Just got my ebike, went to the mall for the first time, too paranoid, didnt last 5 minutes
Posted by JJsNotOkay@reddit | ebikes | View on Reddit | 513 comments
So yeah, title, coming to the mall for the first time, but they have the shittiest racks here, foot traffic is good though
4 locks (chain lock, d lock, cable lock, wheel lock) movement alarm, and an airtag, but couldnt leave it alone for 5 minutes, paranoia got me. Also airtag keeps showing me its randomly across the street so I panicked a little lol.
Im starting to think no amount of locks are going to make me feel like its safe and maybe I should either not loose sight of it ever or leave it at home when I know I wont be able to achieve that
Large-Ad5239@reddit
The only locker i use .
i could go more than 1 hour if its not parked on sun place .

My dog would just take the ride, live in the new home, leave if he didn't like it, maybe come back, maybe travel to the South of France. He was fiercely independent and resourceful

It's a legitimate concern to have, but some of your paranoia about leaving the bike will naturally burn off with time.
I would definitely reconsider your current locking location/setup, though. As others have pointed out, you have 4 locks but only 1 of them is actually securing the bike to anything--a thief with a truck would cut the flimsy rack, slip out your chain lock, and take the whole thing to a secure location to work on. Find something thicker/more solid to lock to, and make sure both your d-lock and chain are securing your bike frame (the chain can also thread through a wheel, and the cable can take care of the other).
For additional peace of mind, consider slapping some stickers on it. This might not appeal to you while your bike is shiny and new, but once it’s a little more scuffed up and lived-in, stickers are a cheap way to make your bike instantly less appealing to a potential reseller. They either limit the bike’s resell appeal or give a thief the annoying chore of scraping them off. They also make your bike more immediately identifiable in the short term. Since your bike is from a premium name brand, bonus points for covering up the logos and branding; a stickered-up no-name bike will attract less unwanted attention than a Cannondale.
You can also think about taking your battery with you whenever possible. Bring along a bag that can accommodate it and just take it with you when the bike is parked. Yes, it’s annoying to have to lug this heavy thing around, and in some situations it won’t be doable, but the battery is one of the most expensive components on the bike, and few things will more negatively affect a bike’s resale value than missing one. See if Cannondale sells terminal covers (or maybe find some on Etsy or something) to protect your bike's components from weather while the battery is out.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
thank you!! will definitely take all of these advices to heart, its my first time so Im still learning, knowing how easy it can be to take something I worked so hard to get can be nerve wrecking
treestump444@reddit
For the front wheel and seatpost you can buy locking skewers that only unlock with a specific key and mean that you don't need to faff about locking up your wheel every time you park. Incredibly worth it imo and it means that you can instead use 2 locks (or one strong one) on the frame instead for much more security
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
already got those! my solution was treating this bike like a sports car, its going out when my intended activity is riding, for commutes and transportation I got a cheap folding bike thats beat up a bit and that i dont mind locking anywhere
Ok_Morning947@reddit
I totally get you, I’ve only ever locked up my bike once in a very high traffic/visibility area (literally outside windows to the library), I scooted around the library for 5 minutes also and left. Even though rationally I knew a thief would be pretty brazen to steal it in full sight of people.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
its insane, I used to have a car and I didnt worry about it as much even if it was 3 times the cost because its harder to steal and the cops take xar theft more seriously, people dont get how nerve inducing it is
Few-Presentation2488@reddit
Yep, lose the bike. keep the battery. Then sell battery for 20% of its worth. Maybe better a good lock and insurance. I'm no longer obsessed about theft. And I really don't want a bike back after some dirt bag had possession.
kurisu7885@reddit
If you use reflective stickers I imagine those can add a bit to riding safety too. I'm shopping for an Etrike and one thing I plan to do is put some reflective hazard stripes on the rear fenders.
emeraldaurora567@reddit
Great tips all around, especially the reminder that paranoia fades with time.
Ok-Mix-2891@reddit
Also wanted to add to lock your seat on. Where I live, seats are stolen often if the tires are locked on. You can run the wire one through the bars on the bottom of the seat. Lots of reflective stickers are available. I have a lot on my bike.

