Boats sailing. There is some amount of wind and some amount of waves. Maybe it’s scary, maybe it’s not, I dunno, just watch the boats.

As a North Atlantic coastal and offshore racer… this is fascinating to me. I have raced on a bunch of boats, i have pooped doing 25+ knots into carbon fiber toilet bowl. I own a sport boat with a hull burnished to a mirror. Sadly never ever have I gotten a boat on plane this majestically on water flat enough to float a pistachio shell…

There is indeed some amount of wind and waves!

Legit confused about the weight distribution. My instinct is to think that the weight should be more balanced, and that a level boat would plane better and have less displacement/drag. This boat, seemingly stern heavy has hull going deeper and has more drag. Am I wrong? Do I have it backwards? Thanks.

This is normal weight distribution for planing conditions in sport boats. Melges 24. Melges 32. VX One. The question I guess then becomes "ok, why then?" I have Frank Bethwaite's book here on my desk and even looking at it, I'm not sure it offers a perfect explanation, or maybe I just don't understand the physics of it entirely. Let me quote the book. Thank you for the great response. I guess I am basing my thought on my experience with power boats. The bow is way high when you are accelerating and when they get to plane, the bow generally comes down. This boat just gives me the feel of being in the phase just before the bow settles into the plane. Anyway, planing a sail boat seems crazy and great fun.

So, often with the asymmetrical up, you see the jib doused. Why is it still deployed here and what are the factors that go into the decision?

In planing conditions the boat sails faster with the jib out. We fork it when the wind is light enough to sail in displacement mode.

IFL the J/70. It's the platonic ideal of a sailboat.

Pfft! Amateurs! That's not a planing hull, you're not supposed to plane those boats!  Rookie mistake! 🧐
