Thought he had a bad back or something?
DoctorAnnual6823@reddit
Yeah he fucked up his back before he was on the show.
But honestly I don't know a single person over 6'2" that doesn't have the worst back I've ever heard of.
MilesTegTechRepair@reddit
I'm 6'2 and 41 and while I've had back issues before, my back is mostly fine
DoctorAnnual6823@reddit
I will add that the people I do spend like 9+ hours per day nerd necking their PC screen. Gaming chairs don't help either.
finobi@reddit
Nor ergonomic chairs, you need to train legs and middle body a bit
MilesTegTechRepair@reddit
Gaming chairs (should) help a lot compared to regular chairs, but office chairs probably best, I'd guess. I've been at my desk for something like 70+ hours every week, fyi.
DoctorAnnual6823@reddit
So many gaming chairs are the worst out there. It's usually the cheap knock-off ones. A good $250 office chair will dunk on any gaming chair in existence in my experience.
But honestly posture is probably the biggest part for a lot of people. I assume you have good posture or do other things to proactively take care of your back?
Dirt290@reddit
If it's not your back it's usually the knees.
MilesTegTechRepair@reddit
My knees are fine too. And I've been a middle-> long distance runner for most of the last \~20 years.
I do have pretty bad shoulders, though. Lots of problems with my shoulders. But that's more likely to be diabetes-related
big_z_0725@reddit
I'm 6'2", over 40, and my back used to hurt. It still does, but it used to too.

Is that AI? What tool do you use that will generate a real person and real IP (Star Trek) like that? I thought most of them refused to create real people/things.
Malefectra@reddit
I’m also 6’2, just hit 40, and my back is a murderous bastard to me…. Are we trauma buddies now?
Brunette3030@reddit
There are strength training exercises you can do for this. I’m 5’11 with a long torso; I’ve birthed 6 babies, and my lower back was starting to hurt all the time. Lots of back extensions with gradually increasing weight (I’m up to doing them while holding 60 lbs now) and then side planks have strengthened the stabilizing muscles around my spine so much that my back feels awesome all the time now.
Malefectra@reddit
in my particular case, my pain and limited mobility are thanks to having a buncha stuff fused thanks to atrocious scoliosis and previous spinal fusion hardware degrading. Excercise seems to only seriously aggrivate things. I just keep trying to move as much as I can tolerate in a given day until I can get with another spine doc and get it sorted out.

Does The Riker Maneuver work for your back pain? (The leg swing over a chair thing, not the shagging every guest of honor that boards the ship)
Radix2309@reddit
I'm sure the exercise can't hurt, helps loosen the back muscles. Plus probably some good stretching involved.
TrexPushupBra@reddit
Eh? It is fun to do since all the chairs are too small anyways.

Correct. He injured it when he had a job moving furniture. And when you’re on a set like this, you have to hold your position for a very long time.
I wrote this up in a comment a long time ago. Wil Wheaton responded to the comment, confirming it. It got enough traction that it became the source for a lot of articles that came up when you googled “Riker Lean.”
That was back before I got randomly banned from the “main” subreddit.

The bad back was why he sat by lifting his leg over chairs. The Captain Morgan was usually to get him in the frame with a sitting or shorter actor.

Alec Guinness (Obi Wan Kenobi) in Bridge on the River Kwai, the dinner scene after he's been let out of the sweatbox. He uses it to assert his dominance over the Japanese. I always thought Frakes just wanted to be Alec Guinness.
Raterus_@reddit
I had a (male) boss once that assumed that position many times during meetings. It was awkward, to say the least
YYZHND@reddit
Data does it too!
Rustie_J@reddit
The difference being that the raised leg is the one closer to the navigator. The way Riker does it looks like he's framing his crotch for Data's viewing "pleasure."
letter_cerees@reddit
It looks like Data's giving him the ass instead.
theblot90@reddit
Yeah. Will is more like a..."I'm gonna rest these here on your shoulder for a minute" kinda pose.
Rustie_J@reddit
FR, between the outer leg & the arm behind Data's shoulders, he basically has him caged in with his cock.
TheHYPO@reddit
Unless Data cranes his neck way around, Riker's crotch is nowhere near Data's sightline. i.e. this is not putting his crotch is Data's face or sightline, IMO.
Using the left leg is more natural given that he is also supporting himself with his right hand on the back of the seat for balance. That would be far less natural with the right leg. Data is balancing his arm on his own knee, which looks far less comfortable and more awkward.

Drinking game: One shot every time Riker does that
ThorsHammer245@reddit
It’s the riker maneuver
Batgirl_III@reddit
It’s not just Frakes’ bad back, especially when he does this pose with Data at the ops console, it’s also about fitting the 6’2” Frakes into the same shot as the 5’10” Bret Spiner who is seated in a fairly low chair…
If Riker were standing straight up, every close-up of Data’s face would have Riker’s pelvis and only his pelvis on screen...
indyferret@reddit
So the main character then
Enchelion@reddit
You say that like it's a bad thing...

Picard: Will data and that console are starfleet property stop exposing both to your "area"
mabhatter@reddit
From a military point of view that's probably frowned upon. But from a storytelling point it works well to have Riker stepped into the frame closer to who he's talking to. The shots wouldn't block as well if he was standing two feet away.
TheHYPO@reddit
It's also specifically important to the story of this episode, since Data needs to be in position to stare at Riker's rank pips in the critical moment.
Unhappy_Run8154@reddit
The Riker maneuver was invented next😂

SmallRedBird@reddit
I upvoted because I think the post is funny but like, I am a lesbian and I still think that's his sexiest pose, even though I wouldn't do it with Riker. So on a serious note, I don't want to whack him for doing it - I just think it was a good acting decision both in a screen-appeal sense and a "actor needs to accommodate for physical issues" sense
bbbourb@reddit
And in this still shot, Data has a look that could be interpreted as "Commander, I believe we have discussed you putting your foot on the ops station's pedestal. I thought we had agreed you would discontinue that practice."
CeruleanEidolon@reddit
"While I am not personally, offended, it is my duty as a friend to inform you that the volatile odors wafting from that region of your anatomy are at a level even biological organisms could not help but detect, and they are more prone to offense in such matters than I am. borisvonboris@reddit
Each console has a plastic step stool next to it for when Riker needs to take things up a notch. I call it The Riker, but Riker calls it The Captain Morgan.
cube193@reddit
Yeah but if he didn't do it that time would Data have thought to use Riker's suggestion to decompress the main shuttlebay?

foO__Oof@reddit
The reason he always did this along with the way he sat on chairs was because he was so tall if he stood straight he would be out of frame or found it too odd to sit on the chairs like a normal person...Thus the whole joke with Boimler yelling "Riker" when sitting on the saddle in the cross-over episode.
Rocketboy1313@reddit
Look at the framing tho.
A 4x3 aspect ratio on a set with two guys in uniform, but his posture and placement in frame makes it have a sense of motion even when they aren't moa lot. It is like a panel in a comic book.
This only seems odd by modern standards where the camera moves around more freely, is in wide screen, and there is an emphasis on "reslism" where people, like the camera, move around alot.
Witty-Excitement-889@reddit
What, in the balls?
1ndomitablespirit@reddit
The chair thing is because of his back or something.
This is because he's tall and it would look stupid for him to crouch down so he is in the frame of shot.
Urabrask_the_AFK@reddit
Riker maneuvers Morgan and Silla respectively allow just enough cheek clearance for a silent wind to be emitted without drawing attention or interrupting fellow crew members
