement was waived on these two listings with only seven minutes remaining, and I might have just been the only person there to bid
Accomplished-Farm201@reddit
This feels scammy. Any way you can pull out?
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Yeah, it just costs 40% of the auction ending bid so $100 per boat lol.
A-Queer-Romance@reddit
$100/boat is a STEAL to walk away from this. For someone familiar with boats fixing up ONE boat is a huge project that takes lots of time and money, particularly with no slip or trailer to keep the boat on. I cannot imagine how you will handle two.
I strongly suggest not “just not responding” to your commitment to purchase. The screenshots you sent were from a government auction site, and the boats were seized due to being abandoned (which may mean the owners stopped paying their marina fees). It is not unlikely that the sellers will pursue you for nonpayment if you disappear from this transaction.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I can get insurance for both for $250 a year and take them to the port orchard mooring for the first month free. How else does one get a boat?
No_Lifeguard747@reddit
That $100 per boat to recind your offer may be the best $100 you ever spend in your life.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
You might be right 😂 but what else am I going to do instead?
Island_girl28@reddit
Walk away!!
No_Lifeguard747@reddit
Well, if you keep one or both boats, over the next decade you will develop a great collection of tools, knowledge of small diesel engines, become an expert in fiberglass and epoxy, and learn to shapeshift and contort your body in ways you never imagined possible - trying to access remote components of your vessel.
And spend an enormous amount of time and money in the process.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Well it’s already happened with bicycles, cameras, microscopes, solar power systems, and I’ve already got the composites as well 😂💀 so might as well is what you’re saying. And yes I love tools too, I’m a Wera representative
Ok-Science-6146@reddit
There's a few tricks to that saying. First is that all boats are expensive. Second is that you can run a boat for almost free if you don't mind it being trashy as hell. Third thing is that people buy boats thinking that it will fit their lives and it just doesn't. So the boat sits unused for far too long and eventually just gets abandoned because it's too much work to clean it up and sell it. And the person is on the other side of the state and there's taxes and liens and who has time for all that crap. Just forget the boat and hope no one calls you. Thus free boat.
Gouwenaar2084@reddit
I'm trashy as hell, please tell me more
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Me too
Ok-Science-6146@reddit
Get boat.
Fix nothing.
Add the absolute minimum.
Enjoy the boat.
If something breaks in such a way that it prevents #4, then and only then do you consider a fix.
Fixes you apply do not need to include factory genuine, marine quality. Consider duct tape, garden hose, and 3M 4000 as a fairly complete tool kit.
Angel Boats!
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
This is the response I was looking for 😂
Ok-Science-6146@reddit
Hey, that Newport is a really great boat btw. Worth cleaning up.
Suspicious_Bet1359@reddit
Don't do this, keep it maintained then you don't have to guarantee having to pay for disposal
vulkoriscoming@reddit
I am a master at steps 1-5. Sadly, once something breaks badly enough to hinder step 4, I tend to actually fix it. This tends to be expensive and take substantial time, hindering step 4.
justinchina@reddit
I feel like often the port of Everett boats go un-bid on. As someone who keeps an eye on their mailing list…I’m super excited to hear from someone who actually pulled the trigger!
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Really good to hear from someone with some extended local insight, but slightly concerned I’m acting as a Guinea pig haha
justinchina@reddit
Since they are both on the hard, it may be cheaper/safer to just have them trucked to wherever you want to put them to start the work that’s almost assuredly needed to get these beauts back to seaworthy! I’m assuming you aren’t married…or if you are…you haven’t told your partner yet.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I will be doing everything within my reasonable power to claim them, as far as I can tell it’s a decent opportunity, albeit with some sizable risks
justinchina@reddit
Did you get a chance to look at them before you bid? I’ve only gone to look a few times over the years, and often the boats are in pretty bad shape. If the marina management says they can stay, then they at least were taken care of, but the ones where the marina says they MUST go…I’m a little nervous. A few times it’s even felt like maybe a homeless person had been camping in it for a while.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
No unfortunately I have not seen them in person 💀
Legoandstuff896@reddit
Tbh I’m just curious, I sail a dinghy I got for free and don’t know a thing about boat storage, best of luck with these though!!
fishsticks40@reddit
How much?
Also, call a transport company and a storage yard. The MacGregor looks decent.
Usual_Yak_300@reddit
I sold my keel boat for a number of reasons. One major reason was the amount of actual sailing time vs. annual fees. It wasn't breaking us, it just was a call on good reasoning.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Do boat yards have cranes that would be able to put this into the water so I could sail it north to my home city and find a slip for it? If so, how much is this service usually? Or will my only option be to transport and store on land?
Han-YoLo-@reddit
This is the comment that lets me know just how over your skis you are on this.
Yes they can drop it in the water for you, the prices are all over the place.
But the fact that it’s on the hard means that it might not be up for that.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Yes, you’re spot on. That’s my main concern. If the hull has no holes, worst case scenario it can just be motored home right?
