Will weed ever be legalized in the UK?

What are your thoughts on legalizing recreational, or even medical cannabis in the UK? I have been told London has a big weed culture. Does it ever get discussed in parliament? Or are the punishments for smoking just too lax for people to bother legalizing it?

The way I see it is that it's a lot easier to grow it at home and process than tobacco is and obviously home grown would be cheaper than government approved and produced, so the government would find it difficult to make enough revenue out of taxing cannabis therefore why decriminalise/legalise it.
dubzesquire@reddit
But having the option to grow & being able to produce something special is world's apart, there's a reason only a small number of brands have done something insane with the weed vs the other 99.9% who provide nothing but average ass everyday shit smoke. I think the u.s market is a prime example. Even though you can grow it, it still generates multi millions in taxes each year
dubzesquire@reddit
We need to legalise it recreational then tax the fuck outta it. Let's be real, for any UK smokers with some decent links. It's basically legal. We have insane selection of weed from avross the world. We have shops, cafes etc etc where you can go smoke. Nothing changes for us whom smoke now. Yet I think most of us want legalisation for the same reason..the benefits to our country & economy šÆšÆ. Weed must be grown, chopped, bagged & sold. Which all need premises, and I turn, staff. Which means job opportunities & ofc hella taxes (before the mandatory weed tax itself). I see nothing but benefits for the UK as a whole in regards to it. Really does make me wonder why tf aren't we hopping on the bandwagon
CharacterEye3775@reddit
It was legalised for medical use in 2018 but it's more expensive and more difficult to access than black market.
Same_Water7713@reddit
Sometimes it's more expensive and sometimes it's cheaper. It's easy to get access to if you qualify. Literally had it within days myself. š¤·āāļø Faster than I can get a d alert 𤣠(I'm not cool enough)
Special-Cucumber8981@reddit
there's actually loads of totally legal cannabis extracts out there that don't require a prescription and are dispensary grade (look into THCA)
Unlucky-Designer9157@reddit
Thca isn't technically legal no? Like it's hard to order without it getting stopped and a boot through your door?
I-was-forced-@reddit
My mates getting his delivered for around £4.90 a gram but you have to buy 20 at a time and I think the rules on it that it must be smoked in a vaporiser and this kit hes getting is 23%THC
leadickson@reddit
Yes. It must be vaped. Not smoked.
£4.90 a gram is a good deal. I pay £8/g min order 10g. Allowance of 30g/month
23% is not the most potent you can get either. *grins*
More expensive than BM? Maybe. But for genuine medical patients, not nessecarily more difficult to access - there are varied experiences and many clinics/options to choose from.
Ms_Central_Perk@reddit
You can also have it in an oil, which is what i get as I don't vape.
leadickson@reddit
Yes, but the question was about flower wasn't it?Ā
Ms_Central_Perk@reddit
OP hasn't mentioned flower?
leadickson@reddit
Implied since they referred to "smoking" but sure go ahead and continue splitting hairs.Ā
Ms_Central_Perk@reddit
I'm not being awkward? I was just saying as I think sometimes people don't realise you can get it in oil form too. The oil is cannabis. It contains thc which was why I mentioned it
CharacterEye3775@reddit
There's private doctor fees and you have to have tried two other treatments for your medical condition first, plus it's more expensive.
BallAffectionate4000@reddit
Itās not more expensive at all - the strain I get through Curaleaf is only Ā£5/g so more or less half the price of black market
3Cogs@reddit
What's the consultation experience like? I have had intermittent back pain for years. I've had a couple of opiate painkillers prescribed over the years and I'm wondering if that fits the criteria.
I like a smoke but I hate the process of buying on the black market. I'm getting too old for all the messing about and worrying about getting nicked. I have heard of Curaleaf and I'm thinking of booking a consultation. If I could get a prescription that would be ideal.
MrMiniMite@reddit
I use Alternaleaf for chronic pain and you almost definitely fit the criteria. I cant recommend it highly enough
BallAffectionate4000@reddit
