What if Nell had stayed?

Watched Lessons (0619) recently and I kept thinking how wonderful Daren and Picard were with each other. Maybe she made the right decision to leave, but I don’t think Jean-Luc ever found a better match, tbh. What if they had just put in the work to make the relationship last?
Funnily enough, Ronald D. Moore said “I liked the relationship with Nella and wanted it to continue aboard the Enterprise-D, but that view was in the minority. I thought that she matched up well with Picard and that we should’ve just played it out over several episodes.”

Putting aside the real-life complications (Wendy Hughes was Australian and I think she much preferred doing theater work there), there's that thing about ship captains not wanting to have long term relationships with anyone under their command. Came up in this case, and in ST: Voyager, and was a running issue in The Orville too.
You can only go to that well so many times (is the captain going to be compromised by having to send his/her love into danger?) before it gets stale and if they aren't doing that, then what else can they do with them?
ArcherNX1701@reddit
I'm sure there's a rule about that in the current military. In any case why would you send a gorgeous redhead down in harm's way?
Apprehensive_Rain880@reddit
i really liked picard as asexual, idk if it was cause i was a pre-teen at the time (47 now) but watching it as a adult i'm like he really has way to much going on for that non-sense right now lol picard was married to his duty and it's why i liked him more than any other captain (though i loved sisko i never watched ds9 only enough times to know i hated it)
strangway@reddit (OP)
I kinda like everyone on the show to be asexual, but that’s not entirely realistic. They even made the robot man sexual in episode 2, and he didn’t even have emotions until like 8 years later.
SoybeanArson@reddit
Poor Geordi needed to get a damn girlfriend that wasn't a hologram. They tortured that poor guy in the romance dept. LaVarr had some interesting takes on why that happened.
strangway@reddit (OP)
Geordi was smart, confident, talented, and good looking. Yet somehow a total flounder with women. That didn’t seem so realistic to me. The man could stare down a muddy Romulan holding a disruptor to his face, but couldn’t relax around Christy Henshaw.
Darth_Spartacus@reddit
I've known plenty of guys that had good qualities, were tough and still couldn't meet eyes with a woman let alone talk to her. To me, it seemed Geordi could speak technology, just couldn't speak womanese. Maybe Guinan could have spent more time with that poor fellow.
strangway@reddit (OP)
Guinan certainly could’ve helped Geordi. Worf was right about him, he has much to learn about women. Then again, Worf’s idea of romance involves bloodletting and primal yelling, but tbh some human women are into that kinda thing.
Darth_Spartacus@reddit
Lol that's the truth
SoybeanArson@reddit
LeVar Burton once speculated that TNGs writers were uncomfortable writing romance storylines for a black man. Hard to know if that was at all true without being there, but that was his take after being on the show and interacting with the writers. Dorn got the benefit of playing an alien, so he got some romance stories written for him. Luckily that does not seem to have been an issue that made it to DS9, VOY, or ENT. The Sisko got plenty of action 😂
AgentMV2@reddit
DS9 never gave us what we all wanted, those cowards.
Bashir and Garak romance.

True

while i was in the navy there were times where we would "tomcat" and bring a girl back to the barracks (i was a seabee "dirt squid") but we both usually knew it wasn't going to be a regularly occurring thing
i knew plenty of my battalion mates who wound up engaged in homeport where we had less hours and more time to actually get to know people but when we were deployed any week we didnt work 18 hours a day 6 days a week was a miracle and most of the time our day off was spent on guard duty so establishing any kind of relationship was difficult even sexual ones
so yeah we got around sometimes and it was usually the women who engaged that behavior but like our duty ports were japan and puerto rico and this was 98/2001 so the culture gap was far bigger then cause the internet wasn't as prevalent as it is now (like no one was talkin about friends and seinfeld in okinawa) so while i get how the enterprise is like the nimitz pulling into Virginia i can't imagine having enough time to disembark from a crew of 1000 find the best singles bar and then get that alien back to my quarters and then fall hoplessly in love in 22 minutes of that 38/42 minute episode while also making sure barclay isn't dry humping the dilithium crystal port and sorting out my report on any bugs the quantum computers had while we did standard ship maintenance
picard meeting the thief chick on riza seemed more organic and while i wasn't a fan of her i could see her with a recurring role following the enterprise around and letting the crew do all the heavy lifting for her to pop in and steal a artifact and she was different enough from picard that he might be intrigued especially with her background in archaeology

