Blinkers? or NO blinkers?

Are blinkers an overkill?
I was thinking about adding blinkers to my ebike and wanted to know your thoughts?
It is a safety upgrade, but I don't know why I am conflicted on adding them to my bike?
Several times, I could tell vehicles are frustrated, not knowing where I was turning. I know I can do all the arm movements to let drivers know the direction I am turning. Sometimes, if I am turning at a high rate of speed, I cannot signal or take a hand off the handlebar.
Anyway.... blinkers or no blinkers.....any thoughts?
If you are for blinkers do you hardwire or get the re-chargeable ones?
Any suggestions?
Banana58890@reddit
Yes signals are a must for me personally no body ever notices the hand but they do the bright pink blinkers
roppunzel@reddit
I've been hit 3 times On bicycles. And quite a few close calls beyond that I got smart, and I put blinkers on the front and back of my bike, and I have a helmet that has front and back blinkers, no more close calls. But i've got my head on a swivel now.Anyway
2cafn8d@reddit
Still need to do hand signals in my local if you have them.
Forward_Knowledge_86@reddit
Hand signals work better on bikes than blinkers...
Cellist_Acceptable@reddit
My bike comes with front and rear turn signals that are hardwired from factory. I love it. One time though i forgot to turn my left signal off and there was a line of cars in the left lane trying to give me way...
Gold_Factor1266@reddit
I use hand signals.
BurnedNugs@reddit
I use mine because i ride in the dark, leave for work in the early mornings, so they r visible then. During the day its a waste of time and battery cuz no1 can really see them.
rufos_adventure@reddit
you signal before you turn. and if i can hand signal with my motorcycle, you can with your bike.
Itsatinyplanet@reddit
I have blinkers, and never bother to use them.
Exciting-Peak70@reddit
If you ride on the street on all for turn signals. They should be wired in not rechargeable (you don't want them going dead in the middle of your ride). However I'll note most rear turn signals are tough to see from cars. They are general tiny add ons to the rear light. If you get rear blinker make sure they are larger and well separated.
CA_MA@reddit
Yes blinkers.
Hardwired, because batteries run out at the least opportune moments.
I don't have model suggestions - I have an matrix led helmet lumos doesn't make anymore, I'll have to look at replacing eventually.
camperscott@reddit
i use hand signals.. i'm old.
IDK_EBIKEs@reddit (OP)
I was thinking about getting these? These are rated for 24 volt to 48 volt.
IM_OK_AMA@reddit
Just make sure they're mounted far enough apart and far enough to the back of the bike that drivers can actually tell which side is blinking at a glance.
killer-j86@reddit
Hand signals rookie
IM_OK_AMA@reddit
Drivers don't know them. I used to signal right turns and people in their cars would wave back at me.
Felis_igneus726@reddit
You can't assume drivers pay attention or have been taught bike hand signals, though. The other day I had to cut through oncoming traffic to turn left at an intersection. I signaled left with my arm and turned when there was an opening ... and the car approaching clearly didn't notice or didn't understand the signal and probably would have hit me if I had been slower or they had been closer.
Drivers don't necessarily pay attention to turn indicator lights on bikes, either, but if they notice, they should understand what a sudden blinking light on one side means as you approach a turn.
There's also a risk that someone might be coming up not anticipating you sticking your arm out and it ends up getting clipped.
stateroute@reddit
Hand signals are taught, or at least 20 years ago were taught, in drivers’ ed where I am as an alternative for if your blinkers fail. Blinkers can still fail so I assume it’s still taught.
Proper hand signals (at least in my state) are given with the palm facing backward, which to me is an intuitive “stay back”, as in “don’t pass me on this side”. I’m honestly not sure a driver would be any better at interpreting whatever little blinker you might install on a bike unless it’s super obvious like a motorcycle rear light setup.
Felis_igneus726@reddit
In theory, yes. I finally went and got my license a couple years ago and remember hand signals being in the book, although I couldn't say if it came up on the actual test.
In practice, though, even assuming they were taught it, we're deluding ourselves if we think the majority of drivers actually retained this random bit of information they've probably never used or seen another driver using out on the road. More likely they would just go "Oh well, gotta fix that some time" and keep driving as if their lights were fine. I've seen the latter at least a few times; I've never seen a driver using hand signals to turn and I only occasionally see it even from cyclists.
