Are funerals still mostly "wear black" affairs?

Black being funeral standard wasn't a thing until after WW1 (Queen Vic started the tradition of associating black with death). Sunday best was what people typically wore to funerals, and in my experience, my grandparents generation still turned up to funerals in Sunday best (Silent Generation). So, really, it's the Boomers who bedded in black to funerals. And even then, plenty of Boomers want colour and wakes rather than black and solemnity. At one funeral I attended last year, the dominant colour worn was red because people turned up in the football kit of the deceased's favourite team. The family suggested that when they announced the funeral arrangements. When my gransha died 20 years ago, my gran didn't want gloomy colours, so she told people to wear what they wanted. That left people uncertain, so they defaulted to muted colours. It's much better to tell people what colour range to wear because they will play it safe if they're not sure. You could make it bright colours and a wake-like celebration if you want to avoid gloom. Just tell everyone "no dress code, but brighter colours preferred".
