Struggling CFI

Hello,
I am a CFI in the North Houston area and I am struggling to find any work. I went to every school in my area and was told to return with a CFII. I returned to all of these schools two months later with my CFII, and nobody is hiring. I am checked out at a few local flight clubs but cannot get students for independent instruction. I have made Facebook posts, I hang around the local airport, but it seems all my efforts are wasted. I know the job market is bad right now, but can any independent CFI’s give me advice on how to get more business?

Come to Southern California and be my CFI! Ha

Sounds like things are the way there were when I was flying late 1980s thru 1990s. Way more instructors than students. After more than a decade of flying and no jobs I gave up my youthful dream and pursued normal jobs which was made difficult because i blew my 20s and early 30s on flying rather than building a real career. Its all about timing. You can be the most motivated pilot in the world but if timing isnt right, and there is no way to know when timing is right, you arent getting a flying job. Period. My advice for what it is worth...think of another career you would like. Pretend flying is not in the cards for you. What would you like to do instead? Start down that route. Hopefully it is something that pays enough for you to live comfortably. Start paying off any debts as quickly as you can. Debt will end your flying faster than anything. Keep your flying current as a hobby since it isnt paying for itself now anyway. Keep looking for flying gigs. They usually dont pay well so its good to have a real job. You may get lucky and find a workable flying job. If you dont find a workable flying job you will be working in something you like and didnt waste your best years messing around with aviation. If you have to forget about flying like most of us did you probably wont miss it much at that point. Sometimes I wonder why I bothered with flying. The answer is that Id hate myself if I didnt try. But chasing flying dreams ruined my love for flying and didnt do the rest of my life any good. The dream became a nightmare. Now Im over it. Its been 25 years and Im only now starting to have any interest in flying again, but only casual interest. I have no intention of getting near an actual airplane again.

This is probably the most real piece of advice I’ve read on this sub in many months
Way to many try-hard, do or die types here that just want to be told what they want to hear and justify their opportunity costs

hey i’m a student pilot with 12 hours looking for a cheaper cfi. lmk maybe we can do a lesson together

Be ready to move to a different part of the country for very low pay for a few years as the hiring market comes back
tobyricecfi@reddit
Niche down. Be different. Stand out from the noise of literally every other CFI in your shoes. When I’m hiring, I look for the guy who’s different. It’s almost always in the articulation. How you think. How you present yourself as the solution.
Examine why people should hire you and not someone else. If you can’t think of any reasons why they should, figure out what things everyone else is doing wrong or badly or a pain point of students and schools and go become the guy that fixes all those problems.
Seeing the good things everyone else is doing and trying to mimick is why you can’t stand out. Instead look for the bad stuff, the pains, then fix them once and for all.
The person that most clearly articulates the problem in solvable terms wins

I have 1900tt 1500 dual given welcome to the club lol

Best advice I can give you is go back to mom and pops house and get a regular job time build or save all the money to buy your own plane and wait till shit gets better
Pilot-Imperialis@reddit
This is a pain across the country right now, so your best bet is to spread your search nationwide if at all possible.
I will say in the current climate having hour CFII is the new minimum qualification to get hired so keep looking. If you want to look more attractive, triple rated is the new standard to be considered ideal.
flyfasteatas@reddit
Visit flight schools in person and drop off a resume. Shake hands with the chief, assistant chief, or the manager. We’ve hired a few people that did exactly that. It leaves an impression and is a way to distinguish yourself from the avalanche of resumes most places receive online. Smaller flight schools especially appreciate it. Other than that, apply for non-flying aviation jobs. Line fueler, aircraft porter, dispatcher, etc. Ask any of the flight schools you’re looking at if they’re hiring for other positions and apply for those. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door. Other than that, the market is tough right now. A lot of CFI hiring in this market comes down to who you know or who you can make an impression on.

Expand your search nationwide and just move for it.

Go find another job and build hours.

