I’m seeing all these comments about parents getting mad about the CDs we bought it was the opposite for me. My dad learned of the Jerky Boys at work, sent out and bought two of their tapes and played it full blast on our stereo laughing the entire time one afternoon while I’m sitting there thinking “uhh, should I be listening to this, WITH MY FATHER?”
Then again he listened to old jazz and couldn’t really judge what we listened to given how effed up Miles Davis and Charlie Parker were. I also watched Lady Sings the Blues about Billie Holliday at a very young age.
Beastie boys and 2 live crew my Japanese friend had his mom take us to the mall to buy them she didn’t speak English so he lied to her in Japanese. Best day ever!
15 years old, happily playing my new Downward Spiral CD in the car with my mom...

i was always envious of people with siblings. when i was 12, a friend let me borrow his kill em all tape, and that changed my life. before i was listening to mostly pop and rap.
Fuck, my parents *bought* me this CD when I was in like... First grade.
My parents didn't give a fuck what I listened to. *"It's just music"* my dad used to say. I didn't even know who NIИ was at the time, for obvious reasons. My parents got me on that good shit. White Zombie, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.
My parents were strict but my dad grew up on Ted Nugent, so music did not phase him. When i was blasting Eminem, he would just say Double Live Gonzo was worse than anything i was listening to.
My grandmother found the CD in my back back and read the fucking LYRICS! With no context to the music I’m sure it looked insane. Got put in counseling for that lol.
Seeing NIN in August for my first time
https://preview.redd.it/rh3lasxpg78f1.jpeg?width=1425&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b44eea8917743a90f201625ef1aeb1a2f1e35739
13y/o me was probably too young to hear this stuff.
I got my hands on all his discs when I was in 4th grade (1996?) and it changed my life. That summer I discovered Insane Clown Posse's The Great Milenko and we got Eminem shortly thereafter. It goes without saying that my sense of humor was a little mature and twisted for my age
I convinced my mom to let me get They’re All Gonna Laugh at You when I was in 6th grade. Perusing the liner notes on the way home, I stupidly said out loud “cool, it’s got all the lyrics!” I was then subjected to my mom angrily reciting the words to Medium Pace to me before throwing the tape out the car window. I miss my mom every day, but I can definitely do without THAT memory.
Craziest memory of Freshman high school was my entire biology class broke out into a rendition of Medium Pace. Teacher is outside like “I’m not dealing with this today.”
13 year old me had the pleasure of watching my dad play piece of shit car to all of his conservative siblings after telling my aunts and uncles that I had just bought the funniest album.
Same. I had no idea Sandler put out an album. I was warming up for the 2-mile relay in 9th grade track when a teammate let me borrow her portable CD player to listen to. She had this CD loaded up. I could not stop laughing even during my race. Great memories!
We were probably 12ish and our buddies 16yo bro would play this for us in their basement. Laughed till I pissed a lil!!
“He said put up your dukes! I said, I have fucking no dukes”!
Middle school is probably the right time for Adam Sandler's material. You might be able to extend it a few years if you get "all potted up on weed"*.
*A phrase actually spoken by a Fox News morning personality.
13 year old me was DEFINITELY too young for his first album, which I had on cassette. I had no idea! Good thing I didn’t put it on in the car in the ride home with mom lol
I was 10 when I went st Sears to buy my first album.
https://preview.redd.it/fd48lt6a688f1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72f1e72444aa8fa9f2f33e7df1664eca0779f59e
Freshman year of HS we got the golf couch, who also drove the bus, to play this tape on the way to golf course practice. Entire bus full of kids enthusiastically signing Medium Pace, it was amazing.
Bloodhound Gang - Hooray for Boobies at 12. Not a big deal here in Austria. A few days ago the biggest radio station played "The Bad Touch" in the afternoon.
Marilin Manson - Mechanical Animals at 11
But I also saw a lot of things years earlier I definitely shouldn't see on TV. 1994 Senna and Ratzenberger at Imola, 1995 Srebrenica massacre, gulf war coverage, the Rwanda genocide
Music was the least concern in these years.
Prince - Diamonds and Pearls, specifically listening to "Gett Off." Was not old enough to totally understand what one can do with "a little box with a mirror and a tongue inside."
I grew up in Miami- so all the kids listened to 2 Live Crew...
Also in the late 80s and early 90s it would be blasting out of cars CONSTANTLY.
That music was pretty much the soundtrack to my youth.
When The Chronic came out I definitely had heard *tons* of explicit lyrics, but the album was a HUGE deal when it dropped
Seems to be common. My mom told me when I was younger that "I think we're alone now" by Tommy James and the Shondells from 1967 (later covered by Tiffany in the 80s) was a "dirty" song back in the day.
