ULPT Request: How can 17-year-olds get a hotel
Posted by Fresh_Definition_368@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 321 comments
Hey everyone,
Me and a couple of friends (all 17) are planning to go to Anime Expo in LA. We've got the money, tickets, and our parents' full permission—but we hit a roadblock: almost all hotels require you to be 18 or even 21 to check in.
Our parents are cool with the trip but can't come with us due to scheduling conflicts. We just need a place to stay for four nights. Anyone know a sneaky workaround or loophole to help us get a room without running into age restrictions?
(We’re not looking to trash the place or party—just need somewhere to sleep and shower.)
Appreciate any advice or creative solutions!
Tasty_Pea6395@reddit
Check the hotel. You said "almost" which isn't "always". And if not then just lie. Or steal ur parents phone number and email and account. That probably will work better. Have fun!
b1ondestranger@reddit
Some hotels let you check in using their app- you never have to go to the front door. I’ve done it at two airport Hilton’s.
TJNel@reddit
Use your parents Hilton account to check in and get a digital key.
dinkinflickas@reddit
Just stayed in one last week, I’m a member. You still have to stop by front desk and show ID.
brittm1290@reddit
Not a guarantee to work. I’ve stayed at Hilton properties and sometimes the app tells me I need to go to the front desk when I attempt to check in digitally.
TJNel@reddit
Have the parent put the kid as a guest and then go down and get a key. Your dad is out getting food and the app isn't working.

some hotels require an ID of the person who booked the hotel.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
Not if they are obviously children - I worked for Hilton for over a decade and was a director. I don’t ID kids for room keys not with being screamed at by the parents.
One-Significance7853@reddit
So, if someone knows that a person is staying at a Hilton with their child, they just need to send a child to the front desk to ask for a new room key? That seems like an obvious security gap.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
Y’all live online way too much. Yes because all criminals have access to children to send to front desks to demand keys to rooms. Like ?
Touch some grass dude - this isn’t a spy thriller.
One-Significance7853@reddit
Of course, no parents that have kids commit crimes, no uncles or aunts are criminals, and criminals would never kidnap or purchase a child.
Did you seriously just suggest that people who commit crimes can’t access children? Obviously you shouldn’t have kids, we have enough low IQ people as it is.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
You must be Q-anon or republican - I’ve never encountered a purchased child.
And as far as parents or guardians using kids to commit crimes. That’s why Hilton has the legal time and insurance for stupid shit like this.
Like for gods sake all these anime nerds got to do is give the name, address, and phone number and if the deal agent is cosplaying as a Q anon conspiracy theorist they can get a room key. Jesus tap dancing Christ.
One-Significance7853@reddit
Nobody said this was common, it’s just an obvious security gap that could be exploited.
It’s very strange how defensive you have been regarding this. It’s very obvious that giving a room key to someone without ID is a potential security risk, and it’s insane to argue otherwise.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
you ever hear of probability? we can talk all day about bad parents, weird uncles, and child traffickers.
at the end of the day - like I said before: Parents check in digital key, youngest member of the anime group says mommy and daddy left them their without a key, they give the name, address, and phone number on file, god speed.
As far as this security exploit you found? prove me wrong find 1 case on google where this crime has happened to someone.
Bottom line - this is extremely low probability. I am not going to be a creep and second guess a literal child at the front desk thinking OMG what if they are an accomplice in a crime?
Crawl back to your Q-Anon side of reddit and say hi to Jim Cavielzel for me.
BilllisCool@reddit
You’re not gonna find examples of this security exploit because nobody is giving away keys to someone just because they have a name, phone number, and address these days at any reputable place. Maybe some random motel or something, but there’s plenty of examples of human trafficking taking place at those. You may have done it, but you’re correct that nefarious activity is rare overall, so nothing ever happened. If everyone was doing it, some examples might start popping up.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
all i heard was "I can't find 1 example on this thing happening so I am going to reassert what I said before," time to turn off the computer.
BilllisCool@reddit
I haven’t said anything to you before. I’m also using a phone.
Healthy_Brain5354@reddit
They’re probably not going to be staying at the Hilton
jtfarabee@reddit
You mean Kevin’s strategy in Home Alone 2 is a rare instance of a movie thing working in real life?