Texas is obviously a big state.
If you were in AZ, I’d suggest you join the AZBAA and go to meetings/network there.
I found this on a random google search. At least worth looking into. Maybe going to a meeting, golf event, or clay shooting event could be valuable networking experience. Or it could be a wash. But at least you’d be looking into an avenue off the radar of most folks.

Hey there! I actually finished my CFII last march (2024) at Conroe airport. I am in exactly the same boat as you. I ended up finding 1 student on here by posting something similar to this. He passed his PPL, but we haven’t flown since December since he passed. I have had a total of 4 students but most have dropped out due to money constraints or just life happening (having a kid ect.) and I have been to every flight school and aero club in the city and outskirts and can confirm NOBODY is hiring. I talk to people who are only CFI and ask how they got the job and it’s always “I trained here”. It is what it is. If you can’t get a job at your own school, you’re pretty cooked. I live in Pearland and would be willing to go back to KCXO but they have a few 1500+ guys who aren’t leaving and so nothing is opening up.

Don't have any words of encouragement for you other than to say it seems the pain is universal right now. The flying club I'm a member of (11 airplanes and 22 instructors) has seen a steep decline in bookings of around 50% (both club rental and instruction).
ltcterry@reddit
Attend FAASteam meetings. Hand out cards. Consider CAP - it's not paid but it's instruction. Once you get started it will grow. You just have to be an above average instructor. Deliver what people need. Word of mouth will grow once there's something to grow.
Go get a regular job. Take care of yourself while you look.
It's not easy, I know.
Busy-Bank-1896@reddit
CAP is a lousy way to get hours. it takes about eight months to break into the old boys club.. gotta do the MS, MO etc before they wevne consider giving you the TMP. there are already enough old fogey instructors in CAP that they wont let a newbie instructor waltz in and fly 'their' aircraft. They want to see you are really invested before you are one of them. The local unit near to me is full of pilots , about 50.. but only about ten of the old boys get to fly regularly..
Square_Ad8756@reddit
I’m in a similar boat to OP, I am luckily on my flight school’s waiting list to start teaching as CFIs leave and am in the process of joining CAP. I plan on picking up as much CAP flying as possible and rent a twin as much as I can afford.
RevolutionaryWear952@reddit
Get business cards and leave three each tacked to the FBO board. Go back and refill. That $25 investment has netted more than I can figure.
RadeZayben@reddit
I know you just got your CFII and saying “go back and spend more money” sucks to hear, but in this current market you need a niche or experience.
Tailwheel, multi-engine, specialize in LSA and do SPL certs. As an independent CFI you need to separate yourself from the “norm” because there’s thousands of people who can fly a 172/Cherokee and do someone’s PPL or instrument
JustAnotherDude1990@reddit
Having a few more hours of multi engine doesn’t really seem to help the hiring these days.

Welcome to the industry. Keep up the networking. I was a line boy back in the day when things were lean, 95-99. I guess I was personable enough to catch a few gigs here and there being a copilot. Even flew the Beech Starship a few flights. I made enough connections in a year to get so dammed busy I was turning away jobs. Got a few letters of recommendation and about 200 hrs of TP and jet time. I never slept, was broke af, but in my early 20s, IDGAF.
Apart_Dentist_4327@reddit
I’m also a CFII/MEI in north Houston. Can confirm nobody seems to be hiring. All the flight schools are full up and it’s slim pickings for students at multiple aero clubs (more cfis than prospective students).
Best bet is to continue to apply and network, stay current and keep flying. If you are open to move places (I am not unfortunately), apply for schools in different cities or states. Or even go for the survey pilot gig in Ohio. Lots of hours
CodGroundbreaking407@reddit
Do you know anywhere specifically that does survey in Ohio?
Apart_Dentist_4327@reddit
Google VFR survey pilot jobs. Lots of companies. Just be aware you will sign a lengthy contract that you will owe on if you leave early. And you will make next to no $$ but it is hours.
Slots are competitive. The schedule will be restrictive. But from what I’ve heard from friends who have done it, it’s great flying experience and will objectively make you a better pilot.