The old biddies really clutched their pearls when Madonna came on the scene. When Divinyls was topping the charts with a song about [female masturbation])https://youtu.be/wv-34w8kGPM) they were probably fanning themselves as not to pass out.
Me tooooi! This was my 3nd album- first lol was hootie and the blowfish (mom helped with that one can you tell) lol but I still loved it.
Music is my life even to this day. I have tickets to go see the goo goo dolls and dashboard confessional live in August- can't wait ♡
I was 13 in 1981 and was hooked by Start Me Up and the whole Tattoo You album. It was tame compared to my second album, which was Rolling Stones Hot Rocks. I grew up in a town with a population of 1000 and 5 churches. Songs like Paint it Black, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Midnight Rambler, Brown Sugar, Mother's Little Helper, Sympathy for the Devil were well beyond my life experience. Growing up in an evangelical nightmare, the Stones couldn't have been a better, that is worse, favourite band in my evangelical world. But I got this music anyway, even though a lot of their music should not have been understood by 13 year olds.
My mom and I listened to that album together, all the time. She would occasionally wonder, out loud, if she should be letting me listen to it. Like, the ship has sailed!
My grandma bought me 'Smash' and 'Ixnay on the Hombre' for my 10th birthday after I asked for them. She was always really cool about procuring me mildly questionable items at a young age, and you wouldn't have expected her to. Typical, sweet, and loving grandmother.
I remember she bought us the original Play Station to play at her house around the same time and one of the two games she bought was 'Road rash'. I just remember thinking how funny it was that my grandmother wanted ten year old me to live out a fantasy of motorcycle racing while beating people with lead pipes. Thanks grandma!
I remember being very young when this came out and I convinced my mom to take me to the music store to buy it. When the employee asked my mother if it was for her, she laughed and said it was for me (to be fair she had no idea what 2 Live Crew was…) the guy said “this is not appropriate for children” and she gasped and pulled me out of the store…
That’s my earliest memory of what I considered a cockblock 🤣
[NPR](https://www.npr.org/2023/08/10/1193106943/hip-hops-game-changer-2-live-crews-as-nasty-as-they-wanna-be) did a write up about them 2 years ago, worth the read
Funny story. Last year I bought a car off my brother and had to drive it 3000km home.
My phone was charging so I couldn't plug in my adaptor to play music at one stage so I thought I'd check the 5 CD deck.
As Nasty as They Wanna Be, first up. Man I fucking laughed so hard.
I never forget my disappointment when they sold me the version with no explicit lyrics 😢 I had to go copy a bootleg version for my friends that had the original version
Face down, ass up, that's the way I like to... OH! Honey, you okay? Don't move... I got a cramp too... Let me move this way and you, oof.
Let's just lay here a minute and get our breath back and then we'll go get a snack.
Same, age about 13… bought the tape at the mall, mom asked what I spent my money on when she picked me and friends up then made me play it in the car… so, yeah, that didn’t go well, very quiet and uncomfortable ride, tape was confiscated I was not allowed at the mall for a while 🤣
Haha this pic is exactly me
My school was on a class trip to NYC and when they were all in Saks Fifth Ave (why was this a part of a school class trip?) I snuck away to go to the Tower right across the street because I knew the Chronic just came out.
Bought a copy and returned to find the entire group was gone. Panicked and started running around thinking I was left behind, but found them a few blocks away and just integrated back into the group. Nobody noticed.
I was about the same age - first cassette I’d ever bought. Mom wanted to listen to it on the way home - first song, welcome to the jungle, as it starts says it’s not her type but that’s ok…. 2 mins in axel starts making sex noises. U turn back to Caldor and have to return it for MJ’s Bad.
Still on of my favorite albums of all time.
I bought that when I was 12. I was so nervous that the girl behind the counter would refuse to sell it to me, then she'd call mall security, and I'd have to have my parents pick me up for attempting to purchase an album with the parental advisory sticker on it.
She barely acknowledged my existence as she took my money and slapped the cassette and change onto the counter.
My introduction to popular music was my babysitter making me listen to Appetite and draw pictures of guns and roses. I'm still grateful for the experience.
Oh shit, 100 miles and Runnin' NWA and 2 Live Crew. I didn't even really know what the hell was going on, just that it was sexual! For the record, I was a nerdy little white kid. HA!!!
hmm i doubt it because i’m 81 and i was a sophomore in HS when this came out, album before was released in 1995. one of my favorite albums of all time and i still listen to it regularly.
Coolio’s It Takes a Thief. I had a very brief gangsta rap phase as a white girl in the mid 90s.
I remember reading in Seventeen that Kirsten Dunst was a Tupac fan so I definitely wasn’t the only one.
