What does the lottery app say if you win big money ?
Posted by ExiledWiganer@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 342 comments
I got the "you've won a prize. Log into your account" email this morning.
I'd won £5 which was just credited to my account.
But what does it say if you end up winning the jackpot.
It's obviously not just £200m credited to your account.
Hairy_Silver6571@reddit
On the lottery website it says that it is in fact credited to your lotto account.
Sivear@reddit
I saw a TikTok of some woman who won the ‘rich for life’.
She said she got the email saying congrats and there was a message saying she’d won once she logged in.
BritInBim@reddit
It’s set for life but yeah pretty cool prize, takes away a lot of the aggro
MrRWhitworth@reddit
Rich for life, £10k a month for 30 years, works out about £3m
fraggle200@reddit
This was my thinking that you still need to call and claim your prize.
pureplay124@reddit
They call you, they don’t email apparently, I had a mate who won over a £1m and they called him.
BritInBim@reddit
They might call you eventually but they have said themselves they don’t in the first few weeks. A euro millions jackpot of about £80m went unclaimed for 13 days in Feb this year.
Clearly the person was waiting to check their tickets before after roughly they announce the location the ticket was purchased.
IndependentOpinion44@reddit
There’s videos online of people who won big talking about what the process was. They weren’t called.
pureplay124@reddit
Not sure about that
Intrepid-Patient574@reddit
An unsolicited call saying you're owed a seven figure sum? They must have fun convincing people they're not a scam.
TrashbatLondon@reddit
Friend of mine worked for a competition company that gave away cars and similar value prizes. Said it was a fucking nightmare to get winners to believe him.

Wasn't it VIP tickets to a baseball game or something? Stuff You Should Know podcast done an episode on it fairly recently.

Not sure about the podcast but there's video of it happening here.

No worries, the event wasn't the memorable part of the story
Fickle_Hope2574@reddit
Simpsons or family guy spoofed it if memory serves
FreeKing1084@reddit
It was on Simpson before it happened..🤣
Wretched_Colin@reddit
Both of them did. In the Simpsons, it was Chief Wiggum getting people with outstanding warrants in.
In Family Guy they were actually giving boats away, but offered a chance to swop for an envelope prize, which Peter did. All his neighbours got a boat, except Peter, who received tickets for a comedy club.
Fickle_Hope2574@reddit
YES! But the box could have a boat
IAM_THE_LIZARD_QUEEN@reddit
Brooklyn Nine Nine did too but with giving away cruises

