Clothes shopping as a Gen X Ladyperson
Posted by aduirne@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 395 comments
I ducked into the mall during a storm today and decided to check out the women's clothing. I was looking for something to wear on a beach trip. The amount of puffy eyelet sleeves, ruffles, and poufy bits in odd places was annoying. I am an overweight middle aged woman and there is no way Carmen Miranda type clothing is going to work for me. I have seen some slightly younger and much thinner coworkers look cute in this stuff, but honestly most people look horrible in it. Maybe I can wear my Smiths t shirt to the beach. This wasn't some trendy mall shop either. This was Macy's.
Alone-Climate6557@reddit
Try J. Crew/J. Crew Outlet. They have some good basics that are flattering and wash well.
Comfortable-Pea-1312@reddit
In just a few years, I am going full Mrs. Roper. Caftans and chunky jewelry. Can't wait!
iammrsclean@reddit
I’m already in my Mrs. Roper era. I have all sorts of caftans. Two for wearing outside the house (one is from the brand Mirth—their stuff is seriously good) and three for wearing around the house. My favorite around the house caftan comes from Barefoot Dreams, it’s SO soft and looks pretty cute too. But I also have a vintage Oscar de la Renta which is silky and fabulous! I do wear it when people come over to my house.
I think I’m headed into my turban era. I’m 54 and sick of doing my hair.
elphaba00@reddit
There was a documentary I was watching a couple days ago - and I can't remember which one because my mind has gone to shit - and a younger woman was wearing a turban. And I told my husband, "I think I'm going to start wearing turbans." I think he thought I lost my mind.
iammrsclean@reddit
Well, I love that!!
Dede0821@reddit
I’m sick of doing my hair
I just got a pixie cut yesterday for the same exact reason, lol. Woke up this morning, ruffled my hair into place, and out I went. Fabulous! I’ll be 54 in a few short weeks.
Zestyclose_Maybe_953@reddit
Me too, happy early bday!
Dede0821@reddit
Same to you, happy early B-day! 😊
Jules-Bee43@reddit
I grew my hair out, specifically so I could put in in a bun or ponytail and call it a day. I rarely even blow it dry anymore. Wash. Ain’t frizz serum. Air dry. It actually looks better than ever.
iammrsclean@reddit
What anti-frizz serum do you use?
Jules-Bee43@reddit
Eleven Australia Anti Frizz. The best thing about these products is they smell amazing. Each line has a specific scent. The anti frizz smells like watermelons.

You should check out the International Order of Mrs. Roper. It’s a thing!
iammrsclean@reddit
OMG!! Thank you!
Appropriate-Luck1181@reddit
Thank you for posting the brand! I’ve been looking for some caftans.
Cleopatrashouseboy@reddit
Dude, if I started to wear caftans, I’d balloon up to 200 lbs, lol.
IamGypsyStarr@reddit
Was my reason FOR the caftans, lol.
bearwacket@reddit
Thanks for the Mirth recommendation - those are beautiful! On my wish list!
I looked up Barefoot Dreams and they look comfy but it's weird, I can't find the fabric composition anywhere on their site. They mention their "unique fabrication" - if it's not too much trouble, would you share what it says on a tag??
trullaDE@reddit
That's why I have pretty much a buzz cut (three quarters of an inch at the top, fading to about a quarter inch at the back and sides). It's also great because you can bleach that length to death without longtime damage, and dye it every color of the rainbow.

mrspalmieri@reddit
Last year I bought myself a vintage 1970's summer weight housecoat
Confident-Silver-271@reddit
My babci wore those! She has been my inspiration! 😀
Comfortable-Pea-1312@reddit
With pockets?
mrspalmieri@reddit
Yes! With deep pockets. It's especially great when I'm hanging clothes out on the line, those pockets hold a ton of clothespins
Relative_Ad9477@reddit
I made my own caftan out of lightweight linen fabric for summertime. It's AMAZING!!!
Dr_Overundereducated@reddit
I will defend my kaftan to the death!
Strangewhine88@reddit
I’ve transitioned to the loose airy cap-sleeved button placket cotton gauze dress or the perennial staple cotton t dress that’s never been out of my wardrobe since the 80’s. Haven’t gotten to caftans yet but am conditioning myself to the possibilities. Even my tall skinny friends are coming along for the change. If I have to go structureless, I’m going all the way. Probably doing matching turbans for my thinning hair, except in mid-summer heatwaves. Looking for a vintage long cigarette holder to accessorize. I guess a vape pen could adorn it should I need to pick up everyone’s favorite gateway drug again for creaky joint pains.
gatorgopher@reddit
Ha! I just bought my first kaftan for a 4th of July pool party! I can guarantee I'll wear it other times. I also have another favorite jersey palazzo pant with flowy shirt that I call my Maude outfit.
robot_pirate@reddit

Comfortable-Pea-1312@reddit
Apparently Mrs Roper was 46. 46??!!!!
whostheblondestrangr@reddit
Wait, they had a 59 yr old actress (when the show started) play a 46 yr old? [Three’s Co started in 1977 & Audra Lindley was born in 1918]
MasterOfKittens3K@reddit
The actress was pretty hot, too. The makeup and costume departments did some really impressive work.
AlwaysatTechDee@reddit
I’m not waiting a few years, this is happening this July 4th 😂
CrabbyCatLady41@reddit
What are you waiting for? I got a caftan last year at a thrift store and it rules. Bra off, caftan on, letting everything breathe. All while sashaying around feeling fancy and sassy as fuck. I even crocheted myself a a shorter caftan swimsuit coverup so I can be Mrs. Roper at the beach.
lovemydogs1969@reddit
Parker Posey bringing caftans back on White Lotus season 3, shero that she is.
heldaway@reddit
Oh this is my next phase for sure!

