I thought you tried avoiding females and calfs even if it's "culturally allowed"?
Groene_Specht@reddit
People expressing their disdain: you're all vegetarians, I presume?
fouldspasta@reddit
I presume you eat whales to survive?
Groene_Specht@reddit
I don't wat meat at all. No meat, no fish.
fouldspasta@reddit
Then why are you arguing with people who think killing whales is bad?
Groene_Specht@reddit
I also think killing whales is bad, especially now that we have understood their biology, intelligence and role in the ocean's ecosystems.
Yet, our western meat industry is manifold times larger, killing MILLIONS of animals every day. I think it's hypocrite to judge people living in remote places while continuing to eat your hamburgers.
I understand people living in nearly inaccessible places killed whales, caught seabirds in former times. Yet, today such 'subsistence' reasons are hardly valid anymore, and so harvesting whales and seabirds is not a necessity anymore, but a tradition some want to keep alive. I think (and hope) such relics of the past will soon disappear. We've already destroyed too much.

Yes, killing animals is bad. I'm a vegetarian. But I'm also a scientist. While both have negative impacts for animal welfare and the environment, it's impossible to compare the slaughter of domesticated livestock to the slaughter of wild animals that already exist in a small population threatened by pollution, boat strikes, etc. Whale deaths have a cascading effect on the entire food chain.

I have a scientific/biological approach too for many things in life. Your argument is true from a human-scientific point of view. But if you're the animal that is about to get killed, it doesn't matter whether you're a whale or a cow. You're a being with fear and stress, struggling for survival. I believe humans do not have the right to kill animals, now that we have so much alternatives. The planet would be better off, too, with much less cattle and other livestock, but let's not enter that discussion for now.

“‘Perfect’ is the enemy of ‘good’” — Voltaire
It is good to see people outraged by this instance of animal cruelty, and it is good to encourage them in channeling their outrage to a productive end that provokes change.
Let’s nurture the good, not criticize it :)
Groene_Specht@reddit
In another post, about this same event, I mentioned that our large scale meat industry is equally cruel, but more 'hidden' from society. I reject the killing of whales, but let's not fool ourselves pretending we are better or more civilised.
TheLesbianTheologian@reddit
I don’t disagree with you, but my original point remains true.
Groene_Specht@reddit
Truth is relative..Things are never black & white.
TheLesbianTheologian@reddit
Correct, which is why people can care about whales without necessarily being vegetarians. Thank you for making my point for me, lol

Anybody ever see that 70s movie orca??

I’m sorry, but this is flat out despicable by any measure of decency. Shame on the Danish government for supporting these barbaric atrocities. Unforgivable.

Seriously, fuck these people and all who belong to them. This is such ignorant behaviour in this day and age. A whole world of young people trying to fight for the good in their future, for something to be left for them in the natural world and here are this lot of dimwits riding roughshod over it. Y'all should go join Trump and his garbage. Fit company for you.
Separate-Ad6636@reddit
Disgusting, horrific, and sickening. Absolutely appalling that is not only ‘legal,’ but that it goes on at all and those who participate in it seem to revel in it.