Itās pretty straightforward - I joined Curaleaf a couple of years ago when they were called Sapphire Clinics, but the process is still the same. You have an initial video consultation with a doctor and talk about your symptoms, previous treatments youāve tried, and what youāre hoping to get out of medical cannabis. Then you have a follow-up video consultation with a clinician (could be a pharmacist, nurse etc) every 3 months, and a full follow-up assessment with a doctor once a year. I would recommend their subscription plan as itās only Ā£10 a month, compared to Ā£50 every 3 months for each consultation.
It sounds like you would meet the criteria as you need to have tried at least two āconventionalā treatments already. Bear in mind though that itās only legal to vape your prescription (if you get flower), not smoke it. You can also get oils or pastilles. They do a range of different strains to meet your needs and budget, so you could get pure CBD or THC, or a mix of the two, plus sativa/indica/hybrids.
Good luck if you do go for it!
3Cogs@reddit
Thanks for the detail, I might give it a try. I mostly vape herbal cannabis now anyway so that's fine with me.
limey91@reddit
Those fees are minimal now. Itās very accessible.
I-was-forced-@reddit
I gave up 5 years back for me own reasons but I judge no one who smokes my daughter still smokes every day at home and the smell doesn't make want any or give cravings . It's just took over too much of my life I'd smoke 2 spliff through the night when I woke for toilet. When I was awake I would always have one in my chops . I'd like it to be legal now cuz I'd grow me own for me daughter and me mates I was no stranger to growing it and enjoyed it . Even doing the auto flowers in a greenhouse at the back garden hybrid autos .
Hazeylicious@reddit
Legalised consumption, and legalised growing are two separate things. I doubt the gov would allow people to grow their own due to missing out on taxes.
GiGoVX@reddit
Is the THC taken out for medic use?
I assume most vape it for pain relief?
Plastic-Machine-9537@reddit
The thc is kinda the point.
3Cogs@reddit
No it's just herbal weed.
Ms_Central_Perk@reddit
I've been prescribed it for medical reasons for the past 18 months and the process was really simple and straightforward. It is a bit pricey but at least you know what you are getting and it's good quality too.
MrMiniMite@reddit
I am prescribed medical cannabis and this is no longer the case. It's incredibly easy to order, and a lot cheaper than the black market. I'm getting really, really nice strains for around £5/g.
I used the black markets for years and years. Haven't touched TOR since I got my prescription. To anyone that might qualify, I highly recommend it.
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit
Itās not that much more expensive at like Ā£5 a gram but you do have to pay for the Ā£50 consultations every three months to continue getting your script.
Guilty_Hour4451@reddit
More expensive? On the bm I was paying 40 a Henry on prescription im paying 55 for 10g
Same_Water7713@reddit
It's medically legal since 2018 bruh
FjortoftsAirplane@reddit
Feel like I'm citing the devil here but Peter Hitchens has, in his saner moments, written about how we've effectively moved towards decriminalisation without ever really having a discussion about it at a national policy level. And I do think he has something of a point there even though I'm very much pro legalisation.
The main thing though is that there isn't really votes in it for a politician. It's a bit like censorship in Japanese porn. It's a silly set of laws that don't really make any sense but how does being the porn guy further your political career?
It wouldn't play too well with the older conservative voters and those in favour are probably younger and already on the left. And because it's effectively decriminalised to have a small amount (local police policy is generally to do little to nothing, and penalties are low) there isn't a real groundswell movement to call for legalisation. It exists in a typical British apathy where everyone's a little bit unhappy about it but not so unhappy as to do anything.
webvictim@reddit
The best thing about living in a country where cannabis is federally legal is that the supply is trustworthy and reliable. There is no visiting shady dealers or not being able to pick up when you want to - it's just always around if you want it.
I barely use it these days, but being able to just go and pick up some gummies or a single pre-roll from the shop if I want to is so unbelievably civilised compared to what I grew up with.
No-Conclusion-3569@reddit
exactly! no more hanging out at a weed dealer for 3 hours haha. Nah bro I don't wanna play xbox with you all day I just want my weed and wanna peace out. hahahahaha
MoonieNine@reddit
Comedian Chris Porter said, "Here in California, we buy our weed in stores. We don't have to wait for Dave to get off work."
The_Flurr@reddit