Unique_Football_8839@reddit
While the ones I wear aren't quite up to Mrs. Roper's standard, I've been wearing them for years. Roomy, comfortable, and if you pick the right fabric, incredibly light & hot weather friendly. They're perfect clothes for when you're at home & don't want to wear clothes, but for some reason you have to.
I've had a plan in mind for a while now to try buying a silk sari of eBay & turn it into a caftan. ( Yes, the saris can be problematic.)
stefanica@reddit
I'm about ready for it now. Swedish and Polish clothing stores know what's up.

Electronic_Wait_7500@reddit
52 F size 16 and shrinking (thank you zepbound!). I have discovered the sundress with some slip shorts and ain't going back. I love Old Navy, as well as Bass Pro Shop. BP has really nice clothing for women.
aduirne@reddit (OP)
I wish I could take something like that but I am crazy sensitive to new meds and my insurance doesn't cover it.
Electronic_Wait_7500@reddit
Mine doesn't either, but I'm saving at least half the cost in food. It's wild to have my body work like it's supposed to. So far I have very few side effects. Heart disease runs in my family, and I knew I had to get the weight off. I also have Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism, so without the meds it's almost impossible.
aduirne@reddit (OP)
I have tinnitus and there is a good chance glp could make it worse.
Electronic_Wait_7500@reddit
That must be awful! I'm sorry you're dealing with that.
Unique_Football_8839@reddit
This is why, 40 years after my Mom desperately tried to teach me, I've taken up sewing. Nothing fancy, but basic stuff is pretty easy if you don't mind loose fitting things.
There's also the benefit of being able to choose the fabric. It seems like almost everything reasonably priced is made out of the shittiest synthetic stuff possible. I mean, I'm old enough to remember nice, good quality polyester blouses, but the stuff they're using now doesn't even make good cleaning rags.
I hate hot weather, so my current agenda is to make as much stuff out of cotton gauze & silk as I can afford.
RoguePlanet2@reddit
Would consider learning to sew to take in some large hoodies inherited from my mother.
Loisgrand6@reddit
Where are you buying material from? The two fabric stores in my area are closed
DirtyBird23220@reddit
This!! This whole thread is exactly why I make most of my clothes. They fit ME, not some idealized body (I’m 5’2”, menopausal and busty). I can pick the pattern, the fabric, the color.
BTW, silk is insulating and a good choice for winter. In the summer, linen is where it’s at!
MrsTurtlebones@reddit
Almost every Gen X woman i know does NOT want cap sleeves or short sleeves. I wish more elbow length sleeves were standard.
_left_of_center@reddit
I’m struggling to find an entire shirt at all. It’s either a crew neck tee or nothing. Anything else has weird cutouts or tiny straps or is impossibly short or sheer. I hate everything.
RoguePlanet2@reddit
Spent all day Juneteenth at the mall, looking for shorts. That's it, just shorts. Even checked out the men's section, nothing. Just want shorts down to my knees. Not culottes but I'll take 'em if there's nothing else.
Today I'll check out REI because I like practical hiking shorts. Just want to survive the heat wave and probable nuclear blasts (meh, probably not worth it.)
unolemon@reddit
And wtf is with every top being cropped? I don’t do cropped. I wear a size medium, but with my body proportions and my belly, it’s not happening. Just give me a shirt that’s a reasonable length, please!
Plantyplantandpups@reddit
Im only 5'2", and when I order from Old Navy, I have to order talls so that shirts fit long enough. I had how short tops are now.
tikiwanderlust@reddit
I’m 5’2” and wear a medium in some and large in others. The large always fits like a dress and the mediums are usually a little long on me. I have a few bottoms that require a top that stops just below my belt line, but those shirts are few and far between for me. (I’m taking T-shirts, not blouses)
Odd-Adhesiveness-656@reddit
I cheat and order the tshirt mini dresses that I wear with cropped leggings! Also put "tunic" into the search bar...weeds out a lot of crap
Mycatreallyhatesyou@reddit
Even sweatshirts and sweaters. Who wants their midriff flapping in the breeze on a cold day?
Odd-Adhesiveness-656@reddit
I prefer ABC shirts...Adequate Butt Coverage! Not tunic length, not wearing it
stefanica@reddit
Oh, I know! I'm pleasantly plump these days, and almost everything just barely hits my navel. WTAF
purplishfluffyclouds@reddit
What? I prefer sleeveless.
fertilemyrtleturtle@reddit
Yes. Too many hot flashes, too much fabric touching anything, and I'm a cuckoo crazy pants.
middlingachiever@reddit
I can’t do elbow length or 3 quarter length. Sensory thing.
I love overly long sleeves that I can wrap over my fingers, or short/sleeveless. I can’t see that changing in my lifetime, regardless of how my arms look.
Tasty_Marsupial8057@reddit
That’s funny, I’m sensory too and I love me a 3/4 sleeve. The kind that go over your hand or with the dreaded thumb hole make feel frantic and jumpy. We’re opposites!
middlingachiever@reddit
Those thumb holes make me feel loved 🥰😆
flea1400@reddit
I’ll do short sleeves, where they come down to mid-bicep, but cap sleeves are annoying. And I hate “bracelet length” because it just looks like my clothes shrank.
Tortured_Orchard@reddit
Kohls is the only place I’ve found that offers ‘elbow length tees’, not just the standard stupid nearly-cap sleeve.
FrancinetheP@reddit
J Jill and LL bean have elbow length and 3/4 sleeve tees.
SnooPeanuts4336@reddit
3/4 baseball style band tees for the win!!
jillsvag@reddit

