What if a Reddit alternative not only had upvote and downvote?

I've always said that there should be two pairs of up/downvotes: one that is easily accessible and functions as they do now, a button to easily show your support/agreement or the reverse. Then one that is harder to access and functions as the purported intention: a distributed moderation tool. This one should also require regular participation in a community, you have to earn it.

Makes sense

I'd hate it.
Tales_From_The_Hole@reddit
Yeah, this is a horrendous suggestion

Why
LondonPilot@reddit
90% of votes would either be “Very good” (equivalent of upvote) or “Very bad” (equivalent of downvote).
Change that to 98% in political forums.
Unfortunately I don’t think this would be used in a way that would benefit anyone.

But you could weight the vote of a user by his history.
So a user who often votes in the middle will have more weight when he uses the "very" option than someone who always uses the "very" optiob

too much

There are different axes, and reddit conflates them.
People downvote what they don’t want to hear.
On r/screwdrivers : “is this a good tool for hammering nails?” -> “no, use a hammer instead” [heavily downvoted for disrespecting screwdrivers]
Maybe we can separate “I don’t like” from “is wrong” (downvoter must explain and cite sources)
Also upvote: “is funny” vs “actually answers the fucking question”

Explore more slashdot systems IMO: they had up and downvotes but they were
busymom0@reddit
Can you explain the Categorized more? How does it correspond to the votes?
HeartyBeast@reddit
It also has a really interesting metamoderation system
www1z4rd@reddit
What was metamoderation system?
HeartyBeast@reddit
So with slashdot, if you are a subscriber you are randomly(ish) selected to moderate. You are then shown some random comments and asked to moderate them up or down.
Meta moderation is similar etc you are randomly shown a small number of moderation decisions and have to say whether they are correct or not

I would propose something different, 2 choices: i agree/ i disagree