Eazy-E - Easy Does it . Didn’t buy it but got a copy of a cassette tape from my neighbor. I was 8, back in the late 80’s. Never heard cursing like that in music. To a young mind, it was like comedy.
Ice Cube Lethal Injection.
I must have been like 11-13. My mom came bursting into the room saying “what on gods green earth are you listening too!?”
But hey… she don’t take it away from me. ♥️ One of my favorite albums.
I bought GnR Lies and almost got suspended from my Catholic school is 7th grade because I gave the inside sleeve to someone and one of the teachers found it in his desk and he ratted me out.
Surprisingly my dad actually liked the Crazy Sexy Cool album. Mostly for Waterfalls, but he had a few other tracks. Definitely outside his normal taste of music.
Me too. I only had access to edited albums in the mid 90s growing up in a small town so when I got The Chronic I was like wtf. Think I was around 11 or 12
I’m shamelessly hijacking this comment…
# Metallica — The Black Album
How the actual FUCK has no one mentioned the biggest selling Metal album of all time?
While Guns N’ Roses and Metallica were touring on the legendary Guns n’ Metallica Tour, the Black album dominated the radio and MTV.
Guns N’ Roses had two of the top 3 most played songs of the year, while Metallica had another in the top 5.
C’mon, people…all this talk about violent gangster rap and literally zero talk about the highest selling albums…
It's funny because I grew up in basically the exact same situation. Then in 2016 I moved to LA and eventually ended up relatively hood-adjacent. Just off Crenshaw Blvd and really close to both Compton and Inglewood. Honestly, it's getting so gentrified now that it's a far cry from what the hip hop of our youth would have us believe.
https://preview.redd.it/m3vygkrt688f1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96189513ef1093e03aa9478a2bd80b5dbfb92e2f
GWAR when I was 11. I had Eddie Murphy Raw when I was 8 and my mom threw it in the bushes. Also Ghetto Boys when I was 12.
Dave Brockie was such a genius. Salaminizer was basically a riff on NWA’s “Gamgsta Gangsta,” and he did it a year or so after It’s release. “Road Behind,” was basically a riff at Guns n’ Roses “Patience,” and the trend of acoustic. They’re looked at as a joke band, but only after his death do I really feel like he got the credit due.
My mom pulled out my old year book from 5th grade, and I’ve got graffiti pen drawings of GWAR murdering my school mascot. We both had a laugh.
Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle
I remember listening to this on my Walkman during recess and walking around like I had the secrets to the universe in my pocket.
I used allowance money to buy it and was never caught by my parents because they never looked close enough at the “cute doggy comics” 🤣🤣🤣
requested a KD Lang cd at 15 because i had read a review that was good. I am not gay and I did not know anything about KD Lang. My uncle thought it was the funniest thing ever.
My dad was not happy when my twelve cd’s for a penny arrived from Columbia House. Every single one had a parental advisory sticker. All were returned and I was grounded for a couple weeks.
I pulled the same thing but somehow got to keep them. I would never have gotten the Doggystyle cd otherwise. Columbia House scams were a special time in history.
Columbia House wasn’t a scam, as far as I know. The scam was people ordering the 12 CDs under fake names or whatever so they didn’t have to pay. I should have phrased that differently.
A friend of mine signed her ex-bf up and picked out a bunch of CDs no 8th grader wanted. I feel like I should check on her… that was pretty diabolical at the time.
Dr. Dre’s The Chronic *was* my “too young” album. I heard “Nothing but a G Thang” and “Dre Day” on the radio and asked Mom to buy me the album. She didn’t pay attention to the parental advisory sticker. I found that Dre Day is actually called “Fuck Wit Dre Day (And everybody’s celebrating) One day my fellow Xennial brother, who was older, heard it and told Mom to actually listen to it. When she did, she took it away from me and gave it to a colleague of hers. I was ten. The year was 1993.
Quake 1 with the godly ambient soundtrack from Trent Reznor.
In 1996 in Germany at the age of 14.
After the ban.
That store clerk in that little computer shop was a mad lad.
I can still recite the entire tune top to bottom because my babysitter gave my a tape copy knowing I was interested in funk and psych music and it opened me up to a world of playful perversion as a 10 year old.
“Creamy beaver hotter than a fever
I'm a givin' 'cause she's the receiver
I won't and I don't hang up until I please her
Makin' her feel like an over achiever
I take it away for a minute just to tease her
Then I give it back a little bit deeper”
Oh yeah. That one and Mother’s Milk I think are tied for my favorite. Everything after Californication is just, “meh” to me. I have a real soft spot for One Hot Minute as well. Navarro gave them a real interesting sound even if only for one album.