Buying bicycle insurance is a good way.
Whatatay@reddit
I don't even have a lock for my Ebike. I would love to ride to places and go do something, even just stop for fast food, but have seen videos on how fast a thief can steal your bike, even "defeating" the lock by cutting the rack it is attached to.
NsBikeMike@reddit
If only the infrastructure was there for bike lockers, I get the same paranoia and it ruins the purpose of using the bike if you can't leave it safe and go about your day.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
definitely, all I've been using it for lately is going to places where I know I can be outside with it or can keep a close eye, like cafes, parks, restaurants with sidewalk tables, some smaller supermarkets where I can walk the bike in and keep an eye on it while a do groceries. Everything else I rather walk and leave it safe at home.
NsBikeMike@reddit
I know people have mentioned insurance but that only covers cost in the long run, doesn't solve the bike being safe, where I live theft isn't massively high but it happens and our ebikes are even more of a target, makes thieves more determined if anything.
idsnowghost@reddit
I'd find a new place to lock it up where you can place a lock through the bike's triangle. What is the U lock on the front tire even doing?
Also the handlebar attachments are probably the easiest target to get messed with.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
gotta learn how to remove those, also its my first time locking and my bike is pretty huge, gonna practice a little more before going out again
dyxoncox@reddit
Please, please, please, go look up some videos on how to lock up a bike for maximum security.
My advice, however, if you want to take it:
The largest lock should go around a frame tube, and around a pole or something. This should ideally be the seat tube between the top tube and the down tube, or the top tube, between the head tube and the seat tube.
Then, take the cable, and loop it around the front wheel (. Take one end, and pass it through the eyelet at the other end of the cable. You'll have one free end, and one that tightens down on your rim/tire when you pull it. Weave the free end through the frame from the front to back.
Then, take the thinner lock you have, and if you can, put the shakle (the u part), around the rim on your rear wheel, and one of your frame tubes (the seat tube, or a chain stay/seat stay. Then, take the free end of the cable, and put the shackle through the eyelet on the free end. Then lock that lock.
That locking strategy is about as thorough as you can get, and will deter the most thieves. Do not lock around, or through, your fork, as your front wheel can nearly always be removed.
Hope that helps bring you some peace of mind!
jjmoreta@reddit
Are there any photos or videos showing this method?
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
its a bit hard to follow since im new with bikes overall, but I'll screenshot this and have it useful
LordEmrich@reddit
The way you have it locked is fine, by the way. You want to lock the wheels so they can't just roll off with the bike. Locking the frame to something (assuming you don't lock either wheel) means they can just cut whatever it's locked to and roll off with a free bike.
Also, get some trackers. I have a Tile Pro and a Pebblebee tracker on all my bikes. I also have a LandSeaAir GPS tracker on one bike. It requires a yearly subscription but provides satellite updates so you don't have to hope someone's mobile phone is nearby like with the trackers (Airtag, Tile, Pebblebee and so on). I'll be switching to Tracki Pro once this current LandSeaAir sub ends cause it's a little cheaper and seems to have better reviews.
Oh and get a headlight and taillight, please. You should have a flashing light on at all times, day or night.
mister_magic@reddit
Yeah my insurance would not cover a bike locked up like this. Gold rated kryptonite and direct on the frame. Not a cable around the tyres.
ThrifToWin@reddit
Bigger lock is on the back.
Double-Detective3782@reddit
Looks like it locks the wheel to a cable looped through the frame, securing the front wheel.
QuietPurchase@reddit
This sounds mostly psychological and outside of the scope of this sub.
BygoneNeutrino@reddit
He's not paranoid. If I developed a cocaine habit, the first thing I would invest in would be a battery powered saw. The police don't investigate bike theft where I'm at and it is signifirsafer to steal and sell a bike than it is to shoplift at Walmart.
...what we need is government policies to incentivize people to ride ebikes. Subsidized insurance, a system to prevent and investigate theft, safe places to lock them. Where I live it is not appropriate to leave a bike outdoors for an extended period of time. I only use my bike to go to places where I'm in and out in 15 minutes.
QuietPurchase@reddit
If you're using four different kinds of locks, an airtag, and a movement alarm, you're paranoid.
Also he literally says "paranoia got me." I think he's paranoid.
BygoneNeutrino@reddit
An airtag isn't particularly useful. Assuming it actually works, it's unlikely a judge would issue a warrant unless there is compelling video evidence of the theft that positively IDs the subject
The movement alarm isn't particularly useful. Bystanders have a tendency to do nothing when someone else is in trouble. They just watch dumbly and maybe call the police.
There are a handful of $200+ locks that can deter theft, but it's still easy to cut around it. The bike rack in the picture can be cut in a few seconds. Even if he had ten normal locks, the thief could be in and out in under two minutes
DucMike@reddit
Have to agree with the comment regarding bystanders. Was doing some scrolling through YouTube and ran across a video showing a guy with an angle grinder going at a D-lock on a bike somewhere in England. Broad daylight and people were literally walking by with one guy just filming it. His buddies were on a scooter and another E bike. People really suck.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
well I mean; everyone here goes through it I think, so thought it applied, my bad
picklewig47b@reddit
Those should even be considered things to lock your bike to, just hold them upright, and not even do that well. A Cannondale midrive with a Bosch motor ? You are not paranoid.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
it was not cheap I would die if it got stolen
JG-at-Prime@reddit
Nope. You are in the correct place and are right to be concerned about your investment.
Just ignore Mr. Haha 🤡 up there. 👆
Those bike racks are legit terrible and you are right to be concerned about them. In many cases it’s easier for the thieves to just cut the rack and toss the bike in a truck to deal with the locks later.
Next time find a tree or post or something else to lock your bike to. I personally like lights or lighted poles to lock to. Few bike thieves are going to risk a 240v shock while they try to grind through a streetlight.
Imaginary-Client391@reddit

Tricky_Condition_279@reddit
The main online e-bike insurance has a deductible. I know because I bought it even though I don’t leave my bike outside. Certainly worth it. But I’d be curious to know of insurance without a deductible.
InvestigatorSenior@reddit
this must be some regional thing. Mine covers 100% from the first EUR. Theft, civil liability, medical bills, no difference.
The only catch is 3-6 months you have to wait for paperwork from the Police stating that they give up. It's funny since bike theft is very low priority and in most cases they don't even try to do anything.
Other than that you get full invoice price in the first 3 years after purchase, then standard amortization scheme is used, exactly like with taxes.
tempusfugee@reddit
Mind sharing who you use? I’m looking for insurance for my bike in Portugal.
Lar1ssaa@reddit
Out of curiosity, have you ever heard of an angle grinder attack of a bike in Portugal? I have not. I’ve had friends with their bike stolen, but they weren’t using a big heavy duty ulock or big chain or something that I can only be cut by angle grinders.
danielv123@reddit
Norway here, have seen whole bike racks gone.
Lar1ssaa@reddit
Portugal is too poor for these antics though, even a seasoned criminal can’t afford an angle grinder
lfarrell12@reddit
Not sure who does Portugal but Qcover and Bikmo are the main insurers in Ireland.
perdigaoperdeuapena@reddit
Hey, tell me if you get some interesting one! My bank (Montepio) has told me about one from Lusitania, I think it has connections with AXA, isn't it?
I found it a little bit expensive for an ebike but it got me thinking because it covered a lot of things, even transportation in the case of running out of battery or accident
InvestigatorSenior@reddit
I have dedicated plan on AXA but I'm not in Portugal and with those things changing all the time I'd look up good insurance broker and select best offer trough them. This is what I did for mine.
RiotSloth@reddit
3-6 months? Blimey, you’re not in the UK clearly! Over here they give you a crime number over the phone when you first contact them, and it’s highly unlikely you will get any further action from the police. They have basically given up on theft and burglary years ago. Some police authorities have a 0% clear up rate now for theft and burglary.
lfarrell12@reddit
Same goes for Ireland, though they have had a campaign to trace bikes being stolen here then sent abroad - these they do catch up with. But the kid with an angle grinder in the north inner city - you're unlikely to ever hear back.