No-Conclusion-3569@reddit
it will 100% be legal in the next couple of years. I work in the industry and I have sever clients making big plays in the uk because of the way the market is moving. At the end of the day there's way too much money in it for governments to ignore. Cannabis will be legal in 80% of countries within the next 5-7 years. I guarantee it.
Relevant_Insect6910@reddit
Yea I agree with this. With the current political climate no politician will risk burning votes in the next general election. It's too decisive to certain demographics and it's a golden ticket for political opponents to attack them with.
I think the whole political situation in the UK needs to stabilise first before people even consider it. I'm thinking maybe 15 years minimum if it is going to happen in the UK.
That being said I think the youngest generation, born in the 21st century, are drinking alcohol much less than the generations before them. So it may even be the case that 15, 20 years down the line, there will be a lot less interest and motivation for those demographic age groups who would have wanted to legalise it in the 2010s/2020s.
MixGood6313@reddit
Younger people don't drink cos it's gross and unhealthy; weight gain, numerous cancers, gas/bloating, headaches and nauseau the next day.
The effects of prolonged cannabis usage (especially when vaped) are marginal to that of alcoholism.
I wouldn't say that abstaining from alcohol usage indicates a proclivity for sobriety.
Ketamine is massive with the under 30s for example.

Ashwah@reddit
Ridiculous, given that the main reason it's linked to organised crime is due to it being illegal and if it was legalised the organised crime aspect would (at least mostly) be removed.
Sudden-Requirement40@reddit
I particularly like it's a gateway to harder drugs. Is it though? Is not more likely that interaction with drug dealers is a gateway towards harder stuff...
NoOven4402@reddit

This kind of article infuriates me because it's just bald faced lying. He should be saying that about alcohol and tobacco but he never will, because he most likely drinks alcohol, and doesn't want to be considered a criminal. He's so out of touch, it's painful.
princesscaraboo@reddit
Good points well made - and just to build on what you said - having weed be illegal must be a useful policing tool because pot is so ubiquitous.
Want to search someone? Say you smelled weed. Need grounds for arrest? How helpful - theyāre probably carrying a bit. Want to offload a foreign national? Cool - those modest penalties come with a PS of āā¦and since you broke a law we can deport you now kthanksbaiā
So there must be some heavy pushback to legalising!
daneview@reddit
For the record "I can smell weed" isnt a valid reason to search someone these days purely because it's so objective and could be misused
princesscaraboo@reddit
Good. Especially if you live somewhere like Bristol, where you'd be hard pressed in any public place to say "I can't smell weed"
sammypants123@reddit
You hear this about āwe need a proper national debateā quite often and, I just donāt think that a thing which can happen. I am not sure it ever was but definitely not now.
I mean, Brexit was preceded by some attempt at it and that was a shitshow of lies and posturing. And most people tuned it out and voted vibes any way.
I donāt now how to have open policy debates or how to get the general pubic informed about anything at all. But acting like āa national debateā is a possible thing that will resolve anything is just not realistic imho.
Unlucky-Designer9157@reddit
I think people forget that the United kingdom basically runs on money laundering and illegal drugs
offmychest2985@reddit
I think it will but maybe in 1-3 general elections time when someone who's either more laid back or younger take over as right now the only advocates for legislation are Lib Dems and Green. Farage at one point was also for drug decriminalisation but now is sending very mixed messages about it, including holding a royal commission over it (aka no). The biggest issues with keeping weed illegal right now are the black market where poorly grown stardawg with god knows what in it and spice are infecting the streets and the other which isn't talked about enough, is the pathetic drug driving limits that can catch you out after driving days, that's right not hours, DAYS after your last joint.
metal_jester@reddit
For interest if we legalised and followed the same tax plan as say Colorado in the usa:
Thier 2023 tax revenue on weed was 274 million usd. Against a population of 6 million in the state thats 45 usd per person.
Now scale that to the uk without any other factors just similar usage against our last official population figures youd be getting 3.1 billion USD/2.29GBP
As well as reductions in unemployment, crime and freeing up 850 prison spots.
Its a no brainer imo.
evanschris@reddit
Also the smell would likely be better than it currently is when people smoke! (As that seems to be the one thing most people complain about)
offmychest2985@reddit
Legalising it gives them the opportunity to control the smell in certain ways like growing plants with less pungent terps that stink the area up less, encouraging more people to vape it or take edibles instead of rolling a spliff or by maybe even promoting hash more in dispensaries than weed
Wise-Reflection-7400@reddit
Your logic on the tax thing is wrong because Colorado is bordered by 5 different states where it is illegal/not fully legalised. People cross the border to buy it.
44% of Colorados revenues come from tourists visiting the state and buying it.
putrasherni@reddit
By your logic
UK gets multi million tourists very year, and many of them wonāt mind a joint or two
Wise-Reflection-7400@reddit
Well thatās nonsense because people crossing state lines can bulk buy and thatās what they do. You canāt take anything you buy in the UK out because of international borders. No way would tourist sales get anywhere near 44% of the total.
MixGood6313@reddit
I've been saying for years that cannabis legalisation in the UK would be a tourist draw and it would save so many boring market and coastal towns from ruin.
MixGood6313@reddit

