Is it mandatory for a country to have a successful economical car brand in the U.S. before they can have a successful premieum or luxury car company in the U.S.?

I know there’s been car brands that are foreign to the U.S. that entered the U.S. market and became household name brands in the U.S. overtime but I can’t think of one that wasn’t already a household name in its own homeland before it came to the U.S. and became a household brand overtime.

No... but exactly what you are asking is a bit unclear.
BMW and Mercedes exist only as luxury brands in the US but have cheaper options available in Europe, especially Mercedes.
There are many brands that are exclusively luxury/performance brands, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls, Ferrari, etc.

Wouldn’t Mercedes and BMW just all around be considered a premieum brand since they don’t sell economy cars aka just a-b to cars but sell premieum and luxury cars instesd
skepticaljesus@reddit
They do sell economy a-b cars in EU
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit (OP)
I said their premieum. If you disagree that’s one thing though

Respectfully....are you like, ten years old..?

Nah I’m 6

1) They do sell A-B cars....in Europe
2) Even in the US, Mercedes has non-premium models

I thought the Metris was expensive but that’s around the same price as a Pacifica.
DudeWhereIsMyDuduk@reddit
No. Lotus never did.
unatleticodemadrid@reddit
No. There are several manufacturers who are luxury only - McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Rolls Royce etc.
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit (OP)
To be fair McLaren was already a household name mostly because of their time in F1 in the U.S. before they sold road cars in the U.S.
DudeWhereIsMyDuduk@reddit
Nothing about F1 is a "household name" in the US, and that's been true since the USGP was held at Watkins Glen...
unatleticodemadrid@reddit
Fair. The question in your title is different from the one in the body of your post.
As for the title question - see above comment. Plenty of household name premium/luxury manufacturers who do not have economical offerings.
Whether there has been a foreign manufacturer that wasn’t a household name in their native country before hitting it big in the US - maybe, but none come to mind.

Yeah I could’ve verbalized what I said notably better. It was a matter of trying to keep to short and sweet while easy digestible

Alpine is coming America, but its economical brand Renault isn't coming back America.
Not all automakers need that way like Asian automakers. If the brand success in other way, they could become household brand too. Alpine becomes a household brand by their race car prestige, F1 makes it popular. F1 is becoming hot topic car race in America in recent, so this brand does have advantage coming America.
AdrenalineRush1996@reddit
Not really, no.
frogman1171@reddit
If a manufacturer is not successful in its own country, it will likely not have the capital to expand into the US market
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit (OP)
So your answer is if a car company that’s homeland isn’t in the U.S. is a household brand amongst its own citizens that it can come to the U.S. and have a premieum or luxury car company of theirs overtime become a household name amongst U.S. citizens?

Yes

Tesla was a luxury brand(yeah I know they still weren’t as refined as traditional brands) before making economy models.
shellmiro@reddit
Nope. Tesla is a prime example. They started with the luxury-priced Model S and X and later started doing mass production vehicles with the 3 and Y.
This strategy worked pretty brilliantly for them with the S and X gathering a ton of hype and media attention and succeeded in making Tesla seem like the futuristic, cool and popular brand. They later successfully pivoted that hype towards the popular mass market 3 and Y.
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit (OP)
Tesla isn’t foreign though
shellmiro@reddit
Ahh I didn't read the question fully lol. Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Porsche and almost every other exotic would fit the bill.
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit (OP)
They would but at the same time they had to become household names as premieum brands first which is harder to do then it is to as a economy brand.
Yotsubato@reddit
No.
See Mercedes Benz, Porsche.