Empty_Lawfulness9158@reddit
My renter’s insurance also covers ebikes automatically, with no deductible. When I was signing up for it, I was given the option to either have a deductible or pay a slightly higher amount each month. Totally worth the investment, even just for the peace of mind
Queasy_Enthusiasm_61@reddit
Who’s renter’s insurance do you have?
Empty_Lawfulness9158@reddit
I currently use one called Lemonade, and they have been fantastic so far.
You’re able to customize different categories to fit your needs, for example I have $50,000 of personal property insurance (covers things like jewelry, art, bikes, instruments, furniture), an extra $5,000 for portable electronics (laptops, tablets, phones, Nintendo Switch/Steam Deck), $100,000 in personal liability (covers you if someone is injured on your property and decides to sue. Landlord would most likely be the one actually responsible, but I decided to get the extra coverage just in case), $15,000 in loss of use insurance (covers you in case of flood, fire, or other things that would make your home uninhabitable. Again landlord is most likely responsible, depending on the situation, but great to have a little extra peace of mind). For all of that, I pay about $22 per month, and then I opted to pay another $1.67/month so that my fiancée and all of her belongings are covered under the same plan, so just under $24 per month in total.
You can also add things like insurance for tenant pet damages, pet health insurance, etc.
They made it super easy to customize, and while I probably have much higher coverage than I actually need, the peace of mind for less than 25 bucks a month is totally worth it for me.
I’ve only had to file one claim so far, my neighbor destroyed some of my fiancée’s decorations that had been in a shared storage space on the property. Lemonade was super easy to work with, and we were fully reimbursed quickly for the damages, without raising the monthly cost.
I have used other renter’s insurance companies in the past, such as Jerry (another online company similar to Lemonade) and Millennial Specialty Insurance (horrible but the property I lived in at the time required that specific insurance) and the pricing was comparable. I believe Liberty Mutual and other large insurance companies used to have renter’s insurance options too, not sure if that’s still the case.
Also, I’m not sure if this applies to all renter’s insurance policies, but Lemonade’s insurance will also still cover your ebike & other belongings even if they are not at your place of residence when they are damaged/stolen, so all in all I’d highly recommend them based on my experience so far

Melodic-Matter4685@reddit
U mean gap insurance, right? U pay deductible and u get replacement cost at time of purchase, not depreciated value.
Daaaaaaaaaaanaaaaang@reddit
Gap insurance is about depreciated value v owed debt, doesn't apply here
Melodic-Matter4685@reddit
It is, but sundays was calling “old to new” gap. Dunno why.
Tricky_Condition_279@reddit
Yes. It’s not called gap. They pay the purchase price minus the deductible.
Melodic-Matter4685@reddit
USA here. Not here. They pay replacement cost. So great if new. 3 years from now? Not so great since comps will likely be half original purchase price.
Sundays now calls their “gap” “new for old”. They payout for the original purchase with no depreciation applied.

Was I supposed to have a picture of it every time I left it??

Airtags work by connecting to devices that are nearby, and using their location to broadcast by piggybacking off their signal
Most likely, the airtag connected to someone who was on WiFi across the street and that was the last time it pinged a location. They are helpful to track things to a degree but trying to do live tracking isnt incredibly reliable.

To help with anxiety, Lock it up and watch it for a while from across the street or down the block. Judge how much attention it gets. I own an EUC for partly for this reason. Depending on how you use your bike and what for, adopting a «MECHANICALLY pristine bike» mentality might help.
My commuter ebike that I use both winter and summer season looks like absolute garbage after about 3K+ miles over three years. Mechanically it’s like new, but it won’t get stolen because I usually park it next to bikes that look like yours just in case :)

lmao thats a good tactic, but I cant afford an extra bike sadly, I'll just have to be careful, might sticker it up a bit to bring down the value, its already registered everywhere I can register it, gps, 4 locks, alarm, you need my phone for the motor to start and I always bring out the battery when I leave it anyways,
Maximum-Scientist462@reddit
Its probably more than enough :) I meant to say that a good tactic might be to just not clean it/sticker it up/spray paint it, but take care of it otherwise. So it rides well but looks less appealing to a thief.
ihateposers@reddit
Why don’t e-bikes come with a key?
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
tbh they should be locked like motorcycles, you cant roll it at all without an ignition key. Mine wont kick in the motor if my phone isnt nearby, but you can still move it which sucks
Ordinary_Setting_192@reddit
It’s called separation anxiety
ancientstephanie@reddit
Airtags aren't GPS. The location you get reported is the location of one of the iPhones that pinged the tag. Which depending on conditions, could be as much as 100m away, (or sometimes more under perfect conditions). The report rate is also too low to detect movement - it can be as much as 10-15 minutes delayed even when plenty of iphones are around, since it tries to save power. Police officers that are aware of the Airtag's limitations will not help you based on the location reported alone, as it's not technically enough to secure a warrant on its own without other evidence that the stolen item is present.
Since this is a Bosch bike, rather than relying on an Airtag, strongly consider getting their Connect module tracker and associated app. It has 4G and its own GPS so it doesn't rely on someone else's iPhone, it alerts you immediately if someone's messing with your bike, it's integrated into the motor and controller in such a way that unauthorized removal while locked more or less bricks the bike, it lets you track or disable the bike from your phone, in real time. and as long as its reporting a location, you know it's still hard wired into the motor, so the police actually can do something based on that.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
mine doesnt come w the module and getting it installed is prob expensive, but I do think its my best option, gonna check it out
ancientstephanie@reddit
It's around $120-150 for the module, and probably whatever the shop charges for 30-60 minutes of labor. So probably around $200-$250, basically the price of a good lock. Having it and using the digital key feature to lock the electronics removes a lot of the value for a thief, since they won't be able to get it running again without going to a Bosch dealer and having that dealer send proof of ownership back to Bosch to have them release the lockout from their end.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
thats actually amazing, ill be saving up for that
ChillinDylan901@reddit
The saddle height though?!?

