I’m an international military student stationed in the U.S. I’m on the random drug testing list today and every time I have to report to the UA office I’m assigned an observer and have to pee with my pants/briefs around my knees and shirt up while someone watches. Why so many tests here?

Such an awkward procedure , stand at the urinal at a 45 degree angle, drop my uniform and drawers down to my knees and hold my undershirt up while an active duty Sailor observes the urine leave the body and enter the bottle.

Uncle Sam does not play about drug use. After Vietnam they saw how drug use in the field affected their abilities. So they came down hard. If its not caffeine, nicotine, or molten your ass is grass.

That's awkward?! I had to provide a sample at 38 weeks pregnant with a 16 pound baby! I was a captain in the USAF at the time, so yeah, someone had to witness that.

Former soldier here: 1) the US is really fucking puritanical when it comes to drugs. People really like to pearl clutch and want to exert the Christian morals over others. 2) Practically speaking it’s mostly about readiness. If you got a mission coming up a commander must have his troops ready to execute and if your troops are high they won’t be ready. 3) Cruelty is the point. If it were just about readiness then they’d cheek swab test you to find out if you were using marijuana in the last 48 hours but instead they keep the pee test because (it’s also cheaper to have one test) they can get you if your smoked any time in the last month and want to nail your ass.

It's to make sure you don't fill the cup with another person's piss. Do not take it personally. Additionally, if you have difficulty pissing while someone watches you, know you are not the only one. Drinking something with caffeine may help you pee if you are having difficulty.

Because drug use is common at training commands, so they test more there. Nobody at the command makes the list, it's generated at the TYCOM level
