Nineties HS graduates, what was your graduation song?
Posted by Ralph--Hinkley@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 636 comments
So many schools used Boyz II Men, either "It's so hard to say good bye" or "End of the road" in the early nineties.
SenseNo635@reddit
Early 90s grad here. I’m pretty sure we had a song but I honestly don’t remember what it was. Was likely one of the bazillion disposable pop songs of our youth.
spintool1995@reddit
Doesn't every high school just play "Pomp and Circumstance"? Song?
Most-Enthusiasm-9706@reddit
Graduation song ? I’ve never heard of this before . I graduated in 89’. Hell, maybe we did ?! I was one of those kids who couldn’t wait to graduate and be done with high school.
ladyleo1980@reddit
I honestly can't remember but I do remember the following year this song dropped. Kept thinking how perfect it would've been to walk down the football field to it.
slippedintherain@reddit
96 - Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here. If I remember correctly there was a small group who really, really wanted that as the song and most of us didn’t care so that’s what we ended up with.
Cisru711@reddit
96- Wish you were here by Pink Floyd.
Katerinaxoxo@reddit
Ugh some “popular” moron picked the theme song from Friends.
We didn’t get to vote or have a say. My entire class was pissed. That did not describe or summarize us at all.
Skank_hunt80@reddit
1998- Green Day "Good Riddance"
Carinyosa99@reddit
Not a 90s grad, but 1989, so really close. We didn't have a graduation song, but a prom theme which was Rod Stewart's "Forever Young."

1999, which was my grad year so yeah it was automatic.

Coming Home, Cinderella. Class of 1990. The other school in town picked Skid Row's, I Remember You.
dkenyon74@reddit
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday. Boyz II Men
bendingoutward@reddit
This was used for the kids what died at the end of year assembly each year through at least 97 at my HS.
So we didn't have a graduation sign outside of pomp & circumstance, but we still got to hear that one every year.
idiotsbydesign@reddit
Can never listen to this song again. Lost a good friend i worked with for a long time. I was one if the first to find out & spent the day having to tell others or confirm for them. He'd been with the company for a long time so everyone knew him.
At the end of the day I got in my car to go home, turned the car on & what's on the radio?
This fucking song.

carriestewbert@reddit
I didn’t go to prom, but it definitely had a song. I believe it was Forever Young by Alphaville, which was an odd choice since it came out over a decade earlier. We definitely did not have a graduation song though. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of this.
ttredraider2000@reddit
1997- Free Fallin'. The other two in the running were Learning to Fly and Good Riddance.
1996 had Free Bird, and I was super jealous because it's one of my favorite songs of all time. But I love Tom Petty, too, so I was happy. I remember feeling so relieved it wasn't some late-90s pop crap.

Neither do I. But I do remember that it was a song that I had never heard before, and I never heard it again. There were only seven of us. US three boys voted for something like Alice Cooper, the girls had some B-side to the Beaches soundtrack sounding songs. They won.
marshallkrich@reddit
I remember my fucking art teacher was obsessed with Eric Clapton so he was our prom song. I'm sure he somehow was graduating as well
COVFEFE-4U@reddit
This one goes out to all you couples out there (plays "Tears in Heaven," a song about a kid who fell out a window).

Pretty much, I'd get kicked out of art class for changing the lyrics and singing mine. Also, to let her know how much better Jimmy Hendrix was the better guitarist.

1995 - Friends, by Michael W. Smith.
It was extremely controversial among the student body, because when we were in middle school a boy in our class murdered a girl in our class, and that song was played at her funeral. I remember the student council trying to do damage control after they picked it and the outrage started, saying they were trying to include the murdered girl's memory in the ceremony, but people were furious anyway.

That song and album were huge at my school. People were buying cowboy hats because of Garth Brooks. Fuck man, I had one.
ManicOppressyv@reddit
Fuck Garth Brooks. God I hate country mainly because of him and fucking Billy Ray Cyrus. And then Billy Ray birthed Miley and gave us another fucking generation of misery.
Wise-Impression-8510@reddit
I graduated in Louisiana. You can imagine how big Garth Brooks is here since there are thousands of late 40’s women who would swear Callin’ Baton Rouge is written about them. It is lore that when he was here last and sang it in tiger Stadium, the sound was measurable on the Richter Scale
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)

BrogerBramjet@reddit
`95. Don't remember what the official song was but it started such a mess. Turned out that the song the class voted for was actually by Crash Test Dummies-yeah, that one. But the brown noses on the yearbook staff let the Admin change it to something poppy. When it got time to play it at homecoming, the DJ didn't have a copy. It had only been released over the summer- after the class voted but before the yearbook went to print.
They also changed our slogan. Instead of, "Shut up,!" (who was very chatty but liked), we got stuck with that damn Gump quote. "Box of chocolates" my ass...
Immediate-Echo-8863@reddit
My school chose "Forever Young" by Alphaville, which I believe is a song abouot nuclear war. Instead of "Forever Young" by Rod Stewart, that had hyrics more befitting a goup of proplr ready to graduate and make their way into the real world. We voted and Alphaville won.

We obviously thought we were super cool. We listened to other sentimental songs too. “These are the Days” and we all loved the one by Four non Blondes too…I think it was called “What’s up”…not really sentimental but it fit the times.

I do not remember. I just remember our school would not allow us to have our chosen flower even though we offered to pick and make them into boutonnières ourselves and the juniors who were going to usher for us were totally game to wear them if we pinned them on for them. Principal was a total buzzkill. His son was graduating with us and even he couldn’t convince home to let us.
We wanted our flower to be the thistle. We were an ornery bunch.
Oh, man. I went to Google to get a link for a picture in case anyone didn’t know what a thistle was. I wish Google had been around then. There were dozens of links to buy thistle boutonnières. Plus the symbolism is freaking fantastic (click link to see). With this info, we might have had a chance of convincing them. Not a big one, mind you, being from a rural Midwest town where thistles are definitely a noxious weed, but a chance.

I don’t think we had one. It would have been stupid, anyway.

I believe it was illegal not to use Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" as your class song in 1998.
kayparkersbiggestfan@reddit
Like an official graduation song? That was played at commencement? Shit, I have no idea. We listened to a hell of a lot of G'n'R & Metallica that year, however, so could have been "Don't Cry", "Civil War", "Nothin' Else Matters", or "Unforgiven".
bassplayer1446@reddit
94 senior class song - nothing else matters. I don't remember a graduation song

“Now and Forever” by Carole King from A League of Their Own soundtrack. Class of 1998. I thought it was cheesy when we chose it, but I was a jaded teenager. I love Carole King, so looking back, I feel like it was a pretty mature pick by my fellow classmates.

We didn’t have a graduation song, but our class song was “So What’cha Want” by the Beastie Boys. It was not played at graduation. 😂 It was however, played at prom. More than once if memory serves.

Mine was Today by Smashing Pumpkins. I graduated in 1995. It was between that and a country song.

Our school song was “Amazing Grace” for some stupid reason. We weren’t a religious school, I grew up in Canada, and i still wonder who made that choice. I can’t recall the theme of our grad though. End of the Road was our Jr High theme, and I always hated that song too.
So anyway, just your embittered goth lite art student checking in.

Alphaville, forever young. We were ‘93, so it was awesome weird choice, and there was a discussion of no one remembered voting for it , so it may have just been chosen by an adult who didn’t like our choices.
TheLogicalParty@reddit
Someone in our 1990’s class convinced everyone to pick a song from the 70’s. I thought the point was to pick a song from that year or high school years??