Your post or comment was removed for violating rule 12: No politics.
Backpacker7385@reddit
You’re assuming they were already checked in, right? Would you check in a kid without a parent present?
Colombian_Vice@reddit
You didn’t read the comments above - they checked in with digital key 🔑 on the app.
“Hey mom and dad checked in via the app but digital key isn’t working. They have gone out can I have a key to my room”
Again obvious kid I’d give them a key
Backpacker7385@reddit
No, you didn’t read above. They attempted to check in on the app and it didn’t work, and they were directed to the front desk to complete check in. I’ve had this happen many times.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
Holy crap - yeah I know - as long as the credit card works and they give the parents name on file like address and phone number - they can still get a key and complete check in.
Seriously y’all make this way over complicated for no reason.
Backpacker7385@reddit
I would guarantee you are violating Hilton policy. If I can’t get a room key to my room as a lifetime diamond member without showing ID, I’d be really pissed to see a 17 year old get handed one.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
Seriously ? WOW ok
If you work at Hilton they need to terminate you and go with someone else
Diamond guests you never ID them it’s part of their privilege for speedy check ins, those asshole literally get offended if you ask for their credit card. They call diamond desk, take your name, then you find yourself adding 10,000 points to their Hilton account. Diamond privilege is stating their name - they get their key and they go on their way.
What policy ? Do you not know the difference between franchise and corporate policy ? Do yourself a favor and call the diamond desk and they will say exactly as I laid out above.
And finally - my caveat was if they LOOKED LIKE A CHILD - like holy shit pick the youngest member of the damn group to say mommy and daddy left them there and got locked out of the room.
Like bruh if you were on my staff I would have fired you immediately for being so rigid. You act like policy can’t be flexible ? That’s the whole point of diamond to through your weight because you spend six figures at hotels 🏨 and get special privileges. If you do work at hotels - you def never made it to management.
Backpacker7385@reddit
I don’t work at Hilton, I’m a diamond guest. I get ID’d about 50% of the time. Good to know that I can start racking up points every time it happens though, thanks for that tip.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
You’re so cool dude you spend six figures of your companies money to travel for business that you don’t pay for yourself. Like outside of the world of Hilton so you really think you’re THAT Important? Lmao
And you conceded my point - you yourself said even you get ID 50% of the time Witch proves me right in the end 💅
The amount of points you get will never satisfy the diamond size ego you have - have fun being a corporate slave and NEVER seeing your family. As a diamond guy you obviously know that’s 130 nights plus a year right ?
And if your single bruh good luck with any relationship - ain’t no one wants to put up with that kind of travel. In the end diamond guests are the loneliest assholes that stay at Hilton. Take your points :) your life still sucks.
Backpacker7385@reddit
130 nights? Are you sure you work for Hilton? It’s 60 nights or 30 stays. 30 stays is EASY.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
I’ve retired from Hilton prior to the pandemic so whatever 60 nights ?
Still - you are the exact asshole those desk agents hate. Some person that thinks they are so self important because their diamond and would work the system to get extra points because they got fragile egos. Please realize that no one likes you - just because you spend corporate daddies money doesn’t make you the big shot diamond guy you obviously think you are. Have the plebs grovel at your feet just know on the street you ain’t shit.
RadioSlayer@reddit
I hate him and I don't even work for Hilton. I just have seen so many people like this at check in
Colombian_Vice@reddit
you got my point exactly :) thanks luv I was starting to think I was crazy o_O
Backpacker7385@reddit
Idk what you’re talking about, or why you’re projecting so hard. I said I’ve never asked for bonus points or complained, I didn’t even know that was a thing you could do.
I’m glad you’re not in the industry anymore. Checking people in without ID is how people get trafficked.
Colombian_Vice@reddit
Sure :) you haven’t - Mr diamond guy
RadioSlayer@reddit
You're so cool dude.
TJNel@reddit
Only time that I have seen that was when I wasn't listed as a guest.
doctorpotterhead@reddit
I used to work for the Hilton and the person getting the first key (at least at my location) had to be the name on the reservation with an ID or you can kick rocks.