Han-YoLo-@reddit
With the Mac pretty much. The Newports engine, fuel tank, through hulls could be in any state of disrepair. By the time one of these auctions happens the boat has probably been sitting around for years with a bunch of projects on them that got started and not finished.
Island_girl28@reddit
This👆
walt-m@reddit
Does the motor actually run?
permalink_child@reddit
Or the batteries?
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Yet to be seen
fishsticks40@reddit
That is far from the worst case scenario.
Are you talking about a 4-hour motor or 4 days? What's the weather like in the next 5 days? How cool are you with dying? How are you going to sail 2 boats?
rolandofeld19@reddit
"How cool are you with dying?"
True. True.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
65 mile motor, calm weather, maybe, co-captain
Jimmy-r@reddit
Make sure your life insurance premiums are paid.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Life insurance?
No_Lifeguard747@reddit
Do you have reason to believe that the motor runs? That the fuel is clean and not slimed over with algae? Engine cooling system works? Transmission/throttle works? That the rudder and tiller/helm works? That the bilge pump works?
Can you check weather and sea state forecasts? Read tide charts to determine appropriate times to depart and arrive?
Not trying to be Debbie Downer. Just trying to help to survive the trip you’re planning.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Actually I can check sea and tide charts and am familiar with nautical gps navigation thanks to spending a summer on a gill netter in Alaska and going out to work at Decatur NW every weekend.
I was hoping to remove any questions about the operability of the motors by simply introducing my own 8 hp outboard instead, would this be viable?
8thSt@reddit
Assuming the motor gets you home then yes. But there are a lot of assumptions there.
permalink_child@reddit
Yes. Crane fee is about $200 per boat. Go for it. Make sure to have good cup holders on board.
Forsaken-Sympathy355@reddit
Have you ever sailed before?
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I took some lessons in third grade but not since then unfortunately
Suszynski@reddit
I would strongly suspect that neither of those boats are seaworthy! There’s nothing more expensive than a free boat
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I’ve heard this many times throughout my life which why I am here. But to be honest these boats were being bid to roughly 3-4000 so not exactly free
Highlifetallboy@reddit
Why did you buy a boat with no knowledge of what you were doing or how to get it home?
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Life is short
Forsaken-Sympathy355@reddit
Yikes
jh937hfiu3hrhv9@reddit
They have a travel lift and it costs a couple hundred bucks. Hope they float and engines run. Good luck getting a slip. Call now.
CanoegunGoeff@reddit
I can’t stop laughing at this lmao congrats on your two boats
severalsmallducks@reddit
Another sailor once told me: If you don’t have any problems in life, you buy a boat. And if you still don’t have enough problems, you buy another one.
Inevitable_Brush5800@reddit
People with this mentality must live a nice life where few things break and when they do, they just go buy a new one. In my life, everything is broken, including the boat, and I'm alright with it. I'll take on the project.
severalsmallducks@reddit
Perfection is the enemy of completion. Everything on a boat breaks at certain points. Accepting it as part of the hobby makes things more fun.
Inevitable_Brush5800@reddit
Learning to appreciate the fixing of things, even if they are an annoyance at the time, will make one much happier. I firmly believe this is part of why people look back on the early advent of the internal combustion engine and the growth of modification with a reverence.
Humans are meant to build, run, jump, climb, create, etc. Modern society has bundled all of that up and said "no more, only in your 'free' time may you do this".
As an example, for me personally, I've never felt more satisfaction in my work, whether it be research in Graduate School or my numerous process improvement projects at my job, than I have felt when I painted a house I drywalled and mudded myself.
Anyway, those are just my thoughts on it.
severalsmallducks@reddit
I fully agree. I was not born a handy person; my parents always paid someone else to do the dirty work at home or whatever.
Getting a sailboat however and fixing with it has given me way more confidence in my own abilities than much of my academic career. Being able to diagnose, source parts and fix a marine engine, even one that’s 45 years old, is an incredible feeling.
Inevitable_Brush5800@reddit
It really is. I am trying to instill that in my kids, by allowing them to see that you can take a 50 year old home that was heavily neglected and make it your own; even if you possessed zero skills to do so when you started. You can get a Hobie Cat with soft hulls, knowing not how to sail or perform fiberglass work, and you can learn to sail and fix it. You can drive a 250,000 mile car because you can fix the things wrong with it if you need to.
Handy-ness is not a trait one is born with but it acquired through confidence building. A baseline of intelligence helps, I believe, and if you listen to my Granny, I am the smartest of her many grandchildren...though she may say that to all of us.
Anyway, my education for work was always a means to an end. When I realized it was just a means to a means, I turned my attention to other things that could be more fulfilling. As an example, I'm sitting in a room that I expanded, hung drywall in, mudded, sanded, painted, etc. without having any experience in it; it looks like a professional crew did it. No amount of $100,000 savings in time for Boeing will surpass the feeling I get sitting in this room, looking at the water.
yelruh00@reddit
I got 99 problems and a boat ain't one......just kidding I have 99 boat problems

