.... Why. That shit weights more than grenades, so for infantry clearing it sucks. If you need to get that close for a shot (you need to with a barrel like that) it will be short down ages before that. Anty drone ? At range it will be cheaper to use a shit drone and ram it into the enemies, of just tag along with lengths of wire and fly over the properlers.
Better use the shotgun shells to shoot the drones. Russian mind at its finest
lessgooooo000@reddit
Ukraine has been using similar types of drones for a while, they do have some purpose.
For example, you’re never fighting just one drone. Common Ukrainian drone tactics (I’m citing what I’ve seen with UA forces because they have the most open info on it) involve some recon drones flying higher with zoom capability, a few drop-munition drones, and a few FPV kamikaze drones.
Anyway, if you’re some Russian fireteam in an open field (for whatever fucking reason they keep doing that), and some drones start targeting you, its functionally impossible to monitor all of them at once from the ground. You could have olympic skeet shooters, you still won’t hit the FPV drones coming at you. So, most infantry just starts running. At this point, using a couple shotgun drones would be extremely effective at making a retreat impossible. You’re not going to get many kills, but you guarantee that they’ve got injuries, making them incapable of running away quickly. Thats when you drop some nades on slow moving targets, and call it a day.
People keep saying “urr duh just shoot the drone down” but seem to not realize how fucking hard that is when there’s a gazillion of them around. The more shotgun capabilities ground soldiers have, the more weight they’re carrying, the less effective they are as infantry.
Heptanitrocubane57@reddit
What is the point of using such a drone with the shotgun ? If you want to get close enough to cause injuries which can stop the soldier you can replace literally every single one of these pipes with a small explosive in the same pipe but sealed. Aiming those in any sort of precise manner would be a nightmare even without recall assuming that the recoiless system even works.
You can do that with a drove flying through the trajectory they are flying from, dropping a single grenade. Unless they are running out of explosives, it just doesn't make sense to me because it simply isn't efficient as I see it.
No-Might31@reddit
the concept isnt bad, its meant to take out drones not inft.
shotguns are cheap and so is the ammo, you dont really need to aim precisely unless ur using a slug or buckshot, because birdshot spreads a lot.
this does however seem like a very janky, heavy set up and taking into account the fact that Ukraine has a lot of EW devices and jammers this would likelly have to be implemented on fibre optic drones, reducing range and making it easier to trace back to its source
CyanideTacoZ@reddit
If you're good at moving drones and already have a jamming device that makes drones stand still this might be useful.
bat at the same time why not just shoot it with a real shotty or a rifle which already exist
Dial595@reddit
I thought it would be antidrone drone
TealcLOL@reddit
Is that a drone? It looks suspended concept weapon.
Fit-Willingness5422@reddit (OP)
From what I read, it says small-scale production has begun by enthusiast engineers and is being delivered by volunteer organizations.
baz303@reddit
Imagine calling yourself a super power and have to rely on volunteer organizations.
Next to that, those cant blow up entrances, vehicles and soldiers and chances are way higher to doge such a "shotgun" shot than an explosion. And i guess aiming is pretty fuzzy.
pileofcrustycumsocs@reddit
It’s for other drones. Ukraine has had some success with similar setups from what I understand.
No-Might31@reddit
the Ukrainians have used everything from shotguns, net shooters, mgs and rockets on drones, as in shooting the rockets, not like fpvs.
some are more effective than others, but you cant say it isn't funny that a "Global Superpower" has to rely on their civis to build them shit cause they cant inovate
Turbo_UwU@reddit
ya but the Ukraine dosnt consider itself a global player i think
pileofcrustycumsocs@reddit
From what I understand these are not being produced by Russias actual military but rather “enthusiasts” who are donating them. regardless it’s not a bad idea to adapt a technology that’s proven effective against one of Russias biggest threats. Crude but effective. If it looks stupid but works, it still works.