lickyagyalcuz@reddit
Aren’t those usually raffles you have to pay to enter to win specific cars? Surely thats enough information to make you think it might be legit
TrashbatLondon@reddit
Nah, this particular company was one of the free to enter things, but you have to go through 15 pages of marketing offers before you get your confirmation.
deadlygaming11@reddit
Im not surprised. I think the best way is to send an email saying they have won big and will receive a phone call soon and to also log into their account, which will have the same message.
labbusrattus@reddit
I can fully believe this, my dad once won a family safari trip to Kenya in some raffle and it took many calls ended by my mum and a separate call to my dad by mum to actually realise.
MargotChanning@reddit
I nearly missed out on a hamper we’d won through Nectar as I was so sceptical about it. It was one of those prize draws where you were entered when you bought a certain brand of food. It was part of our regular shop so I didn’t even realise we were in it.
Miffybunny98@reddit
Woah! Never knew companies gave away luxury prizes. I have seen similarish ads but convinced myself it was all fake or marketing tactics.
Sagittarius1996@reddit
Hahahaha 😂
shortydont@reddit
They confirm it through the app, anything over 50k means a visit to your house. 2 members of the team will attend and confirm the ticket/purchase. They will not pay big money into your own bank account. The set up a new bank account for you. If you win big there is loads of support for understanding money and also how you are paid the money. It’s not always a big lump in the bank. It is normally split over certain payments and a monthly payment
pureplay124@reddit
He had their number saved in his phone but he had to pass security as well!
Jebble@reddit
Yeh so having security questions asked when they call you, is a massive red flag.
Jlw2001@reddit
In my job I do outbound calls for a bank. Nightmare convincing people but we do need to go through a bunch of security questions
droznig@reddit
Honestly, it's fucking stupid that you do it at all. The process should be "Hey, this is your bank, here is a reference number. Please call us back using the number on the back of your card and provide this reference to get back to me"
The fact that banks are still cold calling people and asking them for all the details that some one else would need to compromise their account is fucking wild and it just makes fraud so much easier.
dragon8733@reddit
Sometimes, it's necessary for a bank to ring customers, eg suspected fraud. The bank can't always rely on customers responding to a text or a letter
droznig@reddit
Sure, and the customer should call them back on a known good number. Nobody should ever give any information out to some one that calls them directly.
Fraudsters rely on the fact that banks have normalise this practice in order to steal peoples information and their money.
WernerHerzogEatsShoe@reddit
You do what? My bank specifically tells me it will never call and ask for my details so I wouldn't tell you anything either lol
Jebble@reddit
I get that, but these people should be calling you, not the other way around. A bank really shouldnt outcall and ask then any of that, that's literally how people lose their money.
Tacklestiffener@reddit
Always say you'll call them back, and use a different phone.
Kaioken64@reddit
Why would you need to use a different phone?
BeatificBanana@reddit
Because scammers can do this clever thing where they pretend they've hung up, but really they have kept you on the line. So when you go to call a different number from the same phone, you get through to the scammers again.
So if you ever get a call from a company and you're unsure if it's legit, always hang up, google the company's number, and call it from a different phone
HoundParty3218@reddit
This scam hasn't worked in decades. It relies on people having a landline and one of those old fashioned phones without a digital display.
Jebble@reddit
Eh sure, that's why banks and other companies still warm you for it, and scam callers are a bigger problem then ever. You're delusional if you think this hasn't worked in decades.
HoundParty3218@reddit
Scam calls are definitely still a thing but this particular scam only works with landlines and analogue phones which is why calling back on a different phone hasn't been recommended by banks etc for a long time.
Here in the UK, no one will even sell you a new landline anymore. The customer base was too small to be viable and the last holdouts are being moved to VOIP handsets.
Jebble@reddit
I didn't see the original comments, Reddit made it look like you replied directly to me. The landline thing sure, but that's irrelevant like you say. Banks should still not call you and ask you for your details, that's massive red flag and I would move banks immediately if they're that stupid.
Jebble@reddit
Wtf are you on about, you don't need a landline to call someone and get their personal information out of them. Almost all banks will tell you that they will never call you and now they start to show you in their app if they are currently on the phone with you are not. I'm not sure what scam you're thinking off but it's not what we're talking about, clearly.
mata_dan@reddit
Er, the international phone system simply allows you to spoof anything you want and fake any call or text you want. There is zero security. All someone has to do is buy access through a chinese company and they can do anything they want.
BeatificBanana@reddit
I know someone who's fallen for it. Not everyone can see very well
Jebble@reddit
Agree, but the bank should inform you of that instead of asking security questions during an outcall. I'd literally switch banks for this.
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
I remember a mate of mine getting a call from Three and they asked him to confirm his security questions before they would tell him why they'd even called him.
He was a legitimate Three customer and further enquiries revealed it was a legitimate call.
TheAdamGalloway@reddit

Haven’t played lotto regularly and never had the app so I might be missing something here but can you just… check the winning numbers to confirm if it’s real?
Intrepid-Patient574@reddit
You can check if you've won but getting a call from a number that's probably withheld asking you for security details so they can pay you millions of pounds is not a good look
taskkill-IM@reddit
Didn't one of the guys who won the Jackpot on the Euromillions say he got an email?
jamawg@reddit
The draw is about 9pm or so, I think. Does someone work overtime to call you immediately, or do they wait until office hours the next morning?
I get up at 5am to go to work and would be pissed if I got a call at 9 telling me I could have had a lie in