hazeldazeI@reddit

RandallinaO@reddit
I wear a lot of Gap. Not exciting but classic while somewhat on trend? I really like their modern tees; not too loose, not too tight and mid length sleeves. Pretty good quality.
Working_Park4342@reddit
I wear very lightweight sweaters if I'm leaving the house. I gave up bras years ago. The sweater makes me feel more comfortable. No upper arms or nips showing.
wisemonkey101@reddit
Sing it sister! I honestly don’t know how to dress myself now. I gained weight. Worked from home for a few years. Before that wore scrubs. I hate the slimy knits that are everywhere. I want clothes that are practical, comfortable and washable. No clown sleeves! All the online options are gross fabrics.
KitchenWitch021@reddit
Why can’t we find 100% cotton clothing anymore? Even jeans are a mixture of various fabrics. I foolishly bought a top from Amazon, this shirt felt like rubber. It was an ombré color and kind of shiny. Awful, sent that back and lesson learned.
Zestyclose_Maybe_953@reddit
I just bought some flowy cotton pants from z supply. They would look great with a thrifted baggy Smiths t shirt , although given what an ass Morrissey turned out to be I may look for throwing muses or bjork instead
wolpertingersunite@reddit
Believe it or not JCPenney is great for this. Their St John’s Bay tshirts are great, with every variation of sleeve, neck and color, in cotton. They also have decent chino pants. Find a combo that works and you can buy diff colors and basically have a reliable, cheap uniform.
padall@reddit
Hmmm, I haven't been to Penny's in a while. I should check them out again. Problem is I hate going to the mall (especially that particular mall), so I'd have to make an effort. Lol
wolpertingersunite@reddit
Oh god no. Order online. Wait for a sale -- they have them every five minutes it seems.
aduirne@reddit (OP)
Yes! And they have tall sizes.
KitchenWitch021@reddit
Thank you , good to know! I would be happy with a bunch of plain V neck short sleeved shirts. I hate those polyester shiny shirts that make you sweaty and sticky. It’s supposed to be 90+ degrees next week for days, I just want some nice cotton clothing to get through it!
NoNameChihuahua@reddit
Pact has some comfy cotton clothes
wisemonkey101@reddit
They do have an option for return that says fabric is icky. I don’t trust clothes through Amazon anymore.
iammrsclean@reddit
Thank you!
neurospicygogo70@reddit
Im at a loss as to why women cant think/see for themselves that NO ONE looks good in those things. Clothing stores tell them its fashion and they buy and wear it even thought it looks ridiculous.
begayallday@reddit
I started wearing men’s clothes almost exclusively a few years ago and I am never going back. Being able to fit a 20 oz soda in my pocket gives me life.
tikiwanderlust@reddit
I haven’t tried men’s pants but most of the T-shirts these days are “unisex” and they always fit me like a dress (in length) and they choke me out around the neck. I love the scoop neck or V-neck of a ladies style shirt, and also the way it slims through the middle. Men’s shirts are too boxy for me.