Hell, in Star Trek II, they very awkwardly infer that Scotty got a wee bout of space-herpes during shore leave and Dr McCoy pulled him through.
Apprehensive_Rain880@reddit
through or off HEYOOOOOO! cheer's scottie!!!
strangway@reddit (OP)
I don’t know if McCoy ever hooked up with men, but in Star Trek: The Motion Picture he was absolutely beamed out a 1970s sex party. It’s possible a man slipped in. There would be no way of knowing.
HellyOHaint@reddit
Yeah the entire episode is about why it wouldn’t be a good idea and it would effect his judgment as captain.
kamdan2011@reddit
What the hell was with this woman looking like Crusher from season one with a different hairstyle?
strangway@reddit (OP)
What, 2 redheads 2 much?
alanonoWyluli@reddit
If she'd stuck around, she would have died a horrible death and permanently scarred Picard for the rest of his life. 🤯
Fluffy_Somewhere4305@reddit
Amazing actress, would have been fantastic longer term on Trek.
Gone too soon in real life, like damn only 61
Chancellorjake@reddit
Obligatory response. Fuck Cancer!
Kiki1701@reddit
Huh? When, why? I can't remember her name and I'm too tired right now to muddle through the episode list.
HalJordan2424@reddit
Wiki says she died from cancer. It can happen to anyone at any age. It’s just that the odds of getting cancer keep increasing as we age and our immunity systems fail.
Kiki1701@reddit
Oh yeah, I'm aware. I'm a retired nurse so I know how easy it is for our cells to protest against getting older. It's about the loss of the ability of our cells to continue to duplicate without genetic drift. It's almost like a xerox machine endlessly making copies, but the original gets more and more damaged, so the copies start to slide off the page...
RedSunCinema@reddit
She was a nice character and made Picard happy but ultimately she was, and frankly any female love interest, was a distraction Picard wouldn't tolerate long term.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit
Didn't she die in the episode?
strangway@reddit (OP)
No.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit
There was an episode I just watched, I think it was the end of season six where JLP goes off the D and works with a lady that he falls in love with, but she dies at the end. Which one am I thinking of?
Mass-Effect-6932@reddit
There wouldn’t be a Jack Crusher Junior
strangway@reddit (OP)
I consider that a plus.
TAG08th@reddit
What if she would have stayed?
My thing for older women and redheads is already bad enough. (Thanks, Crusher.) Let’s not make it worse.
505Trekkie@reddit
r/PrettyOlderWomen welcomes you.
Yeah she was a complete and total babe.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit
All of those ladies are my age.
TAG08th@reddit
Never heard of this sub. I open it up and am greeted with a pic of Ali Larter.
🥂
CMDR_ACE209@reddit
Wait, she's my age, what's she doing in an older ladies sub?
TAG08th@reddit
That was my reaction to pretty much every pic I saw. 🤣
Olivia Munn?! Olivia Munn is 42. How is she a pretty older woman?!
505Trekkie@reddit
We welcome you here, we all have mommy issues. But yeah I agree about Nella being both an “older” woman and a red head. Sadly as I recall the actress passed away fairly early.
TAG08th@reddit
61, cancer.
We’re here for a good time, not a long time.
Azryhael@reddit
How old does one have to be to qualify for that sub?
505Trekkie@reddit
40
irongi8nt@reddit
Don't worry Picard has the same thing going on.
baller-union@reddit
Oh ya
succubus6984@reddit
Oh hell yeah!! Being a preteen watching her and Troy do those leg stretches in the yoga studio episode. I dont remember anything about that episode or what season it was in but those yoga scenes stuck with me. 😂😂
rdiaz84@reddit
Right on brother
BadTechnical2184@reddit
And then when troi had red hair in the movies I was completely gone.
TheApexFan@reddit
Her story arc would have culminated in fan-favorite episode, “The Quickening,” in which she and Beverly Crusher fight each other to the death in an epic dance-off.
Sufficient_Button_60@reddit
I thought they had great chemistry
Ornery_Ocelot_980@reddit
crusher deffo would have “accidentally” poisoned her lol
El_Burrito_Grande@reddit
Man, Ron should have been given the keys to modern Trek.
thexxit@reddit
Great actress and good character, but I thought the whole point of her was to convince us why Picard couldn't be with Crusher at the moment. Obviously they couldn't get Picard and Crusher together on the show and then break up, but they did want to continue the tension between them, so suddenly this woman comes along and shows us why it won't work with Picard and Crusher (at least for now). They just contrived this "perfect for him" woman. She was never going to last.
Soft_Jackfruit_4809@reddit
I wish she would have. STTNG needed a science officer presence... She was awesome.
PresentDangers@reddit
Then things would have played put differently.
I cannot fully express how much I loathe these rotten "what if" posts.
strangway@reddit (OP)
It’s my first, but that’s what the downvote button is for, lol 😝
BlueGreenRed_678@reddit
She would have pushed the babe-o-meter over the limit. They literally sent her to a planet and it lit on fire because she was such a hot babe. People died! We can’t handle it!!!
mattpeloquin@reddit
They’d have started a jam band
Dakka666@reddit
Neela
strangway@reddit (OP)
Both “Neela” and “Nella” are acceptable, since the script originally had her name spelled the former way, then it was changed to “Nella” for some reason. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Nella_Daren
Dakka666@reddit
Oh, TIL.
strangway@reddit (OP)
I remember her name being Neela for some reason, but when I watched it last night, it was Nella.

