I would look into upway.com and keep an eye out for a full suspension mid drive. Specialized, canyon, cannondale, and Santa Cruiz all make incredible bikes that can be found on upway in your budget.

If your budget was double, I'd say look into the Bonnell 775 MX. Lol, that's a dream in and of itself, though. lol it's a very illegal mid drive full suspension mountain bike with a throttle. Illegal because its insanely powerful!

Surron make some great bikes, if you want a really great opinion maybe ask r/hyperebikes since they deal with higher power stuff rather than here is mostly slow stuff. I’d wish I could give you more info but I don’t know prebuilt bikes that well, I mostly deal with custom builds.

You mean, this sub is mostly “actual e-bikes that are legal to ride, not e-motos” stuff.

There’s nothing wrong with a Surron, but they aren’t e-bikes. They are e-motos that require a license and registration to legally ride on the street, and are never legal to ride in designated bike lanes or bike paths.

Slow and fast are relative. The legal assisted speed limit for actual legal e-bikes is 28mph, which is slower than a Surron e-moto yes, but faster than even elite Tour de France athletes can go on a normal bike.

The point is that e-motos cannot fulfill the same role as an actual e-bike due to the legal restrictions. Not to mention you’re just being a dick who is endangering others if you take a 120lb Surron going 40+mph on the same trail/path where people are walking at 3mph or going 15mph on their normal bikes.

I never said they were, just that there’s valid reasons for why actual e-bikes are legally limited to a top speed that you’d consider “slow” and should not be ridden on designed bike paths or mixed-use trails.

If OP’s cousin is just going to use it for fire roads and the motocross park (not designated MTB parks, Surrons are illegal there), then sure they should get a Surron. But if they want to ride it around the city in bike lanes/paths, or want to ride actual mountain bike trails, they should get a real e-bike and not an e-moto.

Nobody gets arrested for illegally riding a Surron, that’s a civil violation like speeding not a criminal one. They get their bikes confiscated and points added to their driver’s license.

I don't think you will get anything particular powerful from Specialized, Trek, or Giant at that price point. The Aventon Ramblas comes in just under your budget, still has a mid-drive and some very nice components. It has a strong 100Nm of torque and will shame many more expensive eMTBs in hill climbing capability. But it is only class 1 and it is a hardtail.