Please can we have more shirts with collars?! 👚 I don’t care if they’re preppy collars or turtlenecks (not at the 🏝️) or mock necks or Mandarin style. I wear scrubs for my job and I even want more scrub tops with some kind of collar. If I wear the normal V-neck scrubs, she. I have yet to find anything that makes me look like a decently put together woman. I have extremely high comfort standards though, so that rules out a lot of socially acceptable clothing choices.
EatMorePieDrinkMore@reddit
I have been buying clothes from universal standard recently. I may be addicted. They are not cheap but well made, stylish but not trendy, and they fit well.
Mypizzasareinmotion@reddit
I’ll check it out- I don’t mind paying a bit more for quality. I don’t need anything trendy, and as I age I realize that fit and cut does every body waaaaay more favors than any particular style or look.
goingloopy@reddit
25-35% off site wide at Universal Standard this weekend. This shirt shirt is my new favorite thing. I have 2 in my regular size and one a size smaller. It’s very roomy. The Tee Rex and Vee Rex are incredibly soft and hold up well.
I hate their jeans and most of their pants because they’re a weird length. I do like the Stephanie pants, but they need pockets. I also hate most of their skirts because my waist is not 2” under my bust and they end up a really unflattering length.
The tees and foundation turtlenecks are wardrobe staples. The dresses are hit and miss. I do like the Sunset Linen Flounce Dress.
PenguinSpectre@reddit
If you get their knit dress pants, be prepared to replace buttons. Also, fold them and put them on a shelf instead of hanging them on a hanger. I bought a number of them a couple of years ago when I had to work a project where I couldn’t wear jeans with my button downs. They fit great — but then the buttons started coming off, and then the fabric began stretching out and pulling where it came in contact with hangers.
aduirne@reddit (OP)
I tried their jeans and for the price I was not impressed. I returned them.
EatMorePieDrinkMore@reddit
I HATE their jeans. I like the ones from Ann Taylor Loft and the Gap.
SciFi_Wasabi999@reddit
Same! I refuse to wear polyester, I despise restrictive denim. Everything has cut outs in places nobody wants to see on a 50 year old. But that doesn't mean I want to walk around in capris and a tshirt with an applique teddy bear. I want to look like a brilliant scientist who also owns an art gallery, lol.
FrancinetheP@reddit
100% on this. Cannot wait for this moment in fashion to pass.
Front-Dot5420@reddit
Agree, I feel seen.
Aware_Focus9148@reddit
Have you seen the bubble skirts? Sorry, but if I wore it to homecoming freshman year it will never be in my closet again.
pickleball_bender@reddit
I'm 53(f), size 14-16 depending, and I find it virtually impossible to shop anywhere. The younger sections are too young and the "women's" department is too old. I currently hate all of my clothes and find absolutely nothing I want to spend money on. Also why is everything SO FREAKING expensive???
General_Row_8038@reddit
Find a Goodwill — clothes from every era, every label. I like Loft jeans and light cardigans and can usually find a few every time I shop. Not as cheap as they used to be, but 10.99 for a barely-worn dress with my preferred style elements is pretty good. You have to be able to eyeball your size accurately, though, as they no longer have dressing rooms (in my area anyway)
pickleball_bender@reddit
I've scored my local Goodwill stores for years and see nothing but crap. Worn, often dirty, stained, damaged "goods". T-shirts, tops from Target and Walmart priced for almost full price. Pants are a joke. I quit going because I don't have the time to look at every. single. item. to determine if it's even worth picking up the hanger. I live in Southern California, and have no idea where everyone online lives where they're always seemingly scoring the cutest clothes! 😭😂
General_Row_8038@reddit
Oh that sucks. I’m in MSP, and I go to some beautifully clean stores in Wayzata and Eagan (suburbs), but you have to go regularly and have a method of flipping through hangers quickly. It takes commitment. My son has had similar experiences to yours though— dirty, stained, misshapen low quality items.
Snuffleupagus27@reddit
I was a similar size until recently and I really like DKNY, Halogen (Nordstrom brand), and Calvin Klein for good not-too-boring basics. Donna Karan is the best if you have a larger chest.
SpokeAndMinnows@reddit
Men’s shorts and a wifebeater. I’m wearing it now, on my couch. Get the Hanes multi pack and dye them different colors.
wombatIsAngry@reddit
I don't know if we're allowed to recommend brands, but I buy all my swim stuff from calypsa online. They have a wide size selection, and you can get more modest swim shorts and stuff.
No-Clue4432@reddit
I went to Macy's yesterday and found one shirt that wasn't awful. This is my third shopping trip in 2 weeks. I have 3 shirts total. And 2 need to be altered abit.
AZWildcatMom@reddit
Any ideas for affordable caftans? No way I can spend $300 on one outfit.
wiyanna@reddit
I’m wearing whatever I like and feel good in. I’m even buying moomoos and sundresses to garden in - wore one to the salon yesterday. Bike shorts underneath and that’s that. I’m too old to try to stay “in style”.
chickenofeathers@reddit
Go to Costco or BJ’s.
AgileMastodon0909@reddit
I can’t believe I’m putting this out in public but I found some cute things at Talbots.
Plantyplantandpups@reddit
I like Talbots. Ann Taylor and Loft outlets, too.
padall@reddit
Loft has nice stuff, but it's a little expensive.
I also personally have a hard time finding a lot of stuff to fit me, especially for pants because I'm usually a 16. Which, that's a me issue, mostly, but I can find clothes that size in other "regular-sized" clothing stores.
aduirne@reddit (OP)
We have a Talbot's outlet near me and I have found a few things. I looknfor Soft Surroundings and Coldwater creek on ebay and there are loadsnof things at a fifth of the price.
forever_29_ish@reddit
I read in a comment section somewhere on the innerwebz that "Soft Surroundings is like Free People for GenX women" and I turned, looked at my closet full of Soft Surroundings and Sundance, nodded, and raised a glass to that commenter.
My favorite thrift trips are when I find both SS and Sundance. I have a great cashmere sweater I found on dollar day - from Sundance, AND it still had the tags on it. Sometimes I just stare at it and hope it gets chilly enough to wear it. In June.
AgileMastodon0909@reddit
Check Nordstrom Rack, too. They have some good deals and a better selection than Macy’s.
