What was the first CD you ever bought?
Posted by HuckleCatt1@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 833 comments
2 years before I even had a CD Player, I bought a copy of Toto IV for $32.99 at a local mall.
I asked the stereo guy at the adjacent department store if I could make a tape of the CD, and he was cool and said sure.
On the way home, I listened to the tape made from a CD source and was simply blown away.
$32.99 was a lot of money in 1983, but it was worth every penny. I still have/play that CD!

I am going to say Republica-Republica.Around 1996 when it came out.
Yes, I was late. I by chance got a cheap CD player then, I never gave it a thought before.
After high school, my lifestyle wasn't conducive to affordable CD players and care of CD media (cassettes were more robust, and I was living close to a zero bank balance. I knew then, it was stupid to go buy new equipment I could not immediately afford.
It also happened to be the time PC CD burners and media started getting cheap, so I got one 1998ish.

Grafakos@reddit
That's around $3000 in today's money.
b_o_m@reddit
How about the $600 I spent for an in-dash CD player in 1990!?! Remember the type that you pulled the entire deck out and carried it with you so as to not get it stolen? But since everyone else was still playing cassettes in their cars, it seemed worth it to me at the time...
To put it in perspective - the entire car, brand new, but with no stereo - was $10k.
I drove that car for 16 years, but went through 4 stereos in that time! But we had countless roadtrips with EPIC soundtracks for all of them.

I was very slow to adopt CD's. I was convinced they were a transitionary technology like 8 tracks and as soon as I invested in a system and replaced my extensive collection of tapes there'd be something new on the market to replace them. So I kept with tapes until the mid 90's or so. Rewinding and fast forwarding to my favorite songs, making mixed tapes to suit moods and occasions, etc. I think I finally got my first CD player in 1995 or 96, and spent the next decade replacing all my favorite albums on tapes, combing music stores for rare releases and the the like until I had curated what I thought was a magnificent collection. Problem was I mostly listened to music in my car and I doin't want to invest in one of those ten or twenty CD changer things that took up half your trunk, so I put all my favorite CDs in a big flip book and carried it around. Of course my car was broken into and all my best CDs were stolen. By that point digital music was beginning to be a thing so I started all over. Still miss some of those rarities. I know this didn't answer the question exactly but I think it is a quintessential Gen X experience.
To answer the question my first CD was The Cure's Disintegration because it was and continues to be the greatest album ever.

Well, not with my kids in the car, but yes parents I do still listen to and enjoy my old school rap songs. And I’m not the only one!
I do listen to a variety of music, but I don’t think you can just “grow out of” music that was the theme song for your formative years… Maybe I’m wrong, I’m sure someone will tell me!!! :)

It was a compilation disc from 1987 called Cutting Edge. REM, Replacements, Faith No More, 10,000 Maniacs, Erasure, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and a few others. I adored it. It really helped to shape my musical tastes. Sadly, some punk stole my 6 disc cd changer from my car when I was a Freshman in college and it was of course in it. It was Dr. Feelgood by Motley Crue. I still remember a long cardboard box that came in. For some reason my family tended to buy stuff from Radio Shack so I had a Radio Shack CD player. I had it attached to a crappy receiver I had using the headphone output. It took six AA batteries if you didn't have the power outlet attached and if you even breathed on it, it would skip. And it was considered a portable CD player. It came with a shoulder strap.

Like you, I did not yet own a CD player, but I had just started college and was DJing at the student radio station. They had an extensive collection of many songs on carts (they looked like 8-track tapes) and CDs as well, but hardly comprehensive. I was a little late to the CD game as I was initially really pushing back against buying my massive record and cassette collection all over again. So in 1990 I broke down, accepted my CD fate, lied to myself and said I wouldn't buy anything I already had on record or cassette, and told my wife, "I wouldn't mind a cd player for Christmas." She picked me up a Pioneer 6 disc magazine changer. I was floored, just wanted a single, but the step up was appreciated.
Now lying to myself yet again by thinking I was somehow skirting my own "don't buy anything you already own" policy, I picked up the Led Zeppelin 4 cd box set the next day. Sure, most all of those songs were already on all the LZ studio albums I already owned. "But this is the box set and it includes a couple tracks not on their original studio albums." Yeah, sure. Then proceeds to re-buy virtually every single record or cassette in CD format, except the duds obviously. I've since ripped all of those CDs in lossless formats and moved over to 100% lossless, owned not streamed, music files only in both CD and Hi-Res resolutions. This is my last format upgrade, don't care about anything that could be "better."

I held off on CDs longer than I should have, but had 500+ albums on cassette, and at the time, wasn't positive CDs would take over the industry. That said, my first CD purchase was through Columbia House, so it was 10 + 1 for a penny. I can't remember all of them, but know Butthole Surfers - Hairway To Steven, Minutemen - Double Nickles on the Dime, Ministry - The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste, and XTC - Skylarking were included. I still have all of them in one of many binders I haven't touched in years.
Coho444@reddit
Prob still owe money to Columbia 🤣
Use_this_1@reddit
How do you all remember this stuff? That was 30 odd years ago. If I had to guess I would guess it was something Duran Duran.
HuckleCatt1@reddit (OP)
I just remember how great the sound was.
But I also remember how bad I felt blowing $32.99 (which was a lot of money at the time).

Pearl Jam “10” at Price Club while I bought my first CD player. They didn’t carry many CDs and was stoked they had the one I wanted to play first on my new stereo. I can still remember the long plastic handle things that CDs would be placed in. Good times

In 1986 going into junior year in college I bought my first CD player along with an amplifier and speakers (to replace my boom box!) and got Beethoven's 9th (the Leonard Bernstein version, this one Leonard Bernstein CBS Masterworks Records ... For Sale | Audiogon). The shop (Tweeter Etc., big in Boston area in the 80s) had the CD for really cheap with purchase - so I did. Currently resides in the CD player in my car!
HintonBE@reddit
If I remember correctly, the first time I bought CDs, it was 8 of them for the price of one. Then I had to buy three more of them within the next year.

The Early Years, v.1, by Tom Waits. I was a pretty late adopter of CDs -- I think it was 1994.

Pretty sure it was The Cult which is surprising considering I’m not that much of a fan. It must have been what was on sale.
Flat_6_Theory@reddit
Pretty sure it was Eagles Greatest Hits. Or Moving Pictures by Rush.
ToxicAdamm@reddit
Damn, I didn't get a cd player until 1994. It was a portable one that skipped everytime you looked at it wrong.
I think it was Soundgarden - Superunknown.
solomons-marbles@reddit
Billy Joel, Kohliept. The same day I bought a Pioneer 6 disc cartage charger. Spent like $600 back in 88. My buddy & I shoveled driveways for two days and I went straight to Tokyo Sapporo (name?, now defunct retailer), not bad for 7th grader in 88