I rarely answer unsolicited calls. Would it not show up on the app?
pureplay124@reddit
This is what happened
daveycakesss@reddit
Wonder what happens if you don’t answer, I rarely answer the phone to people I know, let alone unknown numbers
pureplay124@reddit
If you don’t answer they just give the money to the next winner. Not
AttorneyDramatic1148@reddit
The message if you won big money is that "You have won an exciting prize, please log in to your account"
Now if we don't have the word 'exciting' in our emails; then we don't bother checking.
On a Euromillions lottery draw last year for 120m, I was a single number short and won around £800. Was really disappointed to be honest, to come down close but receive so little in comparison was underwhelming.
AttorneyDramatic1148@reddit
matt3633_@reddit
Were those all LDs? Interesting you had 7 & 34 in all 4 lines, as well as 7, 9 or 11 as pretty much the only LS numbers
I’d have been fuming seeing that before the draw
plutonem97@reddit
Definitely not lucky dips. Look at lines 2 & 3. And got very very close with the 4th, so I wanna know their method 😂
Icy_Conversation_541@reddit
I'd be fuming if I got all but one number and got less money than three on Lotto HotPicks.
EminenceGris3@reddit
I got all six numbers in the national lottery about six months ago. Three on one row, and three in the next 🤣
Interceptor@reddit
There was a thread in this not long ago, and someone mentioned that if you win a small amount, you get an email that begins "good news!".., but if it's a big win, the email says " great news!", and usually arrives by 10pm on the night. No idea if that's true though!
Willz093@reddit
I’ve also heard that the bigger the win the earlier the email to be fair! Gonna start checking my inbox from 10pm on draw nights now!
IndependentOpinion44@reddit
Makes sense. There’s a lot of permutations to check, the easiest being the big win numbers.
perfectlyclear69@reddit
Better than the emails they used to send "We have some exciting news about the ticket you bought for the draw".
Incredibly exciting to "win" £2.20 isn't it. Especially when the ticket was £2.50.

I worked in a shop years back with a lottery machine and I had to cash tickets all the time,we could cash them up to a certain value and it was was a few thousand (4 digit, not 5) we'd point them towards the Post Office who could pay them out.
One time I put a ticket in the machine and it just said in all caps "Please Contact Camelot" lol
Eclipse453@reddit
I once won a prize when I had an active ticket but I took a break from my account so couldn't log in to check.
Email said to phone up.
I won £3...
4BennyBlanco4@reddit
I think its the same email but I've heard the bigger the prize the sooner the email is sent, so if you get something at like 1am chances are its a fiver if you get an email soon after the draw then its probably significant.
Intelligent-Day-6976@reddit
Went to check a scratch card and the machine made a cheering clapping noise when scanned the guy said it was a 20£ win but I'm not sure as I have never heard the machine make that noise on other wins
Weareallgoingtoabyss@reddit
Most of the time the staff turn off the volume on those machines as it's effing annoying. It does it on every win if volume is on
AutoModerator@reddit
It looks like you've written the pound sign (£) after the number 20, but it should be written before the number like this:

