Where would you recommend that’s a “cheap” place to venture to domestic in USA? I am over the expensive tourist traps. I am looking to make a list of places that I would normally think I’d want to travel to. Bonus if you could recommend a place for my 15 year old daughter and I to go for about a week to bond and have fun! What places have been your favorite?

I live in Milwaukee. A lot to do in summer. I recently went to gatlinburg and loved it. Paid 100-150 a day to stay in a nice hotel and then the attractions are like 10-50 bucks so it wasn’t bad. We could have went 100x and still had stuff to do. Water and mountains was beautiful

Just go to any city and have fun! You can go to smaller towns like Milwaukee or Columbus, Ohio and have a great weekend

Washington DC, there's 16 Smithsonian museums FREE. You and your daughter can tour US Congress.

St. Louis has a lot to offer. In Forest Park there's a zoo, art museum and Missouri History Museum, all of which are free. The City Museum is downtown and is fun for all ages, your daughter will love it. There's a pro baseball, hockey, men's soccer, and UFL team so year-round sports, depending on when you're there. There's excellent professional and amateur theater and so much good food of all kinds. Six Flags theme park and some good shopping too. Definitely worth a visit!

The Pocono Mountain areas have a lot to offer at reasonable prices. Also Honesdale, Hawley and Lake Wallenpaupak offer hiking etc.

highly recommend the upper peninsula (Michigan) in the summertime- hiking, kayaking, beaches, etc. it's absolutely stunning and I can't wait to go back!

The Outer Banks of NC. Fly into Raleigh (RDU), rent a car and drive 3 and a half hours due east. Some might say it’s not “cheap” but you can find affordable places to stay. Outside of Nags Head it’s a chill place with beautiful beaches and miles of unspoiled coast. As these are literally barrier islands, check the weather during hurricane season! A second choice would be Charleston, SC. Fly into Charleston International (CHS). Would be easier to find more options on affordable lodging. Lots to do especially if you’re interested in sampling unique low country food, antebellum architecture and Colonial & Civil War history (not a teenage girl thing prob but there’s plenty of other things she would be interested in). Both destinations would be ideal for mother-teenage daughter bonding I would think.

Camping is #1. Have also gotten in the habit of taking a 3-4 day weekend to smaller cities for a show (music, comedy). Go to the show, spend a few days exploring the city, ideally enjoy some time outside in some capacity depending on where we’re located.

When I was 15, I would have loved going to Enchanted Rock near Fredericksburg TX. It’s a Mecca for rock climbing but hiking there is also fantastic. It is a magical place. There is at least one inexpensive motel in Fredericksburg. You’ll need a car.