kavasalix@reddit
i would suggest accidentally selling at least one of them.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Any suggestions on prices to list them at?
kavasalix@reddit
the only boat more expensive than a free boat is an accidentally purchased boat.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
What does that have to do with the question though
cd66312@reddit
Not the OG poster, but with boats that age and size, value is very closely tied to condition. If they were perfectly maintained, had sails in good condition, and were super clean, you might be able to get 5-10k each. If they are not 'ready to go' and need a lot of work, you might have trouble giving them away.
The macgreggor is pretty simple, and if you had it cleaned up and with good sails, and found a trailer for it, I bet it would be pretty easy to get 4-5 k for it. The other boat might be worth more (like 10k) in great condition, but you might also have to spend 20k to put it into great condition.
Lurkinzz@reddit
Sell one

If you have very little boating experience please hire a professional to help you move these on water.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I’ll probably just get them towed
Kahliss814@reddit
The McGregor should be trailerable. Find a hotshot crew with a boat trailer to move it. That shouldn't be too hard around that area. Splash the Newport and have it towed where. Probably a couple grand for that.

I have a Newport 28, they are a good boat.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Wait, why is that such an issue? After looking into it aren’t new titles only $5? Or am I missing something? Also, how easy would it be to install a shower into a Newport 28?
Petaris@reddit
The Newport 28 has a shower, it is a combined head/shower setup where you sit on the toilet lid and shower off. The floor has the shower drain which just goes to the bilge.
Re: Title
I'm not sure really about where you are, but in Wisconsin and Illinois the previous owner needs to either provide the title to you or fill out a form for lost title, sign it and have it notarized, then send it in with a check to get either a duplicate title sent to them or to have a new title created in your name. If you don't know, or are not able to work with the previous owner things get even more difficult.

