"Meta Platforms tried to poach OpenAI employees by offering signing bonuses as high as $100 million, with even larger annual compensation packages, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said."

Do remember its 100 million bonus + 100 million salary!
iEngineered@reddit
“Yeah I’ll pay you $100mil, but you won’t have any time to spend it. I’m gonna need you working in your sleep too. “
sleepy_roger@reddit
It really just depends on the vestment time period. For 100 million I'd be willing to give 10 years, possibly 20 to a company as long as there were conditions and/or garauntee's on rolling payouts of the time period.
100 million is generational wealth.. and that's just the bonus, not the salary.
iEngineered@reddit
For a single guy - go for it! For other married couples YMMV.
My wife might initially agree, then hate me for actually doing it halfway into the project for feeling emotionally/socially/chronologically neglected and just spending the money to cope with the lack of family qualities that money can’t buy.
Not quite on topic, but generational wealth doesn’t necessarily help the future generation unless you put that fund behind a trust that requires them to achieve their OWN milestones. Or they they could end up just casually snorting coke as adults in public like Jordan’s son allegedly did. There’s no guarantee that our economy will even matter 100 years from now.
But ya get that money!
sleepy_roger@reddit
100 Mil it's what we call wife changing money.
iEngineered@reddit
I hear ya. But I’d rather lose the deal than lose my wife. You can buy likes, but not real love. Look at all the unstable relationships among financially wealthy people. Many are broken inside. I strive to be different because I make enough to be secure and call it a day. I love a challenging career, but I love family more.
provoloner09@reddit
10/10 my man knows his priorities
Jellical@reddit
Or just never got an offer anywhere close to this amount.
sleepy_roger@reddit
I hear ya, I'm a married man of over 20 years now, my wife would stick by me as she did when I was in the military.
iEngineered@reddit
You have a rare one and that’s great. Those sacrifices were surely difficult and hopefully no one person has to extend the duration of “pausing” their family life for monetary gains.
BoxedInn@reddit
Smart man
xChooChooKazam@reddit
There’s no guarantee you stay together forever and now you just lost 100 million :)
iEngineered@reddit
Haha. I’ve lost hundreds of thousands and my wife said “forget about it”. She’s a rare one and I’ll put her above everything except God. If she wanted to live on a farm Idaho, I’d drop everything today….as long as I have fiber internet.
ObscuraMirage@reddit
Now accrue that with all the people who have won the lottery and be set for life only to spend it all in months time and go back go being worse than what they already were at.
ZunoJ@reddit
Lol, fuck that. I'm happy being relatively poor in money but rich in time spent with my wife and kids
sleepy_roger@reddit
ZunoJ@reddit
The ones who matter to me will because I was there for them instead for some company
sleepy_roger@reddit
lol yeah I'm just messing with you. For me giving 5-10 years of my life to live forever with my family care free would be worth it, but my kids are grown (I have grandkids now!).
ZunoJ@reddit
Each to their own! I'm pretty comfortable but an opportunity to get out of the wheel would be nice. Right now 5 years would be too much though. My daughters are 3 and 6 and I won't miss a day of them being kids
sleepy_roger@reddit
Yeah I can't fault you for that, you get that time with them once. My kids are all grown and even though I did spend a lot of time with them I wish I could go back even for 1 day to spend it with them at those ages.
FullOf_Bad_Ideas@reddit
It's not going to be 10 years. AGI in few years, vesting in few years too.
Problem is - will 100 million be worth a lot when AGI is accomplished? Will you get anything for your attempts to accomplish it if it fails due to no fault of yours?
sleepy_roger@reddit
If you're fast enough at buying assets like land, and some AI resistant businesses you've got a heck of a shot!
Or a nice bunker on some property.
ElementNumber6@reddit
People deep in that industry may simply see writing on the wall that we don't yet want to see
Over-Independent4414@reddit
The only reasonable way to turn down that much money is if OpenAI has given so much virtual equity that they will make much more than that when they go public. If OIA is eventually worth a trillion then even 1% is 10 billion.
Wanna know what's cooler than 100 million? A realistic shot at 10 billion.
mr_birkenblatt@reddit
also, your wife and kids will have time to spend it
profesorgamin@reddit
That's you, these people already have large salaries and stock.
sleepy_roger@reddit
100 million is in a different ball park
thrownawaymane@reddit
That ain't a ball park, that's a yacht
TheRealGentlefox@reddit
I think you meant: "That isn't just a bonus; it's a salary."
Doublespeo@reddit
I take that deal.
I did that for the last ten years for (at least) less than 0.00001% of that offer
Possible-Moment-6313@reddit
Get the money, work for the minimal period required to keep the money, resign, retire. Profit!
i-have-the-stash@reddit