ForeignEchoRevival@reddit
Where exactly are these being built in Russia and what's the names of these enthusiasts? Asking for a friend.
SemenSkater@reddit
It definitely appears to be on some concept test rig.
AyeBraine@reddit
The thing in the photo is a mock-up from steel profile, in the shape of a regular quad copter
geeiamback@reddit
Also suspended on cables so (rest) recoil can be observed?
jferments@reddit
Damn y'all -- World War III is going to be a literal hell on earth.
KennyRiggins@reddit
Ww4 is going to be fought with sticks
lessgooooo000@reddit
I have always thought this is silly. Need a gun in WW4? Just dive to the bottom of any waterway going through a big city. You’ll find everything you need. Some snubnose .38s that got dumped from mob hits in the ‘70s all the way to a few dracos with a drum. The world could be destroyed by nukes, there will always be enough guns dumped into rivers to field a small army, and thats not counting boating accidents either.
Nexerade@reddit
yea, its not like nukes are gonna erase whole earth surface. There would probably more guns than people to fight in WW4, also abundance of metal and tools we made would be enough for local blacksmiths to craft arquebuses and muskets. Everyone would get unlimited anvils - just go cut off part of rails from railroad and thats it.
TurdCollector69@reddit
If we committed to a full nuclear war the majority of the earth's landmass would be ok.
It's the ecological collapse and resulting famine that will kill everything larger than a housecat.
OneFrenchman@reddit
Please don't fire guns that spent more than a few hours in water.
lessgooooo000@reddit
grab some go/no go gauges of course, but I’ll be honest with you. I’ve seen some shit that was underwater (freshwater) for years fire with decent reliability. Obviously its significantly less safe, but I’d rather have a gun that might blow up one day than a stick if we out here in WW4
RenegadeRukus@reddit
Then there's all the Appalachian bunkers/cavern hideouts, probably loaded with more than most military armories...
Mk4707@reddit
How bad would it affect terminal ballistics? mainly speed of projectile.. gunsmith/physicist please help me out on explaining this💋🤙❤️
UrMomsaHoeHoeHoe@reddit
Does this mean we could also see a .22LR Gatling gun on a drone?
Salyut_@reddit
BF4 final stand?
Ill-Salamander@reddit
Is a 'recoilless shotgun' just a pipe with a shotgun shell and a complete disregard for operator safety?
RogerianBrowsing@reddit
Pretty sure it’s a pipe that has two shotgun shells facing opposite directions so they both fire and the recoil is mitigated
Sinistrial_Blue@reddit
Knowing SmekalkaTech, the shells point at each other. All projectiles meet in the centre of the RR, and only the shells limply plop out.
OneFrenchman@reddit
Did you know that unsupported shells are much more dangerous than the bullet?
If you throw ammo into a fire, you're much more likely to be killed by a shell casing than a bullet when the powder ignites.
Sinistrial_Blue@reddit
In the case of smekalka, you can guarantee the rear shell somehow hits friendlies.
And possibly the front shell.
RogerianBrowsing@reddit
That would explain why it looks the way it does…
OneFrenchman@reddit
The shell is so light that you can't have it unsupported when firing, it'll fly out and the lead shot will just roll out of the barrel (or get stuck).
Actual recoilless guns vent a large part of the detonation from firing backwards, so it pushes the gun while it's firing.
AyeBraine@reddit
The operator is on the ground.
KaLium86@reddit
Why is this shitty?
small_chinchin@reddit
So, uh… which side towards enemy?
SquillFancyson1990@reddit
The cool thing about it is the troops are also expendable, so you can hit them, too
Nexerade@reddit
Well I mean? unless you have angels on your side you don't really care about shooting into the air
I_Saw_A_Bear@reddit
reminder Ukraine has already fielded and scored kills on drones (and possibly infantry) with similar concepts: https://youtu.be/BoirTLwxLs0?si=u64xsOp9Y24lYPMm