ajmwagar@reddit
Deception Pass can be tricky.
You'll need to time it with the tides.
What is the motor situation? You don't wanna get stuck fighting the current there and have a motor fail and end up on the rocks.
Might be worth going south around Whidbey, and crossing the Haro Strait via Pt. Townsend.
I did Seattle > Pt. Townsend > James Island in 2 days with time for dinner and drinks in Pt. Townsend (try Sirens and the In Between)
Moorage in Bellingham is cheaper, but usually has a wait list.
Best-Negotiation1634@reddit
You can skip deception pass and just go up the Swinomish Channel. East and safe. It will put you out right next to Anacortes. Bellingham is an easy sail or motor from there.
Adventurous_Mine6655@reddit
Gotta time the tides with the Swinomish channel too. It gets very shallow at the south end. 😬
Best-Negotiation1634@reddit
Yes! We have a 68’ Irwin with a 7’ draft…. Just enough to get stuck in mud at the south end at low tide, and tall enough to only fit under the bridge at low tide. (89’ air draft)
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Shouldn’t have a problem with tides sailing the Mac 26s with the water ballast!
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I was thinking of grabbing two or three new 8 hp outboards and using those instead of messing with the included engines, what do you think?
SodaPopPlop@reddit
Good choice to have a backup outboard
hellowiththepudding@reddit
I'd try the inboards and see how they run, but if you can mount up an outboard it's a good failsafe.
You'll probably need a mount, extra long shaft, etc. It will take some planning.
blisfo@reddit
If you need any help or just an extra set of hands, I’m in Seattle and frequently up in Bellingham for family. Would be happy to do some labor or help sail.
SodaPopPlop@reddit
Come on
blisfo@reddit
Yeah, in hindsight prob a weird offer to make.
I almost bought something in similar shape. I feel I dodged a bullet, but I wouldn’t mind helping out someone who didn’t and needed an extra pair of hands.

How do you accidentally buy two boats?

ElPresidente2000@reddit
Sail one and sell one?
yctaodnt@reddit
The problem you have right now is the easiest one you will ever have with those boats - any boats - but those boats too
all_good_eq@reddit
There was a time that I had 3 boats (I guess 4 if you consider the dinghy). It was wonderful because I bought them in a series which helped me learn and get each boat to a point that I could sail and enjoy it. At the time, I was living on one of the boats, so I was always close to the others for basic maintenance and repairs. They all served different purposes. One was our home (45' motor yacht), one was a condo for visiting family and a rental to a friend for a year (38' sailboat). The last was for sailing around (23' sailboat) and keeping my skills up while learning from the much more experienced sailors that lived in the same marina. None of the boats were in spectacular condition when I got them or when I sold them, but they were made better in my care. The sailboats were in rough condition when I bought them, both requiring new propulsion, 1 inboard and 1 outboard, the motor yacht was pretty sorted but needed new water heaters and upgraded black water plumbing because we wanted to use our fresh water tanks rather than seawater for flushing. This is all to say I've had some experience with multiple boats, and frankly, being overwhelmed by boat issues. The kind of trouble you're in now is pretty exciting, but that really depends on where you are in life and how enthusiastic you are. Boats can be not only a commitment, but also a liability. Depending on your skill level for doing repairs and maintenance, and what you are doing for storage, they can be quite expensive. Here's what I would do...
Step 1 - Prepare to spend a little money. You are now responsible for two boats. The development of your reputation in the boating community has begun. If this is something you're pretty sure you want to pursue for a hobby, keep in mind that this community can be pretty important to you. Ok, so figure out what you're dealing with. Can the boats hold water? Don't try to put them in the water if you're not 94,6 percent sure. If you do, ask the lift driver to let the boat(s) hang in the straps for a bit so you can assess (be sure to pull all of the cushions and removable interior bits before you do this. You want to see as much of the hull as possible before the boat goes into the water). While on the hard, Inspect the hulls and through hulls for issues. My recommendation is to find someone who knows boats that you can trust to accompany you, paid or not. Check for slop on the prop on the Newport (I'm assuming it has an inboard). This would indicate loose or missing packing around the prop shaft and will cause a leak. Topside holes are easy to patch and can wait until you figure out what you're doing. Figure out what tools/supplies you might need on hand for the coming week and get them to the boats.
Step 2 - Find a home for them. It's pretty clear that you have to move them, but it may be worth visiting the harbor master to see if you can rent a slip by showing that you're committed to getting one or both boats sailing. Alternatively, and maybe cheaper, you can find someone with a trailer to pull the boats to new destinations, whether they be your backyard or a boat yard. 5 Days isn't much time bit if you work with the powers that be and they know you are really trying to get them out, they may offer you a bit of grace. Either way, you're going to learn a bunch in the next 5 days...and probably stress the f*ck out. Unless you can get rid of one/both where they sit, they are your responsibility - Your new babies.... BTW, having kids prepares you for owning boats but ruins the possibility of using them at the same time. If you don't have kids and are really interested in trying this out, COMMIT - There's no better time in life.
Steps 3... Figure out how you're going to move them to the places you have set up for them to reside.
I could go on and on, but I've gotta go. Regardless of how it turns out - Good luck! While you've probably bitten off more than you can chew, this is an opportunity for growth and learning that will not likely come around again.
OberonsGhost@reddit
Now you need two bank accounts full of money.
Everythingisnotreal@reddit
The Macgregor is designed to be towed on a trailer, thats why it doesn’t have a fixed keel. Step the mast and buy a used trailer, take it to your house if you want. You could tow it with a small pickup or SUV probably.
The Newport would need to be shipped by a professional service.
In 5 days neither of these boats will be ready to safely traverse more than a few hundred feet in calm waters.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Thank you for that great information.
The last part is unfortunately not what I wanted to hear. You can tell just by visual observation?
Everythingisnotreal@reddit
Well, to take a boat out on the water you need to be sure of proper steering function, proper fuel supply, proper engine servicing and function, proper safety gear available and serviceable, and the hull doesn’t leak, at minimum. Thats just to motor the boat slowly. Five days isn’t much time to do all these things on one boat with an unknown past, let alone two boats.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
If it doesn’t leak could I just use an 8 hp outboard instead of struggling with the included engine?
Everythingisnotreal@reddit
That depends on the conditions in which you’ll be navigating and your abilities to operate the vessel in a questionable state of serviceability.
I use the analogy that operating a water vessel is like flying an airplane. When something bad happens nobody is coming to help you, you have to be prepared to rescue yourself at all times. Towboats are not minutes away, they’re hours away.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
I may just uhh go with a tow service haha

