You have a fair point, but even the 3/Y have extraordinary cost cutting measures in the interior that aren’t appropriate for the price. For example, no gauge cluster, every single control (even the glovebox) is hidden in some menu in the screen, pre 2025 models lack the ability to control heated seats in the back.

I might be in the minority but I still think Maserati can be salvaged as a brand. They still have a ton of brand cache from non car people despite doing everything possible to throw it away over the past 2 decades.

If they suddenly started making good cars again I think they'd have a real chance at revival.

Biggest thing they need to fix is the perceived ownership costs though. Most people who are semi wealthy aren't even going to consider buying a Maserati considering they will lose half their investment in the span of 24 months.

I know people here hate the Chinese buying up brands, even if those brands have been putting out horrendously unreliable cars that depreciate like rocks - but the Chinese are exactly who are needed here. Maserati has good recognition in China, so there'll be reason for them to buy it.

Set it up with some great designers, a reliable Chinese EV platform, keep building it in Italy to dodge US/EU tariffs with the same level of luxury - and cars like the Ghibli and Quatroporte start to become attractive propositions, and the SUVs become volume sellers to compete with the likes of the Macan and Cayenne.

Obviously the ICE powertrains will be missed, but I'd rather have Maserati around, building luxurious, fast and comfortable cars than not at all.

The gear select buttons are straight garbage. They don't even engage 100% of the time, it's dangerous. Stupid screens for every control, volume on the passenger side what a dumb decision. If the driver wants to adjust they need to reach over or push the cheap Stellantis parts bin button on the rear of the steering wheel.

Grecale uses the same engine as the Giulia/Stelvio and is rated at the same HP (engine alone). The mild hybrid part is actually what I dislike (but is a more personal choice), which does eliminate some lag, that said, the performance of the base model and Stelvio at least is very, very close.

Persoanlly, I like to gun it from every single light, and I didn't feel much diff. Stelvio has an initial hesitation, but that's actually down to stupid mapping of the accelerator (fixable with a dongle).

To put into actual numbers, I do 5.7+/0.1 sec 0-60 in my Stelvio routinely. They should've aimed for 5.0 for the base model, 4.6 for the medium trim. The V6, I assume would have been a struggle as the Stevio Q already has very good numbers and rturns become dminishing.

Competing with the Germans is what got Maserati in their current mess. The Ghibli was a stupid 5 series competitor and is almost singularly responsible for the hit to their reputation.

BMW and Porsche are in different price brackets for the most part. M cars start at $65K. A Maserati cheaper than that doesn't make sense for the brand. Besides, in the new combined strategy where Alfa and Maserati will be versions of each other, Alfa will be the direct BMW competitor and Maserati will sit above that. It won't compete directly with Porsche because that's not Maserati's identity.

They'll target more of the Aston Martin position - not sure how much good that will do as Aston aren't exactly lighting up sales charts, but Maserati is mainly a GT brand and wants to stay that way.

Had a Grecale as a loaner. That car was mostly style over substance, on bar for the Maserati brand. Don't be fooled by the interior looking nice in photos, poke around a bit and it has the build quality faults expected of Stellantis. Ergonomics/tech were a massive point of frustration as well. The car is a complete wash vs the Macan, which has been out for 10 yrs. It's only positive over the Porsche is less understeer.

They started to dilute their brand image by trying to become a Mercedes/BMW competitor and started to offer stuff like the Ghibli that they were still selling through 2023. The Ghibli was a horrendous car especially in its pre-facelift form being a 60K car with an interior from a 30K Chrysler 300.

Pretty sure Maserati sales since about 2016 have solely been because of lease specials to undercut the Germans just like how Infiniti has survived since around the time. That business works for a few years and then the ice gets too thin when you've ruined your brand social equity especially in the luxury space and can't afford the R&D to invest in new products.

You can buy a used Ghibli for like 20k where I live, for the same amount you can get the same year same mileage BMW but if you drive a Maserati you're more likely to get attention in the Maserati, because to people that aren't too into cars its still in a class above BMW's and such.