I learned so much from bloodsugarsexmagik. I also had a copy of one hot minute that I had taped from a friend. Mum was driving me home from youth Orchestra with someone else from my high school and the end of pea came on. Serenaded my mum, friend and myself with 'so fxxxing what' x4. Fun times
Rage Against the Machine “Evil Empire.” Not because it was particularly vulgar, I was just way too naive to appreciate the politics. I kind of rediscovered them a few years ago and they blew my mind.
In 2004 my father ordered Chingy’s first album Jackpot from Amazon and received two copies stuck together.
Him and my mom just finalized a messy divorce at the time, so he let me have the extra copy to piss her off..
I was SIX years old LMAO
**Carnival of Carnage**, Insane Clown Posse, 1992 or 3. My 'cool uncle' taught me how to tape over the write protect tab thing on cassette so I could dub it over one of The Bible tapes.
https://preview.redd.it/pegxp3c3lb8f1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab9e41b36d6ef36c8f9f1cdb141f6dbc73c0a1b5
A friend recommended it, even I had no idea what I was in for.
snoop dogg doggystyle. I did not understand 99% of the lyrics and it had a cute cartoon on the cover I thought doggystyle meant he was pretending to be a doggy LOL
N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton. I was born in Los Angeles and partly grew up in South Central, L.A. after my rents divorced. It blew my young mind to hear cats just a few years older than myself spewing the hate that hate made unfiltered on wax. Gangbangin’ was no joke back then, lost my little brother to that mess.
I knew all the words to my salt n pepper cassette tape in 3rd/4th grade. So 8-9 years old singing about whatta mighty good man in my pink and teal Minnie Mouse bedroom..I had my older sisters influence but yeah..looking back it’s kinda funny.
[Bacdafucup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacdafucup) - Onyx
Bought it on a Boy Scout trip (away from my parents). I was 12. I'm also super white and live in the middle of a corn field 😂
As the younger brother of 2 gem x siblings I had a lot. I was recently listening to sublime realizing I was younger than my son is now (11) listening to 40 Oz to freedom. Songs about date rape, tweaking, heroin, weed, rioting. I remember telling my uncle who smoked cigarettes that he should smoke a bong not knowing what that was and had a long family talk about appropriate things to say.
Not me, but my xennial husband and his little brother picked up The Great Milenko at the mall when it was released and the little brother gave it to their mom to put in the cd player. She flliiiiiipppppped out and could not believe what they were listening to. The little brother was around 12, older was about 15. Pretty sure she hid it from them but I know they managed to find it.
I discovered it in 1999 when I was 18 and I still think it’s the best album of all time (I have a few that I consider to have this status hahah).
i remember my brother buying "limp bizkit - chocolate starfish and hot dog flavoured water."
put it on the family stereo with my parents there.
the first song hot dog kicked in...
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, E 1999 Eternal. I was maybe 12, but I had an older cousin who I visited and was listening to it. Bought it, somehow when I got home.
Jagged Little Pill in middle school. I remember my dad arguing with the manager at Media Play trying to return it and then exchanging it for Ace of Base - The Sign. I believe within a year or two I picked it out again under one of those Columbia House/BMG music “free” CDs deals.
I got Splinter by The Offspring when I was like 6-7. My favorite song was Hit That, listened to it every day. Took years before I figured out it was about sex lol
yup, Dookie was my first cassette tape that I got from Coconuts. Used to listen to it on my walkman while going to sleep! Had no idea what the lyrics meant
I remember seeing the Too Short Cocktails CD with the used condom on the cover. I had no idea what it was, lol. Thought it was like an ancient stone carving or something.
I think I was 13 when Drowning Pool - Sinner released. I had no idea what it was, I just had some cash and wanted to buy a CD because I hadn't really explored any music on my own. Took awkward at the time to ask questions and went home to see what I'd bought.
So, that snapped me out of "Whatever is on the radio" music taste as a kid.
Ice Cube - Predator
Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
Snoop Dogg - Doggy Style
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
These were literally the first four CDs I got from my parents for my 13th birthday. I also got my first portable CD player—the one that skipped if you breathed too hard 😂. For context, I was an undiagnosed/untreated ADD/Neurodiverse awkward 90s middle-class white boy 😑.
I still vividly remember the first time I heard these songs uncensored. It was a mind-blowing, eye-opening moment 🤯.
The perks of growing up during the last generation with minimal or no adult supervision or restrictions meant I was fortunate enough to listen to and experience pretty much anything I could get my hands on. Looking back, I realize I was lucky enough to be exposed to an under-appreciated slice of history. These albums planted the seeds for me to start understanding the realities of societal injustice—especially how it affects marginalized communities based on the color of their skin. That awareness helped me recognize and challenge the biases ingrained in me by my not-well-meaning boomer parents. Their ignorance and toxicity-fueled perception of reality may have seeped in deeper and taken root if not for the exposure of these amazing artists.