Here's right about the Macgregor, but if the Newport will float and the outboard runs (can be checked on the hard) then go sign up for towboat US. Motor the Newport out and call towboat and have them tow you to Bellingham. It's not that far and there's an easy route there.

First get ahold of an inspector and see if either of these are worth your time, for the price it doesn’t sound like it 😬it’s hard telling not seeing it in person.
If you’re cool with projects, find a way to keep the Newport and get it in a slip to work on over the summer if the boat doesn’t take on water or have a busted bulkhead.
As far as the Mac goes, see if you can’t get it to another scrapyard if possible, though the boat’s scrap may not be worth the crane fees and hauling it; or maybe donation to a school might be worth it too. Times like this you wish scuttling the boat was a viable option.
Best of luck man.

Throwaway_carrier@reddit
Either way don’t let this discourage the sailing bug! Seriously it can be a lot of work but also fun, I have made a similar mistake in the past.
And someone on here mentioned, possibly just being a deadbeat bidder and not taking the boats could be the best option; I don’t know what the legal ramifications would be but steering clear of it and not taking them may save you a lot of money in the long run. Then maybe find a seaworthy boat on Craigslist or Facebook.
Plus, it may even be worthwhile to just let them know you made a mistake, and didn’t know what all of it would entail. They may be okay with you not getting them and just refunding you; maybe not, but always worth asking, discussing, and being upfront and tell them everything you just told us.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Thanks! I went in full well knowing worst case I would lose my entire bid amount, and am fine with that risk to potentially salvage a $4-5000 boat. I’ve been interested in sailing and liveabord for a while now and figured why not explore these current options. My long term goal is to get a boat to Hawaii, the slip fees are the same as here on the mainland making it by far the cheapest solution to living there
Throwaway_carrier@reddit
Then this might be the best thing to ever happen to you dude! I genuinely mean that, with a little TLC that Newport might be your future dream boat that gets you there. 😎
FBones@reddit
They will ban you from further use of their website, but just go no contact. Don’t pay for them and then let the process run its course. Sucks that they have to scrape them, but they are better equipped (salvage contractors) than you are and this will likely only get worse for you.
Don’t get too disheartened. We just took possession this weekend of a boat that was listed on a municipal seizure auction but didn’t sell, and we got it for a song considering its current condition. Unfortunately this does not appear to be the same situation lol
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
These are really in that bad of a condition? 💀😂 dang
FBones@reddit
I mean, the Mac may be salvageable, the big question is condition of the centerboard. The Newport could be just fine, but that would require that the engine isn’t seized (and that you have the know-how or pockets to hire somebody with the know-how to fix it). With both you need to worry about condition of the standing rigging, whether there are any areas of delamination (more likely in the Mac than the Newport), keel/rudder condition, are the sails aboard and if so, what condition are they, etc, etc, etc…
My bigger concern, and I don’t mean this in any malicious way, is your apparent lack of knowledge base. The likelihood that either of these vessels is ready or near-ready condition to be put to sea is very minimal. Assuming that is the case, do you know what to look for and how to assess current condition of the vessel and what it may need to be sea-worthy? If not, do you have the funds to hire a surveyor to do this for you? Do you have the funds to make the needed repairs just to be able to put to sea?
While a cheap boat is always tempting, you have to be honest with yourself whether you have the capacity and/or capabilities to take it on. Boats are never, and I mean never, a buy once cry once purchase. Do you have an idea of what your budget is to get the boat in the water and moved to whatever location you are looking to take it to? How much can you budget for the next 1/3/6/12 months?