Heathster249@reddit
Let’s not mention the high rise ankle length pants….. on a short woman with a short waist….. I shop online now.
Plantyplantandpups@reddit
As a fellow short-waisted shorty, I'm begging for low rise to come back because they actually hit at my waist. Even mid rise just folds over and looks horrible. High rise is going right up to my boobs and that's the majority of what's for sale. I don't understand why we can't have low, mid, and high rises always available so everyone is happy.
doodlep@reddit
Boyfriend cuts were always the best for me at 5’2” - just at the waist, slightly baggy, straighter leg. These god awful high waisted mom jeans are back now so the boyfriends are due in about 3-5 years, then I’ll stock up! Because after that, 10 years from now in 2035, we’ll be back to the 2005 low-rise buttcrack Britney Spears things.
Plantyplantandpups@reddit
I'll stock up when the butt crack ones come back because that's the only time I'll have any that sit at my waist. Lol.
jillsvag@reddit
👋hi! Another short waisted short gal here. High rise are horribly painful for me! I tried once and thought I would die. The material jams into my gut when sitting. As a girl with hips, i would love to find low rise pants.
Plantyplantandpups@reddit
I found low rise jeans at American Eagle this year, but I haven't seen any pants at all. I have had some luck filtering pants by low rise on ThredUp, but they are hit or miss on the quality actually being what they say unless it is new with tags.
_left_of_center@reddit
Thank you! I have the opposite problem as a super tall lady. Low rise often borders on obscene. Why can’t we have all types available for all sizes??
fumbs@reddit
I am a tall woman with a long torso and large chest. I also have issues with length but won't buy online because they lie about dimensions.
I actually do all my shopping at Macy's and feel like I'm a million years old.
Vioralarama@reddit
Someone already mentioned Universal Standard so you might want to look into them. Wait! Before you start shopping they have a promo where you can get a free piece but only for first timers. They also had another first timer deal that I took advantage of which was two pieces at a reduced price or something. It's how I learned that US is not for me. But it might be for you: I got jeans and they are long; I could cut like 6 inches off and they'd still be too long, I think. And the shirt is clingy in all the wrong places on me. But I'm short and hourglass, but overweight. It was almost tunic length though.
It may not be the same deal but I'm sure they're running some promo like that. Definitely easier to try them out that way. I just have in my brain that US is for tall people, lol.
Teutofone@reddit
Universal Standard is great, but as a tall, long-torso person, I find you have to watch the lengths of their tops and jackets very carefully. I also cannot wear their regular inseam trousers or jeans unless I want a cropped look. Their long inseam is the minimum if I want a full length look.
Vioralarama@reddit
Wow. I wonder why the jeans I got were so long. i probably ordered tall by mistake or something.
Significant_Ruin4870@reddit
I'd shop online if it weren't such a colossal hassle. Nothing I've ordered on line has ever fit. And then it has to be shipped back. I once ordered a size medium 100% cotton dress. They shipped a size 0 polyester dress. Told me I had to ship it to China for a partial refund.
AnUnexpectedUnicorn@reddit
Dispute the charge with your credit card company. I've had 2 orders that said they were cotton, made in America, etc, what i got was flimsy acrylic definitely not made in USA. I got the same offer - partial refund or ship it to Dubai at my expense. I contacted my credit card company (Citibank), explained the situation, and I got my money back, both times.
padall@reddit
I know I'm (we're all?) biased, but I really feel like clothes nowadays are terrible. They don't even look good on 20 year olds.
I used to LOVE shopping in the nineties and even early aughts. There were so many cute clothes that were actually flattering. Even up until about 5-10 years ago, I was pretty satisfied with what was out there. But now, I just don't know where to shop. I have plenty of clothes, but I wear way more super casual clothes (sweats, leggings, basic t shirts) than I used to . Luckily, I WFH 50% of the time, but if I needed more work clothes, I know I'd be frustrated.
I have had luck with Eddie Bauer, which someone mentioned above.
No_thanks_sam@reddit
I use stitchfix and let someone else pick out clothes for me. They’re usually pretty spot on, especially for work clothes.
kazoogrrl@reddit
I'm an aging goth but on the low key side of things. For summer it's currently tanks, tshirts, linen or denim shorts, an occasional caftan, high rise pleated linen pants, wide leg cotton gauze pants, oversized light cotton button downs, oversized loose cotton overalls. Adidas sneakers, though I'm pondering a pair of chunky oxfords. Kind of crunchy goth hobbit, as I'm short and thick, though I've been hitting the gym so I'm cool with showing my arms.
I love to look at street style IG accounts from Asia, especially Japan. There is a certain aesthetic I like, simple, natural fabrics, interesting drape, good accent pieces, sometimes kind of artsy. I have no idea how to dress like this myself, or where to get the clothes, but I can dream.
igfootba@reddit
Where do you find your linen pants? I can't seem to find any that don't drag the floor or look like Hammer pants on my short/thick self.
I live in the desert, and it's hard to dress myself for the heat. I'm mainly doing tshirts and long skirts. I did find a great pair of wide legged linen goth-ish pants from Disturbia, though. Very comfortable and highly recommended. A lot of their dresses are also good quality, not frumpy, and don't make me feel like I'm a middle aged lady wearing teenager's clothing.
kazoogrrl@reddit
I have a couple of pairs from Old Navy, they are high waisted and pleated and I just don't care if they make me look even shorter. I do have to belt them or the linen stretches and they'll creep down and drag. I wore them a few weeks ago with a fitted cropped T-shirt. If I find anything I really like that's too long I'll get them tailored, it's not too expensive.
areyouthrough@reddit
I’m gonna need some names for those ig accounts, if you’d care to share a couple.
kazoogrrl@reddit
The only ones I can dig out of my IG are one that does Harajuku street shots (totally wild , not what I'd wear at all) and this one that's actually Korean, I love the pictures of older folks. If I remember the names of any of the others I'll add them.