The content and quality of driver's ed also varies wildly depending on state/country and even just from driver to driver in the same area. We had a proper driver's ed class back in high school, but I know people in other states who had no formal instruction whatsoever and were just taught by their parents, who themselves weren't properly educated either.
stateroute@reddit
I get that, but even still, open palm toward those behind you is a pretty universal “don’t” signal. Using your left or right arm to signal a left or right turn on a bike is intuitive to others (in a way the motorist hand signals, at least for right turns and stopping/slowing, are not).
Eli5678@reddit
I was taught hand signals both in drivers ed and in 2nd grade. Was talking with my other friends in their 20s-30s (so they took drivers ed 7-15 years ago), and none of them remembered learning them. I was surprised.
GoCougs2020@reddit
Idk why you’re being downvoted. But I gave you your upvote back.
Obviously steps to get license differ among different area in this country. But in most places knowing hand signal is required and is part of the testing process.
That said, if you got your license 24 years ago. And never had to hand signal for 24 years now, you might or might not remember it, especially if you’re not a cyclist/biker.
GoCougs2020@reddit
Personally speaking, I’ll buy a hi-vis vest and wear a hi-vis gloves before I even install a blinker. But they aren’t mutually exclusive. Get everything!!!! 😆
RED_TECH_KNIGHT@reddit
https://tests.ca/beginner-drivers/13-hand-signals-every-driver-should-know/
Felis_igneus726@reddit
What driver's SHOULD know and what they DO know two different things. Yes of course, these are important signals drivers should know. You won't get any argument there from me. But no, you definitely can't just assume that they've been taught it or remember what they were taught, or that they're paying any attention to bikes. Having a license is no guarantee someone's a skilled, knowledgeable, and attentive driver.
Even many bike riders don't know or use hand signals properly. I've seen people just kind of briefly, vaguely waving in the direction they're turning and SO many who just turn without any kind of signal even on busy roads.
RED_TECH_KNIGHT@reddit
"Oh sorry officer..I didn't KNOW I couldn't do that"
Felis_igneus726@reddit
... Do I need to repeat that I AGREE these are things drivers need to know? I don't know what you're arguing about. It's the simple reality of road biking that you can't trust that any given driver is paying attention and knows the signals. If an officer calls them out on it after the fact, awesome. That's not especially helpful if you're already smeared across the pavement because you assumed they understood you.
RED_TECH_KNIGHT@reddit
Drivers are accountable for not knowing basic road hand signals.
That I agree! I assume every driver is out to kill us.
e1p1@reddit
Even if you're experienced with hand signals, it seems more drivers and bicyclists aren't being taught hand signals. So don't trust that the drivers around you understand them. So perhaps turn signals are becoming appropriate.
I know, I know...don't trust the others anyway.
Its happened a few times where a bike in front of me signaled a right turn, then turned left. One young person doing it almost crashed into me as I passed on the left. We stopped and talked.
They thought they were signaling a left turn, because their arm was making an "L" shape.
Eli5678@reddit
I learned hand signals in 2nd grade. I found it bizarre learning that none of my friends learned them in elementary school nor their drivers ed class when we talked about it last year.
AdeptOaf@reddit
Occasionally I'll signal a left turn and the driver behind me will think I'm telling them to go ahead and pass me.
TrueNova332@reddit
In Massachusetts you wouldn't be able to use them as both hands have to be on the handlebars at all times
ImmodestPolitician@reddit
I always use hand signals.
IDK_EBIKEs@reddit (OP)
Sorry, "indicators" or "turn signals"
Felis_igneus726@reddit
At first my brain went to the blinkers they use on horses LMAO. I was very confused why you'd want them on a bike 🤣🤣
LabioscrotalFolds@reddit
I thought the horse ones were called blinders
Felis_igneus726@reddit
I think people say both. I was definitely taught that they were "blinkers"
AbilityHead599@reddit
I'm a big fan of blinkers
JohnWittieless@reddit
It's so hard to find blinker fluid though.
Revolutionary-Half-3@reddit
Check under BMW parts. Some models have tiny wiper blades and their own special washes fluid.
preshowerpoop@reddit
I am all about using my blinkers when I am driving my car. As everyone should be.
However, my Ebike has them, and I hardly ever need them. I also have forgotten that I used them, and they stay on, and I feel like an idiot who is riding for several blocks with my blinker on without turning because it's a switch. (Left, Right, Center for Off.)
It isn't necessary unless you are in traffic a bunch.
Only-Illustrator-889@reddit
I literally was out riding today and was at this weird 6 way stop. I said out loud to myself, Man I really wish I had blinkers.