I've just moved from Canada to the UK, and discovered how much cheaper it is to get stoned vs drunk, provided you stick to <2 times per week to avoid tolerance. I'm talking by at least a factor of 20, after the initial \~Ā£250 for the vaporiser. Of course, most weed smokers have little sense of moderation so must smoke considerably more than that to reach the same effect.
For for people who can moderate, there is little point in alcohol anymore... What's the point when it is 20x the price, far more unhealthy and ruins the next day? So the Canadian government actually makes far less money from me for narcotics than the UK gov.
Filfield_no1@reddit
Also once people are buying weed from high street sellers, then they are not mixing with people selling a multitude/variety of drugs that are infinitely worse for you or society!
Specific-Sundae2530@reddit
They're often involved in other crime too. I don't think it's ever just weed.
LoudAdhesiveness3263@reddit
The only people blocking it are the politicians.. maybe in 30-40 years when they've all been replaced.. the second they put it to a public vote it's legalised, lol.
NomadKnight90@reddit
I dunno, admittedly I'm a glass half empty sorta guy but I know so many old fucks who don't want it legalised because "they don't like the smell" or "it's a gateway drug".
Cowsgobaaah@reddit
Pretty much bang on as to why it's still illegal, the fuckin newspapers have so much power over politics in this country is disgusting and then you have the other argument of they don't like the smell but then you compare that to the amount of money the government could receive from it, it's a no brainer.

Medical cannabis is legal in the UK. Has been since 2018 and it's not at all difficult to get.
EnoughBar7026@reddit
As a Canadian I find it wild that you canāt just go to a weed store in the uk and grab some pre-rolls or gummies. Personally I donāt partake, maybe a puff off a joint if itās being passed around at a friend gathering. Itās way less harmful (socially) then alcohol (which I do enjoy) and is readily available everywhere like the UK. But I guess itās the older generation that shuts down legalization, my parents still have that mentality. But going to a sketchy guys flat getting unknown weed which I did many times as a teen seems bogus.
endless_steel@reddit
Weed is less harmful by your own admission but you do enjoy alcohol?
ExplorerInQuietWays6@reddit
They do different things. When i smoke i feel happy by myself watching a show or going for a walk. if im drinking its always in a social setting and perks me up talking to people rather than brings me down.
endless_steel@reddit
Tjags because the weed you've had has been indica leaning. Sativa leaning weed will uplift you even for socialising.
zukias@reddit
I've regularly use both, and can understand. I like weed but it makes me less sociable than alcohol. Different narcotics for different situations.
Yourmumgaylol2375@reddit
Tbh I just want the freedom of not having to worry about being pulled over and drug tested every time I get behind the wheel when sober, since David Cameronās implemented his stupid drug driving limit despite admitting to smoking weed himself and probably drove the next day after smoking a joint, more people are getting caught WHEN STONE COLD SOBER. Plus most of the police and the stupid dvsa have the most backwards attitudes towards it as well.
You take out the huge drug driving issue this countryās facing now and things arenāt as bad however I do think that it should be accepted the way alcohol is, the fact I can drink fuck knows how much Wray and Nephewās and send myself to the hospital legally but I canāt smoke a fat joint on Friday and Saturday night without having to be cautious is stupid, get this backwards labour out and vote in someone with common sense and fucking legalise it, get rid of petty arrests and criminal charges over wanting to smoke giggle and listen to Cypress Hill too loudly instead of drink too much and cause fights and outbursts.
(just as a disclaimer, I still think alcohol should be legal as itās your choice to drink or not and despite my criticisms I do enjoy a drink here and there, however I also think weed should be legal asap due to the benefits it would bring and it would hopefully get rid of all the crappy grown stardawg on the streets and reduce the chances of getting laced with spice)
ZealousidealMilk3822@reddit
I personally feel like the uk should legalise weed especially different different flavours of cannabis I live in brum right I collect of this nice lad very respectful postage or in person and we just sit and talk about the laws of the uk lol.Overall I think weed should be legalised to a certain amount such as where you can smoke it and how much you can have on you but if you have a regular dealer with alot of flavours and legit prices then you shouldnāt care about legalising cannabis!
Special-Cucumber8981@reddit
Weed is actually already legal in the UK in hundreds of forms it's only delta 9 THC that's illegal - there's loads of places where you can purchase high quality cannabis extracts that don't contain delta 9 (have a look into THCA/CBG/H4CBD)

