Panthean@reddit
People laugh, but this seems like an effective defense.
Seems like a bad idea to leave the windshield unprotected though. I'd think it would be worth giving up some visibility to have bars in front.
purpleduckduckgoose@reddit
Indeed, should have slapped some Kontakt on it.
Limekill@reddit
why up armour the glass? If a fpv hits anywhere it will destroy the whole vehicle anyway....
Armour does not work well against fpv.
purpleduckduckgoose@reddit
Mate. Kontakt is ERA. What do you think is gonna happen when you stick explosives on glass.
It was a reference to an earlier scrap wagon that had been covered in the stuff, even the windshield.
gilbatron@reddit
All these weird distancing devices only really make sense on armored vehicles.
In that case, they can cause a shaped charge to detonate at a distance, which reduces the effectiveness of the explosively shaped penetrator.
It's pointless on trucks, cars, motorcycles, buggys, and donkeys.
Limekill@reddit
armoured vehicles are easily killed if one of these detonate.
And you've lost yourself a $100k vehicle.
so may as well do this anyway.
Switchblade88@reddit
If I'm going to kamikaze a drone into an enemy vehicle then yeah, I'm aiming directly for the breakable glass and not the body panels.
At least the chain fence covers are lighter and provide more visibility to the driver
Ok-Brilliant-5121@reddit
i think if an fpv hits the windshield and the thing explodes, they are having a bad time both with bars in and bars off, so they chose to have the better visibility
plunderdrone@reddit
Im genuinely curious what happens when an FPV hits those spines. Could the explosion force the rod back into the vehicle? Definitely think when it gets exploded, those rods are going to fuck up friendlies more than foes.
Limekill@reddit
If a fpv hits its going to destroy the vehicle no matter what.
GenericUsername817@reddit
This will keep us saver from the drones comrade.
5 minutes later, a drone gets stuck on spikes and detonates next to an unarmored bread box van.
Limekill@reddit
better than a $100k up armoured vehicle....
amica_hostis@reddit
What the hell is that supposed to do?
Dramatic-Resident-64@reddit
Increase standoff distance for drone strikes.
Looks like specifically the ones with the wire on the front that needs to be pushed in, chance of it not going off at all.
kremlingrasso@reddit
Those wires just need to touch so anything heavier than some treeleaves will set it off. And even then, this isn't armored, the shockwave and the shrapnel still messes up everyone inside if it is half a meter plus or minus. I think this is just one of those time waster projects to stave off having to go out.
Limekill@reddit
do you think russian engineers are the same as russian shock troops?
KillmenowNZ@reddit
Break the FPV before it hits
syringistic@reddit
A larger drone with a few pounds of explosives will frag tbis thing anyway...
A_Queer_Almond@reddit
I guess the idea is to hopefully destroy/disable the FPV before it explodes.
syringistic@reddit
Seems like a really large amount of work for a dubious effect.
KillmenowNZ@reddit
Even if it had a 5% chance of working or smaller, how much time and effort would you put in to saving your own life?
dinkleberrysurprise@reddit
How much speed and maneuverability are you willing to sacrifice for this dubious benefit? How much rebar that could otherwise be used in your defensive works?
These decisions have trade offs
Limekill@reddit
rebar is plentiful lol.
earthwoodandfire@reddit
There are plenty of other ways to prevent drones that are much easier and more effective.
syringistic@reddit
The time and effort, I would spent driving this van to the front. Breaking out a white flag, and surrendering lol.
ImTableShip170@reddit
Ukrainians are not kind to prisoners, and Russia is not kind to deserters. Rock, hard place.
TransonicSeagull@reddit
Probably makes them feel better ...
syringistic@reddit
Great way to stay fed while fight a war.
"Oh, look, a deer!"
"Oh look, dinner!"
hoosarestillchamps@reddit
I would rather sit there welding up an art car than actually going into combat, thise last few rods would take me months, maybe years to finish.
syringistic@reddit
Sure but we dont know, this could have been done close enough to the front line that the welders are still at risk.
VolunteerTranscriber@reddit
I feel like poking the ready-to-explode payload the drone is carrying with a long metal pole upon hard impact wont make it too happy
theoniongoat@reddit
Probably hope that as you're driving down the crappy crater laden road at 30mph, the fpv drone coming to hit you from behind gets the props fouled by these spikes as its coming from behind or the side without triggering the contact fuse. Then it falls and goes off on the ground. That should get it 5+ feet away from the vehicle by the time its hit the ground and exploded, which makes a huge difference with these small charges on the fpv drones.
Boring-Library2382@reddit
that makes a lot more sense
Bored-Ship-Guy@reddit
Yup, that'd be my guess. It seems like kamikaze FPVs are one of the biggest threats on the field in Ukraine, so doing something- anything- to prevent one from scoring a direct hit is a matter of life and death.
This being said, I wonder how many conscripts are gonna shank themselves trying to scramble into this thing in a hurry.

I hope this thing gets captured and put in a museum. Alternatively put a ton of explosives and blow it up for scientific purposes
A-Res-@reddit
Nothing wrong with this setup, Russian forces should proceed with uparmoring every vehicle like that 😎
Andrew_Higginbottom@reddit
None on the roof, so isn't anti drone.
Republiken@reddit
We aren't shown the roof in the video are we?

The Reverse Crumple Zone!
This revolutionary technology makes drone issues a thing of the past, and catastrophic vehicle accidents a farmore prevalent worry of the future!
Observe, as the suspension groans under the weight of the badly welded metal!
Marvel, at the comprehensively buggered weight distribution of the vehicle!
Gawk, at One Bottle Vasily haphazardly driving the van along the road, fighting with all his might to counter the completely random listing and swerving the vehicle undertakes as a tine catches the road or a suspension coil slowly breaks down, whilst oxymoronically gunning the engine for all it's worth!
Awkwardly Stare, at the later burning wreck in a ditch, whereby all the tines and spines that hit the previously inopportunely placed lamppost, or subsequently the ground as the van rolled, got pressed into the bodywork and into the interior compartment!
Be Agog, at the fact Vasily still somehow walked away, only to die later by being hit by a Chinese golf cart.

Can't speak for its effectiveness, but it's certainly cheaper than reactive armor and arguably looks cooler