Bring a trench coat just in case this happens, so two or three of you can pretend to be a parent…
JustPlainRude@reddit
I tried this for the first time yesterday and the app did in fact tell me to check in at the front desk.

This. I’m old and after a 6 hour flight it’s fucking annoying
akos_beres@reddit

cmb211@reddit
ya this won't work. Hilton still makes you check in and give an ID for who the reservation is under.
Clear-Implement-9290@reddit
No guarantee it will happen. I am middle aged and they have required me to check in at the desk.
callthecopsat911@reddit
Slight ULTP answer: Get an Airbnb with self-check in.
Non-ULTP answer: Before booking, ask hotels if they'll take a parental consent letter.
Cultural-Midnight807@reddit
Airbnb is starting to ask for an id now I don’t know if it’s an age things?
Tangboy50000@reddit
In fact many have cameras outside that they use just to verify who is coming and going. I guarantee if the parents use their ID and then the owner/property manager sees 4 young boys show up, they’ll be over there in a flash to kick them out.
DontBeASnowflayk@reddit
Not if the CC has the parent’s matching the DL…
MarshmelloBird@reddit
Parents rent airbnb under their name, and then they can go. Or have parent put the hotel room under their name and ask them if it's okay if their daughter checks into the room before they get there. I doubt they will check later to see if the parents came.
callthecopsat911@reddit
Simple, OP give his ID and a parent's ID. They're in on it anyway.
Cultural-Midnight807@reddit
True
Ok_Tap7102@reddit
That's convenient about how to get the parental consent letter, I already call ChatGPT "daddy" anyways 🥵
rgmundo524@reddit
Underneath your weird statement you make a good point. It's just a strange way to say it.
jwizzie410@reddit
Who needs chat GPT to write a note of permission? “Dear hotel, we are the parents of child name. By singing this paper, we give our child express permission to check into this hotel for the purpose of visiting anime expo with their friends. Signed, parent one parent two.”
rgmundo524@reddit
You are underestimating how dumb people are
jwizzie410@reddit
It’s an autocorrect typo you dumb fuck. You wouldn’t actually write that out. People don’t need ChatGPT to fucking comment on Reddit without making a typo you fucking dunce. Read this comment in all its glory as it was written by a human that fucking hates ChatGPT.
DarDarPotato@reddit
“By singing this paper…”
Well, you definitely didn’t use anything to check your work. Bravo
simcowking@reddit
Typos feel human.
DarDarPotato@reddit
A nervous kid walks up with his friends standing a distance that deem to be far enough away.
“Hu hu hii. I’d like to check in….”
“Sure, is a parent with you? We need someone over the age of 18 to verify the reservation.”
“U-u-uh my mom signed this note. She said it’s ok…”
Ahhh fuck it, typos happen. Let em in boys!
simcowking@reddit
I mean a few hotels do have policies for this.
They're not going to be the Hamptons or Hiltons of the world, but you can find them occasionally.
DarDarPotato@reddit
Yeah, when I was 17, it was the motels.
Shit changed so hard after Covid though.
jwizzie410@reddit

Gsgshap@reddit
I recently rented an Airbnb that had a 25+ requirement but I didn't see it in the description so I booked it. I'm under 25 but they never asked for ID and I booked it and used it without a hitch.