Sorry if I veered into a bit of a soapbox—I didn’t plan to, but it feels very relevant these days. Our generation is up and has the responsibility to shape the future, and if we fail, it’s a future where our children’s possibilities are cut short.
I got the marshall mathers LP at the ripe age of 9 lol, listened to that motherfucker all the way throughout primary/elementary school with my top three songs being
Kim
Amityville
Criminal
Honestly one of the best rap albums
Took it from my older brother, but Eazy-Duz-It…
Fourth grade, walking home from school with that on my Walkman. I knew every word of that album. Still do to this day…😂
My older brother was 5 years older than me. I pretty much had access to anything and everything, and I would just dub them on to a cassette. Occasionally I'd ask him to buy something I wanted that he didn't have, and he'd do it. I'd stash it in his collection, and dub it. Eventually my mom got hip to it and made him stop, but I'd just steal his music when nobody was paying attention and tape it. I remember one Thanksgiving while the adults were cooking all day and half drunk and my brother was out running around with my cousins, I spent the whole day and evening running in and out of my brother's room stealing and returning his music after I taped it.
I bought Kittie album Spit when I was 8 because I thought Kittie Spit was hilarious.[Turns out, my fragile little 8 year old ears were not ready for this.](https://youtu.be/KnQVMag0r5c?si=HawDFVfA6pC6sxQI)
I still have the CD, lol. Never actually listened to the whole thing. Still not my jam 25 years later.
Does anyone remember back when some retailers sold censored versions of albums? That was funny. “Here Johnny, you can have your gangster rap, without the curse words!” 🤣😂
My brother got caught in one of those old BGM music scams where they basically sign you up for life and send you 2000 cd's.
Listening to Jagged Little Pill as a 13 year old was a much different experience then than it is now.
Wu-Tang Forever in middle school. Mom bought me the censored version at Walmart so I made her get the uncensored version at The Wall. My Aunt yelled at her for buying it when she heard the song Dog Shit!
In 1992 huh? Yeah, I remember buying this exact cassette as well. Only issue was I didn't just walk in as a 12 year old and buy it because in 1992 the parental advisory sticker controversy was in full swing and no child was buying any album with that sticker without a parent.
The Chronic, Black Sunday, and Doggy Style were massive in the early/mid '90s. They were the 3 albums everyone was listening to as hip-hop was taking off here in the UK. Regulate... G Funk Era by Warren G was another, but seems to have been mostly forgotten. I listened to those 4 albums on repeat when I was 13/14 and balls deep in my brief hip-hop phase. I was probably a bit too young to be listening to that stuff in retrospect, but it didn't do any real harm apart from me, a chubby, pasty English kid, trying to dress like I was in Cypress Hill - which basically involved me growing out my curly hair, trying to grow the worlds worst bumfluff goatee, and wearing a bucket hat. It probably wasn't even the cringiest phase as a teenager.
Old Dirty Bastard at like 12 with my Dad. I was a young fat white kid, and the black lady behind the counter said, "What you know about ol dirty bastard??!" LOL
Megadeth- So far, So good, So what?
Wasn’t mine, but my older brother got a copy of 2 Live crew. Whichever album had dirty nursery rhymes on it, and was letting me listen to it. My mom came in the room with a dirty look on her face and told my brother “don’t let him listen to that” and left. He didn’t stop the tape 😂
My friend's school had a whole "wear your jeans backwards because Kriss-Kross did that" day loosely "organized" by the students. Daddy Mac'll make ya...

I got a cassette dub of this in the 5th grade. Still think about how funny it was. I can quote most of it
i bought the Regulators single cassette tape when i was in like, 4th grade. i still love that damn track.
_i got guns to my head, i think i’m goin down
i can’t believe it’s happenin’ in my home town_
Bone Thugs and Harmony Resurrection. Was probably 12-13. So not too young, but not of age.
I was at a music store and tried buying it and the girl was apologetic, but said she couldn’t do it without a parent. I said I understood. Customer who appeared to be a regular and kind of hitting on her instantly said, “oh I like that one let me get it.” Bought it and handed it to me and said enjoy boys.
Also bought a Westside Connection cd a few years before that, but I don’t think there was a story.
https://preview.redd.it/1ap0cpcex98f1.jpeg?width=4096&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a9be401cca04992ae882409c8da16dfd63aa65c
I was 12 when my parents *very* reluctantly purchased Smells Like Children after months of convincing. By 13 they were used to it/given up/didn't care about the weird shit their bizarre child was interested in.
I loved working at Tower Records 1991 to 1999 in the SF Bay Area and Seattle. My music exposure expanded like crazy. Sadly no more Tower in the US but here in Japan, there are many locations. Makes me smile to see the red and mustard yellow signs and bags.
