How does the car know where I am going to turn? Turn signals are suppose to go on before you slow down and start making your turn. If you are already stopped and turning and then it turns on the signal, it's already passed the need for others to know what the driver's intentions are. I don't fully get this.
waybeluga@reddit
As far as I can tell, this is a misleading headline. The car has the ability to automatically switch lanes, INCLUDING automatically turning on the turn signal. Not just trying to predict when you're about to move the steering wheel to merge.
Religion_Of_Speed@reddit
Just to clarify because I'm fucking lost here, do you mean they're advertising that their automatic lane changing system now operates correctly by using the appropriate signal while doing so?
Realistic_Village184@reddit
Yes, that is clearly how it will work, based on the article. It's only when the car itself is doing the lane change. It would be dangerous for the car to try and guess when the driver is going to change lanes and signal for them.
This is just a misleading headline that's honestly clickbait.
futlapperl@reddit
Don't all automatic lane changing systems turn on the car's signal already?
velvet_funtime@reddit
has to be something more because that already exists as part of Highway Assist on X5, 5-series, etc
adenosine-5@reddit
Exactly - it can never work as written in the headline, unless the car can read your mind.
Electronic_Trade_721@reddit
I don't get any of this shit man.
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit (OP)
"One of the key features of the iX3 is a new computing platform equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride chip, which provides significantly more processing power compared to previous BMW models. An advanced sensor system, including cameras and radars, allows the car to more accurately assess the situation on the road.
The driver monitoring system tracks the driver's attention, using eye-tracking technology to not only warn of distractions, but also to actively assist in driving. For example, when driving on the highway, the car can change lanes on its own if the driver indicates an intention to do so, even turning on and off the turn signal automatically."
HENRYfondant@reddit
A bunch of the ‘25’s do this. If you’re on an access-controlled highway with driver assist plus active and you come up behind slower traffic, it pops up a small thing on the HUD informing you that you can change to the passing lane to overtake by glancing at the side mirror. If you do, the signal comes on and the vehicle changes lanes and accelerates back up to speed. Once you’re past the traffic, the same happens to return to the travel lane. It’s a little aggressive on the land change, and it’s spooky to let it do its thing.
cthompson07@reddit
It was pretty nerve wracking the first few days using super cruise. Having to trust the car will lane change and follow the turns is an odd feeling lol
NattyB0h@reddit
How would you rate super cruise compared to the others?
cthompson07@reddit
I can’t say, I haven’t driven any of the other self driving systems. But I do love super cruise. I drive 25mi each way on the interstate to work, and it’s amazing in the mornings with no one on the road. It also works very well in heavy traffic (to where it doesn’t try to get in the middle)
The one time I think it struggles is like medium congestion. To where the middle lane is going too slow for me, but supercruise tries to get back in the middle. Or it tries to move into the left / middle with other cars that aren’t as slow about lane changes. Disabling the auto lane change would make this a bit better, but then it’s just adaptive cruise with auto steering.
It’s also really great on long trips. I live about 1.5-2hr from Charlotte and have gone up about 4 times for concerts, and it does great.
I will say that I will keep supercruise for my daily as long as I have interstate driving to do. It changes lanes fairly quickly and signals automatically. The lane centering is also good. There’s a few potholes / shit areas in the lane on my drive and it does maneuver around those, but it won’t do like non mapped item intervention (like a deer running in the road).
NattyB0h@reddit
Does it work the same for manual transmissions?
cthompson07@reddit
It’s not available at all on manual transmissions.
ryzenguy111@reddit
I thought it could already do this on the i5? The car asks if you want to change lanes, and to confirm it you look in the mirror and it automatically changes lanes using eye tracking. Is the difference now that the car doesn't even have to ask you can just do it whenever?
lahire149@reddit
My X5 has all of these features already.
Prize-Meat7508@reddit
I was going to say this. On my X5 it only works when driving assist is engaged, but since I would normally only use that on a highway (interstate or similar in US) it does not feel intrusive. As others pointed out, most of us only signal when we are ready to change lanes anyway, so when I flick the turn signal stalk, the automatic lane change is quick.
swoopwalker@reddit
Sure, but the iX3 has the next generation of assistance system, which will presumably work better and in more situations. Time will tell how it actually does.
ClaudeVS@reddit
That's so dystopian
DudeDudenson@reddit
This is the first time I hear about this and this is completely wild to me. Having the car switch lanes because you looked at the mirror sounds like the most marketing lives in a fantasy world idea ever
blue92lx@reddit
Which in practice sucks. I haven't used this system, but I've used ones where the car changes lanes for you when you put tjr turn signal on and it takes way too long. The problem is that people generally turn on then signal when they're ready to change lanes, which means you've already checked if its clear to change lanes and you're turning on the turn signal to let others know that youre currently going to change lanes.
The automated systems work where you look to see if everything is clear, then you turn on the turn signal, then the car runs through the cameras and radars to be sure its safe, then it slowly changes lanes.
It adds probably 5 seconds to changing lanes and a lot of times if youre on a busy highway its way too late to change lanes by the time the computer figures out what's going on.
Arnas_Z@reddit
Yeah... I think you're supposed to put on the signal first and then check, but realistically this is a bad idea because it gives other drivers too much warning and they'll be assholes about it. Better to just check first, then throw on the blinker and merge.
permareddit@reddit
New X3 does it too when navigating
gadgetluva@reddit
That’s when you have the DAP system active. The iX3 does this all the time, but its a setting you can turn off.
From what I understand, the new iX3 includes an always on (that can be disabled of course) driver assist system that works WITH you - it largely defers to you most of the time, but will intervene when necessary (like you don’t see a car encroaching on your lane on the highway) or convenient (the turn signal thing).
KingKontinuum@reddit
This is so fucking cool
Space-Safari@reddit
You need your car to tell you to pay attention while driving?
Space-Safari@reddit
That's great up until the moment it doesn't "see" a motorcycle and side swipes one
sc0lm00@reddit
Bold of them to assume the drivers show any indication of changing lanes versus just doing it.
strongmanass@reddit
Presumably it uses eye tracking combined with steering wheel torque and potentially accelerator pressure. Of course that will only help so much if checking the mirror happens at the same time as turning the steering wheel. But then BMW drivers can argue to their insurance carriers that they indicated 0.3 seconds before lane change so the collision was legally the other driver's fault.
DefiantLaw7027@reddit
Bold of you to assume we look before changing lanes.
“I turn now, good luck everybody else”
sc0lm00@reddit
If they can figure out predicting erratic bmw drivers they can probably make leaps in self driving tech.
DefiantLaw7027@reddit
Every other manufacturer should just program their cars to leave a good 3-4 car lengths to the next car. That way we can just freely change lanes with a lower chance of crashing and giving other drivers time to react.
Except Porsches - they get priority over BMW’s
manystripes@reddit
There's an LED in the mirror now, surely that one single light gives you all the information you need to know about your surroundings
DefiantLaw7027@reddit
It’s always on though, must be broken
(J/k, my BMW is too old, doesn’t have them, or anything else electronic)
Stunt_Vist@reddit
Well wont work in Europe since most countries legally force you to have your signal on minimum 3 seconds before a manouvre so those cunts would still be at fault.
Gluecksritter90@reddit
He's got that lane change look in his eyes.
Lighthouse_seek@reddit
So if the driver looks at a car crash the next lane over, the car will automatically change lanes to get closer to the crash?