I mean its not like you will use them for every single turn but if you have a few turns your worried about, I mean why not it wont hurt anything.
unseenmover@reddit
there not as visible as a hand signal and less likely to be seen..
kinkade@reddit
I disagree personally, particularly since with ebikes we are all riding much faster, I can’t keep my arm out for very long and I have to put my hands back on the handle bars to begin my turn whereas the blinkers keep flashing from when I think about the manoeuvre until after I have finished it. If I driver doesn’t happen to be looking at me in the moment that I can stick my arm out they will have no idea what my intentions are
turbinepilot76@reddit
I use the Unit1 Aura helmet with the built in blinkers. It seems to really help drivers when I’m on streets or at a busy intersection.
kinkade@reddit
That’s a cool helmet and pretty pricey, they also have some really cool lights with blinkers that are also super expensive
jay_howard@reddit
I think they save lives. Not like I always had them, but if you can, yes, please and ty.
DEADB33F@reddit
Do you already have a mirror on the offside?
If not I'd get one of those first. Knowing that a car is approaching so you can pull right to the edge of the road for a few secs while they pass just feels like the courteous thing to do. I know I always appreciate cyclists who do this when I'm in the car or truck.
You should already be using hand signals when turning anyway ....Especially when turning across traffic.
AnilDG@reddit
I second mirrors. These will allow you to ride more safely, blinkers I don’t think do much to help as motorists generally tend to ignore or not care about me when I’m on my bike.
IDK_EBIKEs@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I have mirrors attached to my grips. I do advocate for safe riding, the issue I have is I live in a highly populated city and where I ride there is no bike lanes. Medians are non-existent, sidewalks are illegal to ride on. When I go down hill, I need both hands, when I enter a round-a-bout at 20+ mph / 32 km/h, its hard for "me" to free up a hand. I have to share the road with vehicles. I use hand signals whenever possible.
ur_ynome@reddit
Lumos has a brilliant setup with a helmet and separate lights you can buy that all sync together. Not to mention the helmet saved my life. Excellent customer service and a brilliant product, can't recommend enough and it has made a huge difference in how people treat me on the road.
shiranui--@reddit
I am riding a Chinese ebike in Germany and I got my self some indicators because the bike has to much power that I cannot handle with 1 hand while indicating where to go. Safest option for all of us :D
WindstormMD@reddit
Got a link to them? Looking for a battery driven set
Educational_Ad_3922@reddit
Just get a set for a motorcycle and add a 12v dc to dc converter for your bikes voltage.
Works great for my own bike, plenty of power for LED signals and barely takes any power from the main battery.
shiranui--@reddit
They are connected to my battery with an y splitter so nothing to charge
Educational_Ad_3922@reddit
I'm all for having blinkers. I've been rocking a set meant for a motorcycle on my ebike so they use 12v power but are bright enough to be clearly seen during the day.
Its better to have them and not need them then to need them and not have them.
TrueNova332@reddit
In Massachusetts they're required for all E-bikes as state law here says that both hands must be on the handlebars at all times
squishyliquid@reddit
Are there any e-bikes where the blinkers turn off? Man, I am forgetful. My gf and I are each others reminders.
Neuralcarrot710@reddit
Yes get them. I did my entire bikes wirings, from headlights down to some battery internals
squashed377@reddit
My Aventon has them. The only one that notices is my wife when she is riding behind me... "You didn't even use your turn signal"... lol....
GGLiddy666@reddit
I have them on my Aventon, too. Honestly I forget I even have them.
Felis_igneus726@reddit
Same here. I'm not sure if anyone notices them, but they're pretty low and subtle, so I wouldn't be surprised if not. I use arm signals sometimes to make sure, but it's not always practical and I'm not convinced drivers know what they mean or pay any attention to them either :/
NobleKnightmare@reddit
I'll agree with no one really seeing them, my partner and I have them on our Aventons and pretty much only use them to tell each other when we're turning while riding in the city because cars and such simply don't see them, don't pay attention to them, or they're just to close together that they can't tell which way I'm turning anyhow.
ExtremeProfession113@reddit
Check your local rules and regulations. Bikes don’t use blinkers and they might be prohibited. In some jurisdictions you don’t need to signal when it isn’t practicable (ie safe because you need to use both hands). Drivers are often frustrated because you are on a bike, that’s all they see. Bike = slow doesn’t matter if they are speeding I must pass!!!
Add blinkers you might think you are adding a safety upgrade but it could add risk to your commute by making you think you are safer and that drivers will notice a blinker on a bike and register it.