thatpunkyrat@reddit
I'm a Gen Z woman, but Old Navy has such cute clothes and really good sales! My mom and I love shopping there.
Spank_Cakes@reddit
I still get my jeans from ON since they have a decent variety of styles. But the barrel jeans?! WTF. I stick with straight leg or boot cut.
melatonia@reddit
Unfortunately Old Navy clothes are so disposable they're practically flushable.
aduirne@reddit (OP)
The quality has gone down significantly since the late 90s early 2000s. I still get things from them now and then but not like I once did.
JessaRose720@reddit
I have big boobs and will only wear linen, cotton, and select man made fabrics as long as they breathe and float. I mostly wear dresses from Universal Standard, jcrew, Lintico, Gap, and the occasional Old Navy.
justjessb1975@reddit
I shop with Shein. Bigger here, too. They actually have cute and black! stuff for plus sized women that don't have gaudy floral prints.

Stay out of the mall and go thrifting instead? I've had a lot of luck in consignment/2nd-hand stores.

ToneSenior7156@reddit
The big bib collars, puffy sleeves crack me up. I call that look “sexy pilgrim” - I love cottage core but not that much.

My job attire is very informal (teacher) so I rarely dress shop. I went to Marshall’s to find a new dress for a graduation and it was all that Little House on the Prairie crap. Soooo much fabric!

polyester_bride@reddit
To me, everything in stores looks so juvenile and too bright. I like a nice pink, but I don't need a magenta shirt, shorts, pants, skirt, etc. I've found I pretty much wear a 'uniform' of dark jeans or black pants - cropped in the summer - and a solid color shirt. A band tee on the weekend. If it's a beach thing, I'm usually under an umbrella. :)
Dr_Overundereducated@reddit
I can’t handle what’s going on with women’s fashion at the moment. I’ve given in to the high rise jeans as they actually flatter my what-the-hell-happened bod, but why is everything crop top? I don’t dig it.
efreeme@reddit
Just wear your stirrup pants, Reeboks, and a Motley Crue t shirt with a knot tied in it.. add a full can of aquanet and your all set..
Mental-Artist-6157@reddit
I am bringing back the knotteded tee, I pair it with flared yoga pants and fancy sneakers. I'm short waisted as hell but the crop tops are trash on me too. Bonus points when the shirt has a "I exist purely out of spite" logo.

I hear you. I am overweight and sensitive to fabrics that are not cotton/linen. Not sure what your style is, but Pact (online) has cute, simple clothes that feel awesome in summer and fit nicely in larger sizes. Lots of linen pants, tops and dresses that are cute and super comfy -- and no poufy bits.

No shit! I'm 5'2" on a warm day and from waist to floor is 3 feet. High waisted pants look ridiculous on me unless I wear them with a tunic top to hide the fact that they are high-rise.
Not to mention I don't they look great on anyone with a mom pooch unless they're designed to flatten and even then - ugh.

I’ve moved over to my comfy, cool-girl era and started dressing for me. I maybe own 3 pairs of jeans and the rest of my pants are all softer, looser and more comfy. Stovepipe cords, overalls, coveralls, khaki, 100% cotton wide leg pants… hoodies, oversized graphic/band tees and loose cardigans. I love colorful sneakers and I wear my hair natural. I buy what I love whether in style or not and usually pre-owned or vintage. I can’t do the cropped tops and high waisted pants look absurd on me. I’ll incorporate a trendy piece here and there but I don’t generally shop off the rack much.
I’ve always been into fashion though and I’m getting a major kick out of seeing everything I used to wear come back into style. And trying out styles I was too afraid to try when younger and more worried about what everyone thought of me.

I go to One Stop Plus and order online. The local stores don’t have much for me. If I go to Torrid, half of it is clearly meant for younger women. Lane Bryant is the only place locally where I can really find stuff.
Sure, Kohls will have a few basics like socks and underwear, maybe a T-shirt if you’re looking for that. Depends on sizing though, and mine must be the most popular because it’s usually sold out.

I recently went shopping for a dress to wear to my daughter's graduation. It was slim pickins. I went to the mall too. I went to JCPenney and Macy's. The dresses mostly had hideous patterns. And if they didn't, then they had plunging necklines, or they were too short, or the hemline wasn't straight across. It would dip in a weird way. Plus they were expensive. Who wants to spend so much money on ugly dresses. I went to Ross and finally found a dress that looked o.k.

I’m still wearing the same basic things I’ve worn since I graduated from college (in some cases literally.) When you find a look that works for you, I say stick with it.
Particular-Safe-5557@reddit
I love Pact, and Toad and Co dresses.
clemdane@reddit
I almost never shop in person. I like to buy online. Some of my favorite beachwear is made by Coolibar where the fabric has UPF 50 protection.
Vast_Cantaloupe1030@reddit
I hate the ruffles!!!!
Reasonable-Mirror-15@reddit
I'm a chunky lady myself. I don't shop in stores anymore. I shop online at Bloomchic and Cider. Bloomchic is my go to for classic and work pieces. Cider mostly has younger looking stuff but I've found really cute, quirky tees and sweaters on there. You have to know your measurements to shop online successfully.
I occasionally do a Stitch fix box. My main problem with them is I get sent a lot of black and navy choices. I'm a color fanatic and want bright, vibrant colors because they make me happy.
biffieteria@reddit
Plus size color fanatic here too! I love being able to find neon pieces over the past few years 💕 Will check out Bloomchic and Cider.