Couldn't check my account while I was abroad so spent the entire flight home wondering if I was a millionaire.
I think the total win was £3.70
WeeBo2804@reddit
I had the email one week, it was euromillions and up in the £100+mil jackpot. Said to sign into account but I couldn’t. Error that there was an issue and to try later. I of course took this to mean I’d won the big ‘un. They were running extra security checks etc?.. finally got signed in the next day and I’d been credited..£3.20.
alphaDsony@reddit
What if you won millions but from a ticket not the app, how do you cash that?
frankbowles1962@reddit
You contact National Lottery by phone who verify your ticket and arrange for you to get your prize. I believe they offer support services to big winners as to how to manage the money
londonbrewer77@reddit
Oh they absolutely do. There was a discussion on this very fact just a couple of weeks ago.
They’ll get people to you within the day to help you do everything, setting up accounts, trusts, all that.
Go2Matt@reddit
They only offer that if you go public...
londonbrewer77@reddit
There is absolutely no benefit to going public, everything is exactly the same in terms of support.
The ones who chose to go public did so because they felt it was easier than keeping up the facade with friends.
Source: I used to work in this area - not with Camelot but for the bank who dealt with lottery winners.
Go2Matt@reddit
Camelot said themsleves you only get the support from them if you agree to go public.
However the same support is out there you just pay for it yourself
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
Do they even 'give' you the money? Or is it all set up and you're simply given access to it?
I highly doubt they'll just BACS/CHAPS £200m. My guess it's more like The Apprentice where you get a brand new bank account with a starting balance of £250k.
MiddleAgeCool@reddit
This is very specific to the North of England and not from personal experience, unfortunately.
You attend the lottery offices which is in a very unassuming business park. Think call centres over manufacturing.
They do checks, you have a glass of champagne and your photo with an over sized cheque. If you want to remain anonymous that photo is kept for their records and not released to the marketing / PR side of the business. They then call a taxi for you and you're taken to a bank in the city centre where you meet with a personal banker who provides you with financial advice including giving you details of financial advisers you may want to speak to. From what I understand the advice focuses on "don't spend it all on luxuries tomorrow". You receive an advance while everything is being set up for you. You're also told to go on holiday for a couple of weeks to get away from the world and think things out before you make any big purchases.
ian9outof10@reddit
That is basically exactly what they do. They work with the banks, directly. You chose the bank, so you can keep yours if you like it. But you will get a private banking service for big wins. It used to be Coutts back when it first started, but these days those services are pretty common.
That_Excitement_927@reddit
My mate said a few months ago that they won't just allow you to transfer any of the money from the private banking account to your main accounts that you use everyday. I just looked at him and said "don't be fucking stupid, of course you can transfer it".
Like if I wanted to use that money to pay off my credit card debt and overdrafts, what are the private banks gonna do, say "lol no"? It's my money, I won it. I can't transfer all of it and that would be stupid anyway, but I could at least put 10k into my current account each month if I wanted to.
Longjumping-Act9653@reddit
My dad won £2.5m with his office syndicate and that’s exactly what happened. They set him up a Coutts account and allocated a financial adviser which was a waste of time as the money was immediately split between 6 of them which made it a bit less impressive. Enough for everyone to pay off their mortgages and live a bit more comfortably, but not enough for anyone to quit their job. And he had a paper ticket, so actually had to drive to his nearest Camelot office to deal with it.
200_Shmeckles@reddit
Wow what an inconvenience. I’m surprised he didn’t tell them to stick it! 🙄😂 /s

biggles1994@reddit
My nationwide flex direct account actually explicitly states it has a “maximum balance” of £5 million
Nationwide isn’t set up to handle uber-wealthy customers it seems.
Xaphios@reddit
My guess would be that they don't want anyone being able to instantly withdraw 25m. A few of those accounts closing simultaneously might be uncomfortable. You also don't want to put 10s of millions into a basic account with bugger all interest so it probably works out for everyone.
ian9outof10@reddit
For large balances you’d need private banking. Nationwide doesn’t really do private banking.
gilesey11@reddit
They will be, you just aren’t putting 200m into one bank account.
Hairy_Al@reddit
Most High street current accounts have a maximum balance. Pretty sure it's less than tens (or hundreds) of millions. Also they prefer you to have an account with a bank that knows how to be "discreet"
ian9outof10@reddit
Pretty much every UK bank has private banking now.
Alexander-Wright@reddit
Most high street banks are not set up for accounts with that much money.
Banks such as Coutts have accounts and services for high net worth individuals.
For a really big win, you'd probably want to have most of it held in an investment portfolio. £200 million is an hour's trading to an investment banker.
Nolsoth@reddit
Dunno about the UK. But in NZ they do simply xfer the winnings (our biggest is only $30 million into your account (after helping verify account numbers etc).
Mate won a million a few years back and had the money in his account within 3 days of cashing in the ticket and going through the process.
JeremyTwiggs@reddit
Wasn’t there an audio recording of someone ringing up and being told he had won millions (maybe 50mn) and his reaction was underwhelming?
smallbirthday@reddit
Back in December I was listening to a big money giveaway (around £300k) on the radio during my drive home and the guy who won was the most deeply underwhelmed person ever. Cracked me up how hard the presenters had to work to get the slightest bit of appreciation.
Express-World-8473@reddit
Yup they help you with setting up a bank account of your preference (they suggest to go with Coutts apparently) and help you a bit on how to manage that amount.
londonbrewer77@reddit
Barclays Wealth, but yes. Obviously most people coming into those winnings will have no experience of that amount of money so they’re actually quite vulnerable.
Express-World-8473@reddit
I would also do the same if I won such a huge amount. The one or two percent difference between banks wouldn't matter much to me.
TehDragonGuy@reddit
I think you're meant to post or take it to the main headquarters in Watford. However I imagine if it was literally millions they probably have some sort of service to make it easier than that.
Superspark76@reddit
Apparently there are discrete people who go out to winners homes to verify tickets and identities.
bopeepsheep@reddit
Non-discrete people are conjoined twins. It'd be rather harder to hide a visit from the neighbours if they came round. (Discreet is the spelling you wanted, but I like the one you chose.)

