Many companies use Indian call centres to run their phone lines. So criminals in India have realised the opportunity to run scams.
If all the call centres were in France, most scam calls would have French accents.
Besides, India is such a massive country, almost 1 in 5 people on the planet are Indian. So you could argue it’s the most likely accent to hear.
I had a recent scam call where the caller's accent was as British as they come - mild southern. The call centre of my bank, who helped fix the attempt afterwards, was Indian.
1. India as a whole has a relatively good standard of English
2. Wages are lower in India, so hiring a whole call centre of scammers doesn't cost as much
It's worth noting that a fair amount of these workers don't know they're being scammers, especially at the beginning. And when they do realise, they are trapped in contracts and then with the NEED to work.. what are they gonna do?
It's proper shit and also shit for the workers. It's the gangs that are laughing.

The weird fake English names are the best part. Like if I ring a company with its call centres in India I talk to Priya or Sunil or something. But if scammers in India ring they are called Mary and Josh 😂

Different countries run different scams. India is known for its (legit) call centres, so it’s also got scam ones for the fake tech support scams.
The UK has the fake phone contact scam calls, and of course Nigeria has the emails from princes who want to give away their fortune
Same reason many not scam calls come in an Indian accent, living wage is cheaper there so it's the cheapest way to get a scam call centre, or a normal support call centre.
Call them sons of dalits and the accents will slip 😂Indian graduates have a good grasp of English, while being hungry to make money by any means necessary. India has all the infrastructure to make calls to every nation for 40 years. Thus you have call centers with hundreds of thousands of people working in shifts to scam globally. Ignore the British owe 45 billion gazillion trillion looted blah blah we deserve to scam some old people in your country. They are scumbags who have zero morals. Don't feel sorry for them. Hiring is easy for legitimate jobs. They just make more scamming confused elders.
For the same reason that many legit companies use Indian call centres - because there are a lot of people in India who are fluent English speakers, technologically capable, and willing to work for much lower wages than you'd pay in the UK.
I feel so sorry for the Indian scamming call centres. You know Ai is going to make them all obsolete in the next few years.
In fact with infinite agents scamming people it’s going to be interesting times indeed when you can’t even trust your own eyes or ears to what comes through your phone or computer.
It's not always the case, but most of these scammers are from there.
"Workers" are cheap in India & international calling is far cheaper than it used to be, given that almost everyone has a VOIP telephone number now.