Not soon, because of a little something called the House of Lords.
Even if we were able to elect a government willing to discuss this and table it at a serious level, it would be put to bed by the House of Lords which is mostly comprised of a block of elderly conservatives and religious officials. Fun fact, there are only two countries in the world to place unelected religious figures on dedicated permanent seats in government - The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United Kingdom.
The House of Lords is exempt from our voting system, and while theyāre not technically supposed to completely veto bills, they can and do edit and revise the ones they donāt like into watered-down shells that have no practical use.
These are not the kind of people who would ever consider the legalisation of cannabis an acceptable direction for the UK, and quite frankly weāre lucky they let women show their ankles in public and agreed to ban caning children in grammar schools (although they pushed back on that right up until almost the 1990s - I think they finally caved around 1988). It took until 2013 to allow same sex marriage, and not because elected governments didnāt try sooner, but because the House of Lords spent decades beating it back.
So no, cannabis is unlikely to be legalised in the UK. It may gradually be decriminalised, however legalisation and recreational approval is not, as they, on the table, regardless of what the elected politicians do.
Mediocre_Trade2575@reddit
Look up the Salisbury Convention. If a political party puts it in their election manifesto, by convention the Lords will not block it.
No-Philosopher1442@reddit
not with Stier as our mp he is 100% against weed even though throughout the world its legalized and even western countrys like america has not only decrim it , they allow people to grow smoke and sell
the States have generated a combined total ofĀ more than $24.7 billionĀ in tax revenue
the uk has spent that to catch people smoking a joint , use it to stop and search and waste police time and also use it like pace to not just uphold the law but it misuse the law

Puzzleheaded_Fold665@reddit
Doesn't make sense when they want to tax everything but weed, I know people who can't even get up for work without a couple puffs. Definitely needs to be looked into so people can grow their own.
I'm in a group to get supply but also everyone is so helpful. Wether it's reviews on different strains, growing, vaping or buying. I would post the link but I'm not sure if the rules are allowed.
LordAxalon110@reddit
Make it legal for use at home only, tax it, put the tax money into education and NHS and more research.
We export more illegal weed than we import, the UK government already grows 2/3 of the worlds medical cannabis already.
Yourmumgaylol2375@reddit
Thatās probably the best way to do it, that and raise the driving limits as itāll be viewed on the same level as alcohol after itās legalised and no one should have their life ruined for driving 2 days after a joint
LordAxalon110@reddit
I don't think you should be allowed to drive with it, but that's just my opinion on the matter. I don't think you should be allowed to have any alcohol either if your driving. But I'm not a driver, so there's that.

Emergency-Pandas@reddit
It didn't used to be, but now that the UK moved to snorting cocaine so much, weed strains have had to get stronger to compete. Gone are the days of a chill sesh with a ten bag and a crate of beers, it's all knock-your-socks-off super skunk now.Ā
snozberryface@reddit
super skunk is a buzz word... just call it high percentage thc and tbh, this is a word more used by anti-cannabis propagandists.
It's true in the 80s weed was about 2-4% thc, now weed is anywhere from 5-25, but the average in london is about 14% which compared to some strains isn't that much some go up to 25-30%.
But then you're completely ingoring the fact there are people that consume cannabis extracts, these extracts are far higher in concentration, talking 90% thc.
I myself vape, and my vape is made from distillate, it's a US made brand, and it's very high THC.
You are right though, it is hard to get low thc weed, though easy to get a hookup that has artisanal grows that are more medicinally driven, I've seen some dudes, have a setup where they even go to a degree where they have equal portions of thc and cbd in the weed.
Emergency-Pandas@reddit
I wouldn't know, I stopped smoking weed like 15 years ago when everyone started moving to the super strong, super pungent stuff.Ā
evanschris@reddit
As someone has already said, legalisation would help with this. Not only because edibles and vapes would be more prevalent. But due to the black market, the strongest nastiest skunk is what most people smoke with the strongest worst smell.
Legalise it and suddenly you have tonnes of strains and varieties that donāt smell as bad (as well as non smelling vapes and edibles)
Legalisation would greatly improve the smell
Pete_Iredale@reddit
Most young people where I live don't even smoke, it's all vape and edibles.
veryblocky@reddit
I wouldnāt know. My only personal experience is the smell from people smoking in the street
utukore@reddit
Legalisation may help weirdly. It would open up edibles and vapes as an option rather than having to smoke flower.
I'm a medical cannabis patient and use a vape and a small carbon filter. My next door neighbours can't smell my medication at all now, but I can smell other people who smoke it from halfway down the road.
PassiveTheme@reddit
I live in Vancouver now and I find it funny because there's a weed shop on every corner with big bright signs in the window, but pretty much every public space bans smoking anything (doesn't stop homeless people smoking crack on the bus, but that's a different issue). It's already legal for medical use. As for recreation, it was reduced from a Class B drug to a C in 2004, but in 2009 it was returned to a B. That kind of indicates there's no government interest in legalising it.