NCC74656@reddit
i never leave mine out of sight. you can lock it, take the battery, put a shirloc gps tracker somewhere in its tubes. register the serial with local PD. these bikes get stolen quite often and people will cut the poles they are locked to....
DresNightfire@reddit
Same my anxiety would ruin my shopping experience so I would instead walk it inside with me while shopping. If security says otherwise then so be it, but atleast we have peace of mind.
aegroti@reddit
I always would take the battery with me, If your bike won't start without the battery then it can be difficult to move and the battery is the most valuable part as it's easily sellable compared to the rest of the bike.
lfarrell12@reddit
These are terrible locks. Get yourself one decent boronium lock with the Litelock X3 or new Kyrptonite Diamond. What you've got on it can be cut through in seconds and they won't care about alarms.
surfyogi777@reddit
Take the battery with you in a shopping bag or back pack. Set your D lock, and have a good time, forget about the bike.
Ok-Jellyfish1961@reddit
Buy an angle grinder proof lock like the Onguard Rock solid or the LiteLock x3.
I live in NYC with a Yamaha Ebike with the LiteLock X3 and I lock it up everywhere in the city. No one messes with my bike.
Technical_Pie667@reddit
I never leave my ebike locked up outside anywhere. I always walk it inside with me i really dont care. And if they have a problem then tell.the security your leaving it with them and dont take no for an answer (they won't say no if you dont have any locks on you). I wouldn't leave that bike locked up anywhere outside. It looks nice and if I was a junky I can see myself definitely wanting this bike. Also airtags are easy for someone who is an experienced thief and know that there are apps that can detect them to easily remove.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
im probably going to insure it anyways, but yeah I decided im not leaving it locked up anywhere except my buildings garage (it wont fit in my one room apartment) and while down there, I parked it in front of a camera, 4 locks, airtag and my horn alarm active.
Im lucky in Madrid there's hundreds of restaurants, cafes and bars that have sitting outside right on the sidewalk to eat or drink, also tons of parks, stuff like that where I can just sit outside next to my bike never leaving it unattended, which is what im going to be doing and have done a few times already.
My only issue is groceries, I need the bike to haul groceries but I cant keep an eye on it while buying, gotta figure that one out
LadderNo6948@reddit
When you buy an AirTag or some other gps tracker it is important to disguise it. They sell AirTag disguisers.
You place the tracker inside the disguise container and place it where you want.
Otherwise, if you place an AirTag on something, the first thing the thief will do is remove and destroy it.
Some of them look like a knob that’s supposed to be there.
Do a search on Amazon.
JMarkyBB@reddit
Like this, Airtag Bike Reflector, I’ve just bought one, you can get them disguised as “Bells”& “Water Bottle Holders”. Great piece of mind knowing wherever the thief looks, they will never find it.
LadderNo6948@reddit
Now that’s a great idea!

Jealous-Kiwi-1161@reddit
To make you more paranoid, it's very easy to steal the battery and new one costs around 1500€. Solution for it is getting an insurance, often bound to your other insurance of the place where you live in (idk the English name)
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
I take the battery out 100% of the time I leave it
LegenWait4ItDary_@reddit
Get yourself a proper lock. what you have now can be cut in a second. Get an ABUS or another reputable company.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
kryptonite isnt reputable?
ArlngtonAF@reddit
All locks can be cut, and frfr there’s not a locked bike that can’t be stolen.. the trick is to make it as difficult as possible and take the thief so much extra time, they don’t even try.. frame lock ✅ wheel lock ✅ and even a cable (thou easier to cut , someone would need multiple tools, bolt cutters and a battery powered sawzaw.. to get thru both of those) Just got a new bike too and I feel ya about the paranoia haha.. for me, I added a Samsung AirTag along with an apple one , prolly is over kill🤷♂️ But I use a krypotnite folding lock around the frame, a motorcycle alarm brake lock, and if I’m leaving it for longer add lock the rear tire with a ulock.. it could be stolen, but it be a bitch, and I’ll prolly catch you haha
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
honestly yeah, I've registered it everywhere I can, cafe lock for the back wheel, ulock on the frame with a cable running through the front wheel, and chain lock through the back wheel and frame, horn alarm active and an airtag hidden under the saddle, chained to a good bike rack on a my apartaments private garage, and only that way I feel decently safe
LegenWait4ItDary_@reddit
It is. I did not know it was Kryptonite. It looks pretty thin, though. I would buy something bigger. You have a beautiful bike so if I were you I would buy something a bit more massive.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)

Flying_Bob_270@reddit
In addition you could get a bike alarm from Amazon, they don't cost much & work great but you can't use a shared bike rack because the are sensitive. I would try to park it somewhere where thieves think you may be watching it. A GPS won't stop theft. Might even get you killed as you try to retrieve your bike
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
i do have an alarm, other people trying to squeeze by tripped it a few times lol, thats the only bad thing w it