And we believe Scam Altman now?
brigidt@reddit
Hi OpenAI I am a 0.1x Developer - please pay me $1 million and I will provide you absolutely nothing /sarcasm
Scubagerber@reddit
If they hired me it would all be over.
MrHanoixan@reddit
If $100M could have bought them success achieving AGI/superintelligence in the past, it already would have. If having these poachees at OpenAI were the right people to lead them to success, they already would have.
Then, you have to wonder what investment is worth paying X for Y. Defense contracts?
This is just a game of who can best lead the grift, and get that money.
createthiscom@reddit
Why is this on every sub in every feed for days and days?
RottenPingu1@reddit
Marketing.
Syab_of_Caltrops@reddit
Yo, is it just me or does Altman look like he's already dead?
Comrade_Vodkin@reddit
He doesn't look fine for sure
evilspyboy@reddit
This is more about keeping the investing side strong rather than making progress. But with these amounts the investor slide deck should be changed to "For only $273,972.60 per day, you can sponsor a AI researcher in America...."
R1skM4tr1x@reddit
Do you get to watch it on webcam and feed it treats?

Now, he has created a market bubble, making ai engineers look more valuable. So u can say thank you to Sam for pushing up the minimum wage, at least for a while.
EyeBlech2000@reddit
This is a 5D chess move, even if Meta doesn’t offer a 100 million sign-on bonus. Now, Meta engineers will feel envious. And 100 million has become a market rate. This is obviously a lie; 10 such top talents would result in 1 billion in sign-on bonuses. They might as well hire someone from Deepseek? OpenAI is not that good either.
Cool-Chemical-5629@reddit
The fact alone means Meta is desperate and the fact it reached public means this honeypot didn't work.
jadbox@reddit
This seems like the opposite of Local LLM news... can we try just a tiny bit to stay on topic? This is not even real news, just alleged rumors.
CommunityTough1@reddit
Sidebar actually says "or anything related to LLMs"
jadbox@reddit
True but this is not even about LLMs technically, but about alleged hearsay about staff members. Sure, it's semi quasi tangentially related.
Amazing_Athlete_2265@reddit
This is corporate gossip, no more, no less.
toothpastespiders@reddit
Yeah, if I wanted rumors, twitter fights, social media marketing or hype, whatever I'd be on the singularity subreddit. It's closer to being on topic here than the gemini pricing posts and the like, but not by much.
GeneratedUsername019@reddit
I dunno. Meta is llama. Llama is the standard bearer for local. More talent working on the local product?
It's tenuous.

Sam Altman looks like an anorexic goblin. They all look weird and weirdly subhuman. There must be something very contorting about being an exec in big tech.

Holyragumuffin@reddit
Divided by how many though? This number is headline BS without per capita scaling.
madaradess007@reddit
this is a lie, why would Zuck offer 100$ million to marketers and sales people?
amarao_san@reddit
It's not Zuck offer, it's Alman said that Zuck offered. Now any normal offer from meta will be like 'give me $100M or no'.
Smart move.

Why would you assume it's for sales people lol. Sam's actual quote was that Meta offered $100 million to their top people for Mark's new Superintelligence Lab.

Now I want to get a job at OpenAI so I can get poached and then retire after doing my time at Meta.

Comfortable-Rock-498@reddit
Don't know about the 100M figure but Meta desperately headhunting "top AI talent" is true
amarao_san@reddit
Reality: Zuke proposed at most $20M per head, but now, not a single guy, headhunted by Meta, won't agree for less than $100M.
SiWeyNoWay@reddit
How much would it cost to end world hunger?
but_are_you_sure@reddit
A lot more than this. 45 billion a year til 2030 or 330 billion at one time is what I’ve read as approximations. And that’s presuming everyone agreed on the money going to improve world food infrastructure. Aka not happening
Ok_Doughnut5075@reddit
And this is the problem with Reddit. Every useful subcommunity eventually turns into a whiny political unproductive slopfest.