No and it shouldn't be. In the hands of big business the price will go up and the quality will go down. It is more or less decriminalised in the cities.
zukias@reddit
I've just moved from the UK to Canada, and can tell you that weed is is far cheaper than the UK. An eighth on the UK black market is at least £30, vs £10 in my local weed shop. Far less choice too. You can't just go on a dealer's website in England and choose between hundreds of different strains of flower, distillate and edibles.
SleepySasquatch@reddit
Folks here saying how it's so readily available anyway. Why don't we then tax it and help fill the debt hole?
zukias@reddit
I recently moved from UK to Canada and I can tell those folks... legal weed is far cheaper. I can get an eighth for \~£11 here vs £30 in the UK. Legalisation == economy of scale and no need to invest so much in evading the law.
Wraith_2493@reddit
I seriously doubt it the only two partyās that ever win elections (Tory and labour) are both heavily against it and have been for a very long time which they admit publicly
Reform uk might have a chance of winning next election but they are also against it and have said that publicly
Cannabis has been legal for medical prescription since 2018 and will not likely ever be legal for recreational use. Too many proven side effects relating to mental health. They treat it as a last resort for prescriptions preferring traditional treatments.
Ruby-Shark@reddit
No on account of I fucking hate the smell. It's disgusting and gets everywhere.Ā Edibles? Fine whatever.

Ok, so ban smoking cannabis and legalise edibles, oils, etc

But you're ok with people dying from legal alcohol use?
GiGoVX@reddit
It's only backed by research https://www.healthline.com/health/marijuana-paranoia

It is. There are lots of companies that provide medical marijuana in the UK now. Curaleaf ect. See r/ukmedicalcannabis
MrBuddyManister@reddit (OP)
This is amazing⦠how do you get a medical card?
NorthCountryLass@reddit
So it is effectively private medical treatment but is rarely prescribed on the NHS. Sounds like a real con, to be honest. Itās a way for the NHS to avoid paying for it while private companies make money. Lots of the stuff is grown in the UK so where are they selling it? It is madness that it is sold somewhere but not here (unless it is through these curaleaf and similar companies. It would be fairer to all to legalise it and let people grow their own or buy it in shops
Individual_Nobody519@reddit
Can confirm, I recently received a script for 60g per month, im at the end of my month and I've just ordered my repeat. I've opted for an Indica dominant plan with options for a daytime Stativa. Costs between £5 - £10 per gram with THC up to 29%
Beautifully_TwistedX@reddit
You have to fit criteria obviously. Share your medical records . Have an interview with a pharmacist then a 2nd interview with a Dr who then helps you chose your medication/dose/method ect.
TeddersTedderson@reddit
No cards. Just private prescriptions. Check out the sub if you have questions. It's decent!

It being allowed only for people with specific medical conditions under strict rules is not the same as it being legal. Legal would be that everyone can buy it and smoke it as much as they want without restriction (other than maybe age restrictions)

I donāt know but it is a huge waste of resources to police home-grown or mild cannabis. It should be legalised but not for driving/machine operating. mrbill1234@reddit
Hopefully not. Basically means along with drunk people, we'll have people as high as a kite walking around. We have enough issues with the legal drugs we have now, and don't need more. Plus it stinks. I don't want to smell that all day long.
tygeorgiou@reddit
Green wants to decriminalise it and as people my age (I'm 17) hit 18 and can vote, I think green will see more votes. No idea if they will ever come into power, but that's the only way it would be legalized.
I really hope it doesn't get legalized, whether it's considered harmful or not, it ruins lives.
Fondant_Rough@reddit