What if the world was made of pudding
Brain_Hawk@reddit
Well it would be sticky, and we would keep sinking, I wouldn't be stronger to hold the ball of our buildings so those would sink and become full of putting, and we have to eat ourselves free but you can only eat so much pudding.
So I guess eventually be all drown in the pudding.
There are worse ways to go, but a huge amount.

…and I Have Touched the Sky
Great TOS episode. It turns out the place was run by an old computer all along!
Conscious_Low7358@reddit
Vash would get her lost somewhere...
strangway@reddit (OP)
I think Vash would be into Nell.
Rocketboy1313@reddit
TNG was too episodic for its own good. Yeah you get plenty of good little stories, but no one grows or changes the way they should.
Sisko had his girlfriend arrested and she still married him. Did Paris and Torres suffer from a lo g term romantic arc? Picard remains far too much the same guy season to season. Everyone does.
strangway@reddit (OP)
Paris had a character arc. He went from prisoner to Starfleet officer, to husband, to dad.
Rocketboy1313@reddit
I know. I am pointing to him as a positive example. And how Picard lacked that sort of long term arc.
strangway@reddit (OP)
Oh yeah. Picard had some character growth areas.
Apprehensive_Rain880@reddit
her and doctor crusher would have combined and become the most annoying thing since alex
LadyAtheist@reddit
You mean Neelix?
Apprehensive_Rain880@reddit
no worfs kid those episodes are nightmares also why i didnt watch ds9
Tedfufu@reddit
If she had stayed? Where else could the relationship of two people be attracted to each other but put work first go? The episode played it out
strangway@reddit (OP)
Lots of TV shows have people in long-term relationships. Why wouldn’t it work for Trek? Not saying it had to be the focus of the show, just a new dimension to explore.
We certainly got that with Sisko and Yates on DS9.
LadyAtheist@reddit
Will they / won't they has always been risky for TV.
They are doing it in SNW with a starfleet relationship that isn't on the same ship. That could have been interesting in TNG.
strangway@reddit (OP)
They did will they/won’t they for 7 years on TNG. Bev and Johnny nearly made out in episode 2, just like everybody else on the Enterprise in that episode, except poor Wes.
Tedfufu@reddit
The episode showed why it would not work for Picard. He didn't want to be involved with someone under his command and she didn't want to give her position to be with him.
How would her staying on the Enterprise change that?
strangway@reddit (OP)
I’m asking a hypothetical question like “What if the episode was written differently so Daren and Picard worked on building a relationship together in spite of whatever career challenges lay ahead.” instead of how the episode simply wrote her off. If you don’t wanna entertain this hypothetical scenario, then that’s cool 👍
pacard@reddit
Presumably a MFFF 4 way with Jean-Luc, Bev, Nell, and Vash
gwhh@reddit
That story line was handled so bad.
kaptiankuff@reddit
A half brother jack crusher Picard that will appear in legacy
gaiusjozka@reddit
No Jeffries Tube would be safe from their coupling.
RealAlienTwo@reddit
If Nell stayed?? Teyyy ina wiiiiin!
gaiusjozka@reddit
Chickabaaay. My head went there, too