Gotta pay by the hour, but they would let a dog rent the room if it tried. Check out the lovely amenities like a door with bullet holes you can see through and patchy carpet where they had to change out the bloodstained section.
cheesenuggets2003@reddit
Well suggesting that minors find a disreputable hotel, particularly in L.A., is definitely ULPT.
RoninOni@reddit
I’ve rarely had to even interact with anyone for an Airbnb… it’s usually enter some code to open the lockbox with the key in it.
NorthRoseGold@reddit
Yeah but you need to use an id to even get an airbnb account AND most of them have outside cameras
Healthy_Brain5354@reddit
Did you miss the bit where their parents said it’s ok? They will just use the parents ID
Healthy_Brain5354@reddit
They’re a group of 17 year old anime nerds, they’re gonna be clocked from a mile away
disisathrowaway@reddit
I think I've only met an AirBnB host twice total in all the years I've been using it, and that was when it first started up - one of which was because I was renting a room for a night.
Otherwise if I've rented out a whole spot, they just give me the code for the door/key box and then a few texts.
fattrackstar@reddit
They are going to an anime convention. Most of the working adults going will be wearing shirts with cartoon characters or silk shirts with dragons on them. Might want to specify to dress like a working adult that's not going to an anime convention.
tostuo@reddit
Seifuku uniform with thigh highs, but wearing a business tie and a suitcase
NorthRoseGold@reddit
No. To you sign up you need to provide identification and also many individual places require age 25 to rent.
In addition, most have outside cameras to make sure you're not bringing 20 extra people inside
Healthy_Brain5354@reddit
They can use one of their parents ID, as long as the parent is young enough and they don’t look obviously different no one is going to study the camera footage and the ID that deeply
5e0295964d@reddit
Is this a country specific thing?
I had a similar worry when I was 17 and booked a hotel - they didn't ask for ID. If they'd asked, I'd have just said I didn't have it on me at the moment
I can't remember any time I've been asked for ID in any establishment except for ones that sell alcohol
mesembryanthemum@reddit
Many places in the US are 21 and up to check in; my hotel is. It's a legal liability thing.
ChicagFro@reddit
Also will require a credit card on file for incidentals.
bigdave41@reddit
I'm pretty sure Kevin McAllister got away with it, you just need to check in with your dad's credit card and then have an elaborate series of recordings ready in case they try to come spy on you while you're in the shower
coffeehousebrat@reddit
"You've been smooching with everybody! Snuffy, Al, Leo, Little Moe with the gimpy leg, Cheeks, Bony Bob, Cliff!"
i_suckatjavascript@reddit
Most credit cards don’t have raised numbers anymore so therefore you can’t use a manual credit card imprinter.
bigdave41@reddit
Kevin might still have got away with it if he had his dad's PIN - I mean it would technically be fraud even if he had permission, but then it would have been fraud using the imprinter all the same so it wouldn't have made much difference in that scenario.

No hotel Is doing a criminal background check/checking for warrants.
Big_Coyote_655@reddit
You might be surprised at how they catch people running from the feds.
myseaentsthrowaway@reddit
Just found this thread that is on point. I still don’t believe any police department is getting real time access to check in logs anywhere. In the USA.
https://www.reddit.com/r/askhotels/s/9s2qO1plrA
Big_Coyote_655@reddit
Real time would seem difficult to integrate. I'm sure records get pulled when asked with a warrant though.
myseaentsthrowaway@reddit
I’m sure police can get records with a warrant too. That’s when they’re looking for someone in particular. I don’t believe any hotel is just sending over names as they’re checking anyone in. And unlikely police are getting a warrant in the span of 4 days over a juvenile (OP said they’re all 17) unless there’s some kind of serious crime alleged. I can’t tell if you’re arguing with me or agreeing with me.
Big_Coyote_655@reddit
I'm wasting time here instead of doing other things I should be doing like grocery shopping.
myseaentsthrowaway@reddit
I got the groceries yesterday but I’m sure there’s something more productive I should be doing!
myseaentsthrowaway@reddit
Fair, I’ve never worked in the federal court system. I know that hotels aren’t doing their own criminal background checks but do you think they’re turning over their guest list to the feds in real time? Every hotel? Not saying that is impossible but I’m skeptical that anything is that well organized.
Big_Coyote_655@reddit
It would probably be an invasion of privacy and likelynot legal. It would be a lot easier to just get bank records to track their spending if they get a warrant. I used to be a night auditor at a hotel and was trained to make sure everyone was who they said they were and to keep accurate records of people coming and going.
Pro tip: always book directly with a hotel you want to stay at as 3rd party booking sites are notorious for overbooking and we always had angry people we had to turn away because of it. It was a lot more common then it should have been. Also always ask for a small discount for when you book directly as almost everyone pays a different price for their room. I think I was allowed to give 15% off for anyone that asked for a discount and we weren't at full capacity or a major event happening in the city.
myseaentsthrowaway@reddit
So when you said “you might be surprised at how they catch people running from the feds” were you saying hotels do or don’t run warrant checks at check in?
Big_Coyote_655@reddit
We had a list of wanted people in the breakroom.
myseaentsthrowaway@reddit
Makes sense. I think if this 17 year old gang going to an anime convention has a kid on America’s Most Wanted, sure, that’s a risk. But if someone has a warrant for an unpaid speeding ticket they’re probably not on most lists and they’re probably fine to check in to any hotel.
Rick-l-Sanchez@reddit
Hotels voluntarily share guest info with the police to run against a list of known warranted persons. That is how they caught Chris Chan.
MC_Cuff_Lnx@reddit
Holy fuck.
Do you know what hotel was doing this specifically?
Rick-l-Sanchez@reddit
It is literally all of them and they have been doing it for decades.
CaptainHowdey@reddit
Hey power to anyone who wanna fuck around, but I already found out. All the hotel do is check you into their system, the folk do the rest once a flagged name pings
Big_Coyote_655@reddit
I highly doubt it. There's just way too much legal liability for them to allow it. I used to work at a hotel. I'm sure there's work arounds but maybe ask the manager ahead of time of your parents can vouch for you and get them to sign a contract and have it notarized? I wouldn't suggest anything without the hotels managers pre-approval first.
suburban_ennui75@reddit