julialoveslush@reddit
Itās meant to be good for epilepsy.
pcor@reddit
CBD is good for specific kinds of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndrome, where other treatments arenāt successful. Thereās no good evidence for psychoactive cannabis containing THC for epilepsy.
utukore@reddit
The entire reason it's legal is due to a child with epilepsy having had a profound benefit from thc. Google Alfie Dingley and tell me its useless for epilepsy.
pcor@reddit
I think youāve misunderstood me and misunderstood what the Alfie Dingley case tells us. I didnāt say it was useless. See my follow up reply:
Alfie Dingley is an individual with epilepsy due to the rare genetic mutation PCDH19 which was responsive to bedrolite. The primary active ingredient of bedrolite is CBD. It contains THC at sub-psychoactive dosage (<1%). THC isnāt providing a profound benefit, the CBD is, the THC complements it. This one case is not enough to tell us much at all about the efficacy, which is why I didnāt say it doesnāt work, but that the evidence base to say it does work is insufficient. Thatās why more research is being conducted, thatās why THC containing products remain unlicensed, and thatās why NHS prescriptions for these products are vanishingly rare.
And we are talking here about bedrolite, which contains THC at sub-psychoactive concentrations, for a specific and rare form of epilepsy. Even THAT lacks sufficient randomly controlled trials for us to say it has a good evidence base. The much broader claim that ācannabis is good for epilepsyā, as in someone without the PCDH19 mutation who has uncontrolled seizures should start smoking weed because someone on Redditās friend says it worked for them, is even further removed from an being a justifiable, evidence-based claim.
utukore@reddit

I'm not sure what you're accusing me of having edited into or out of which comment, but whilst the reddit app doesn't show an indicator you can see which comments have been edited on desktop or on the mobile site. Mine haven't.
julialoveslush@reddit
Fair enough. It was someone I knew from my epilepsy group. They tried CBD in other forms because they despise smoking, but that way was the only way that seemed to control their fits.
pcor@reddit
Thereās evidence of both anticonvulsant effects and proconvulsant effects of THC, but quality of evidence for both in humans is low, and the tentative anticonvulsant effects were mostly produced in preclinical trials by dosages substantially below the strength typical of contemporary street-bought strains. Itās not impossible that it could help some epilepsy sufferers, but the evidence base for saying itās effective doesnāt currently exist.

The fact that people still don't know medical cannabis has been legal and accessible in the UK for seven years is in large part why there's still so much stigma attached to it. And why the NHS still refuses to help legitimate patients access cannabis medicines except in extreme circumstances.
We need better awareness.
JennyW93@reddit
Iāve found it varies absolutely wildly by doctor. I used to have cyclical vomiting syndrome (horrendous, do not recommend), and most docs suggest the usual anti-emetics and come in for IV fluids. But Iāve had two GPs now (one in Scotland, one when I moved back to Wales) who immediately asked if Iād considered medical cannabis and asked if I would like them to write up a referral - completely unprompted by me. Tbh in those cases I kind of assumed they probably work for clinics in their non-NHS time.

I have. A lad I went to college with. He was from a well off family with a great home life but rebelled anyway. I remember the night when he disappeared and we found him the next day. Heād been sitting in his car on the moors the whole time, just staring out of the windscreen. He never recovered from the voices that haunt him and now lives in supported accommodation. You can talk to him, but he answers you about half an hour later. His twin brother carried on the family business and is married with a family, but I donāt think he ever really got over ālosingā his brother and best friend.
evanschris@reddit
So what you are saying is that our current system with cannabis didnāt work well then for this kid then.
Maybe if he had access to weed that was not through the black market this might not have been as bad. Conversely legalising it might mean these things happen less.
In the same way you might say during americas alcohol prohibition that we must keep alcohol illegal as you know someone who drank some bath tub gin and went blind.
SoggyWotsits@reddit
I was just replying to the person who seems to flatly refuse to believe weed can affect people.
Apparently in American states where weed is legal, thereās still a thriving black market. I suppose those making a killing before are reluctant to go legal and start paying tax on their ābusinessā. Just as users would prefer to pay a more competitive price from the black market, plus itās easier for them to stay anonymous. Iām no expert and I donāt claim to be, I just know what Iāve seen first hand and it was awful.
leadickson@reddit
This. Potentially. And also, I'd bet my house that it wasn't weed that caused it.Ā
pcor@reddit
Thereās well-established correlation between psychosis and high strength cannabis usage, and some recent literature makes a good case for a causative link.
I donāt think adamant denial of even the possibility of a causative link does anyone any good. Itās better to admit that it may be a risk, IMO, but support peopleās right to take that risk, just as we accept the risk that alcohol drinkers may become alcoholics or horse riders and rugby players might get a TBI etc.
Bellimars@reddit
Correlation does not equal causality. For example of your start smoking cannabis before the age of 15 the chance of psychosis increases, and yet it's entirely reasonable to say that a child under 15 smoking cannabis everyday is likely to have a less stable family life, and a multitude of other factors, like poorer diet, a greater chance of experiencing trauma in their life and many other challenges. Only a fool would blindly accept correlation as causality.
Bellimars@reddit
Sorry it was a reply to a previous comment in the thread clearly stating "the psychosis it causes" rather than your comment. I've needed up the place in the thread here.
Interestingly, however, getting down voted just for saying correlation doesn't equal causality and explaining it, shows the level of thinking i this sub.
pcor@reddit