Use a mirror. Be predictable. Take the lane. Slow down in advance. Signal if practicable and subject to local rules. Assume all drivers are idiots when they see a bike.
bahaboyka@reddit
NO BLINKERS. Just use hand signals. There are lists of acceptable hand signals for cyclists on the 'net. Use them.
DangerousAd1731@reddit
Don't bother with the wireless ones unless you like charging all the time. I gave up on the idea.
If you find a cheap set of something wired and simple let us know. It didn't exist before. Should be the most simplest thing to produce too.
afewcellsmissing@reddit
my wireless I had to charge only once a week for 150 miles of city riding.
IDK_EBIKEs@reddit (OP)
IDK_EBIKEs@reddit (OP)
These are rated for 24 volt to 48 volt, and has the built in relay. They are $87 USD, just debating on if I will use them.
snowy_vix@reddit
I grabbed Lumos ones and I only have to charge them twice a week at most (and that's worth not turning them off during food stops), but yeah, would definitely prefer having ones wired into the battery.
SadisticPawz@reddit
unnecessary, hand signals are more obvious anyway
Affectionate_Lie5601@reddit
hey cycl.bike

godver3@reddit
No blinkers. Use your hand signals.
RedGobboRebel@reddit
Hand signals if it's an eBike. Blinkers if it's an eMoto.
You don't use hand signals during the turn. It's before the turn. While turning you have your hands back on the bars.
I always have on bright color gloves so they can more easily see my hands.
Repulsive_Aside_4122@reddit
I wouldn't bother with it - nobody looks anyway. Old fashioned hand signals for me - just like on my HD chopper, and still you're on your own. Signals on an e-bike might be okay when you're riding with other ebikers in a group, but on the road I don't think they would be big enough or bright enough to be effective.
Low-Drive-768@reddit
You could consider what I bought: a motion sensor alarm with turn signals. I bought it mainly for the alarm, so for me they are a bonus. Not sure if vehicles pay any attention to them, TBH.
WSDCAM is the brand, holds a charge for a long time.
Kooky_Guide1721@reddit
You do the arm signal before you do the turn at a high rate of speed.
babblefish111@reddit
No blinkers.
Most car drivers won't notice them and aren't expecting bikes to have turn signals so might not even realise you are trying to indicate a turn. Same with brake lights.
highinthemountains@reddit
The only time I I might need turn signals is coming down a hill, need both hands for control and making a turn with traffic around. I’ll usually wag my elbow up and down or move my knee in and out to indicate the direction I’m turning. When I was visiting Albuquerque I saw a motorcycle cop do the elbow wag. I don’t know why he wasn’t using his turn signals.
exwhyzeezeewhy@reddit
Can left and right be determined by the average driver? Cars and motorcycles have minimum separation requirements that aren't reasonable on a bike. Animated ones may be more obvious than blinkyy point sources.
Hand signals are much bigger and more visible (though I also question if drivers know what the bent arm right turn signal means), and they're almost always available (reflective gloves help at night)
I've been toying with getting blinkers because I have one part of my commute that's tricky to signal: it's a busy road, downhill, and I need to take a left turn into my neighborhood right as the turn lane opens.
I (hand) signal early, but then need my hands on the brakes to slow (and often stop) for the turn. A blinky reminder to drivers not to get impatient and pass me before I get into the turn lane might be helpful.
They're going to have to wait in the backup at the bottom of the hill anyway.
AdSerious6418@reddit
I have these blinkers on pre order. side lights
DIYuntilDawn@reddit
I have blinkers/turn signals on my e-bike. I have a 12v battery (in addition to the main 48v battery) that I use for additional lights and things, so I can use ones meant for motorcycles. I got the kind that are a strip of LEDs that light up in a sequence. I had to put some on the back and on my mirrors, but the ones on my mirrors are not only so people in front of me can see if I am turning, but also because they don't make any sound when blinking, so I needed to be able to see if/when they are on or not.
IDK_EBIKEs@reddit (OP)
I found some that are made for 48 volts, I am just deciding if I need them or will use them.
DIYuntilDawn@reddit
You could also just get a 48v to 12v (or 5v for USB powered devices) Step Down regulator, and tap off of the 48V battery power to then power 12v DC which means you can then use standard automotive components that are usually easier to find and/or cheaper to buy than ones designed for 48v DC power systems. Although, a lot of electric Golf Carts run on 48V systems so you can also find parts for them that can be used on a lot of ebikes.