I was a massive Madonna fan and my parents agreed to get me the Erotica album for Xmas.
To their credit, they realized that most of the album would go right over my head. It def wasn't her best, but I still liked it.
Now that I am older, I like it a lot more.
https://preview.redd.it/kluavlfng78f1.jpeg?width=872&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad21d308a34bb5367ba7015a8e5e969574d6da97
And I didn't buy it. I shoplifted 🤦🏻♀️
I didn't buy a lot of tapes at a young age--I was essentially a bootlegger, copying full plays off the radio (I remember a local station played the whole Beastie Boys tape that came out in the 80s, for some reason, and my sister and I taped it) as well as records and tapes from friends and teens I knew. And that way, I had, like, two 2 Live Crew tapes by the time I was 10 or 11. Ice Cube. Geto Boys. Too Short. And eventually that Dr. Dre tape.
My mom bought me for Christmas when I was 11/12 the South Park album. The first words of the first song were “fuck that shit”. Great album. I still listen to it as an adult.
Bitches Brew. I wasn’t ready for it, now it’s a top 5. But this probably isn’t the direction you’re going. I did get the Beastie Boys self titled when it came out, like 6 or 7th grade. So much was over my little 80s preteen head.
Can't believe how far down this is. I think I owned three copies of Downward Spiral between 1994 and 1995. My mom kept breaking them. Now Nine Inch Nails concert tickets was her birthday request this year. LOL
Thanks to the magic of mail-in CD clubs like Columbia House.... too many to count!
Dre - The Chronic
Snoop - Doggystyle
NIN - Pretty Hate Machine
Ministry - Psalm 69
Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
Guns n' Roses - Use Your Illusion
Ice Cube - The Predator
The clerks at Peaches Records declined to sell me Straight Outta Compton, so I bought the Beastie Boys' Polly Wog Stew, not anticipating it being a hardcore record and not anything like Licensed to Ill.
The Wherehouse Records across the street from Peaches didn't hesitate to sell me As Nasty As They Wanna Be, but they forgot to take the security tag off the tape and I set the alarm off.
I got God's Son by Nas when I was like 8 years old. My first ever CD, played the shit out of it from my discman while skating. I remember I'd try to make the disc skip by doing jumps to pretend I was scratching the records.
NWA Straight out of Compton
12 year old blond white girl, I convinced my nan to buy it for me with my mom because it was 18+. I told her it was a sound track to a book I was reading, I read all the time and above my grade level so she didn’t question it.

First album I ever bought when I was 13 and I had been in the US for 3 years.

I remember getting this cassette at a flea market.
Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP at 8 yrs old.
Even for most adults, that album is a bit...crazy.
Gotta say it wasn't a big problem since english isn't my first language and we used to start learn english from age 10-11, back in the day.
I had Tool's entire discography really young. I still remember having to hide the Aenima CD when putting it in the CD player, I couldn't risk a family member seeing that.
Doggystyle by snoop
Went pakistan and bought it there. I was living so dangerously listening it on the family tape deck
All that swearing etc
Though now I acknowledge that it was probably because English wasn't the first language of my parents and they had a tough time of understanding rap
But man I felt so gangster then
Appetite for Destruction and 2 Live Crew. My parents tried to confiscate my 2 Live Crew cassette and I switched it with a Vanilla Ice tape someone gave me.

My parents bought this for my 11th birthday (along with “MTV’s Party to Go volume 1”) because they were so out of touch with society and had no idea what it was
Didn’t buy it but we passed a cassette version of N.W.A 100 miles and running around in grade 4 at school I was 9/10 years old shortly after we all found 2 Live Crew same year , good times 🤣
https://preview.redd.it/8x2rwnqav88f1.jpeg?width=315&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=560b25f0b4c5dc2aaee6f468eb615301ccd4b1bd
I was around 9yo lol. I got the cassette.
Probably Onyx's **Shut Em Down** at 12. Coolio's **Gangsta's Paradise** at 10 was probably questionable but Onyx fucked HARD on that album. I still go back to it constantly...hell, now that it's been brought up I kinda have to.
I got Without You I'm Nothing by Placebo, early teens. Loved the music and the feel of the album and Brian has a very unique voice. I didn't realise at the time (as a straight guy) the whole album was about being gay, aids, rentboys etc. Great album, still got it!
I think I was 14 when I bought Schoolly D “Am I Black Enough For You?” Like really, how was my suburban white ass supposed to get this album. When my parents picked me and my buddy up from the record shop they looked at it and said out loud “Pussy Ain’t Nothing…. Hmm, what a curious title for a song….”
My dad gave No More Tears by Ozzy Osbourne when I was 10 years old. I remember my fourth grade teacher asking us what our favorite albums were and looking horrified at my answer. On the bright side I probably didn’t understand what the hell he was singing about in those creepy ass songs.
