Before the mcu movies came out he was widely recognized but nowhere near as big of a deal as he is today. I grew up seeing him in video games and cartoons and stuff but he was rarely the main focus. When the mcu started he skyrocketed to everyone's favorite. Those movies handled him really well, though, treated the character best I've ever seen him.
A red, white, and blue who is strong but not an omnipotent godlng who stands for truth, justice, and the American way? Of course we like him, he is a paragon.
He’s the good kind of corny. A genuinely nice person who wants to help people, believes in what the country says it stands for, and recognizes that while it doesn’t always live up to its own hype, that just means we need to do better.
Exactly. He’s a Boy Scout, in the best possible sense. (Disclaimer: I’m basing this mostly off of comics but I think the movies mirrored the comics pretty closely. I’m also not a big fan of superhero comics, but went on a tear several years ago to immerse myself in the genre.)
Cap is a model of decency. He’s absolutely willing to break the rules or even go against the law of the land when his moral compass dictates. (See: Civil War arc, for example.) He’s a model for what patriotism ought to look like; but more than that, he’s kind, modest, thoughtful, self-sacrificing, earnest, and gentle. He’s basically a mensch.
I'm paraphrasing something from an early episode of the podcast [Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men](https://www.xplainthexmen.com/), but they were talking about the MCU and they said something like "one of the biggest successes about the MCU is that it made Captain America cool, because he should be cool" and went onto say something like, "Captain America works as a superhero because he doesn't represent what America is, but rather what America strives to be, which incidentally is why many Captain America stories have him going up against the establishment."
I grew up watching the X-Men cartoons and reading X-Men comics. I always had the idea that comic book Captain America was a bland boyscout (as someone who didn't keep up with the Avengers), but the MCU changed my mind on him. The Jay and Miles description of how the MCU represents/represented him was bang-on for me for why he works as a character and a super hero. He's not a government yes-man. He humbly fights for freedom and equality and decency and all that good stuff. (As the other person said) Yeah, he may be corny, but he's the good kind of corny.
My hot take is that all superhero movies have banal, simplistic storylines that appeal to immature (often mentally-underdeveloped) people. They are children's stories marketed for adults.
Steve Rogers' Captain America (as a comics fan) is the best. He straight up stopped being Captain America at least two times (once out of disillusionment, once because he wouldn't accept orders), he's pretty much universally respected as a superhero (something that's surprisingly hard in the Marvel Universe).
People who don't read comics sometimes assume the original's just a sort of 'everything the US does is fine, citizen!' mascot, and they're wrong. (Then, some will form abstract theories as to how they were actually right, but that's just a risk of interacting with people like that.)
This statement is correct. Second this.
I also like Anthony Mackie's Captain America. Really enjoyed that speech he gave highlighting the strife of a black dude being in cap's shoes in the present day.
I'd stand with either.
You mean captain pureto Rico
He not even in American flag pattern
And he’s probably be racist In real life and misogynistic because of the time he was born in
Cap has a code he lives by. It doesn't mean unswerving loyalty to the government, but to the American ideal enshrined in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
at least the mcu one is one of the best examples of what it means to be an american, you fight for freedom even if that means its against America at the time.
K. I never read the comic books, I haven't seen the movies. Thanks for arrogantly explaining a fictional character in a very condescending way. But a super hero branded after America always seemed lame af to me.
You can hate on me for not liking something you like, you can hate on me for shitting on a cartoon character, you can even hate on me for not knowing what I'm talking about, but Captain America has still always looked like a pussy to me.
I mean, the entire theater cheered for him when he picked up Thors hammer. He and Iron Man were/still are very popular characters in the American culture.
Do we mean the character in general or the MCU portrayal the world is familiar with? I guess they’re sort of both corny propaganda. As a comic book kid in the 90’s I pretty much never thought about the Avengers. X-Men, Spiderman, Hulk, Silver Surfer, Venom.
When I was a kid and reading the comics I thought he was kind of corny and I was much more into the darker characters.
But I thought they did a good job with movie cap, kind of a cool throwback to a time when a guy in a flag suit meant punching nazis and not whatever it would mean now.
As a kid/teenager he seems kind of corny. As I got older(25) he’s pretty cool. He’s the definition of a true hero. Although my favorite is Spider-Man all day every day
Steve Rogers is just a cool character all around. The america-centric crap is pretty cringey, but I think steve rogers has shown he cares about everyone on the planet, not just americans.
While Spiderman is my favorite superhero, and arguably more culturally representative of America; Captain America is our hero and god bless him for protecting our freedom from commies, Nazis and Aliens.
Was a big Marvel comics fan in the 90s and always disliked him. It wasn't until First Avenger came out that I really "got" the character. I always assumed he was patriotic in the same way assholes wearing stars and stripes shorts screaming about 'Murica are "patriotic", but the MCU version brought me around on understanding that the character is about what the US *should* stand up for.
I haven’t read any of the comic books since the ‘90s, but Captain America has integrity. Some people might find him boring. Fine.
He doesn’t have any deep psychological problems. He’s vanilla. But he’s a dang good role model. I dressed up like him one time for Halloween when I was in elementary school. I was Iron Man the next year.
I think Cap is a lot more compelling than Tony Stark. If everyone was a Captain America we’d have a much better world.
I liked Cap a lot more after reading Civil War and seeing him stand up for what he believed was right instead of working for the US Government that he thought was in the wrong.
I was always kind of indifferent toward Captain America, but he’s definitely one of the characters who benefitted most from the MCU. Chris Evans was perfect as Steve Rogers.
The original movie was boring. Winter Soldier was actually pretty good. Like, a decent spy thriller and one of the good Marvel Movies.
I've never read a comic book, and am completely burnt out superhero movies.
Also Chris Evans seems like a prick.
I mean he punches Nazis so he can’t be bad, I find him over the top in flag type decals though but atleast it’s more tasteful than a rednecks full America clothes kind of stuff you might see
