80K in Sallie Mae loans

30 days since I haven't paid Sallie Mae. Is it normal for them to just leave automated voicemails. They've been calling once daily with a specific number for like 2 weeks straight. I blocked it. Then now they're calling once daily with a different number. I just blocked that one as well. I usually never answer the phone to people unless I know them. And let them just leave a voicemail. They only sent two letters so far which were of course unpaid balance. I will not answer my phone or respond to any letter unless it's a summons to court or settlement that is applealing. Is this normally how it goes for people that have stopped paying on their student loans?

they will start to call everyone you know…💔 just answer tell them you are unable to pay at this time.

I don’t mind if they call anyone else I already warned everyone that I know just to hang up or say wrong number. And honestly I already told them multiple times I can’t pay. They didn’t care so I’m going cold turkey not answering any calls or letters unless it’s a summons to court.

FWIW/if it matters to you, when I was in default they left detailed messages with my employer, former employers, and people I would have never have expected them to call. It was crazy.
You can find copy paste letters online to send to them that explicitly say they can only contact you (and only you) in writing about any supposed debt claims against you and they can’t call you or anyone else about it.
There can be legal consequences for them if they continue to call after such a letter is sent.

I honestly don’t care who they call lol most jobs can’t give out personal information to anyone that calls about you so I’m 99.9% sure they’ll say they cannot give them any details regarding my employment so I’m not worried. And if they do you can sue the employer for hipaa violations.
TheresaSweet@reddit
It’s more about how (with some employers) it will damage your reputation to hear that you defaulted on debt. I’m not sure what you mean about HIPPA though (used to work in hospitals).

Again I honestly don’t care. Lol my reputation is good whether or not I default or not. You could always tell a white lie if you’re so worried about your reputation. “Oh I was in a deferment program but they took me off. I’m working on getting it out back on” simple as that. Lol I work at a hospital and hospitals do not provide information about you at all whatsoever if they do that will be going against hipaa and I will 100% take legal action.

Not sure why you have such a hostile tone. Other people read these threads and they might actually care about the impact of debt collector calling everyone they know.
I’m aware of debt collection laws and how they work, thanks. And while it would be illegal for them to mention anything about it your debt, that has nothing to do with HIPPA.
Have a great day lol

Imagine thinking it’s a violation of hipaa for a debt collector to call your employer and then doubling down on being a pr!ck when someone mentions what happened to them when they defaulted… on a sub about defaulters. 😂

Hostile tone? You’re reading a comment not talking to me personally on the phone. Get out of your feelings lol so damn sensitive these days it’s ridiculous. Again if a COMPANY gives someone personal information about their employee they are subjected to a lawsuit. Again I work at a hospital!!! That’s why I said hipaa. It’s spelled hipaa not hippa. If the company provides my information to anyone else besides me they are subjected to again a lawsuit. Idc what HR does to anyone besides me. If they do that to me and me only I will take legal action. Bottom line is releasing information that they have no business giving out. Period so they go hand in hand! Thanks!!

Not a good idea. Answering them and saying that may reset the SOL (due to the implication of acknowledging the debt as your own). Just ignore them, and advise your family members to do the same. Unless you get served court papers (which whether or not you do is hit or miss), consider them all talk.
RepulsiveSea2174@reddit (OP)
Yup! That’s exactly what I’m doing staying completely silent unless I get a summons to court.

It is normal process. Later they will sell the debt to a collection agency and new number will appear on your phone along with new letters. It's standard protocol.

Thank you!

Same here I default at the end of this month.. haven’t paid since Feb
RepulsiveSea2174@reddit (OP)
Have they sent you to collections? What has happened so far to you?
shuttheduckup123@reddit
No collections yet. Just get lots of phone calls both automated and from a live person. They’ve also called family members looking for me. I’ve actually never answered a call. My co-signer is a wealthy estranged relative. I’ve made my “judgement proof” I have no assets. Everything is in my husbands name and loans were taken out previous to our marriage
RepulsiveSea2174@reddit (OP)
That’s good! I got my co signer off before I stopped paying so that was a plus! And same I have zero assets as well and I’m not married.