NerdyLeftyRev_046@reddit
I’ve always appreciated the Picard character was in what was essentially their decision to marry Starfleet. Picard had romances, but he didn’t have room in his life for someone else. He only had room for the captain’s chair, and wherever it might take him. So while I’m quite glad Picard didn’t have a long term relationship, my personal favorite of his love interests was Vash, but there was never going to be anything stable that came from her. Which is perhaps why he was so drawn to her
Ok-Push9899@reddit
Great character, super powerful acting, and I think the writers liked writing for her. She reached parts of Picard no other guest star could touch. Well maybe Kamala/Famke Janssen. or Vash/Jennifer Hetrick. what am I saying? Picard is a swooning teen in the right woman's hands.
strangway@reddit (OP)
Picard-Vash was a great coupling for short stints. I think she would’ve gotten bored with Picard, and Picard would’ve gotten exhausted by her non-stop brattiness.
At least with Nella, they could share low-key intimate moments together sampling each others’ tea, if you know what I mean.
N7_Warden@reddit
Picard is as bad as Kirk. Her, Crusher, Anij, Laris and a couple others
trer24@reddit
Jenice Manheim and Phillipa Louvois rocked Jean Luc’s world a few times I bet

VegasBookworm@reddit
Oh, hell to the NO. I would have only approved of Nella staying on for a few more episodes if the satisfying conclusion involved her flung out of the nearest airlock. Every week, my romantic teenage self watched TNG back then hoping for even a snippet of Picard/Crusher scenes. I had long decided Beverly was JLP's soulmate, so I hated Nella Daren (who someone on this sub aptly referred to as "Discount Bev") . I haven't watched the "Lessons" episode in over 30 years, but I remember Nella irritated me in her scenes with Riker ("Do what I say! I'm the Captain's Woman!") and Crusher ("My elbow is so sore! Too much sex and duets with your Captain!").
Thankfully I never had to see Nella again and Beverly was back where she belonged, in Jean-Luc's quarters, in the next episode, "The Chase." Byeeee, Nella!
IssueBrilliant2569@reddit
Crusher would've found the anomaly in her medical scans proving she was a spy, either for the Romulans or the Borg.
Unhappy_Run8154@reddit
She was so beautiful in that episode
EvilWhiteDude@reddit
They should have transporter accidented her and Picard together a la Tuvix. Think of the girl talk Bev and Troi could have had in the yoga gym
BaronNeutron@reddit
Someone would have had to have commented in the show on the similarity between her and Beverly
PeenerPan69@reddit
Picard would have gotten laid a lot more while off duty
laffingriver@reddit
they would have had to make more conflict between the two, which pretty much played out in a speedrun during this episode. or they would have had to make her background/housewife/crewmember and that would have done hee character a huge disservice.
having them breakup and her stay could have turned into the ensign gomez style pop in randomly, that would have been fun maybe.
i like how she left and we are wanting more- it feels like a breakup.
CmdFiremonkeySWP@reddit
We get to skip season 3 of Picard or at least substantially change it