When I was 10, I thought Slayer's Reign in Blood was a great album (older cousin made me a copy on cassette and asked, "You wanna hear some real heavy guitars?")
At 45, I still think it's a great album.
I had Green Day - Dookie in elementary school. I know some stuff was over my head but I was about the vibes. I also took a long shot and asked my Mom to let me buy a Pastor Troy cd. She thought it was a gospel album.
This one. You had to have an adult ask for it at the counter. I quickly put my thumb over the parental advisory sticker while my dad considered it. We both made mistakes that day.
I was 11 when I gave my metalhead uncle the money and had him by me the cassette tape of 2 Live Crews - As Nasty as They Wanna Be within the first few days it was released at the Sam Goody in the mall near where I lived.
All Eyez On Me came out 2 days after I turned 14. Thankfully the kid behind the counter at Sam Goody didn't care about the warning label. As a Midwestern white boy, that shit blew my mind.
Doggystyle. I held my thunb over the parental advisory.
My mom caught me listening to it and made me trade it to my friend for Dance Mix 95.
That opening toilet piss.... chefs kiss.
I'll bite — Dead Kennedys' *Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death* as well as *Bedtime for Democracy*...
I remember going up to BASF records (I think that’s what it was called) in Melbourne’s Doncaster Mall and picking up the vinyls.
The girl at the register asked me something like “What are they like?” - I blurted out, “They’re good,” then left with the records — I was 11 and had never listened to a note of the DKs.
My best friend’s older sister had told us, young skaters, that the Dead Kennedys were skaterock, that a lot of skaters listened to them.
Looking for a change from the Beastie Boys’ *Licence to Ill* we had on a loop and interested in all things vaguely associated with skate culture, I picked them up.
Had no clue.
The *Bedtime for Democracy* album had a newspaper inside called *Fuck Farts*, which served as a photocopied collage inspiration for years to come.
I got into the DKs later, much later — and then the lyrics made sense, as did the whole thing...
EASY-E and N.W.A right before this album after they broke up for good. I was in the 6th grade when I first got my recording of it from a friend, lol.
Shout out to Too Short!
Prince's "Diamonds & Pearls" album. My aunt took us Christmas shopping, and when I asked for a CD with a parental advisory sticker, she asked if I were allowed to have that. My 5-years-older sibling had a few parental advisory CD's, so OF COURSE they probably would be OK with 12yo me having one.
Most of the sex references went over my head, but for this one:
>I clocked the jizz from a friend
Of yours named Vanessa Bet (Bet)

I remember thinking, "I understand that reference! This is so she can practice French kissing!"

Too young and too innocent to be listening to this.
I used to listen to The Chronic and Doggystyle all the time. My mom turned my CD player on in my room when I was at school while she was cleaning and was horrified. Well, I’m not sure she was horrified. She brought it up saying how awful the language was on whatever she heard, but didn’t take them from me.
I was 12 in 1976, I bought my first album.
Richard Pryor, "Bicentennial N......
My parents took it away promptly I heard them laughing to it later that night. It was filthy.
https://preview.redd.it/9kthbr05t78f1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca040197adf544b055c5adc6c05f1f06993ae8e3
My mom would have thrown this away if she knew I was listening to "The Misadventures of Shit Man" when I was 10
I’m embarrassed to say that I listened to this when I was waaaay too young…
“Let's see, hmm, well I'd have to think about it
I might show up in a tux, ha! But I doubt it
I'd probably just show up naked like I always do
And look your mama in the eye and tell her fuck you!
Hurry up bitch I'm hungry, I smell spaghetti
I'd pinch her loopy ass and tell her get the food ready!
Your dad would probably start trippin', and get me pissed
I'd have to walk up and bust him in his fuckin lips!
It's dinner time, while hearin' grace from your mother
I pull a 40 out and pour some for your little brother
I'm steady, staring at your sister, I'll tell you this
You know for only thirteen she got some big tits!
After that, your dad would try to jump again
And only this time I'd put the 40 to his chin!
After your mom does the dishes and the silverwear
I'd dry fuck her 'till I nut in my underwear!”
For my 10th birthday I drug my mom to WalMart to buy Arrested Development’s 5 months 3 days… album. I loved the message of Mr. Wendel and I thought Tennessee was the coolest thing I had ever seen or heard.
I showed the video of Mr. Wendel to my mom to convince her, “it was playing on MTV at least once every couple hours at this point.
We get to the store and head to the music section and the album was sold out! I panicked that my opportunity to get something was rapidly closing and picked up,
Public Enemy: Fear of a Black Planet
10 year old me remembered hearing some positive things about it and it had been out for a while so there were a bunch of copies “tapes”.