thatsacrackeryouknow@reddit
Fun fact, you're aren't legally allowed to purchase tickets outside of the UK, with exception of the Euromillions (but then you must purchase from the country you're currently in). The only away this rule is that you have a Direct Debit setup/purchased your tickets in advance of your holiday (for example buying a 4 week ticket).
https://www.national-lottery.co.uk/account-terms?icid=bsp:na:tx
PirateCraig@reddit
Oh shit. My wife’s been logging into my account to buy tickets whilst I’m in Spain . Does that count ?
2024-YR4@reddit
There is a rule somewhere saying you gave you purchase the ticket within the UK or something, even for digital ones on the app.
Imagine you do a Euromillions ticket on holiday abroad, come home and you win the jackpot.
But then it gets denied cos they found out you were in Benidorm at the time 😂
ORNG_MIRRR@reddit
The app uses geolocation, so a vpn alone won't trick it. If you use android you can get an app like Fake GPS and your phone will think it's in the UK and you can access the app.
BendyMonkey@reddit
That’s exactly how much I won last night 😂
PeteWTF@reddit
I got the email on the first day of my holiday, first thing I did when I landed was open the app to see around the same

I received the email boarding my commute to work when I was 20ish. The journey is full of fields and tunnels so signal was sketchy. After 10 minutes I gave up trying to log in, and sat there planning my dramatic "fuck you, im quitting" as I got to my desk.
But yea, it was £3.

I matched 4 numbers and the Thunderball once, whilst I appreciated the unexpected 250 quid I couldn't stop thinking for weeks about how one number was a £499,750 difference even though there is actually a crazy difference in odds mathematically (1 in 47,416 vs 1 in 8,060,598)
I'm also one of those who will check my results literally as soon as the draws happen and a couple of times now I've accidentally thought I hadn't matched on the Euromillions only to get an email...OMG I must have won the million quid raffle! Nope I didn't check properly initially and won £3.70