I just got my first ebike and I feel you so much. I have a decent folding lock, U-lock, steel cable, and motion alarm, and fortunately I live in a relatively quiet, low-crime suburb so that setup should be plenty for most stops, but I'm still super paranoid it will get taken. I've been avoiding leaving it anywhere, but I had to lock it up for the first time a few days ago and I was so nervous the whole time, lol. It's "only" a $1200 Aventon, so not that high-end, but still. For me, that's a small fortune.
I'm still planning to get an Airtag or some other tracker (I already have a bell that has a spot inside to hide one) and a frame lock, but I expect what's going to ease my mind the most is just time and also getting some good wear and tear on the bike so it doesn't look all shiny and new. I'm liking the suggestions about stickers, too, although I really don't feel right about sticking anything semi-permanent to it just yet and messing it up ... Even though that's exactly the point 😅 But if I can find a nice bumper sticker or something that's not TOO much of an eyesore, I'll give it a go
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)

Sucks in the western world. Bike thieves everywhere. No one steals bikes in Asia.
ausdoug@reddit
Asia is a big place, you sure about that? Granted it was a motorbike, but when I lived in HCMC had to pay a guy to watch it when parking or the front of any cafe, often locked up in bulk when on front of a restaurant. Had to do the same in Cambodia. Korea was different though, I could leave an iPhone and a wallet full of cash to reserve an outside table and not worry about it.
LimLovesDonuts@reddit
It's pretty rare in Singapore.
I had accidentally left mine unlocked and not connected to anything outside of a mall and came back hours later and that thing is still there! Not that it's a good behavior, just that it happens.
Chiryou@reddit

Aware-Pressure748@reddit
I saw someone leave a ebike out from of a store not on a rack but they did leave one of those big long cable wire locks going through both wheels and the frame, I was like damn do that and hook it to a Rail and use a Ulock with that setup to

Damn I love living in a safe small city. Ebikes everywhere sometimes unchained.

Kryptonite, get a level 10 grade Lock and they will give you a theft insurance for a year you can renew. This is sorta what your looking for.

raka_defocus@reddit
I double lock, chain on the frame, disc lock on the rear tire. Most bikes are heavy and if it doesn't roll it's less likely to go away.

that was my idea too, chain the frame, lock both wheels, airtag underneath the saddle, i also use the Bosch app to lock the motor if it doesnt detect my phone nearby
Vedicstudent108@reddit
Believe it or not , those cafe locks are some of the hardest to cut , due to the frame of the bike covering it!

Often theifs are too broke to buy a new battery and it is harderer to sell a ebike without a battery.
You could also buy a sticker from aliexpress/temu (GPS tracking).
godsburden@reddit
Or just buy a gps tracker and install it somewhere on the bike
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)

Verthandin@reddit
I got a GPS tracker called "BikeFinder". It is from Norway and you install it in the handle. It has an integrated SIM card so you can track it anywhere. It also shows what Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices are nearby, making it easier to pinpoint. I really like it, but it does require a subscription to work.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)

NerdlinGeeksly@reddit

Khmerog1@reddit
It's harder to steal a car than a bike...
NerdlinGeeksly@reddit
Not really, either smash a window and hotwire it if it's old or hold the person at weapon point and take their keys.
Khmerog1@reddit
That sounds much harder than just cutting the lock and pedalling away..
NerdlinGeeksly@reddit
I know my electric bike requires a key to start, so you can't just pedal away on all electric bikes. And no it's not that much harder.
Few-Presentation2488@reddit
Druggie thieves don't care. They will trade it for drugs. Not think of battery. Insurance from velo / Markel will insure for bike and accessories added.
Deep_Mood_7668@reddit
A GPS tracking sticker? How's that supposed to work
Dramatic_Bluebird595@reddit
It's like locks, it keeps honest people honest and might convince the amateur crooks to look for an easier target...
Deep_Mood_7668@reddit
Yeah someone explained it to me already. I was thinking they were talking about a sticker with actual GPS capabilities
KingRamaXI@reddit
I checked Ali express and it’s literally a sticker that warns of GPS tracking. Not sure if it’s better or worse than not letting thieves know
Deep_Mood_7668@reddit
Ooh that's what they meant lol
I mean they prolly don't care. They're stealing it in a crowded place in broad daylight
anewfriend4u@reddit
I just use a D lock big enough that locks in the battery to a post (that sets the tone for the other locks) because carrying around the battery is not enjoyable.
Wild59Bill@reddit
Just get a battery bag & it makes carrying it around easy. Power grinders only take a minute to cut through any lock. But despite that I also have an ABUS rear wheel lock & a heavy duty integrated chain lock. I have an WDSCAM motion alarm, horn, rear turn signals, brake light and an assortment of flashing lights to choose from. A have a Knog Scout alarm with a find me app for an iPhone & if you’re within 30 m,(up to 100 m if your outside with no obstacles between you and your bike), it will sent you a message that your alarm has been set off to your iPhone via bluetooth. I’ve also hidden an AirTag in the open space in my front fork. I got the idea to have 2 AirTags from another link here on Redit. He said put one on an obvious location, - So they destroy that one (My Knog Scout which is mounted on my rear rack) & they most likely will not look for the 2nd AirTag.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)

Just an hour locked up on a light post, when I came back for my bike all that was left is the heavy duty padlock on a puddle of water.