All of that said, I don’t want to dash your dreams. Finding a diamond in the rough is possible (we literally just did this month and closed on it yesterday, finally!), but I had the understanding of what I was looking at, and was able to also do some sleuthing and find out a good bit of relatively recent info about the particular vessel that kept the momentum going. As we weren’t actively looking for a boat prior to happening across this, we had to put together a quick list of go/no-go’s and 6mo budget since we only had a 1/2 day to look over the boat while in the water. Thankfully for us, she happened to pass all of our worry points with flying colors, and the estimated work fell within our budget (especially because the purchase price was so low). But we knew as best we could what we were looking at, and have the ability and knowledge base to do almost all of the work ourselves.
All in all, I’m not saying you shouldn’t do it, but don’t let the appeal of a cheap sailboat cloud the rest of your senses.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the advice! Definitely no experience although I am deeply experienced with advanced composites in industrial settings, I’ve worked with ronstan to develop custom dyneema lines for novel applications, and have a very deep technical understanding of fasteners and mechanical engineering.
Not to say that any of this transfers over to sailing, but I believe that a lot of this experience would allow me to easily judge the mechanical health and seaworthiness of a vessel. I am also quite handy when it comes to mechanical things and wouldn’t mind flushing some fuel lines and overhauling an engine. But I’ve also been recommended that a simple $100 8hp outboard can be used for now on both boats?

Is that a boat without a keel?
PS I have a Newport and if they're similar then all of your thru hulls should be above the waterline and you can be confident in it floating as long as there are no legit holes or shot prop shaft bushing. See if the engine runs, the main is attached, and go sailing. Maybe invest in a strong flashlight and one of those portable running lights that runs on batteries.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)

Best chance is to see what bailing on this entirely looks like.
If they float you may be able to use a small outboard to get them somewhere. But a marina will require insurance and cost money.
If you're very lucky they arent total junk and could be sold at a profit. But even then it would take effort and knowledge to manage that and everyday you don't sell them costs you more money and time.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Yeah it’s looking like insurance is based on the value of the boat so got lucky there.. maybe $150-200 a month each, then $100 each for a 8 hp outboard, $15 for title and insurance. The port of Everett charges $25 a day over the fifth day to store so worst case scenario storage on hard is $750 a month. If I back out I just pay %40 of the winning bid, so $100 each boat. Cost of anchors too. Average slip cost is roughly $250 a month

That MacGregor appears to be a classic 26, not the older 25 stated in the description. The year is probably correct and that looks like what is commonly called the 26S. The "s" for swing centerboard as opposed to the earlier 26D with a dagger board. Both are water ballasted for easy trailering. Not worth a whole lot, but they do seem to hold their value a bit better than the older swing keel MacGregors.

Find out how much they'll charge to launch them. Marinas are often desperate to get rid of these boats, so they might do it for free. Almost certainly with some tinkering, the 8hp Nissan on the McGregor will probably fire right up. Bring a five gallon can and see if it cranks. Go from there.
You'll pay so much to transport these by land that it won't be worth it, I'm afraid. It'd be one thing if they had trailers, but they don't. I bet you'd be looking at something like $1000 for each boat.
If it was me, I'd have a real, real good look at them on the hard. Full inspection to try to see if they're watertight. Then I'd have the marina launch them and I'd take the looooong and slow 65 mile journey to where you can slip it.
Or you can just start paying storage at the marina!