Weed is legalised for medical use in the UK since 2018. I'm a medical cannabis user. I have a prescription. If you have a genuine health issue that's on the list of things cannabis can be used to treat (it's a long list) and have tried at least 2 other medications/treatments that have not helped, you can get a private prescription in the UK. It's an easy enough process, guaranteed quality in what you get, it costs less than illegal weed, it gets delivered to your door and you never have to interact with the potentially dangerous people that you have to risk interacting with if buying illegally.
Recreationally I don't think it will be legalised anytime soon if ever. Decriminalised for quantities of personal use, I think there is a higher possibility.
GReuw@reddit
The old bastards in parliament are perfectly fine doing coke off the toilet seats. Prioritise something for the plebs? Maybe in about a decade or 2 but until then vote for me with lots of grandstanding, using it to deflect onto some outside group etc and even then eventually I'll make sure to stick the taxes straight into my pocket, just like that bus.

Impressive_Pen_1269@reddit
It is legal for medical reasons. I am prescribed for sciatica caused by 2 slipped discs if you have had two standard treatments via your GP such as prescribed medication and physio and these haven't cured your problem then you may well be eligible. Costs are not too high and there are many different strains available at varying strengths and price points. I'll only talk about myself but it has been a great help to reduce taking strong painkillers and to remain mobile and functional. If you're suffering then don't knock it until you've tried it. For info I use a private practice called Alternaleaf.
cinesister@reddit
As someone who vapes it for my MS symptoms Iām happy with the current arrangement that itās available for legitimate medical use. I wish it was available via the GP and with my other repeat prescriptions though. The āclinicā system feels like a racket.
MrBuddyManister@reddit (OP)
Do you mind giving me a little insight into the system? I have a medical diagnosis for bipolar and have smoked weed my entire life to help it. I will be moving to the UK on a student visa this fall and would love to find a way to continue using it there to help my symptoms. Thanks!
jphtnplm@reddit

TheWishDragon@reddit
It was legalised medically in 2018. We've not made much progress since then but things like project Twenty21 were interesting. People have had their prescribed medication seized by police. Recreational? Not a whiff of change right now. I don't see that changing any time soon.Ā
Dear_Tangerine444@reddit
Itās been decriminalised in so many countries you would have to believe that the UK will, eventually, follow suit.
But I donāt think it will. Itās a conversation thatās been regularly had for the best part of the last 30 thirty years⦠that Iām aware of. The arguments are there, perfectly reasonable and logical ones.
I just donāt believe thereās a great political will to do it. Labour wonāt want to be accused of being āsoft on drugsā and/or crime. The Tories wonāt do it because theyāre fundamentally wound too tight to even consider it. Libs Dems actually might, but theyāll never be a majority government. Reform will probably want to deport drug dealers instead. Donāt know about the Greens, theyāre probably in the same as place the Lib Demās.
TLDR; No. Although I donāt think a lot of people care either way. Itās never to be a priority for any government likely to get in.
Initial_Research4984@reddit
Yes. I've been saying its going to be around 10 years time (around 5 years ago.. I reckon within the next 5 years. We can all already get legal cannabis cards if we go to private doctors. The hardest part I think is already done. Next is public perception of it, which will change over time. Especially since the tik tok crowds are quite loud and good at getting attention via social media etc. I think overall as a country we're more liberal now than we used to be. Its getting closer imo. I dont feel like I cant smoke it when I want it. I could go to the private doctor and get a card to do it legally but I dont even feel I need that tbh. I may go for it just to be on the safe side.

"The researchers acknowledged several limitations to their systematic review and meta analysis. There was a moderate to high risk of bias in most of the included studies, largely because of lack of information on missing data and imprecise measures of cannabis exposure. Most of them were observational and several used the same data."
This statement alone proves that the data isn't accurate, there's also far too many variables to get accurate results. So it's more guess work statistics than actual evidence of what effects cannabis has in the heart.
utukore@reddit
Not exactly breaking news. We know smoking is not good for lots of organs in your body.