No-Negotiation-6929@reddit
While I have heard stories of thieves breaking out the grinder in very crowded places to steal bikes (sometimes throwing on a hi vis vest and acting like they’re supposed to be doing what they are doing), I think this might be limited to NYC where culturally no one is paying attention to what anyone else is doing—this isn’t happening at a suburban mall with private security and cameras everywhere.
In two decades of locking bikes in Chicago, biking everywhere, being a bike mechanic, and having everyone I know rely primarily on bikes for transportation, I have never had a bicycle stolen and have actually never heard a story of a properly locked bicycle being stolen aside from overnight or late night lockups in industrial areas.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
you sound like you have greay expertise in all pf this and im just starting now, any good tips on locking my bike I should know? thank you!
No-Negotiation-6929@reddit
1) Use a high quality hardened lock to secure the frame to a solid locking object (not a tree, sign, or bit of fence). If locking for longer periods or in shady districts, using one of the grinder resistant locks is a good idea (hiplok/litelok). In most situations, any lock that requires a grinder to remove (can’t be stolen with hand tools) is honestly sufficient. Things that can be quickly stolen with hand tools are a crime of opportunity for crackheads under all circumstances. 2) Secure any valuable components. This usually means putting a cable through each wheel and locking the saddle (particularly if you have a QR seatpost). On an e-bike, the battery should be locked or removed. 3) Avoid overnight lockups or lockups in shady or isolated districts to the greatest extent possible.
That’s really it. If you do everything right, you have nothing much to worry about.
textandstage@reddit
If you can’t afford to replace it, you can’t really afford it to begin with.
Just get some insurance if you’re gonna be this paranoid.
One lock, through the wheels and the frame, is plenty.
nopropulsion@reddit
I hate that expression. Yes I can afford to replace my ebike, but for me it is a luxury item that helps me bike more instead of drive.
If my ebike got stolen, I'd have to consider whether or not it was worth replacing. I don't NEED it and I could definitely afford it but that expression is far from true/helpful.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
I dont even own a car, its my main mode of transportation, I either bike or walk
reverendunclebastard@reddit
I haven't driven or had a license in 30 years.
I live in town with lots of sketch, so I take a multipronged approach. Foldable e-scooter for groceries, malls, doctor's appointments, or other extended indoor activities. Regular bike and a good lock for journeys with lots of brief indoor stops. My first (foldable) ebike arrives soon, and I plan to mostly use it for extended touring or destinations where I can fold it and bring it indoors with me.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
im thinking about a cheap scooter too, you mostly fold it and bring it indoors with you wherever you go I'm guessing, ever had issues with that?
reverendunclebastard@reddit
Never had an issue with carrying the folded version inside. It's about 20lbs, so it's not much burden to carry. If there's a lot of walking inside (i.e. groceries), I might put it in a shopping cart to save my arms.
Mostly it's great for popping in to places for quick shopping.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
I think this might be a great option, how do you haul groceries though? lol
reverendunclebastard@reddit
For small to medium loads, I use a backpack. For larger shops, I'll use my regular bike with a bike trailer and good locks.

Sillyci@reddit
There are angle grinder resistant U-locks, such as the Litelok X3 and Hiplok D1000. They’re expensive but well worth the peace of mind.
Most thieves are not going to sit there for 15-20 minutes and change out multiple discs to cut the lock. It exposes them to unnecessary risk when they can easily cut through a weaker lock in 1 minute.
In perfectly ideal conditions with a mains powered angle grinder, a vise, and high quality discs, you can cut through even the X3 in 5 minutes. However in practical applications, thieves will be using battery powered grinders, cheap discs, and will be fumbling trying to change discs. Most won’t even have another disc or try to change it while committing a crime in broad daylight.
Few-Presentation2488@reddit
People are unlikely to get involved even if they see a dirtbag with 4 foot bolt cutters. Just lock it and have insurance. I have a video of a known criminal taking a bike, yet police do nothing. Must have insurance it's the only way to enjoy your bike while knowing it can be stolen at any time.
Few-Presentation2488@reddit
Velo insurance. Inexpensive. I became obsessed about theft after my $2500 was stolen. With no insurance.
It's hard to relax even with insurance. But I'm gonna try chill. If they target the bike you can't stop them.
NerdlinGeeksly@reddit
I suggest getting a steel locking mechanism and mounting it to the frame of your body where you can, Also installing GPS tracker on it, some bike shops have these rectangular ones that will screw onto the body of your bike and you can put the holder for the steel locking mechanism over it so it looks like part of the bike.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
steel locking mechanism?
NerdlinGeeksly@reddit
A bike lock that's made of steel plates with interlocking rings so they fold next to each other.

Hiplock dx1000.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)