You could get a homeless person to help you check into a cheap run down motel if you offer them some cash. But regular hotels are going to expect a id and credit card with matching names.
Healthy_Brain5354@reddit
Great idea, tell a homeless adult that a group of kids with credit cards are staying there without parents

I didn't say it was the best idea, just one that might work. I'm sure i did dumber shit than that growing up.

If you know anyone else who is going to, who is above 21, maybe you could ask them to book it for you and check you in. I used to do that for my stbx’s brother and friend. In my experience, motels. Healthy_Brain5354@reddit
CPS isnt going to do anything because parents let a group of nerds who are almost 18 go to an anime convention.
RipCurl69Reddit@reddit
Having to be 21 to check into a hotel is so fucking stupid. It's only an issue in the US. We're from the UK and have travelled to the other side of Europe solo before we were 20. No issues at all.
Life experiences (yes, even going to an anime expo) shouldn't be blocked off because of some dumbshit age requirement to have accommodation.
OP just get an airbnb and be done with it
thejerseyguy@reddit
No they can't. I don't know why I'm getting down voted, it's the truth, nothing more. Trust me, they do this and they get caught it will not end well for them and especially their parents. They can't even get through TSA at the airport without a guardian, I don't know how they're going to fly.
RipCurl69Reddit@reddit
It's the truth yeah, and I'm still telling you it's incredibly stupid.
To add, airbnb is even worse. LA has a requirement to be 25 years old to book a reservation.
OP is SoL for another eight years. How sad
gordonf23@reddit
Have you seen “Home Alone 2”?

I believe you won't trash the place, I've seen what ya'll doing at cons and it is adorable.
We (as parents) made our kids Anime-Con reservations ahead of time in our name. We called the hotel and talked to a counter agent. We explained the situation and that the kids had our permission. Our kid did have to present the card with the name from the reservation, but a couple phone calls by the parents can smooth the whole thing out. Basically, we trusted our kids and put ourselves on the line for it.
BananaNo9@reddit
I guess times are a changin. We (a bunch of 17-18 year olds in 2000) booked TWO condos for our senior trip and managed to stay 6 of the 7 days before being found out and kicked out by the owners at 6am the second to last day. It only took one of our parents calling and booking it, and requesting after hours arrival where they hid the key for us.
I’d say look for independent property rentals that will allow similar situations. Message Airbnb owners requesting late arrivals.

