Anyone else noticing something off with UNFI + the grocery labor strikes this week?

Seems UNFI’s issues are as yet unresolved. Our truck (FM) didn’t show up and calling them resulted in different answers. Bottom line: Truck never showed and we have no idea when it’s gonna be here.

I’m a long haul trucker and it has been a while since I’ve gotten a UNFI load. I’ll ask my dispatcher about it tomorrow.

My wife works for Whole Foods. The one she works at will still be getting food, but they’re basing order off of top selling items, not what they’re out of. She said UNFI is being secretive as to why they’re having issues, making us think it may be related to a hack. I think she said a similar thing happened to another distribution company recently.
She’s heard that this could either be for a week, but also heard that there’s no date on when the system will be back up again, so I’m not sure how long it’ll last.

There was a post relatively recently from a person in.. I think Scotland? Who posted that his grocery store was empty due to the fact that their ordering software had been hacked.
If this IS a hack for UNFI, I wonder if it's related. Disrupting the food supply is definitely a way to fuck things up.

It's starting to hit the news.

Yeah, interrupting food is a really good way for state actors to harm a populace. Crazy.

I work for WFs can confirm this. Our dairy case is looking terrible. There's going to be many unhappy/unprepared people.

Does your store have a plan? Someone upthread is saying their store is receiving their top selling items rather than what they're out of. It will be interesting to watch how different stores manage continuity of sales. If you are able to, your experience on this in particular would be good intel for the board.
funsized43@reddit
Yes, our store has the same plan. Just so people understand UNFI not only provides us with dry goods, they also supply departments like prepared foods and bakery with bulk ingredients and components for our recipes. And basically they are one of the only games in town----so to speak when it comes to grocery distribution. It's basically a Monopoly.

I was in our small Whole Foods market this afternoon. The dairy is at the back of the store, visible from the front as you come through one of the entrances. I was shocked by how empty it looked!!
I guess I’ll be going back tomorrow to pick up a few more things that I need for next weekend, before they run out.

Union sabotage during labor disputes is as old as the labor dispute itself.
pencilforawingbone@reddit
i'm not sure these events come out of a common cause other than a food system built on exploiting labor and nature for every last cent but if they do coincide it could take us a few meals closer to anarchy.

Wow! This is a very useful post, both now, and as a plannable future scenario. Thank you!

UNFI (United Natural Foods, Inc.) primarily distributes to a wide range of customers, including natural product superstores, independent retailers, conventional supermarket chains, e-commerce retailers, and foodservice customers throughout North America. Specifically, UNFI supplies approximately 30,000 locations, including well-known retailers like Whole Foods Market, Kroger, Target, Costco, Walmart, Sprouts Farmers Market, and Safeway.
In that subreddit someone mentioned UNFI was going to be down for the whole week?
So could be some shortages 🤔
eatmeat@reddit (OP)
Yes and combine the UNFI outage with a Kroger/Albertsons strike and you are looking at 30-40% of the US grocery supply being disrupted this week
bs2k2_point_0@reddit
C&S is the owner of Albertsons and Kroger. They bought them to basically keep them afloat as without these major chains, they would’ve taken a huge hit. C&S is the largest wholesale grocer in the US.
Having both UNFI down and C&S unable to deliver to 2 major chains is going to hurt, a lot.

United Natural Foods has filed an 8-K with the SEC for (not named) ransomware incident starting 4 days ago.