I just ordered a Cure Tshirt for summer. Perimenopause weight gain has made my boobs huge (along with the rest of me) and I don’t need puffy sleeves or anything else that adds bulk, as pretty as those dresses and tops are. You have to be fairly tall and slender for those styles to look nice, and unfortunately I’m neither.
I just want to be comfortable and not overly exposed or overly sweaty.
I’ve been wearing a lot of North Face Aphrodite capris in summer, because they’re fairly stretchy and breathable.
Considering the tackiest caftan I can find, to add some spice to my wardrobe.
bethanyjane77@reddit
1930-40's style beach pajama's look so glam! Otherwise Smiths T-shirt all the way. You'll feel like you, that's the most important thing.
designsbyintegra@reddit
I’m so thankful that I can sew my clothes. The styles today are just not something I could ever pull off, or want to. My chunky ass does not need any extra puffy anything. Plus I’m really short and high waisted.
My style is best described as a hybrid of goth, grunge and hippie. Definitely not finding that off the rack in a plus size.
Also if pants have a real waistband and not a stretchy waistband I’m all set.
Sweaty-Bed6653@reddit
I like LOFT and Old Navy (I’ve gotten some cute maxi shirts there this summer). But I can’t find shorts or jeans for the life of me bc everything is high waist. No thanks. I like Kut from the Kloth for jeans, and I just got a really cute pair of pants from a Short Style box. The brand is Tribal. I love Title 9 but don’t want to deal with refunds and exchanges there.
Plantyplantandpups@reddit
Most of my clothes are from Loft, but I can't wear their jeans either. I finally found some lower waist jeans at American Eagle that I love!
Traditional_Fan_2655@reddit
Fashion designers have long ago decided anyone over size 4 should wear ugly floral curtain looking patterns or something makes them look a good 10x larger than they are.
RedditSkippy@reddit
I get most of my clothing at either Lands’ End or JJill.
aduirne@reddit (OP)
I used to thrift shop but it has gotten high. My swimsuit is Lands End and so are many of my summer dresses. I have gotten some good stuff on ebay too.
Plantyplantandpups@reddit
I used to get a lot from Thredup, but their prices have gone up so much for the good stuff that it's usually cheaper to buy new when brands are having a sale.
Responsible-Fox1146@reddit
JJill fan here too. Check out Quince. Their return policy is phenomenal and easy to deal with if you need it while figuring out your sizing. Everything I’ve tried (cashmere and leather primarily) has been great.
WitchyWoo7@reddit
JJill fan as well. Their Wearever line has been great for work and travel.
RedditSkippy@reddit
I’ve seen their advertising. I will—thanks!
diente_de_leon@reddit
I got so many things from ThredUP. You have to read carefully and look closely at the photos but I have scored lots of comfortable, nice looking clothes from them. Set your sizes in the search feature and you have a better chance of getting things in your correct size. It still shows me things that are too small, but for the most part I come up with a pretty good selection and I've gotten things like a Ralph Lauren linen shirt for way underneath retail.
OmChi123456@reddit
Girl, I've been wearing wearing clothes like I've been on a trek for longer than I can remember.
KittoosFurrEver@reddit
You kind of have to rock the Smiths t-shirt now. Come on, represent!
Rainbow_alchemy@reddit
I discovered this summer that apparently I love T-shirt dresses. The fabric is comfy, and I don’t have to wear pants! I also wear the me undies bras that are basically useless for flattery but are so comfy I forget I’m wearing them.
Loud-Mans-Lover@reddit
I just bought five really big, bright neon t-shirts
I'm ready for summer
No_Owl_7380@reddit
Lands End has great basics every season and their swimwear is the best, J. Jill always has nice summer and resort wear, Talbots generally has some good dresses and more tailored separates. All three are size inclusive. J. Jill has everything classified as regular size but this includes 1x-4x.
Least-Bet8439@reddit
just had this conversation with my sisters we feel there are only two options - both expensive and a commitment - but both can really solve this problem.
travel to Vietnam - i like to head to Hoi An, and spend a week getting a custom wardrobe made. a google search will lead you to the right tailors, but it is so worth it. bring things from your closet that you want to have made - i now have 4 pairs of my favorite Chloe pants and and entire travel water e etc Also get shoes made at the same time - more than you think you want.
find a local tailor and have them customize a wardrobe for you as above just no fun travel.
BoldBoimlerIsMyHero@reddit
I get macys work clothes and workout bottoms. I get my workout and casual tops from Amazon. There’s a particular brand I know looks good on me.
Hot-Ad930@reddit
Preach. My favorite place to shop now is Bloomchic
ophymirage@reddit
Can you talk a little about their quality and materials? I have been desperately seeking an eshakti replacement since they went bankrupt (or whatever’s going on). Bloomchic has dresses that look super cute in an FB popup ad, but how do they wear/feel/hold up?
Reasonable-Mirror-15@reddit
I buy a lot from Bloomchic and I have never had a problem with the quality. They are having a summer sale now so I just got 7 pieces for $130 to add to my summer wardrobe. I've never had to return anything because of poor quality.
Hot-Ad930@reddit
I'm not familiar with eshakti so I can't compare them, but I've been happy with the quality and materials. I only discovered them about a year ago so I haven't had anything from there for a super long time. But everything seems to wash and wear well. Their dresses are my favorite - they're flattering and I get lots of compliments. I've also bought some shirts and blouses. I did have a pair of jeans (that I wore a LOT) get a hole in the crotch but I've had that happen with Old Navy jeans too. Their returns are really easy so you don't have a ton to lose by giving them a shot
aduirne@reddit (OP)
I have read mixed reviews about the quality. The stuff on the ads looks cute.
Hot-Ad930@reddit
I haven't had any issues with the quality, for the price. I'd say it's similar to what you'd get at Target or Old Navy. I really like their dresses and get lots of complimentson them. And returns are easy - you just bring it to the shipping area at Staples and they pack it up for you for free (I think there's other options too)
Bratbabylestrange@reddit
I would wear my Punk in Drublic short, personally. Maybe Flogging Molly for dinner. I wear jeans or shorts and T-shirts just about every day of my life, and I'm too old to give a flying fuck what anybody thinks about it. And I wasn't a ruffle girl even in the third grade.
sheemonz@reddit
The Uniform - Jeans and a black t-shirt. Also acceptable - light colored shorts w black tee. Or black shorts w navy tee. Come fall bust out the black pants and navy tops. I find something I like, I buy 7.
amyhenderson_@reddit
Wardrobe twin! I occasionally wear charcoal too!