Decent chance at least one of them will be accommodating if you sound polite

The em dashes are a give away that it was written by ChatGPT
throwaway_apologies@reddit
Haha. I’ve been bamboozled!
theirgoober@reddit
It’s not a 100% sign that it was written by AI. I’m 19 and I use EM dashes often because I’m a writer. They’re my favorite kind of punctuation for sure, and it sucks that AI has given them such a bad rep.
stegasaurusnext@reddit
Oh don't get me wrong, I agree. I do too. I'd argue though that most use an en dash when typing when they technically should be using em dash. Em dash isn't as natively easy on most keyboards as an en dash, and I'd wager that many people wouldn't even know how to create an em dash. The fact that em dashes are popping up through ChatGPT is a giveaway now. Maybe OP went to the effort of em dashes, but I do doubt it. For me it's a giveaway that it was probably AI
stegasaurusnext@reddit
Oh and for those wondering, em dash is the longer one — and is the width of an m. En dash is shorter - the width of an n. Em dashes are often used to replace commas, colons or parentheses, en dash to seperate values (like 9-10 days ago) or can be thought of as replacing the word "to" like "we walked home-work"
iPhone users can use the en dash twice without a space to create em dash on the iOS keyboard — have fun!
theirgoober@reddit
Fair, you are right about that. I typically have to copy and paste the EM dash when I want to use it.

ggcpres@reddit
Your best bet is to get someone 18+to come with.
Hotels are really aggressive about trespassing people, and you could end up banned from the entire chain, not just that location.
So you need someone who has a payment card that matches their 18+ ID to come with. On the upside, that's one more person to cut the costs with.
So I'm sorry, but in good conscience I have to recommend that at least one member of your party have an 18+ ID that matches their payment card.
OverallManagement824@reddit
Just go to the creepiest part of town and look for creepy old guys cruising around. Ask them to get a hotel for you. Should be easy. /s
foolforfucks@reddit
Are your parents able to come with you to check you in? That's the main thing you need them for.
Sum-Duud@reddit
Have your parents reserve the hotel and associate their rewards app to the reservation. Check in through the app. I have check in at the front desk of maybe 1 hotel of 10-15 that I’ve stayed at over the last 2-3 years. Automated check in and check out makes things so easy.
I typically stay at hotels in the Hilton or Marriott chains and they usually have digitals keys through the app on my phone.

I have never had an issue with my parents booking the room in their name, then I show up and present my ID and inform them I am their child. As long as the last names are the same it works most of the time. The worst ive had happen is I had to call my parent and have them confirm over the phone that they were real and I did in fact have permission. You might want to only have one of you go to check in, then have the others walk to ur room after a delay and you let them in. I'm sure a clerk would rather make an exception for a single child, then a group of teenagers.
Adventurous_Bonus917@reddit

Look through the comments in the Hilton or Marriot subreddits for the locations in/around LA that will let you mobile check in and use your phone as a key, without stopping by the front desk. Most Hiltons will also let you pick your own room. Pick a room as far away from the elevator/close to the stairs as possible, so you’re not being seen often. Put the do not disturb sign on the front of the room when you arrive.
Ideally when you arrive, take a side entrance and take the stairs to your room. If a group of high schoolers arrives with no parent on sight, you might not make it past the lobby. If you checked in and got your mobile key, you can open the side entrances and then just walk up the stairs to your room. Or walk down the hallway to your elevator, most elevators aren’t within direct sight of the front desk staff.
Good luck!

Year ago I worked in a hotel in NYC and a 17 year old Kaia Gerber tried to check in with a friend. When I told them they were too young to check in and explained why, she fully crashed out, asked me if I knew who her mother was. And told me that her father was going to ensure I lost my job because he was a VIP at that particular hotel. When I calmly informed her that non of that mattered were obligated because this luxury hotel does not have locked minibars in rooms etc so checking her in made alcohol readily available to her, she crashed out further, started crying and screaming and making a scene. Eventually a manager came out and let her check in after he spoke to one of her parents on the phone. So you could always do that.../s
pastaeater2000@reddit
Hilton or Marriott do mobile key. Have your parents make a reservation in their name, add you to the room, then check in online. You head to the desk get physical keys and be on your way. Note: this doesn't always work as new members, special rates, and certain payment methods require presenting an ID at the desk to check in.

I did this 😂 but in my case it was actually to check out a University I wanted to go to. Told my mom I was spending the weekend at a friend's house, and went out of state with another friend. I lucked out in that I had a student credit card already. My friend passed for over 21, I looked like a child. He tried first and they asked for ID. Came back real anxious. I changed clothes into a turtleneck sweater and slacks, and went in. I reserved the room under my name, and I just presented my credit card and they probably assumed that was good enough. But this was 20 years ago so way easier!