Worldly-News3438@reddit
It is, but it's worth it!
Prestigious-Mine-513@reddit
Leaving the battery in it was your biggest mistake. Around my area "we live in a farmland, but also a student town linked with trains to the capital city every 15-30min." Yea, this place you cannot leave a bicycle anywhere especially if it's an expensive one.
Got vans driving around picking them up and sending them out of the country.
jean_cule69@reddit
You have a ebike, I think you should pick a heavier lock, a true chain, it's not like it's gonna make the ride harder. Also, yeah, donc lock it to those racks. See that tree behind? Lock the chain in the frame and the wheel onto it, et voilà, you good
wlexxx2@reddit
park in a deck, under stairs, a middle floor!
Ok_Shoulder8124@reddit
Why is that saddle so much down there in the Pic, did you buy the wrong size?
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
nope, its a size small, im just short.
Ok_Shoulder8124@reddit
Sry dont wanna blame
CurrentSeries2737@reddit
Just get insurance. You can't live with your bike like that! TBH it sounds like you're already going overkill with the locks anyway. All you need is good insurance and an anti angle grinder d lock with a cable extender.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
will do!!
PresentationEmpty1@reddit
I have an expensive e-bike too. Your paranoia is sucking all the joy out of the experience. Buy one diamond-rated lock, a gps sticker as deterrence and some insurance and enjoy yourself.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
yeah I think I'll do that tbh, I will honestly still jist ride it to where I know I can keep an eye on it, public transport here is amazing and I can get by, the only time I'll be risking it is grocery shopping, which is usually a high foot traffic place
Equivalent-Account58@reddit
Yeah know how you feel
Antique_Detail2151@reddit
I honestly can’t disagree with your paranoia. I’m terrified to leave my truck unattended unless I’m parked right by a camera because someone might break the window and steal all my tools (my livelihood).
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
its such a fucked up feeling, but sometimes its better to be safe than sorry
dafffy3@reddit
Would recommend hunting for a better bike rack that is a sad excuse for a bike rack. You want one that is concreted in and looks hard to cut through than your locks.
stulifer@reddit
Take the battery with you, always. I learned my lesson the hard way even though my e-bike was cheaper than the neighbour’s bike next to it. We had the same U-lock. I was only gone 20 min.
No-Conversation-8287@reddit
Buy a good certified cable lock. And dont mount it to such a thin bike rack. Which is easy to cut.
ggezboye@reddit
Apart from trusted locks I learned that making your ebike look like shit is the best way to make it less desirable. I have dirty panniers, I just clean the drivetrain and the spots that contacts my body and it works. Though the fact that it's also a converted ebike also helps since it doesn't look as neat as premade ebikes. I also live in Asia, there's still trust in our society though you could still lose an ebike if you keep it unlocked outside overnight.
Also don't park in an empty rack. Park in a crowded rack as much as possible. You're hiding your ebike by placing it near bicycles that have poor locks. They will steal the easily broken locks first.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
great advice, thank you!
No-Conversation-8287@reddit
Lol buy a good lock like the ABUS Iven Chain 8210
Also required for the insurance.

No-Investigator-8515@reddit
The wheel lock is a good deterrent. I would consider investing in a solid angle grinder resistant lock like The LITELOK X. Those krypronite orange locks you have aren’t great vs an angle grinder. The yellow ones are better but not perfect. But that bike rack is probably the weakest link in the whole situation. Cool bike though.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
thank you! i think i might end up splurging on one in the near future
AVBofficionado@reddit

JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)

digitalboom@reddit
Add some rotor alarms just don’t forget to take them off before riding. The blaring of two 120db alarms draws a whole lot of attention.
DivasDayOff@reddit
I have some heavy duty chains for mine, but also a disk brake lock with an alarm. Move the bike at all and it chirps a warning. Move it again and the alarm goes off properly. I also bought a WiFi camera that I was going to wire into the battery via a suitable voltage regulator, though never got around to fitting it.
The former obviously only notifies me if I'm within hearing range, though it might also serve to scare away a casual thief or anyone tampering. The latter would only work within WiFi range. But if you've chained it up outside a shop or cafe where you're close but don't have line of sight, they definitely add peace of mind.
Whether I'd be brave or foolish enough to confront someone wearing a face mask and holding an angle grinder is another matter. So I have it insured too.
Tight_Revolution_924@reddit
Forgot that there is a motor on the bike too until someone mentioned it in the comments section 😳
Anxious-Depth-7983@reddit

Anxious-Depth-7983@reddit
I'd also put the Ulock through the rear tire and the triangle if it fits. Otherwise, look into the Foldylocks.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
foldylocks are better than chain locks?
Anxious-Depth-7983@reddit
Harder to grind and harder to cut with a bolt cutter and has some kind of guarantee.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
will definitely get one as soon as im able to afford it lol, had no idea they were better
So5aBe4ts@reddit
I suggest just get another d lock/u_lock, look on YouTube for Angle Grinder resistant locks. Yes they are expensive but they are investment to secure your bike. The ongaurd u lock comes at a price of 245 dollars and there's a lite lock x1 for 149, there x3 lite lock is one of the best ones out there for 300 dollars. And of course insurance, a gps tracker from what I heard Air tag is not sufficient. Most GPS trackers are subscription though due to my research. Approximately 19 dollars a month. Another thing. Get an alarm. There's one on amazon for 26 dollars, from the reviews, it's very loud. You want your bike to look like and feel like hard work to steal.
neilap123@reddit
This guy knows. If you’re looking to invest in some proper security, forget Kryptonite and get a proper angle grinder resistant lock. Makes stealing your buy way more trouble than it’s worth for any thief.

Put the gear to the lowest or highest settings.
Add a motion alarm.
I saw someone with quick-release pedals and seat then brought it with them.
RabiAbonour@reddit
Insurance, absolutely. The bike does you little good if you're too scared to use it.
chessset5@reddit
Yeah the air tag can be a bit unreliable. It gets the position of the nearest pingable ios device and uses it as it’s position. When left out at university I once had my bike ping that it was 2 blocks away from where it actually was cause I could see it from my class. Scared the shit out of me. I guess someone 2 blocks away had their iphone out and was the only apple device in range for my airtag to ping.
So it isn’t inherently the most accurate device. I would say it is accurate to a few hundred meters.
JayBigGuy10@reddit
Airtag locations are the location of the iPhone that picked up the bluetooth ping, not the tag itself
fly-on-a-wall120@reddit

