We’ve had a portable air conditioner in the bedroom for 3 years now. It’s been great. Lots of Chinese brands around but this is from Daewoo of Korea. It hasn’t missed a beat.

I got a small ish one last year, hose out the window and it is glorious, have been extremely comfortable through the raging heat. Also does just a fan and a dehumidifier, well worth the £90.

We took the plunge a few weeks ago, it's brilliant. It is very loud but I'm pretty sure you can get quieter models by spending a bit more money. We tend to put it on before going to bed so when we come up the room is cooler. Last night it took our room from 28 down to 21

I moved to Germany a few years ago and it gets a lot hotter here, we have maybe 15-20 35C plus days per year. So I bought a 13,000 BTU portable AC. It's loud as fuck, looks ugly and the hoses are kind of a pain in the arse. But it's cold as fuck, and if you place it in the right room, with the right airflow and maybe a fan to direct the air around, you can easily cool a pretty large area by a significant degree. Costs about £5 to run it for 10 hours, worth it by a mile for the 45-60 days a year that we use it. I'd say it's worth it if you do the planning. Feel free to ask questions if you want some help. My unit is a Woleix A027C-14C. I paid 360 EUR for it, which is about £310. I would recommend it if you're OK with a loud unit and want to save some money. Total setup for everything (extra fan, a set of curtains and a spring rod to segregate the staircase and keep the cool air on my top floor, vibration reduction mat) was about £480.

Single splits in lounge and all bedrooms. Get used plenty through summer for cooling and lounge one sometimes in winter for heating as it's instant for when a quick heat up is wanted. All invertor driven units that have a COP of around 3.5-1. Worth every penny though must admit that was very little as I work for an HVAC company and bought all the units at company discount rate and fitted them myself. Worked out at less than 1k for the lot.

A couple of years ago, I had a triple split Mitsubishi AC system installed in my bungalow. For me, one of the best home improvements ever made. If I l sell and move, I can assure you I'll already have the air-con installer on standby.

If you want to feel much more comfortable in this muggy heat, yes they're worth it. They are expensive to run and you will see it in your leccy bill. I always got the quietest model available. Make sure you can adequately vent it, the heat has to go outside. There are window vents and door vents on Amazon that will do that. You might need to extend the exhaust hose too. My brother has two split systems in his house and it's really pleasant in this hot weather.

I got a freestanding Ariston unit and shoved the hot exhaust up the disused fireplace. It works well. They're loud and that's not great for sleeping next to, but they all have a dehumidifier mode that helps dry clothes indoors in winter, keeping mould down. Buy the biggest cooling capacity you can. Mine's 9000btu and uses about 900w. It's JUST enough for our master bedroom, but probably great if you don't have high Victorian ceilings. I'd rather have a fully fitted system but this is great while I save up.

Got A/C fitted into our garden gym room we built last year and it makes it nice and cool for working out. This week my wife was away, so I slept out in the gym and it was much more preferable. Definitely want to get A/C fitted into the main house next year.

Had one for years. Bought a second a couple of years after the first. Zero regrets. Ballache to set them up and I try to be fairly frugal about use but they are the difference between sleeping well and not. They also mean my elderly greyhound can exist in relative comfort when it’s hot.

This year, make a note of every time you really wish you had A/C. I did that last year and it was 10 days. Definitely not worth it. Not so much because of the cost but because I don't want giant white boxes on the wall of every room.

I worked out it'd be in use fewer than 15 days a year. My house is spread across 3 floors with lots of small rooms so would need 5 units to cool the whole house. It's not so much the cost it's the having multiple giant white boxes on the wall of every room.

Have a portable one, heavy bugger. It's setup in my daughter's room with some elaborate fan work to move the air around upstairs. Doing that as well as keeping the windows & curtains closed upstairs it doesn't feel so humid or as hot.

We bought a portable unit last year. I set it up on Wednesday night this week with a MacGyvered cardboard window seal. It’s noisy. All the portable units are (that provide a decent amount of cooling). Portable units aren’t particularly efficient because they suck air out of the house, which gets replaced by air from outside, which is warm. If we weren’t paying for a new patio this year, I would already have had some proper split system AC installed in at least 3 rooms. Much more efficient and a million times quieter. We might only need it for a fraction of the year, but for that fraction of the year it makes an enormous difference. The literally difference between me being able to work from home and being too hot to even think.

We have a portable floor standing A/C, my partner is asthmatic, it’s been running every day in this heat even in Scotland. Without it, I think we would be in serious trouble. You must fit it properly with a window sealing kit.

We have a heat pump air con in our garden room and it's marvellous. I primarily got it as it's a much cheaper way of heating the room than resistive heating (it uses about 900w and outputs about 3.5kW of heat). It's also great in the summer of course. If it gets really hot, my daughter will often sleep out there. It's a Toshiba Daisekai with internet connectivity, so we can set the temperature of the room before we go out. It's incredibly quiet, both inside and outside.