Ok, so I resisted watching any of the million components of this franchise for the longest time - but I do think Joanna Gaines possesses the Gen-X grownup wardrobe of my dreams - plaid shirts and all
mldyfox@reddit
I feel ya, OP. I'm also slightly less than 5 feet tall. So not only do I look ridiculous in the stuff you described because it reads "trying to hard to be young", but ALSO gives the Bugs Bunny in ARMY fatigues vibe. Very few places even have petite clothes and those that do have those Peter Pan collars.
Plus, petite clothing is for ladies who are 5 feet 2 inches or less. So tell me why as the sizes get wider, they also get longer! Ugh, so annoying.
I'll be here in my jeans and plain t-shirts, Sketchers(tm) sneakers and scarves to fancy up the shirt for the office. Maybe a t-shirt dress on occasion.
UmSomeonesInHere@reddit
Land’s End and Cupshe for swimsuits. Quince for cute basic stuff. Kut for Kloth and Lucky for jeans - Nordstrom Rack and Amazon sell them. REI, Backcountry, and Duluth for nice functional clothes that are good for summer or multipurpose.
aduirne@reddit (OP)
I have about 3 pairs of poorly fitting jeans because I have given up.
UmSomeonesInHere@reddit
It’s best if you can try them on in store. I had a friend in the 90’s who worked at Nordstrom explain how jeans are cut in a huge stack of fabric. You need to try on at least 3 sizes of the exact same pair. They’ll all fit differently because the cut of fabric will be off by mm. Pick the best fit. Amazon has cute pants too, sometimes. Halara, Dickies.

We do and I got there. It is God's waiting room, but I have lucked out on some things. It is difficult for me as a tall person who is also a size 18w. You can be tall, you can be fat, but apparently yoy can't be both.
KatanaCW@reddit
Lol. Yeah a lot of the stuff I think I could see my grandmother in if she were still alive, but I do find some decent tops and the occassional dress. But I'm an average height person who wears about the same size as you.
Present-Two-98@reddit
I have a split personality. I'm all business caus in my work life, pretty conservative. I get home and it's band tshirts, Harley tshirts, jeans or jean shorts or a sun dress (think minimal and flowy). I am a closet hippie in heart.
AnUnexpectedUnicorn@reddit
My new favorite brand is Democracy. There's usually a fair amount of it at TJMaxx and Nordstrom Off the Rack (if you have those nearby). I'm in my kind of hippie phase - jeans with rolled-up cuffs, flowy shirts, strappy sandals, etc. Their jeans have a feature that helps hide the tummy without feeling cut in half.
ThinkLikeAMim@reddit
I second Democracy jeans. The fit is perfect and I love the tummy hider lol!

I swear H&M looks like a late 80s early 90s store! Your T-shirt will be coveted when you wear it!

I shop Nordstrom, Macy’s, Sak’s, White House Black Market. I found some really nice, classic looking apparel at Nordstrom. I was shocked. So I stocked up. I hate trendy clothes

My wife is in the same position, but has found some help at Torrid and Lane Bryant. Shes an old hippie type who isn’t into fancy stuff, and just wants to be comfortable, but not frumpy.
We just browsed Torrid together and she’s going to go there tomorrow to get some stuff for a big event we are going to this weekend.

Overalls, cutoffs and acid washed denim is back in style. I work at Old Navy and the amount of overalls I unpacked this morning was a bit much. And side note…..we were putting Halloween shirts out today. It’s not even July!!

I tried a couple of the style boxes where they send you a box of stuff, you try it all on at home, then send back what you don’t want. The first few boxes were hit and miss, but the more I got them the better the stylist understood the assignment. Now if I get one I love most if not all of the items that I get. I tried a few companies off and on but stuck with Stitch Fix. It’s becoming really repetitive now though, so it’s time for me to switch to another company I think.
When I started with them, I was a size 18-20 (2x) so definitely fluffy. I’m now a size 14 (L) so still not skinny, but getting the boxes made it easier to figure out what sizes I needed as I lost weight and they were consistent with sending stuff that fit my style too.
Responsible-Coffee1@reddit
I am just begging for some non t-shirt options without flutter sleeves.
MCTDive252@reddit
I’ve also been buying clothing at outdoor & athletic stores: LLBean, REI, Title Nine, etc.
JellyfishWoman@reddit
Yeah fashion is changing and what we think looks horrible hasn't changed. I wanted some simple summer dresses and everything I could find was either floor length, had princess sleeves or both. I found some normal tank top style sun dresses on Amazon.
I hate the way modern fashion looks but even more I hate the popular color palette. So much beige, orange, and avocado green. It's like the worst part of the 70's home decor colors and patterns on clothes.
PahzTakesPhotos@reddit
Torrid has only disappointed me once- that was when a dress that I love didn't have pockets. I don't wear it when I go out of the house though, because NO DANG POCKETS.
But the swimsuit section looks promising. I know they have physical stores if you prefer that, I've only used the website.
bebenee27@reddit
Agree. I keep going back to torrid because they have really flattering cuts.
HPMcCall@reddit
For beach time, I wear loose linen/cotton pants. Lotus and Luna online has some really nice stuff. Not Amazon cheap, but not ridiculous. The stuff is good quality.
4jules4je7@reddit
I feel it too, sister. I’m tall but not thin and I got my grandmas thick ankles so skirts and shorts are out! Ugh. We need fashion for the fifties and up