SnowDrifter_@reddit
Kind of depends on your local drivers tbh
Folks here seem to not recognize hand signals very well, so I found great benefit from using something more 'familiar'
Meanwhile, an hour north of me, cycling is a lot more common and folks seem to more readily recognize that, so if I were there, I wouldn't.
No straight answer. Everything in context.
My blinkers run off the main battery with a 12v step down. I use LED ones with an integrated flasher so I don't need to fuss with using a flasher relay. And I use a motorcycle handlebar switch, so all the parts are standardized
Substantial_Oil678@reddit
Just don’t turn when there’s a chance of a collision, I try to avoid conflicts with vehicles at all times. Blinkers won’t save me from bad riding habits.
Substantial_Oil678@reddit
Or bad drivers.
Ill_Cheetah_1991@reddit
My problem with blinkers on a bike is that they end up being too close together
Hence a following car might not be able to easily tell what you are signalling - especially in the dark
also - if you use ones that use a seperate battery or are rechargeable then how do you know ehetehr or not they are working
They might be OK when you start your ride
but if the rear ones run out of power while you are rding then you would only klnow when you get off and look at the back of the bike
Which would probably be at the end of the ride
On top of which - driver expect a bike to have arm signals - in spite of a lot of driver insisting that NO CYCLIST has EVER signalled since the World began - or maybe longer
but it is what they expect and their brain acknowledges
so - in my mind - an arm signal registers with the driver behind better than a flashy light
as far as the control thing goes
yup - there is a left turn (UK so safer side) that I go round a lot and it is on a very steep hill downwards
there is no way I can turn there while braking as well - and I have to be braking otherwise I would fall off by going too fast for the bend
I have realised that it is just as effective to slow down more than necessary before the turn
then signal while allowing the bike to speed up a bit
then put my arm down and turn at the last second
works fine - yo just have to look forward a bit more than usual to realise and do it properly
CrashTestPhoto@reddit
You should never be turning at such a high rate of speed that you can't take a hand off the handlebars to make a Signal.
Save your money and just slow down and make an arm and hand signal when making a turn
bensonr2@reddit
I just don't see how most bicycle sized bicycles can benefit from indicators. Almost anything is going to be too small to be readily seen by cars.
Now I imagine a lot of people will say something is better then nothing. But my feeling is having them may give riders a false sense and discourage them from using hand signals which are much more visible in most situations.
_okbrb@reddit
Blinkers are good for the reasons you hope but so is the ancient art of arm signaling. Definitely if you’re in a lane, you need some way of telegraphing your moves to drivers
(A note to dark side users: telegraphing fake moves to drivers can also be useful in situations like 4 way stops)
Bwilderedwanderer@reddit
If you have a set up where the lights are clearly distinguished left and right (spaced several inches apart) than I think it's good otherwise it is hard to tell that they are turn signals.
PinkRiots@reddit
I think anything that uses the road should have blinkers, and should be used. Too many accidents are caused by people not signaling their intent while driving. Especially if you're unable to signal while turning, you should have blinkers.
jwpi31415@reddit
Just don't forget to top off the fluid reservoir every 500 miles or so ;)
I'd suggest any electronic turn signals as a supplement to pointing in the direction you intend to change to, with the head turn over shoulder to confirm acknowledge when taking the lane is involved.
funcentric@reddit
It depends on how motorists act in the area where you live. Some don't bother looking and even if they see it, dont' really care for bikes anyway. So it's completely useless particularly in the daytime where they are not as visible. I use them not as turning indicators, but just as flashing lights. I have a mode where they both flash at the same time. At night time, from far away, all motorists see is a light w/o a sense of the orientation of whether it's left or right. So again, it doesn't really help but at least it's a blinking light that gets their attention. But I have other lights for that. Long way of saying, they don't work well as indicators.
mafkJROC@reddit
If you’re going too fast to signal with your arm then you’re going too fast and you’re not a safe driver and if you get hit - you will be at fault. And I will not feel bad for you.
mafkJROC@reddit
Oh ya - and I hope you have to pay for the damage to the vehicle you caused a collision with.
ChefArtorias@reddit
They add safety and provide peace of mind. These are entirely positive things.
bornslyasafox@reddit
I have 4 Lumos Firefly lights that I initially bought to be used as my turn indicators. They are super cool. They sync to my Lumos helmet, my phone, and the optional bike handle turn buttons. Very nice white LEDs, orange blinkers, and red brake lights all in one little puck. They are a little limited since they are all battery powered. This means that I have to take each one off my bike to charge them.