DadBodFacade@reddit
Based on your story of purchase, if I were you, I would be very honest with the Marina about how you accidentally purchased these and ask their grace to potentially forfeit your bids and walk away from these boats.
At best, I would ask for a short window to verify they will float and are operable.
I imagine to use their travel lift to put these boats in the water or on a trailer, you are going to need to provide significant liability insurance for the boats. That itself will be costly, especially if you do not have a survey for either boat.
Slip fees and yard fees will be very expensive relative to your purchase price - especially since your doubling costs with two boats. And if you put them in the water and they sink or cause another emergency, you could be on the hook for emergency assistance from the marina, salvage and environmental costs.
Personally, I would be most concerned with my credit rating in all of this - because I don't know if the marina would pursue me in collections. If I did not pay yard, slip and other fees which might become due. I have to imagine they will, as non-paying tenants are a regular part of their business and they can't just lose money all the time.
So, it might make the most sense to simply see if you can walk away from this "deal. "
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
You’re absolutely spot on and I completely agree with everything you’ve said unfortunately
fightinroundthworld@reddit
£500-1000 is a decent price to pay to experience sinking a boat or two, take an outboard, dinghy, dry suit and life vest (optional GoPro to record the potential mishap as a lesson to your grandkids), get them in the water, stick close to land and send it.
Remember, it'll only fanacially ruin you if you get them back safely and have to fix them up. If they sink, salvage costs only apply if you get caught leaving them.
(Don't take this advice)
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
Hahahah thank you, I really appreciated reading this!

I found the listings. And had a good look. I'm not sure the keel on the MacGregor might still come down. It looks like it has been sitting in the slip for a good long time. So it might be stuck. Might not be ready for a journey.
I can also garantee you that the engine in the Newport wont work. Thats why there is a engine mount on the stern.
i would put the McGregor including outboard on ebay short auction time no reserve. Just to get rid of it. Slam an outboard on the Newport and boat it to Bellingham.
YoghurtDull1466@reddit (OP)
That’s a good suggestion, if I sold it at auction what would I be responsible for in terms of removal, etc?
Can both boats take an outboard?
dred124@reddit
Concentrate on the Newport. Get it to where it needs to be. If you have to let one go, dump the Macgregor. It’s a barge to sail anyway.
Suspicious_Bet1359@reddit
They don't look too bad so far.
The concern so far is no visible keel on the 25' one.
The 28' is a much nicer size. And being a 78 should have a better constucted hull.
On the other hand, boat stands for Bring.Out.Another.Thousand.
One boat is hard work and a lot of money. 2 is suffering. I'd honestly keep one and get rid of the other.
They're expensive to keep, maintain and moor
My 78 carter 30 project has eaten a hole in my wallet and built a cavern into my bank, and that's given that I'm a well seasoned mechanic with a good friend who is pretty much an expert on everything floating.
And I'm just getting started.
I'm already looking at re rigging and antifouling the boat...
GeoffSobering@reddit

Suspicious_Bet1359@reddit

Since I got it from the owner before the marina took possession of it, I was responsible for the yard fees to drop it in the water, but the guy I got it from covered most of it. Because you bought it from the Port of Everett, there may be an agreement for getting it in the water as long as you are removing it.

Forget about the MacGregor. If the Newport is sound (soft spots in the fiberglass and around any ports or hatches, bubbles in the glass, cracks or damage to the hull, and on and on), that is the boat I would try to save. It would be a great boat to cruise the San Juans and Gulf Islands. And you are right there.
That being said, I hope you got a great deal, because now it gets expensive and labor intensive. Break Out Another Thousand. Boats of any type are expensive to bring back to life. Go price stainless shackles and other rigging. It's an eye opener.
If you plan on racing, the saying is that sailboat racing is like standing in a cold shower in your rain gear ripping up 100 dollar bills. At least ripping up bills can be true for any boat.

One for you, and one for your long lost twin brother.... me? Or cannibalize one to make the other perfect. Or sell one and use the proceeds to fix up the other one.

Haha that would put you third in line after a friend and the guy above who would fly from Bremen, you can discuss with him

Hahaha I figured, sadly, I'm in no place to own a boat (landlocked area).

At some point, you may just want to chalk this up to a mistake and never take possession of them.