I read somewhere a while ago when you login it comes up with a red banner saying something along the lines of please call the phone number
Competitive_Pen7192@reddit
I've heard something to this effect.
Basically if the website doesn't tell you the amount and instead tells you to ring up then you've won big...
Spid1@reddit
Around 18 years ago I went into the shop to have my ticket checked and it told the shop assistant I had a winner but not how much. So my mind started RACING.
She printed out the numbers and I can't remember if she checked or I did - I'd got 5 numbers. £1800 or so but for about a minute I thought I'd won something massive
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
That's the big problem I have with the whole thing.
Six numbers + 2x Mega Uber Bonus Ballz? That's £150m.
Six numbers + 1 Mega Uber Bonus Ball? That's £200k.
Six numbers and nothing else? £6000
fussyfella@reddit
A lot of research was done on how best to optimise the lottery's income, and it turns out a really big win often enough for people to believe it happens and then a lot of of smaller prizes, so most people know someone who won, or win something themselves is optimal. The large but not earth shattering prizes do little to encourage more people to play.
Frankly, if you want better average returns (the lottery is average negative) and better odds of winning a decent sized prize (in the tens of thousands to millions), you are far better off with old fashioned Premium Bonds. They have an average positive return (around 4%), you are more likely to win millions (just not mega millions), and you can get your money back too.
Competitive_Pen7192@reddit
Premium Bond returns aren't great either... Only plus side it's essentially free other than the money you've put into it. Most mediocre/safe investments beat their return for most average luck people.
fussyfella@reddit
I agree the returns are not great, but they are at least positive unlike the lottery. I just stick some money in them and leave it there - it is not a real investment, but it is a risk free alternative that could still win decent money.
Spid1@reddit
I bought my mum some fancy face cream and put half in Northern Rock shares because they’d just fallen massively and I thought they’d bounce back. Turns out it was the start of the crash lol
pb-86@reddit
Used to work in the kiosk in morrisons, once a ticket is over £500 we just get a message on screen saying we couldn't pay out and to follow the next steps (the post office could pay out up to £20k iirc so we would direct the winner to the post office a few streets away.
I had one woman who thought she got 4 numbers and was on for £130, but won £3k on 5 numbers (the amount varies on whether there are trickle down prizes and the number of people who actually won). She was fuming that she had to get a taxi and I couldn't pay her out. Really kicked off about it. Oddly when I offered her the £130 she thought she won she wasn't interested in it...
stowgood@reddit
It's shit that 5 numbers gets you so little. It really is a massive scam. Except all the good causes they give to that's the only reason I occasionally play.
Omalleys@reddit
I got 5 numbers a bit ago and got £1750. It was sickening. Wished my parents shagged later and gave birth to my sister on the 29th instead of the 18th
Competitive_Pen7192@reddit
Yeah one more number and it's life changing whereas 5 is just a holiday or paying off some debt. It isn't even a car...
I know a guy who used to watch it and he got properly excited when his numbers kept coming up, only to be let down and back to preparing for work on Monday.
Competitive_Pen7192@reddit
Damn that's a bummer as isn't 5 plus the bonus when things get really tasty?
I wonder what a shop would do if they found a legit winning ticket?
miked999b@reddit
I once worked with someone who got five numbers. Think they got a couple of grand or so. If they'd got five plus the bonus ball it would've been £178k.
Sea-Still5427@reddit
Also, if you do win the jackpot, how do you prove it? When you contact Savills to view the Georgian mansion near Bath or the castle in Scotland, do you have to show them a letter from the lottery fund? I know my family would assume you were lying or having a psychotic episode.
Dannypan@reddit
Have your finance manager from Coutts prove your worth. The lottery will help you set up accounts with Coutts and they'll assign someone to help manage your finances.
South_Leek_5730@reddit
It's interesting you mention Coutts specifically. That means you know or you know someone that won big. I know because I also know someone who won big. Mine was family and I refused to ask for anything. There is a story behind this I don't want to divulge plus I'm better than that.
Dannypan@reddit
Nah I read it in a news article once lol
South_Leek_5730@reddit
Fair enough lol
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
You often need a credit check and financial reference just to get through the door of somewhere like a Bentley showroom.
ElectricalActivity@reddit
I'm not certain but then, how does anyone else prove it? Most people making these big purchases aren't lottery winners so there must be a way of proving you have access to the cash without the lottery giving you a letter.
Sea-Still5427@reddit
When you buy a house, when the offer's accepted you have to give evidence that you have the funds, so it probably just happens there, at least for the estate agent. It's family I'd have problems convincing, but maybe that's just me.
ElectricalActivity@reddit
Yeah my family wouldn't believe me either. At least not until they saw my new lifestyle.
FireWhiskey5000@reddit
Given there are plenty of people (admittedly a lot in the public eye) who don’t “act” or “dress” old money rich, I’ve assumed that the people selling the Georgian mansions and castles can smell a fake a mile off. That or you have to demonstrate some how you can afford to buy the property to view it.

When I still spent most of my time in the UK, I used to play the same numbers on the euro millions every week. I won occasionally and got the email.
One week, I received 2 emails stating my ticket had won. I was shaking with excitement, as I figured I'd won on the regular numbers, but also must have won the millionaire maker too.
Turned out I'd actually paid for my regular ticket twice that week by accident, and I'd won some tiny amount twice with the same numbers.

If you’re interested, the UK has always had the lottery tax free… But there used to be a gambling tax (for all other betting) prior to 2001. Somewhat ironically, you could gamble with the tax – you could choose to pay it on the stake (and pay it regardless if you win or lose) or you could choose to pay it on the winnings (so pay a much larger amount, but only if you win). It was replaced with an extra tax on bookmakers’ revenues.

It's more likely that quieter draw nights (e.g. Tuesdays right after a jackpot has been scooped on the previou Friday) they have fewer winnings to process as fewer people play and you get the email earlier.