Well, yes and no. Yes, in that the Ghibli was reasonably popular; but no, because it sold and leased for blowout prices, depreciated terribly, and did nothing to elevate the Maserati brand, either for reliability ratings or prestige.

Put another way, you see a ton of recent Ghiblis at buy-here-pay-heres and other such undesirable places and they are generally less respectable than a a Corolla. Not the makings of a successful prestige automaker, especially when Maserati would like to think of itself as being in the same hallowed tier as Porsche and the Range Rover sub-brand.

Maserati is a weird combination of good and bad quality. Likewise, their leathers and tanning are excellent. And the carbon fiber with copper weave is one of my favorite interior touch points in the entire industry. But then they screw it up with Fiat buttons and a touch screen with dead spots that makes you feel like gramps who doesn't understand capacitive tech.

The issue with Maserati is simple: they've been saddled with piss poor management and parent companies for decades. Citroen, De Tomaso and now Chrysler.

Their story isn't much different than Lamborghini. Imagine if Maserati ended up at VAG in the early 90s instead of Lambo and Lambo got to try and compete while being owned by the family of a military junta.

This is something I don't understand about Stellantis. They essentially had the same setup as VW Group: some budget brands mixed in with premium brands and some exotics. But VW Group decided to just shared everything except interiors. So a Porsche Macan, Lamborghini Urus, and VW Toureg may technically be the same car underneath, but absolutely nothing a customer sees or touches would really give that away.

It's like FCA and Stellantis were the only companies to not figure out how rebadging actually works. The group is a bunch of cats running around. There's no organization to any of it.

Clearly you've never been inside a Ghibli, it's nowhere near as bad as you make it seem, just because there's a few buttons in common with a Chrysler doesn't mean it's the same interior. They should have done some stuff different, sure, but their budget was limited, and some decisions were off. Porsche did it better, they sold Macans with the exact same 4cylinder as in a skoda/vw and customers didn't bat an eye 😄 The Ghibli was decent for when it came out, the problem is they didn't update and improve on it as they should. They still ended up releasing one of the highest top speed 4 doors in the world, so there's that.

The problem with Maserati is they've taken too long to enter these luxury segments, their management does some very questionable decisions, and dodgy dealership experience is also to blame. For example, it would have been better for Maserati to start using the Alfa Giorgio-derived architecture early on, they took way too long to do it, only recently with the Grecale.

Porsche released the Cayenne in 2002, Maserati took 14 years to follow with Levante. Then Macan in 2014, again Maserati took 8 damn years to release the Grecale. So yeah they've had a big problem with management, and even the design has been questionable, the Grecale is not exactly a masterpiece. But hey so isn't the current Macan and they still sell plenty. 💁

I think GM would do good with Maserati. They need a ultra luxury brand to move upmarket. Cadillac is good for luxury, and they are attempting that with the Celestiq, but that's soft luxury.

The C8 has shown that GM can do great sports cars. But a Maserati badge allows them to reach for more margins.

They can re-enter Europe with this boutique brand.

And finally, in recent years, there is no vehicle released by GM that is objectively bad. Every vehicle is hitting their segment very well. I think this disciplined approach would do Maserati very well.

But Ferrari doesn't want to dilute their brand too much; the Purosangue starts at $400k and quickly passes $500k (partially due to its amazing V12, active suspension, and platform shared with the Roma) because it has to prove that it's a "real Ferrari" and not a cash-grab SUV. I doubt they want to further dilute their brand with an SUV in line with an S Class Maybach, Bentayga, Cayenne, or Lucid Gravity, nor an EV that's any slower than a Rimac. Regaining Maserati as a downmarket brand would allow them to experiment with models like those, which could sell between $100k and $300k.

You see this in lots of other industries from fashion to hotels, and it makes sense for Ferrari to safely expand downmarket while protecting their brand.

I think the brand definitely could be revived but it’s been in a weird spot for a while now in that people who know cars won’t buy one because the value/quality is just not there but you do still have people that buy them just because they know the name but not much else.

If whoever buys them bumps up the quality and finds good market points to list some stuff and maybe offers a few 50-60k area options that are well built and competitive as entry level options I could see the brand getting some credibility back.