We took it to the checkout in the smaller Walmart music section. The employee had to remove the tape cassette from a thick plastic protected cover attached to prevent theft and make sure the cover art of the album wasn’t showing.
There were four parental advisory stickers on the case.
I handed it to the clerk who The looked at my mom and said, “you sure you want to buy him this?”
Mom asked, “this is the one?”, to me and I nodded “yes”
Went home and ran to my room to jam it on my boombox. At first was just super disappointed at the aggressive cacophony that blared out that was so unlike the cool harmonies of what I was expecting from Arrested Development.
Then 911 is a joke came on and I started vibing and had to turn it down because my older sister was bitching about what the hell was I listening to.
Played it for the rest of the summer and showed it off at sleepovers over the next year.
https://preview.redd.it/1bdtkrbkn78f1.jpeg?width=652&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9128fd8d404aada44a3a3bd5f7ce630a606c21aa
I was too poor to buy records, but by chance I found this gem in the parking lot of my aunts car port . I was 11
We used to blast Eazy-E in third grade. By 4th grade whenever we were going to hang out with the girls in our neighborhood we would of course refer to them as going to kick it with the ho's 😂
I didn't know what the name meant, but I told my grandma it's all I wanted for my birthday. Sure enough, she got me the cassette, and I got weeks of enjoyment out of it too. Until my mom read the lyrics insert.
Years later, thinking back, it finally dawned on me. At some point in late 1993, my 60-something year-old grandmother drove herself to the mall, walked into the Sam Goody, and told some very confused teenager behind the counter that she absolutely had to have >!*Doggystyle*!<.
(Solid album. Thanks, grandma!)
My brother gave me a movie called “Gift” when I was 15.
It was a film made by Perry Farrell and his girlfriend Casey Niccoli and had some scenes of Jane’s Addiction playing live, but it was the first time I ever was exposed to full frontal male and female nudity.
So… not an album, but… as someone who was watching Saved by the Bell and Hey Dude, that was a bit much. Haha
When I was 10, my parents asked what kind of music I wanted to listen to and I, a little white girl in Canada, said 'rap'. And they got me a west coat mixed rap tape. It had Ice T, 2 Live Crew, World Class Wrecking Crew ( dr dre"s first group), King Tee and others on it. All mid 80s early west coat rap.
A lot of it had electro dance elements and I used to dance to it in our basement. I didnt understand the lyrics but I liked the rhyming and record scratching.
One of the more silly songs was a song called ' Big Butt" about a rapper who talked about having a big butt. Of all the songs involving, like, guns - the tape got taken away when my dad came downstairs and I was singing to the Big Butt song. I had been listening to it for a year at least. Of all the songs..... like how did they not notice one of the songs was 'Ya Better Bring a Gun'?
I grew up poor as fuck, so just to let you know, I was one of the reasons that they had security tags. To answer your question, though, King Missile - Happy Hour was my favorite album that I ever stole from Tower Records
This was me and all of my middle school compatriots listening to Chronic 2001 on our 8th grade beach trip. Somehow the school thought it would be a good idea to send several buses full of horny 8th graders to the beach with a handful of teachers as chaperones that were absolutely not capable of keeping us contained. Much debauchery ensued.
It’s funny because my hippie-ish cousin approved of “Fantastic Voyage” because it was “pro-people, not pro-gangsta.” Then the rest of the album was pro-gangsta
i got that album from the Columbia House "8 cds for 1¢" my mom let me and my siblings pick one. i intercepted the package while she was at work so she couldn't see the parental advisory sticker on it
**Metallica** — Black Album
How the actual FUCK has no one mentioned the biggest selling Metal album of all time?
While Guns N’ Roses were touring on the legendary Guns n’ Metallica Tour, the Black
album dominated the radio and MTV.
Guns N’ Roses had two of the top 3 most played songs of the year, while Metallica had another in the top 5.
C’mon, people…all this talk about violent gangster rap and literally zero talk about the highest selling albums…
Same. My mom bought it for me and she didn’t even know it. I slipped it between two other non-explicit lyrics CDs and she never noticed. To this day I can’t believe I got away with that.
I was 11 when I got my hands on NWA’s N**z4Life thanks to a friend with a cool mom. A few of us were blasting it in my room when my mom stormed in, shook her head, said “nope,” yanked the CD, and walked out.
Didn’t realize till college I was deep in suburban cultural appropriation, but hey, it was the early ’90s.
I didn’t buy it but my best friend and I listened to her older sister’s bootleg copy of the banned 2 Life Crew album. While I knew about sex at 11, I certainly didn’t know you could do all of those things lol.
This 💯
Some of the “skits” on that album were just totally unnecessary. Additionally, in time I realized that it was really just Parliament-Funkadelic that I was into.