One thing that I found is that even when I have them on my bike, I don't really use them as much as I thought I would. Rarely do I use the Right side turn signal. It is nice to have the Left indicator though if I have to make a turn at a stop light/in traffic.
I haven't slapped them on this season either since I haven't been doing much night rides.
OP check them out, last I saw they made a mini version of the lights that look pretty sleek
LessthanaPerson@reddit
Part of why I got the bike I have currently is because it has turn signals. They work well and I’m happy with them.
MaxTrixLe@reddit
I wish I had some, I hate when cars wait politely for me to pass the intersection, only for me to turn. I always feel like an asshat for making them wait after nothing
DUNGAROO@reddit
If you install blinkers you have to worry about keeping the blinker fluid topped off. That’s why I go without.
Hot_Block_9675@reddit
We don't need no steenking turn signals... There ARE analogue answers to this issue, duh.
...and if you can't take one hand off the bars for a second or two you shouldn't be riding, PERIOD.
stormdelta@reddit
Nothing is truly overkill on a bike when it comes to safety unless it doesn't add anything, but I've found for the most part I'm good with just signaling with my hands.
I've thought about it, but there's not an easy way to do so without a ton of custom work and I'd need it to plug into the bike's electrical system because no way am I adding more separate things that need charging.
Carbsv2@reddit
I'm in the process of building a set myself. I don't care for the idea of wireless bluetooth blinkers ("If it can be wired it should be wired" is something I try to live by)
I bought a set of motorcycle signals, a 12v battery pack, an LED relay, and a rocker switch with a tube mount.
Last piece should arrive today.
I'm not hardwiring to my main battery as I don't really want to build a 48 to 12v adapter. The 12v battery pack should be enough.
AirlessDragon@reddit
Mine are very popular on group rides. I'm not sure how well drivers can see them light up during the day so I still use hand signals as well just in case. Blinkers are awesome at night!
Kozmic-Stardust@reddit
My velotric discover 2 has rear amber turn signals. I wish I could tap the wire harness and use the 6v signal to drive a 12v relay so I could have side and front indicators. To do that would void the warranty though.
DoubleOwl7777@reddit
i think it depends. if its a faster one yes. if not, like a class 1, no.
ChrisTrotterCO@reddit
I like blinkers but they have to be done right or they become pointless and can make riders less cautious in relying on motorists to see the blinker.
External_Dimension18@reddit
I ride on the road with traffic sometimes and went with the turn signals. Just to keep me a bit more protected.
CancelZestyclose258@reddit
I have wireless blinkers and i like them.
shaakunthala@reddit
I think it makes sense to have aftermarket blinkers if,
You as an ebiker share the road with cars and heavy vehicles, and,
Most importantly if you ride your bike at higher speeds. At higher speeds you don't have much time to use hand signals and then get both hands on the handlebar and countersteer. Also, you need to be able to apply emergency brakes while taking a corner.
So, depends on how you use the bike and your local road regulations.
japakapalapa@reddit
My helmet (Unit1 Aura) had turn signals but I do not have the remote control to enable them. For some reason I'm not sure if they're an overkill of sorts.
KatlynJoi@reddit
I'm new to getting back on a bike after at least 15 years. I'm not confident enough yet to take my hand off the handlebars to signal turns so I'm glad for my blinkers & wish there were some on the front too.
hroaks@reddit
You don't need turn signals. You need to slow down
Rattlingplates@reddit
Stupid imo. They’re generally always on in the wrong way. Just throw up a hand signal.
Evildude42@reddit
If drivers can’t figure out what you’re doing then maybe improve your riding style. The only thing drivers and bicycle riders have is the possible intention of the other person and what they’re going to do. If you approach an intersection and you slow down, you’re probably either going to stop or make a turn. But if you just blow through lights and zigzag through people, then no one knows what you’re doing.
Bubbly-Pirate-3311@reddit
My old ebike didn't come with them and I was always fine because I rode in the bike lane, but my new one is fast enough to ride in the road, and it came with blinkers, so I use them as a courtesy. It depends where you ride and how fast your bike js
dr2chase@reddit
I think blinkers are overkill, but that assumes hand signals and drivers paying attention. What I use is daytime running lights, that is, the lights are just on all the time, I think it helps with being noticed in general (not just when turning).
Also, maybe if there is traffic, don't also turn at a high rate of speed (and perhaps work on your bike handling but that is a long-term project).