As a BMW driver who always uses turn signals, even for parking spaces, I don't mind this. Seems like a nice safety feature. It really bothers me when people don't use a turn signal because it's so easy. It's habit, just like buckling the seat belt when I get in the car.

“You think you’re in control…
But this machine? It’s watching.
Every blink. Every glance. Every subtle nod. It doesn’t just see you — it knows you. Knows what you want to do before you do it.
Before your hand even moves toward the wheel…
Before your mind even forms the thought…
It’s already there. Waiting. Watching. Judging.
You’re not driving anymore. You’re being driven.
A silent observer hidden beneath the chrome and steel,
an unblinking eye that never sleeps.
It tracks your every move, catalogs your every intention.
Your freedom? Just an illusion.
Because the real driver…
Is the machine.
And it’s hungry.
Hungry for control.
Hungry to decide… when you turn, when you change lanes…
even when you stop.
You’re not alone on this road.
The car is listening. Watching. Waiting.
Welcome to the nightmare behind the wheel.”

zxcvbmm@reddit
I remember a conversation I once had with a friend of mine when I was 10. Cars were new to us. Cars almost didn’t exist when/where we grew up. Anyway, we were talking about turn signals. It something like this: since cars can self cancel a turn signal, why not turn them one automatically? The other kid: because you need to warn other drivers what you are about to do before you do it. It’s obviously useless to turn it on after you have already shown intent by actually taking the turn. That’s it. Conversation over. 1. This is actually a true story. 2. Even a 10 year old is smart enough to understand the total uselessness of this feature.

RolandMT32@reddit
It sounds like the turn signals will only turn on automatically with the vehicle's automatic lane changing feature. In other situations, naturally I don't think the car could predict when the driver wants to make a turn or manually change lanes, etc., so it couldn't automatically turn the turn signal on before the drive does those things.

BMW drivers can't use turn signals, and Buick drivers can't turn them off. Thank God for technology!
testthrowawayzz@reddit
Interesting, but I have a question about the implementation. Is it going to predict the turn/lane change or is it only going to activate during the turn/lane change? If the signals turn activate while the car is changing lanes or in a turn, that's useless as the turn signals are supposed to be activated prior to the maneuver.
Last thought: is it really that hard to design a rear taillight so it can have amber turn signals under FMVSS and ECE standards? Even Mercedes ad VW managed to do that in a couple of their recent cars, but BMW is still mostly shared brake/turn signals. (Red turn signals but not shared with brake lights I can tolerate)

This is what last year's automatic lane change by looking at the side mirror that this sub made fun of was previewing. Ultimately it improves safety for other drivers and cuts down on their annoyance at no intrusion to the driver.