tuggywuggsy@reddit
left it unchained in a Walmart next to a security guard who said he could watch, came back to it missing and the dude shrugged. Wouldn't even let me see the security footage. My piece of advice is that you should always use a lock, and you can only trust yourself and yourself only when it comes to your property (especially expensive property like E-bikes).
AfraidofReplies@reddit
If the bike racks suck lock up to something else. I feel no guilt about locking to something more secure. It's not my fault the owners provided a scrap rack. Just don't lock to the tops of railings or other things people with mobility problems might need to use.
obscuredreference@reddit
There’s always my dual method: a diamond grade lock and trash your own bike so no one wants to steal it. lol
I personally like the 200 stickers I have on it that are impossible to remove without the paint coming off too. (That last bit wasn’t intentional, and I’m not crazy about this side effect.)
But they certainly reduce the potential resale value of the bike. lol
Droid3T@reddit
If you have any type of home owners insurance they might cover it being stolen.. this is what I heard.
I've been riding ebikes and escooter for like 6 years now or when ever they became popular. I would leave my scooter out side the gym locked up in a ghetto part of town and did that for a year and never had a issue.
I did have some women one time stand on it literally right when I walked away.
I've had 1-2k ebikes have locked them up every where and never had a issue.
I think the main thing you should think about is if the bike is stolen do you really care that much? Can you afford to replace it? Maybe let one get stolen and then care more. Enjoy the freedom of having a ebike. Worry about it getting stolen when it actually happens is my way of thought.
Revolutionary_Fly769@reddit
I’d keep it in sight.
Gildor_Helyanwe@reddit

Randall_Lind@reddit
You could always remove the battery and carry it. Batteries are normally hard to get. I got an Actbest bike and it died, so I ended up getting another. Even though it was the same model, etc., the battery on the new bike was smaller than the old bike, and I got it about 8 months after the old one.

might be worth it to spend 300$ on a lock that makes you feel comfy
jericho@reddit
If they’re already using four locks and an AirTag, I don’t think another lock is what they need.
Gatorpatch@reddit
They at least need to start locking to street signs/other options rather than these types of racks. Something you can't lock the frame to === something you don't lock your bike too
With 4 locks you should be able to find a safe spot to park around anywhere, even if the choices are slim. I wouldn't consider the rack above as "safe" and understand the paranoia.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
yeah I hate those racks, I'm looking for a post next time
Gatorpatch@reddit
The paranoia is super valid tho, especially since that bike looks flashy and clearly an e-bike. I've basically sticker-bombed my bike to avoid it looking like an e-bike.
I got all my housemates bikes in college (just helped them choose good bikes of Facebook marketplace since I've been riding for a while) and they all slowly got stolen after they started riding, which is when I started making sure people I set up to ride knew to use ulocks, cables through both wheels, lock next to other bikes if possible, always through the frame, and another lock never hurts.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
sad to hear how common bike theft is, I'm sticker bombing it asap, I know that helps a bunch, and maybe not leaving it alone for a long period of time (except locked on my buildings garage) and I think it should be mostly safe, maybe even get a locking cover too
Gatorpatch@reddit
Tbf most of my housemates used cable locks, which I warned them about.
Following my rules and using 2-3 locks+ sticker bombing has worked for me so far, knock on wood of course.
ComfortableSugar1926@reddit
True, just saying I personally would feel a lot better with a 300$ lock than 4 20-40$ locks

OP go on google and search for bike trackers.. Anyone can cut these locks. Even an AirTag which costs like $20 in the meantime. I know that talking about your business is not allowed here. Can’t blame you. Even with my rusting bike Im using till I get an E-Bike, I get paranoid thats it’s gonna get stolen.
Though thats when I go up to a restaurant to go pick up some food and theres no good spot to lock up the bike so I just leave it sitting near the door. If I can actually lock it up then I don’t worry because even though my city does have a problem with bike theft, I know someone isn’t down bad enough to get caught trying to break open a lock to go steal a rusting bike in daylight hours.
truthwatchr@reddit
Putting it in a high visibility area is just as important too. With all those locks it wouldn’t be very appealing to steal during daylight. Don’t try to hide it behind a building or fence.
If that shopping area has an indoor high visibility area to lock it up, would. I’ve even brought my bike inside a store. You get looks but the bike won’t be stolen.

I'm paranoid as hell too. I don't leave my E-Bike locked up ANYWHERE. I don't trust it even if I have 7 locks, some of these thieves WILL find a way to get it.
The only place I'm okay with leaving it is at work, but we have cameras inside and since it's a warehouse it's not accessible to the outside world.
If I ain't riding my ebike or next to me, it's at home. I have a Hyper Beach cruiser that's $100. I'm more comfortable leaving my beach cruiser locked up outside than my E-Bike.
Being paranoid is a good thing, trust your instincts. Also carry a pepper spray (and/or) knife as well. I've seen people try to snatch bikes while people are riding them.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
definitely adding pepper spray to my list lol, thank you for understanding, I think thats the key here, its either locked up tight in my garage, under me or next to me, no ifs or buts. Gargantuanbone@reddit

Troubleindc2@reddit
Absolutely—keeping things in perspective is key! An e-bike is a fantastic tool, but like any tool, it shines in certain scenarios and isn’t always the best fit for others. If the destination is a social hangout where securing your bike is tricky, considering alternatives like Uber, Lime, or even a onewheel or electric skateboard you can carry around might be the smarter move. And when social events involve alcohol, a rideshare is the safest bet.
For pure recreational riding, choosing routes that allow you to keep an eye on your bike is crucial. Exploring new areas with this in mind can lead to unexpected gems—like great food spots! It’s a smart way to ensure you’re enjoying your ride while keeping your bike secure.
It may sounds like a lot of thought to put into this approach but it will help you discover some great places along the way. Malls are near or at the bottom of my list.
JJsNotOkay@reddit (OP)
agreed, I'm not going to the mall with my bike again, unless I can walk it in with me or I find a good secure structure to lock it to

You can't use it like this. Get an insurance, two locks is maximum. The main point is that it is locked onto something solid thru the frame. The rest is up to the gods, if someone wants it, 5 locks is not going to stop them. They only need to take the one that is locking it to a structure and then can carry it away.
But this is not a sustainable way to do it.
